reported for muni or caltrain. we are also tracking a pretty slow ride along the eastshore freeway. be prepared. carquinez bridge to the maze 32 minutes. back to you. >> thank you. right now, a santa rosa pet store is boarded up. this after a car crashed right through the front window last night. the village pets and supply store is a part of a strip mall at montgomery drive. the fire department tweeted out photos of the damage. we are told that no one was injured. two recent pedestrian deaths in san francisco have sparked calls for safety improvements on several streets in the city. kpix 5's anne makovec is live in san francisco this morning on steps the transportation officials are taking today to protect people. anne. >> reporter: they are taking a vote on a package of sweeping changes for the city's roadways and here's one of them behind me. you can see this is a dicey intersection. it is the beginning of the castro district so a lot of people walk in this area and

that is the on- and off-ramp for highway 101. so that is where we saw an accident just a couple of days ago. this is one of the areas the city is focusing in on here on market street from octavia to castro and that's after two deadly accidents in the past two days. a 77-year-old woman was killed crossing the street saturday night at lake merced boulevard. a pickup hit her. and then yesterday morning a 56- year-old man died here at market and octavia hit by a car at the on-ramp. >> these crashes are happening on high injury corridors. but the good news, if we know where crashes are going to happen and why, we can prevent them. >> reporter: 70% of san francisco's serious traffic crashes happened on 12% of the city's streets. so the plan up for a vote today would add expanded medians, islands and wider corners. the san francisco municipal transit district is taking a vote on that plan at 1:00 today at city hall.

live in san francisco, anne makovec, kpix 5. closing arguments are set to begin today in the trial of the man accused of killing sierra lamar. if convicted, he could face the death penalty. kpix 5's sandra osborne is live in san jose where the trial has been going on for months. sandra. >> reporter: this is also the man who is accused of attempting to kidnap three women before the disappearance of sierra lamar. 26-year-old antolin garcia- torres has pleaded not guilty to the charges accused of abducting and kidnapping -- excuse me, abducting and killing sierra lamar back in 2012. she was just 15. the trouble with the case is that her body was never found. now, throughout the trial, we have heard lots of discussion about other physical evidence key to this trial. >> it's clear from this case that the battleground is going to be the dna evidence. and what the defense did -- suggested it was contaminated at the beginning.

>> reporter: the physical evidence is significant. it includes dna found in garcia- torres's car and on lamar's clothing found in a field near her home. most recently inside the courtroom we heard from a digital evidence forensic examiner who says sierra lamar loved social media even used twitter and email up until the morning of her disappearance. closing arguments are set to begin at 9:00 this morning. we have been told that garcia- torres will not testify. jury deliberations very hard to predict but with something like the death penalty on the table it could take a little while. live in san jose, sandra osborne, kpix 5. the man accused of a deadly shooting rampage at oikos university in oakland is due in court today to plead. one goh is charged with 7 counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder. a judge recently decided he is fit to stand trial. the shooting happened in april of 2012. prosecutors say that the former

nursing student dropped out of oikos university several months wanted his tuition refunded. his hearing gets under way at 9 a.m. a man was last seen at a south pasadena park with his father. today los angeles county supervisors will vote on approving a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest or conviction in his disappearance. the father was arrested and then released. president trump as has a direct line to moscow today. on his "to do" list a call with russian president vladimir putin. the white house won't say what topics will be discussed on the call. syria and north korea are candidates. >> at a young age he assumed power. a lot of people tried to take that power away, obviously he

every day. you can also have a great view at the end of the path. it's been in the works for the path few years. it was completed in october and now it will be open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. for anyone who wants to bike, walk, run and plans don't stop here. >> the metropolitan transportation commission is working on engineering designs to create a bike and pedestrian path that would link yerba buena island to downtown san francisco. that's still in the design phase. >> reporter: the path stops short at treasure island treasure. ultimately the goal is to have a bike and walking path walt all the way to downtown san francisco.

