in for michelle griego. and i'm kenny choi. right now in san jose, a manhunt is underwa on suspects - who good morning. it's thursday, december 29. i'm anne makovec in for michelle this morning. >> i'm kenny choi. right now in san jose, a manhunt is under way for two home invasion suspects who opened fire on their victims according to police. kpix 5's maria medina is live in san jose with the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: police have not yet released the description of the suspect. this happened on palm beach court last night off mclaughlin here in san jose.
they broke in, they shot the suspects and ran. >> they broke in had guns and shot my stepson and his friend each in the leg. >> reporter: he went on to say that normally that neighborhood is pretty quiet. now, the two victims who were shot they were taken to regional medical center. they are expected to be okay. but so many questions remain in this case. for example, did the victims and the suspects know each other or was this random? what do the suspects look like? live in san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. she sang and danced her way into the hearts of millions and now family, friends and fans are remembering the life of debbie reynolds. as roxana saberi reports, she had a stroke just one day after the death of her daughter, carrie fisher. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: sunshiny teenaged star of the 1952 classic "singin' in the rain" died wednesday just a day after her
daughter actor carrie fisher who had a heart attack on a flight to l.a. from london. >> wonder if it didn't have something to do with bringing on a stroke. it's very sad. >> reporter: in this video in tmz reynolds was taken by los angeles to a hospital after a strike and died later in the day. >> it's too much over christmas. christmas will never be the same. >> reporter: her son todd was with her. >> the last thing she said to me is that she really missed her daughter and really wanted to be with her and literally, 30 minutes later she was -- she had this stroke and that's exactly what she did. >> reporter: in hollywood, fans left flowers and candles at a makeshift memorial at her star on the walk of fame. >> it's been a joy a wonderful career a great life. >> reporter: george takei said there's nothing harder than having to bury a child. debbie died with a broken heart. shatner tweeted debbie reynolds was one of the last of hollywood royalty. it breaks my heart that she is
gone. i had hoped that my grieving was done for 2016. >> i tried to make it through my life through turbulence. in fact, i just finished a -- my last book. and only one about my last years. i said i'll make it into time for me to kick it. >> reporter: roxana saberi for cbs news, new york. >> during her career, reynolds was nominated for more than a dozen awards including golden globes, emmys and an oscar. she is survived by her son todd and granddaughter billie lourd. time check, 6:03. let's check the roads with roqui. >> thank you, kenny. okay, 6:03. let's go ahead and take a look at mass transit. we have a capitol corridor delay but first, bart, ace trains one and three and muni all on time. muni express buses most of those will not be running this week due to the holiday schedule. but, of course, there's only two days left in the workweek so you will be all right.
cap corridor delayed 45 minutes train 421 late because of freight train traffic. moving over now to your roads, looking at the altamont pass traffic not bad at all. 63 miles per hour, 57 miles per hour, once you hit north flynn road on to the dublin interchange. but we do have a problem in sunol on the sunol grade vargas road on-ramp now closed to southbound 680 due to a rollover crash but the delays are not there. traffic is moving smoothly throughout the area so you will be all right if this is part of your morning commute. just take another on-ramp to the southbound 680. let's take a look at the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city. that's 880 to 101 will take a quick 13 minutes and across the span of the bay bridge, you're moving smoothly into san francisco. carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze will take you 19 minutes and those toll lights are not on. i'll send it to you, roberta. >> are there more people on the roads today, roqui? >> not really. >> i thought so when i was come in at o dark00. there was a little bit of a flow out there. >> really? >> let's take a bird's-eye view out towards the golden
gate bridge. it is quiet. i love this view wanted to share it with you. we have clear skies, we have an air temperature now that's dipped to 29 degrees in santa rosa. yesterday was at 28. probably still fall off another degree. 34 in livermore. 35 in redwood city. we are in the 30s in san jose across the santa clara valley and now jumped up to 50 in san francisco. 46 in oakland. a little bit more mild this morning around the bay. the winds have now trailed off at calm. east-northeast winds at 6 in half moon bay. that's an offshore flow. and with that offshore component today we have drier air mass. there's the wind east 13 in napa. you couple that up with an air temperature at 30 degrees right now, windchill factor makes it feel like it's in the 20s stepping on out. my pick city today with the sunshine is santa cruz. 71 degrees due to that northeast offshore flow. check out the swells building to 12 feet. that's double overhead so
please be mindful of that at the beach. enjoy it. this is the last day of full sunshine from the coast to our inland areas. it will turn partly cloudy and much cooler friday and then in and out of the clouds all the way through wednesday. today's high 50s and 60s. we'll talk more about the new year's eve forecast coming up at 18 after the hour. gang. roberta, thanks. starting today palo alto's tap water won't be coming from hetch hetchy. the public utilities existing is changing it to local reservoirs to allow for months of inspections and repairs of a key pipeline connecting to kenny choi. officials say this new mix of water may taste earthy and even a slight odor. the flow from hetch hetchy returns march of next year. east palo alto is planning to sue its neighbor over plans for future development. the dispute centers on a proposal to build thousands of new homes and new retail space in menlo park in the bay front and bellhaven areas. east palo alto officials say that the plan doesn't meet state environmental standards.
