[ laughter ] >> jimmy: what was it like to be -- were you an actor at this age? did you start acting young? or did you -- >> i started acting in 8th grade. >> jimmy: you did? >> yeah, we -- i was in a drama class, and we had a a professional actress for a a teacher, and we did a spring

[ light laughter ] and the night of the play, i started a speech at the dinner table, talking to my family, and i forgot everything i was going to say, so i stood up and started walking around the table and just making things up. >> jimmy: is that right? >> yeah. and i sat back down again and one of the class bullies was in the play. he was going to pound me, but the teacher was really hot. she gave me a real big hug and a kiss. and she dug it, yeah. >> jimmy: she said good for you, man. >> so never learn your lines. >> jimmy: yeah, exactly. don't learn your lines. but this is -- this is exciting, because the play that you're in right now -- so you're doing "the front page," and one of the first plays that you ever did in new york city was with nathan lane. >> yeah, i think it was the first play i did in the city when i was -- when i got my union card with nathan lane and my friend, dan florek. who was on "law and order: svu" and "law and order" for years.
out then. >> jimmy: what was the play? do you remember? >> "midsummer night's dream." >> jimmy: shakespeare? >> the disco version. [ laughter ] it was the '70s. >> jimmy: wow. >> and yeah, our director had a a vision. >> jimmy: wow. [ laughter ] did that work? >> no, but it was fun. [ laughter ] we had a -- we're not getting paid anyway and there was a a newspaper strike when we opened, so we didn't get any reviews except for a german language paper called aufbau. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: and did they enjoy it? >> jimmy: i want to see that. a disco version of a "midsummer night's dream." >> it was the '70s, going into the '80s. >> jimmy: i cannot wait to see you in this play. what is "the front page" about if someone doesn't know? it's been around for a long time. they -- "his girl friday." >> 1928 is when it opened. it was written by charles macarthur/ben hecht. it moves like a freight train, man. it just goes. yeah, and it's -- >> jimmy: and it's funny. >> it's funny. >> jimmy: it's good stuff.

[ laughter ] >> jimmy: you gotta see it. >> we have to run home. and we ran home to go watch. >> jimmy: "family feud," like celebrity "family feud" episode and cecily strong played you. [ light laughter ] >> with our friendship. and my sister was like, "i told you you'd be friends!" [ laughter ] >> jimmy: and it was so great. a taste, a tasty taste of the "hamilton" mix tape that i can't even tell you, it's so good. it is beyond good. >> that's thanks to these guys. >> jimmy: yeah, the roots. [ light laughter ] the play is written, so i'm just the proud grandparent and i'm just like, "you're so young." >> jimmy: look at what i did. look at this. amazing, yes. look at this. yesterday's guest emily blunt. >> jimmy: exactly. >> a practically perfect mary poppins. >> jimmy: yeah, exactly, yeah. well, you got a lot of stuff happening. i want to talk about the documentary that airs on -- it's on pbs, october 21st at 9:00 p.m. it's a friday. you have to -- if you didn't see "hamilton" yet, if you did, of course, see this. but if you haven't, watch this. i can't believe the footage you got. >> well, it's crazy, so the director, alex, started filming me before i even knew what it was, so he's filming me writing "my shot" and he's filming me writing all these songs. >> jimmy: i mean, didn't you have an empty apartment? before you had your baby, you were going, "well the crib --" it's like, you're just moving in with vanessa and you're going -- >> yeah, and i have this look of, like, "i haven't finished writing it and we're about to --" and like, we didn't know what it was going to be yet, and he got all that amazing footage, so that's all in the doc along with lots of performance footage and lots of cameos, amazing people like quest and you sort of talking about the show and -- it's really crazy. >> jimmy: truly moving, and he did such a great job. alex -- >> alex horwitz. >> jimmy: alex horwitz. such a great job doing this documentary and you just get