they will be kicking off the 7 days a week bay bridge bike path. reporting live, jessica flores, kpix 5. odor complaints and concerns about cannabis related crime are reportedly driving the possible ban. the cities of sonoma and rohnert park have already decided to prohibit the outdoor cultivation of pot. late today, palo alto's city officials are going to address their $6 million deficit. they are trying to figure out how to bring more money in with all the extra expenses. the city plans to hire a police department spokesman which will cost nearly $200,000. it's also conducting a parking study which will cost another $150,000. to help with the cost, a city manager wants to take nearly $3 million from a city reserve fund. the city of lafayette wants

we are tracking slowdowns for drivers. but things are looking good for drivers along 880. this is heading through oakland. those taillights on the right side of the screen heading northbound as you make your way from 238 to the maze. still an easy ride. let's take it over to we are tracking some delays for drivers making their way along southbound 680 all due to annie accident near mission boulevard. heads up heading through the sunol great. that's a check of traffic. michelle? thank you. a 3.0 earthquake hit santa monica just before 10:30 last night. the epicenter was about 2 miles northwest of santa monica. experts at the usgs say santa monica is on a significant fault. this could be a foreshock.

there are no reports of damage or injuries. a live look at "sierra at tahoe" now where there are concerns over the snowpack melting in the spring heat. it is double its normal level. in sacramento county, county officials are already warning boaters and other recreational users about high flows on the american river due to that runoff. let's check the forecast with roberta. >> that is a real concern because we have the merced river that is a tributary of the san joaquin river and it flows from the sierra nevada and then it takes a turn through the san joaquin valley into the steep and swift river of the yosemite area. and that's where we anticipate some flooding tomorrow about a foot above flood stage the merced river in yosemite. sunrise from mount vaca, good morning, everybody, official sunrise at 6:12. wow! that is gorgeous. right now, we have temperatures in the 50s and 60s. light winds

around the bay. but once we go north of the golden gate bridge, we have 12 to 15-mile-per-hour winds. these winds will be sustained later today again 12 to 15. 20 during the afternoon hours. visibility is unlimited. take a look at sutro tower looking out towards sausalito and tiburon. you can see forever this morning. here's what you need to know. first off today, another unseasonably warm to hot day away from the water. a repeat performance for your wednesday and then, as we forge forward towards your thursday and friday a big cooldown by 20 degrees inland. now, we saw a few high, thin clouds across the horizon. that's all right there. but the bulk of the clouds all diverting to the north of us banking off the huge ridge of high pressure. and this is strengthening closer and closer to the state of california. now, upstream we do have an area of low pressure by friday. that's going to divert that jet stream more to the south. and when you have the water temperature at 51 degrees as it is right now, we are going to

see the return of the development of the onshore push and that's going to knock our temperatures back significantly. here's your futurecast. beginning with tomorrow at lunchtime, you see the return of the stratus lining the coast that thickens by thursday morning. and then as the day progresses on thursday, into your friday, it pushes more onshore. there is your cooldown. until then, today central valley into the mid- to high 80s. 64 degrees in the greater lake tahoe area currently it's freezing. sunrise 6:12. it will set tonight at 8:01. pollen, okay, now let's explain this. the pollen is usually way more off the chart as far as its counts are concerned but we have the northwest wind at 20. so we are having problems today, tomorrow, less pollen being ushered around with only a northwest wind at 5. temperatures today 70s, 80s and low 90s.

of witness testimony. those closing arguments expected to begin at 9:00 this morning before the jurors will begin deliberations. 26-year-old antolin garcia- torres who could face the death penalty is accused of murdering 15-year-old sierra lamar in 2012. her body was never found. cameras have not been allowed inside the courtroom for the trial. we have video from previous hearings and courtroom sketches. the main focus for the prosecution throughout the trial is other physical key evidence including dna found in garcia-torres's car and on lamar's clothing found in a field near her home outside morgan hill. garcia-torres has two children and has been in custody since 2012. by the way he is also accused of attempting to kidnap three other women back in 2009. he pled not guilty to all charges. closing arguments set to begin at 9:00 this morning but if you are wondering whether or not he will testify in court, he has confirmed with the judge that

he will not. live in san jose, sandra osborne, kpix 5. san francisco police are looking for a gunman who killed a 15-year-old while the teen was driving. police say the suspect opened fire on sunset boulevard. it happened around noon yesterday. police think the teen was targeted. the victim hasn't been identified yet. the 16-year-old passenger survived the shooting and so far no arrests. new this morning an inmate who escaped from a sonoma county jail is back behind bars. deputies believe richard medina tied bedsheets together and climbed a fence. they tracked him down at a home in windsor yesterday. he was supposed to be released in september but he will now face more charges. >> we are warming up. it is hot caliente! >> 91 degrees in my backyard yesterday and my garden no longer exists. i mean, it was doing so good and so healthy and i was so disappointed. >> use a little miracle-gro. it will help. >> i do the natural thing.

