>> catherine: now at 11. rain. lightning. and cold temperatures hit the bay area. today's storms brought a lot with them - including snow in the sierra. ski resorts are loving it. good evening, i'm catherine heenan. it was a wet day in the bay area. giving drought-stricken california a little break. kron four's diane tuazon joins us now. so - is there any more rain on the way? >> reporter: the couple.

chance of rain showers i'll explain that later. >> catherine: new at 11. it's a photo. that's almost impossible to capture. lightning. striking the south tower of the golden gate bridge this morning. with hundreds of lightning stikes lighting up the bay area. during this mornings downpour. one photographer was able to capture the fascinating moment. >> catherine: in san mateo, a woman escaped injury when a hundred-foot tall redwood tree exploded around her after being hit by lightning. it happened early this morning. there were hundreds of splinters and chunks of the tree scattered across simone nguyen's backyard here on brandywine road, just east of 280. she says she'd just walked into the backyard with her dog - when the sky erupted in a bright red flash. simone says what sounded like an explosion was followed by a rain of wood splinters. >>: i sought him mighty tree and then exploded. i had time to

escape. >> catherine: a neighbor is an art collector - and several of the sculptures in her yard were also damaged. one large splinter went through a window and landed in her bedroom. she says she feels lucky to be alive. >> catherine: as it poured here in the bay area. nearly a foot of snow fell in the sierra. which means that more and more ski resorts are opening earlier than expected. boreal opened this weekend, and had its best opening weekend in more than a decade. several resorts are reporting up to eight inches of snow. in the past 24-hours. it's the second straight monday for fresh snow in the tahoe area. to see when your favorite resort is set to open.just check our website - kron four-dot-com. >> catherine: a hostage situation turned deadly.

san jose police forced to open fire on a man. holding a woman hostage. now two people are dead. others injured. kron four's jeff bush has the latest in the case. >> reporter: swat team officers surrounded the 4000 block of camden avenues on monday afternoon. police were called to the area around 2:30 because a man with a gun took a female victim hostage in the residence and fired several shots during the abduction. >> reporter: several hours after the home was surrouded police say the suspect came out of the house armed with a pistol. police opened fire and killed the suspect on the spot. san jose police say an officer was injured in the incident and was taken to the hospital with non life threatining injuries. there were unconfirmed reports the female victim died during the day but police would not confirm that informationonly saying that she was found in the residence after the suspect

was killed. >> reporter: when officers searched the residence they found a female inside the residence. i'm not at liberty to discuss the condition of the victim at this time but i will get you details as soon as they become available. there was a huge police presence during the standoff and a huge perimeter was set up to keep anyone from getting out. you can see in this video provided by our aerial partners at abc 7 that officers were all over the place and had armored vehicles and were carrying heavy weapons. it is unclear how the victim and the suspect knew each other or if either of them lived in the residence. police say they will give more information about the victim in this case as soon as it becomes available. i'm jeff bush in san jose, kron four news. >> catherine: a san jose man accused of shooting himself and a 9-year-old boy. was in court today. last month. police say 40-year- old eric smith. shot himself in the foot with a hunting rifle at a san jose apartment complex. that same bullet. went through the floor, hitting the sleeping child. smith was arraigned on several felony charges. including being a felon in possession of a gun. the child remains hospitalized - but is expected to recover.

>> catherine: new tonight at 11. two pier 39 store owners are asking for the public's help in identifying two men they say burglarized their stores. it happened around 8 friday morning. at 'antiquities of california' and 'krazy kaps.' this is surveillance video of the suspects leaving with items from both stores. the owner of 'antiquities of california' - says they haven't been burglarized in years. and now fear other nearby stores will be targeted. >> catherine: still

>> catherine: it's been an unlucky day for the california lottery.because of a computer glitch. the problem shut down some of the lottery terminals around the state.meaning people couldn't buy their tickets for the powerball and most other games. only scratch-off tickets were being sold. there was a signal loss - that prevented the connection to the system that generates the numbers. about 350 of 22-thousand stores were affected.some as long as five hours. the problem was fixed by late afternoon. >> catherine: still ahead -- since an injured sacramento teenager can't get to any school celebrations these days. his classmates brought some of the fun to his home. and some would say it's about time. president obama launches his own facebook page. how he used it today.
