[ laughter ] >> i'm heading to capitola! >> it's crazy because some beaches will be warmer today than our inland locations because of the direct results of an offshore flow but it's going to be pristine where that visibility is unlimited. the sky is really blue in comparison to where you just returned from anne. >> yes. trip to wisconsin. it was fareezing! anybody saying it's chilly out now? you have no idea! >> you were saying the sky was very gray there. >> yeah. >> yours is very dark right now but when the sun makes an appearance the visibility unlimited. temperatures again this morning

well below freezing in santa rosa. 37 degrees in redwood city. also in san jose. it's 35 now in throughout the tri-valley. and around the lip of the bay, san francisco and oakland both in the 40s. here's the deal. this morning, the winds are relatively slight. 7 in half moon bay, 4 in san francisco. calm inland. these winds will be out of the east-northeast an offshore flow this afternoon up to 15 miles per hour. that dries out the atmosphere. skin feels a little dry, get a little static cling to your clothes and hair. that's an offshore flow. this is the satellite and radar. what do you see. >> nothing? >> not a cloud in the sky until friday when we have big changes in the forecast for the rest of the year. today's number from 58 in pacifica to 60 in oakland, 63 mountain view. yes, mid-60s across the santa clara valley. 62 santa rosa. we'll talk about 70 degrees where you can expect that today. but first, 18 after the hour, we'll have the full forecast,

but here's roqui. >> thank you, roberta. okay. it's 5:01. let's check your "holiday light" roads throughout the bay area. starting with the bay bridge toll plaza, looking good into san francisco from 80 westbound from the carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze that's just an 18-minute drive. those metering lights may not even turn on this morning so we'll definitely keep an eye on that. moving over to roadwork in oakland first eastbound 580 to 980 that reduced to one lane until 6:30. then westbound 24 connector to eastbound 580 has the right lane closed until 6 a.m. but not causing many delays in the area. moving over to the nimitz freeway looking good in both directions from 880 northbound on 238 in san leandro to the maze, that will take you 16 minutes and if you are taking the southbound side of 880 to the san mateo bridge, here's a live look at that commute into foster city from hayward. 880 to 101, 13 minutes. new this morning, a woman is dead after a shooting in west oakland. now police still looking for the gunman. the woman was shot at around quarter to 6:00 last night near

market street and west grand avenue. she died at the scene. police have not released her name or any information on a possible suspect. and emeryville police are investigating a shooting outside an emeryville hotel. that happened around 9:00 last night in the parking lot of the hyatt place hotel across the street from the bay street shopping center. witnesses tell investigators at least two men were shooting at each other from two different cars before they drove away. no injuries reported. right now in san jose, a manhunt is under way for two home invasion suspects who opened fire sending two people to the hospital. kpix 5's maria medina is live in san jose this morning with the very latest. maria. >> reporter: good morning, kenny. unfortunately, police have not released a description of the suspect. this happened just after 10:00 at a home on peach court off mclaughlin here in san jose. police say the two men forced their way into that home, had some sort of confrontation with two people inside before they shot them and then took off.

we spoke to one man who lives across the street. >> i heard that couple people tried to break in there and they had guns and they shot my stepson and his friend each in the leg. >> reporter: you can imagine it's put that neighborhood on edge. now, those two victims who were shot were taken to regional medical center. they are expected to be okay. but still so many questions in the case. for example, did the victims and the suspect know each other or was this random? and again, what do those suspects look like? live at sjpd, maria medina, kpix 5. new this morning, a fairfield man who had been facing dui charges is off the hook. kpix 5 reporter lisa chan live in the newsroom to explain why. lisa. >> reporter: anne, the solano county district attorney dropped a dui charge against a fairfield man even though she still believes he had drugs in

his system. however, blood tests were negative for every drug except caffeine. solano county district attorney abrams believes there was another drug in his system but it didn't show up in the test. toxicology experts say synthetic marijuana, performance-enhancing drugs like steroids and designer stimulants like bath assaults are rarely tested for in a dui blood test. >> so you could test for more drugs? >> absolutely. because then we would know what was in his system. >> reporter: abrams decided to drop the dui charge because she believes they can't proceed without a reasonable doubt. the defendant's attorney says he is relieved. >> when you tell this type of story to somebody, they naturally are not going to believe it. >> he is still being charged with reckless driving a misdemeanor. abrams received a lot of comments critical of the charge but it didn't influence her decision, she says, in this case. live in the newsroom, lisa