the full forecast is coming up. here's jaclyn. >> we have delays at the bay bridge toll plaza. this is no big shocker. we have traffic backed up beyond the maze and you can see it's very crowded. you will need sunglasses. it's about a 34-minute ride as you make your way from the carquinez bridge to the maze. and a little under 30 minutes from the maze into downtown san francisco. no reports of any accidents in the south bay but we are tracking those slowdowns along northbound 101 as you make your way from 680 on up towards 880 and beyond. and we are tracking some slowdowns in the north bay. we'll take it to 101 from east washington, 15 minutes. golden gate bridge no problems. to politics this morning, president trump is taking heat for telling bloomberg news that

john chiang $5 million. antonio villaraigosa about $3 million. they hope to succeed governor jerry brown in next year's elections. today in sacramento, university of california president janet napolitano will attend a hearing on an audit of the uc system at issue a secret fund with $175 million. the state auditor found the university reportedly overestimated its operating costs and spent less money than the budget allotted. university officials disagree with the claims. the surplus funds were revealed as california students face a tuition hike. uber is taking legal action to block san francisco from information on its drivers. the city wants the information including their home addresses in order to notify drivers that they are required to get business licenses like all other small enterprises in san francisco. uber has filed a petition in the san francisco superior court and is expected to file a

motion to get visited subpoena today. happening today east bay cyclists have a new place to ride on weekdays. kpix 5's jessica flores is live at yerba buena island with the story. >> reporter: starting today the, the bay bridge bike path will be open 7 days a week and the $2 million recreational facility will include a restroom, bike path and gorgeous views of the bay looking east. now, this all started a couple years ago the plans for this. the 2.2-mile path has been in the works for years. for the last three years the path stopped short of yerba buena island and it was completed in october but only open during weekends starting today it will be open 7 days a week from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. for anyone who wants to bike, walk or run but the path doesn't go all the way to treasure island. transportation officials say those plans are still in the works. still, they are celebrating the

path opening 7 days a week. it's a big win. >> the u.s. coast guard was a great partner here. we are building on their property. and so we are only able to bring this about because of a lease agreement with them allowing to us build this and so it's, you know, to the public we just want them to enjoy it but i think it's also good to know that this is a multi-agency collaboration. >> reporter: right now, cyclists and pedestrians have to hop on a shuttle if they want to go all the way to treasure island and ultimately the goal here is to go all the way to downtown san francisco s but that's still years away. the path to treasure island is expected by 2019. so today city leaders will gather here behind me and they are already prepping for that as you can see cleaning the roads here as city leaders gather. they are going to do a ribbon cutting later today at 10 a.m. for the vista point. reporting live on yerba buena island, i'm jessica flores, kpix 5. >> that's going to be a nice

that passenger dr. david dao has reached a financial settlement with the airline. the trump administration is scaling back on the healthy school lunch program. yesterday, the secretary of agriculture postponed certain restrictions that were put in place by the former first lady michelle obama. he is allowing more sodium on the menu as well as nonwhole grain products. the department says that the changes are based on student and school feedback. online review site angie's list is up for sale and investors aren't happy with the earnings report from a bay area tech company. kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks reports. >> reporter: good morning. angie's list being bought by iac corporation for just over $500 million. iac owns home adviser wants to pair the two sites up. now this deal is not a sure thing. three law firms have already announced investigations into whether or not angie's list's board breached its fiduciary responsibilities because it's

garcia tor i'm sandra osborne live in san jose at the santa clara hall of justice where we are closer now to learning the fate of the man accused of kidnapping and murdering 15- year-old sierra lamar back in 2012. the closing arguments of the trial are set to begin this morning for accused murderer antolin garcia-torres. although her body was never found, prosecutors believe he abducted and killed the teen five years ago. prosecutors are focused on other physical key evidence to the trial including dna found in garcia-torres' car and on her clothes in a field outside her house near morgan hill. he is also accused of attempted kidnapping of three other women in 2009. he pled not guilty to all charges. the death penalty or life in prison without parole are potential charges he will be facing if convicted. the closing arguments begin this morning at 9:00. that's when they are scheduled. however, the defendant does not plan on testifying in court. live in san jose, sandra