a surprising substance led to a fairfield man getting charged last year with driving under the influence. kpix 5's lisa chan live in the newsroom to explain why the d.a.'s office is now dropping the charges. >> reporter: anne, the solano county district attorney decided to drop a dui charge against a fairfield man even though she still believes he had drugs in his system. however, blood tests for joseph schwab came back negative for every drug except caffeine. solano county district attorney christian abrams believes there was another drug in his system but didn't show up in the test. toxicology experts say synthetic marijuana, performance-enhancing drugs like steroids, and designer stimulants like bath salts are rarely tested for in a dui blood test. >> so they could test for more drugs? >> absolutely because then we would know what was notice system. >> reporter: -- what was in the system. >> reporter: abrams dropped the charge because she believes they can't proceed without a reasonable doubt. schwab's attorney says he is relieved. >> and when you tell this type
of story to somebody, they naturally are not going to believe it. >> schwab is still being charged with reckless driving which is a misdemeanor. abrams says there were comments critical of the dui charge but she says it didn't influence her decision in this case. live in the newsroom, lisa chan, kpix 5. new concerns over california allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver's licenses. as president-elect donald trump prepares to take office, some of those licenseholders fear they will be targeted for deportation. the feds can access dmv information like names and addresses but dmv officials say that information does not indicate immigration status. more than 800,000 illegal immigrants have gotten licenses. california's former lieutenant governor is in the running for a position in the trump administration. abel maldonado met with the president-elect yesterday. he is a potential pick for u.s. agriculture secretary. the republican is the son of
immigrants and grew up on a family farm. if he is nominated and confirmed, he would be the only latino so far to get a cabinet position. key players are reacting to secretary of state john kerry's speech in which he laid out the obama administration's position on arab-israeli peace. kerry warned israel that a two- state solution with the palestinians is in serious jeopardy. and he defended the united states' decision to abstain from a vote on the u.n. resolution condemning israeli settlements in the west bank and east jerusalem. essentially it allows the measure to pass but israel isn't buying it. >> secretary kerry said that the united states cannot vote against its own policy. but that's exactly what it did at the u.n. >> president-elect donald trump isn't buying it, either. he tweeted in part, quote, we cannot continue to let israel be treated with such total disdain and disrespect. it used to have a great friend in the u.s. but not anymore.