chan, kpix 5. hollywood legend debbie reynolds has died just juan day after her daughter actress carrie fisher died. reynolds launched to fame in the hollywood classic "singin' in the rain." she was also remembered for one of the most famous love triangles in hollywood. her first marriage to singer eddie fisher ended when he left her for her friend elizabeth taylor. years later she joked about it. she seemed to pass that sense of humor to her daughter carrie. >> are you proud of me? >> i am very proud of my daughter. wonderful gifted and very special daughter. >> debbie reynolds died yesterday after a stroke. she was 84. and flowers are being left around carrie fisher's makeshift star in hollywood. she never had an official walk of fame star so fans of hers created one for themselves. according to reynolds' son todd

fisher the last thing she said to him was that she missed her daughter and really wanted to be with her. he said that she died 30 minutes after saying that. the white house may announce today how it will retaliate against russia for its alleged efforts to influence the u.s. election. the sanctions will probably target leaders of the intelligence agency believed to be responsible for the cyber attacks that were allegedly authorized by president vladimir putin. president-elect donald trump is downplaying the alleged election hacking. roxana saberi has the sore story. >> reporter: on the steps of his mar-a-largo resort in florida, president-elect donald trump responded to the idea of possible sanctions against russia for its alleged hacking in the presidential election. >> i think we ought to get on with our lives. the whole, you know, age of computers has made it where nobody knows exactly what's going on. >> reporter: earlier in the day, republican senator lindsey graham of south carolina said on a trip to latvia that russia should be punished for meddling in the election.

>> i predict there will be bipartisan sanctions coming that will hit russia hard. >> i don't know what he is doing. i haven't spoken to senator graham. as you know, he ran against me. >> reporter: mr. trump also reacted to secretary of state john kerry's remarks criticizing israel for building settlements in disputed territories. >> the "two-state solution" is now in serious jeopardy. >> we have different views. we have to have peace. i think it set us back. but, um, we are going to see what happens after january 20th. right? >> reporter: the president- elect played down questions about a potential conflict of interest between his global business and his newest job. >> honestly, it's a very routine thing. it's not a big deal. you people are making that a big deal of the business because, hey, look, number one, when i won, they all knew i had a big business all over the place. >> reporter: despite days of tense remarks with president obama, the president-elect said the transition is going smoothly. >> he phoned me. we had a very nice conversation. >> reporter: roxana saberi for

cbs news. an inventor from the east coast has helped bring the hanukkah spirit back to san francisco. he sent a special menorah to replace the one that was stolen from washington square recently. this massachusetts man sent the last version of his personally designed pop-up menorahs and the local families spent a day putting it together. >> $400 to ship this. aside for what it's worth. there was no -- he said it's all on him. it's all, um, hanukkah gift. >> yeah. i did my part. >> the mobile menorah will stand tall in washington square come saturday for the last night of hanukkah. the commercial dungeness crab fishery in northern california just expanded but you may still have a tough time finding crabs or you might have to pay more for them. that is because crabbers from bodega bay north through washington and oregon went on strike yesterday over a price dispute. wholesale buyers want to lower the price the fishermen earn to

it this morning. clear skies and the warmest day this week and the last time we'll see temperatures in the 60s this year. the full forecast is coming up. traffic coming up also in less than four minutes. an experienced skier has died in an avalanche in washington's cascade range. the area had seen on-and-off snow, winds and other factors building up to a red level avalanche warning. it proved to be too much for adam roberts on tuesday. if you are going to the backcountry, have the right equipment like a beacon, shovel and special avalanche backpack. it's important to know the signs of trouble. >> cracking coming off of your skis or snowshoes. that's an indicator that you have a cohesive slab and you may have a weak layer underneath. >> and if you are caught in an avalanche, experts say that the best thing you can do is to try to exit the moving snow if possible. the winter storms are bringing so much ice to parts of canada, look at this, that some people are strapping on

their skates gliding down the street. some areas in ontario got so much freezing rain over christmas weekend [chuckling] that that 15 millimeters of ice made for a perfect rink. a big change for uber and lyft drivers in the new year. they are going to be facing stricter background checks. right now, state law dictates that background checks can only go back 7 years. well starting january 1, ridesharing companies will be able to look at a drive's entire criminal history. the companies can then be fined if drivers are found to have certain offenses in their past. lyft and uber didn't oppose it but the aclu says it goes too far. >> convictions appear on records after people have been rehabilitated and served their time. it's important we continue to provide re-entry opportunities for people following a conviction. >> last year, california's district attorneys did checks on some uber drivers and found more than 20 who had been

