>> pam :five students sickened at school and sent to the hospital -- two others taken home by parents. all after teachers and staff at pinole valley high school, noticed them acting a bit odd. good evening. i'm pam moore. the school district says, it appears the students ingested the anti- anxiety prescription drug xanax. kron four's philppe djegal is live tonight outside pinole valley high. where police and paramedics responded today. philippe. >> phillipe :pam. it's unclear where the students got the medication from or when they ingested the pills. but by lunchtime -- witnesses say it was clear something was
wrong. the second the west contra costa unified school district says a teacher and staff saw a group of students looking a bit warn down at lunchtime. >> : they called the ambulance and the principal and all of the security guards and then they came and got him. >> phillipe :concerned classmates recount what they saw when one of the five hospitalized students from pinole valley high school was tended to by paramedics. >> : they was checking his vitals and they was like a bunch of police outside my classroom. >> phillipe :school dtrict spokesperson marcus walton says it didn't take long for police to determine the students had ingested xanax. their ages not released. but walton says. >> : it was a cross of variety of grades. >> phillipe :an anti-anxiety prescription medication. one of xanex's listed side effects -- hallucinations. the school district says all
seven students will most likely be suspended and possibly expelled. the student witnessed by classmates being checked out by first-responders -- described as aloof. >> :he looked lost. >> : and, so the adults were aware and did what they were supposed to do in that situation. >> phillipe : the school district says it will be reaching out to parents, asking that they talk to their kids about the dangers of prescription drug abuse. live in pinole, philippe djegal, kron four news. >> pam :there is no time right now if the kids verse students and there is no information from the police on their condition but police are on the scene and there is no indication of an active shooter the metropolitan transportation commission says, the morning commute is starting earlier and earlier as drivers compete for lower tolls, and parking availability. and bart riders compete for a seat on the train. kron four's jeff bush is live tonight at the bay bridge toll plaza with more on this disheartening news.
jeff. what do officials say is causing this new trend? >> jeff :there is only so much space for people to get around the m.t.c. says the traffic load on bay area bridges has gone up about 20% compared to last year. those numbers were taken between four and five a.m. the m.t.c. says more people on the roadearliera lot of people trying to get ahead of the rushbut, the rush is starting earlier than it was this time last year. >> : it is amazing, across the boardall seven of the state owned toll bridges had significant increases in traffic this year compared to 2014. >> : the bay bridge, between four o=clock and five o=clock in the morning is almost at half capacity. it's just about 50% full between four and five o=clock in the morning.
>> jeff :a noticable factor in all of this is the fact that the toll is four bucks before five and jumps to six from five a.m. to ten a.m. the commission says the simple fact is that there are just more people living in the bay area than last yearbut, the number of parking spaces has remained the same. the simple conclusionpeople are leaving home earlier so they can get a parking spot in san francisco. bart riders say they have seen an increased competition for parking spaces at the station and competition for seats on the trains. >> todd lewis : the commute has gotten worse. it seems there has been a big increase in the number of people getting onto the bart stations, especially from the east bayprimarily on the earlier trains, which is quite surprising. >> eugene louie : yeah, it's really cut throat. everybody is trying to get a parking space if you canyou just lucked out. jeffthe take away is that more and more people keep moving here and von to get around, no matter how you do it. i'm jeff bush, live at the bay
bridge toll plaza, kron four >> pam : residents along mexico's central coast. are bracing for what forecasters are calling a "potentially catastrophic" category- five hurricane. the u-s national hurricane center says, patricia's maximum sustained winds. have grown to 160- miles an hour. the center says, the big storm is expected to make landfall a a a mazanillo and puerto vallarta. kron four's diane tuazon is in the weather center. she joins us with more on hurricane patricia's path. the end it is traveling in north and direction wind speeds could pick up even more by friday evening but as it travels through from category 5 it will close down quite a bit --coolest down quite a bit
we're going to have cooler temperatures from and low clouds in place as you can see and the low pressure coming in from that her can all move out to california region and that is going to cool things down quite a bit below have more about that in your seven day forecast coming up how >> pam :new tonight at 11. three employees at a grocery store in pittsburg. are stabbed. after police say, they confronted a shoplifter. it happened at the winco foods store. around 8- o'clock tonight. police say. a man stole shaving razors from the shelf. and was confronted by five employees. officers say, a physical altercation ensued. and three of the employees were stabbed. the suspect ran from the scene. and remains at large. police continue to search the area. anyone with information on the suspect is asked to call pittsburg police. new tonight at 11. the man suspected of luring at
least 15- different girls near schools in napa and saint helena. has been identified. since july. there has been 11 - instances where a hispanic man in his 30s or 40s. targeted girls who were walking to or from school. police now say, 29-year-old eduardo calixto of napa. has been identified as the owner of the sedan. described by the victims. >> : he is not under arrest. the >> pam :he also admitted to asking the girls. if they wanted a ride. officers are also asking the public to report any additional incidents. berkeley police are beefing up patrols. and working with local schools, after a recent string of attempted kidnappings. three seperate incidents occurred around willard middle school a month ago and then two additional incidents on sunday, just 6 blocks away from the school on college avenue. the victims have given similar descriptions of the suspect. he is described as a latino man in
his late 20's or early 30's. with dark hair and a scruffy face. police still have been unable to locate the suspect. only on four. kron four's j-r stone sits down with oakland mayor libby scaaf. to talk crime. this comes just one day after a mural for an oakland artist - antonio ramos. is dedicated in his memory. he was killed while painting that mural. doing what he loves.. j-r brings us the story. >>:yesterday we dedicated the mural for him, and he was painting it while he was shot and it was a very poignant day >> j.r. :she did not hold back and we spoke with her about the death of ramos and the ice cream truck driver >>:i cannot celebrate that when instances like this happen