san francisco skyline. at least for now. the height will be surpassed by the "salesforce" tower still under construction. we can see the tip-top of the pyramid which means we have clear skies. the full forecast is coming up in less than four minutes. thanks, roberta. we are learning more about a christmas morning crash that killed a teen boy in san jose. police say the driver responsible should have never been driving. jessica zamora had a misdemeanor dui warrant out for her arrest. last night people stopped by this memorial for 14-year-old andrew nguyen. he and zamora were both killed when she smashed head on into the car he was riding in on capitol expressway. police believe she was drunk at the time of the crash. snow and ice led to a pile- up involving at least 25 vehicles west of denver. it was a mess on the roads. crews had to shut down one side of the interstate. a local reporter was also involved in the accident and talked to a driver who saw the
entire thing. >> i was going pretty slow and i saw brake lights and stuff and all of a sudden people just started sliding sideways trying to brake and all of a sudden people were sideways up here and sitting there flying into each other. i stopped but i'm just watching these cars flying into each other. >> there were no major injuries. but plenty of damage to vehicles out there. all right. of the bay area certainly has some bridges with spectacular views but nothing quite like this. >> the world's highest bridge just opened in china. check it out. it's the [ non-english name ] bridge. it is about 200 stories high. that is over 1850 feet off the ground. the golden gate bridge is only 220 feet above the water. construction on this $150 million structure took more than three years. the dungeness crab fishery off the california coast was expanded today. but there may be no one to catch the holiday favorites. trappers from bodega bay north
went on strike yesterday afternoon according to the "pressdemocrat." it is in response to an attempt by wholesalers to pay a lower price for crabs caught in the newly opened zones compared to the ones that opened on time. the strike could impact dungeness crab prices and they may be harder to find. >> who needs crab when you have cheese? >> that's right. >> i just brought this fresh from wisconsin, you guys. they are called cheese curds. and none of these people have heard of them yet. >> we he were talking about this last week. >> oh, please bring some. >> so we are going to try it. pass. if you are coming out of tracy -- [ loud speaking in the background ] >> i'm a fan. cheese curds, the wisconsin cheese. moving down to the altamont pass and moving about 60 miles per hour but we have a situation on the sunol grade here. slow traffic due to onlookers. people, mind your business, okay? vargas road on-ramp to southbound 680 is shut down because of an overturned car there so it's causing onlooker traffic and traffic is moving at now 62 miles per hour. before this it was just down to 40. moving over now to the san mateo bridge, from hayward to foster city, that's 880 to 101, that will take you about 14 minutes. and if you are traveling into downtown san francisco, you are looking good on 80 westbound from carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze that's 19 minutes and expect no delay across the span, those metering lights are not even on. i'll send it to you, roberta, and your cheese curds and -- and -- i -- >> i guess you could watch these while watching the packers lose. so please be very mindful of that at the coast today. we are going to be seeing temperatures around santa cruz in the low 70s, 68 degrees in monterey bay. carmel 75 degrees. locally around the immediate bay area, 58 degrees at rockaway beach. high 50s in san francisco which is warmer than yesterday. across the bay 60 in oakland. low 60s tri-valley. mid-60s around the santa clara valley. 58 to 62 degrees in the santa rosa area. again, pick cities monterey 68: carmel valley 75. low 70s in santa cruz. here's your extended forecast. want to walk you through this because we have cooler temperatures tomorrow. increasing cloud cover partly cloudy so today's the sunniest day left in 2016. then it all goes downhill. daily chances minimal chances of rain from saturday through sunday all the way into wednesday. temperatures take a huge nosedive only into the 50s. so what does this spell out for your fireworks forecast? on new year's eve at the

good morning. i'm kenny choi. >> i'm anne makovec. a home invasion ends with two people shot and a search for armed suspects. kpix 5's maria medina is live in san jose with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, kenny. we just learned in the last few minutes that the victim did not know the suspects. it happened last night on peach court in san jose. police say two men forced their way into a home. they have some sort of confrontation with the two victims before they shot them and then took off. now, we spoke to one man who lives across the street and he said it was his stepson and his friend both shot in the leg. they were taken to regional medical center. they will be okay. the police said that the victims did not know the suspects. police have not released a description of them.