convicted of serious felonies. very creepy. >> yeah. time check, 5:15 right now. let's check the roads with roqui. good morning. good morning, everybody. it is 5:15. let's check the altamont pass traffic. what traffic, right? it's moving very nicely along the way. you're moving at 63 miles per hour and then 56 at north flynn road. north tracy boulevard to the altamont pass will just take you 15 minutes. and then into the dublin interchange, here's a live look that traffic moving well too altamont pass to 680 will take you 14 minutes. okay. moving over to the peninsula the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city will take 13 minutes between 880 and 101. northbound 101 from broadway burlingame and millbrae avenue two lanes closed until 6 a.m. but not causing many delays. traveling into san francisco here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. those metering lights should be turning on around 5:30 but it is "holiday light" so it might take them a little longer or they might not turn them on at all. from 80 westbound from carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze will take 18 minutes and no

delay across the span. moving over now to some roadwork in oakland, on eastbound 580 at 980, that is reduced to one lane until 6:30 and westbound 24 connector to eastbound 580 that right lane is closed until 6 a.m. so a lot of roadwork, but not many delays around the area. roberta, what are are you doing for new year's eve? >> i'm going to the elton john concert. >> ooo! >> right? >> that will be fun. >> i know. usually i work. so it's going to be kind of fun. thanks for asking. and i'm going to continue my love fest with sfo, my attraction to that brand-new tower. isn't that gorgeous? right there at sfo, standing 221 feet tall. yeah! all metal, shiny, love that design. hey, you know, the air traffic controllers tower gives them an optimum view of the airfield and so far this morning we have no delays at sfo mineta or oakland international airport.

you it's in the 30s now. clear skies in the 40s around the bay. it is 30 degrees now in santa rosa. it's 35 degrees in livermore. winds have been under 10 miles per hour. but when you have temperatures in the 30s it just takes a light wind like berkeley at nine to talk about a wind chill that makes it feel like low 30s in berkeley through grizzly peak early this morning. six-mile-per-hour winds in novato. weather watcher time. right now, dave in napa says it's 30 degrees. it's in the mid-30s in brentwood so says paul smith good morning to you sir. robert sullivan says it's in the high 30s around the peninsula and kim, you finally woke up early, thanks so much for joining us 41 degrees. now, you can expect today to be the last day of full sunshine here in the bay area for the rest of the year because tomorrow we are going to see big-time changes all the way through about tuesday, wednesday next week. daily chances of rain just minimal chances, but we are going to see a lot of colder air work into the bay area. low pressure here sinking to the south, high pressure there,

building in continuing to bask and strengthen and as it does so temperatures going up. futurecast clearly illustrates nothing going on until right there, friday morning. clouds begin to seep in from the south. we do see clouds and sun mix tomorrow. saturday rain chances increase. but saturday night not so much. we will have a dry new year's eve celebration. your travel weather today in throughout the central valley, lacking any kind of tule fog. 50s to 60. pick city, monterey bay, 67 degrees there today. it was 66 yesterday. forecasting 70 in carmel. 49 degrees in the high sierra. we're talking about a snow report. alpine meadows no new snow as of late but last weekend 15" did fall so lots of packed powder there. sugar bowl, gosh, want to be there, too. packed powder, 12 or 13 lifts available. highs today 50s and 60s. otherwise, we are going with an outside number today 70 degrees in santa cruz and capitola. the bottom falls out tomorrow, much cooler air mass and then we see the clouds and cooler conditions each week over the

weekend through wednesday. that is a look at your thursday forecast. sounds lovely. >> yeah, roberta. thank you. well, a college student in the northeast about american girl dowels. not a doll had prosthetics limbs so the built one. they are just what she studies at the university of hartford so last year she started her own business designing custom dolls. parents sent her pictures of what their kids would like to see and michela gets to work. one wisconsin girl was so pleased she named it michela. >> i was able to make her a leg that was rainbow and red and all her favorite colors and so make it look like her own leg. it was really cool to see, like, how happy she was to see it and the fact that she wanted to name it after me was really, really special. >> michela's dolls are also used as a teaching tool to help little girls learn about how their own prosthetics work.

jose. police say two men forced their way inside a home with a confrontation with two people inside before they shot them and took off. we spoke to a man who lives across the street and he said it was his stepson and a friend who were shot in the leg. now, those two victims were taken to regional medical center. they are expected to be okay. but again, so many questions remain and the biggest question is whether this was random. maria medina, kpix 5. of a fairfield man was charged with driving under the influence after only caffeine was found in his system. lisa chan reports. >> reporter: it's been 16 minutes since the 36-year-old was pulled over on 680 driving home in fairfield. he was weaving in and out of traffic and almost caused several collisions. he in this he was under the influence of drugs but blood

tests were negative for every drug except caffeine. the solano district attorney still believes some drugs other than caffeine was in his system but it didn't show up on the test. >> i believe that you cannot proceed beyond a reasonable doubt on that charge. >> reporter: toxicology experts say performance-enhancing and other drugs are rarely tested for in a dui blood test. but after abrams spoke with forensic toxicologists and investigators wednesday, she felt she had to drop the dui charge. the man's attorney says he is relieved. >> when you tell this type of story to somebody they naturally are not going to believe it. >> abrams says she received a lot of critical comments for the dui charge but didn't let it influence her decision to drop it. schwab will still be charged with reckless driving a misdemeanor. live in the newsroom, lisa chan, kpix 5. people around the world are

mourning actress debbie reynolds who died one day after her daughter carrie fisher passed away. back in 2005, reynolds struck just the right chord at san francisco's castro theater with this remark. >> i have never been as close to a man that didn't want me. >> reynolds was accustomed to catching eyes. besides starring in classics like "singin' in the rain," the actress got married three times including eddie fisher who later married her friend elizabeth taylor. quite the scandal at the time. one reporterrers are reynolds and her daughter had fun comparing careers. >> i was with both of them at the berkeley repertoire theater when carrie did her one woman show and debbie said that same thing. she says, you know, i was a bigger star than you are. you've only done one movie. look at all the movies i have done. so much comedy with the two of them. >> well, the mother's last

words were that she wanted to be with carrie. "star wars" fans in southern california felt a candlelight vigil was too tame to honor carrie fisher. instead some 200 people gathered in anaheim and mourned carrie fisher by raising light sabres. the san francisco fire department is investigating a smell over into the in parts of the city. the second night this week that they have gotten calls about the foul smell in several different areas including near the fairmont hotel. residents say it smells like rotten eggs or sulfur. we tried to contact pg&e and are waiting for a response. >> very strange. >> it wasn't the cheese curds that ann brought from wisconsin. >> no. we are going to do a cheese tasting later in the show. but no reports of any delays. 30 in santa rosa, mid-30s in the tri-valley. 37 in [ rooster crowing ] these temperatures in comparison to yesterday a little bit warmer by about 3 and 4 degrees. san francisco 24 hours ago it was 45 degrees. the winds have been slight up to about 7 miles per hour. but when you factor in like a 7- mile-per-hour winds in half moon bay and the air temperature right now there is at 40, it feels like it's in the 30s. across the bay, we have pretty slight breezes but these winds will be replaced with east and northeast winds later this afternoon. that's an offshore push up to 15 miles per hour. calm conditions with clear skies. nothing going on. not a cloud in the vicinity. today in san jose by lunchtime temperatures in the low 50s but by the middle afternoon hours even though your average high is around 58, forecasting 63 at

mineta international airport, the official reporting station, but going with 65 degrees in the rose garden district. 50s and 60s in the area. roqui has the traffic. >> hey, roberta. it's looking good on the roads throughout the bay area. if you are heading out the door you'll be all right. let's start with the golden gate bridge. headed from marin county into san francisco, that's 14 minutes between 580 in san rafael and the golden gate toll plaza. if you are heading across the span of the bay bridge, another great commute from carquinez bridge along carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze no delays, 19 minutes. no metering lights. i predict they won't turn them on because it is "holiday light." san mateo bridge, 13 minutes between 880 and 101 and then mass transit is looking good. bart ace muni and caltrain are all on time. but we have some updates for you. for holiday schedules, muni express buses most of those

will not be running this week because of the holiday. larkspur ferry will be running on a reduced schedule but the sausalito ferry is on a regular schedule. i'll send it to you. >> all right, roqui. thank you. it is 5:38. san jose police say the driver responsible for a deadly crash on christmas morning should have never been behind the wheel. jessica zamora had a misdemeanor warrant out for her arrest. last night people stopped by the memorial for 14-year-old andrew nguyen. they were both killed when she smashed head on into his car. she was drunk at the time of the crash. we are getting a look at the violent confrontation between former 49er ray mcdonald and his ex-fiancee. this video is extremely disturbing. the attorney says he walked in uninvited to the apartment he rented her last may and their baby post split in 2015 at 4

a.m. mcdonald was arrested for domestic abuse and false imprisonment. but the charges were later dropped. now the woman's attorney wants to use it to prove that mcdonald shouldn't have custody of their 20-month-old little boy. >> i find that video one of the most horrifying i have seen in 46 years of practice. >> kpix 5 tried to reach out to mcdonald and his most recent attorney. the attorney who represented him last no longer works for the former football star. in oakland, city leaders are rushing to get lead out of tap water. that's after a new study shows levels in fruitvale are far worse than in flint, michigan. the reuters news agency research shows of 500 kids tested in fruitvale 7.5% had elevated lead levels in their blood. industrial pollutants, freeways and aging pipes appear to be the key sources of that lead. long-term exposure can cause anemia and learning disabilities. and now locals are pushing for a quick fix.