live at sjpd, maria medina, kpix 5. emeryville police will be examining surveillance video after a shooting outside a hotel that happened around 9 p.m. last night in the parking lot of hyatt place hotel. witnesses telling investigators that the gunmen were shooting at each other from two cars before they sped off. no injuries reported. but investigators found shell casings and shattered glass in the parking lot. in oakland, city leaders are scrambling to get lead out of tap water. this is after a new study showed leveled in the fruitvale area could be far worse than in flint, michigan. the reuters news agency research shows that of 500 children tested in fruitvale, 7.5% had elevated lead levels in their blood. the main sources? aging pipes, industrial pollutants and freeways. long-term exposure can cause anemia or learning disabilities but locals are stressing they want a quick fix. >> you had warehouses here for forever. and so therefore, the contaminations -- there's some properties where you can't build because the soil
contamination is so deep. >> my daughter is diabetic so i want to make sure that she has freshwater. >> now, in this latest reuters study, it showed the rest of the bay area is in the clear since these toxicity levels are only dangerous in fruitvale. a ski lodge that shot up in flames on lake tahoe's west shore is re-opening today. this is a look at the devastating scene at the homewood mountain resort after yesterday's early-morning fire. dozens of firefighters spent hours in chilly temperatures dousing the flames. resort crews tried to salvage anything they could after the fire destroyed their administrative building and a restaurant. >> the people that work here are wonderful. the people that are on the mountain are very friendly. so it's just kind of a sad thing to see this happen. >> investigators are now sifting through the ashes to find the cause of the fire. time now for a look at weather with three days left in 2016. >> so exciting. >> to turn the calendar. >> me, too. it's been one of those years.

mount diablo which is a good 45 miles away from san francisco so we could say visibility is unlimited at this time. temperatures dip to 29 degrees in santa rosa. it's near freezing in throughout the tri-valley. it's 35 degrees in redwood city. very little movement in the temperatures across the santa clara valley in the 30s but we have jumped up to 50 in san francisco, 46 east of the bay in oakland. now we see the blue highlighted areas where the winds have been picking up along the coast an east-northeast wind at 6 in half moon bay. that's an offshore flow. east wound now at 7 in san ramon. we are getting winds up to 13 in napa but when you couple it up with the current air temperature of 30 degrees it feels like it's 20 as far as the windchill factor is concerned. all right. my pick city today let's go! it's a roadie, santa cruz, 71 degrees. carmel mid-70s. can you imagine what it's like to play golf in carmel today at pebble beach? wow! monterey bay 68 degrees. when i say 68, that's almost

that's a quick 14 minutes. i'll send it to you, ann. >> thanks, roqui. people around the world are mourning actress debbie reynolds who died one day after her daughter carrie fisher died. back in 2005 reynolds brought down the house in san francisco castro theater. she told the crowd she had never been with so many men who didn't want her. [ laughter ] >> after all, besides starring in classics, reynolds herself was mar ride three times. one of those marriages was to carrie fisher's father eddie fisher who left her and married elizabeth taylor. that was quite the scandal at the time. "star wars" fans felt a candlelight vigil was too basic for carrie fisher so they gathered in anaheim and raised lighted sabres. a fairfield man had been facing serious charges for driving under the influence of coffee. kpix 5's lisa chan is live in the newsroom and tells us those charges were eventually dropped but he is not completely off the hook.
lisa. >> reporter: kenny, it's been 16 months since 36-year-old joseph schwab was pulled over on interstate 680 as he drove to his fairfield home. an alcohol beverage control agent says he was weaving in and out of traffic and almost caused several accidents. he believes schwab was under the influence of a drug but blood tests came back negative for every drug kept caffeine. solano county district attorney christian abrams still believes some drugs other than caffeine was in his system but it didn't show up on the test. >> i believe that we cannot proceed beyond a reasonable doubt on that specific charge. >> reporter: experts say synthetic marijuana, performance-enhancing drugs like steroids and designer stimulants like bath salts are rarely tested for in a dui blood test. but after abrams spoke with forensic toxicologists and investigators wednesday, she felt she had to drop the dui charge. his attorney says he is relieved. >> and when you tell this type of story to somebody, they

congress will investigate the russian involvement in our elections and i predict sanctions coming that will hit russia hard. >> president-elect donald trump has dismissed allegations of russian interference and questioned u.s. intelligence agency. the president-elect may soon find himself at odds with the nation's biggest veterans groups. a transition official says trump is considering steps to privatize the department of veterans affairs. the goal would be to give vets full choice over their healthcare. but many veterans groups argue it will reduce the quality of care over the long term. time now 6:40. a popular restaurant chain with locations all over the bay area suddenly closing with no explanation. >> and the holiday spirit alive and well for san francisco jews despite an effort to spoil the season. we'll be right back. ,,
