(pam) turning now to storm
lawrence what kind of damage can a storm of this magnitude do? lawrence karnow: it was another beautiful day with sunny skies all the way to the coast. highs today soared into the 80s inland with sunny 70s at the coast. hurricane florence continues to look like a very dangerous storm. she is currently a category 4 storm and headed directly toward the east coast. tropical storm olivia is now approaching the hawaiin islands. it will bring heavy rain and gusty winds tonight as it moves through. on the satellite image we an area of low pressure to the north. that system will drop into the bay area as early as tomorrow. it will bring more clouds and much cooler temperatures. highs will be running as much as 5 to 15 degrees below normal with partly cloudy skies tomorrow. highs wil be in the low to mid 70s inland with 60s and 70s around the bay and 50s and 60s at the coast. temperatures will warm slightly into and return to normal next week.

(pam) our grant lodes has been tracking the progress firefighters are making... and there is good news tonight .... for people who were forced to evacuate. (grant) as of a as of
a little earlier this evening...all evacuation orders were lifted for the irving fire...burning in western marin near lagunitis and samuel p taylor state park. this is video from last night when there was no containment and there was concern this could spread to homes. within the hour...marin fire tweeted out that containment is up to 45 percent. the fire has burned at least 115 acres....but no structures damaged. but again, people are back home...though some of them are without power because of the fire. all roads are back open. the cause is being investigated. and the snell fire, burning in napa county...is now 60 percent contained...aft er burning nearly 25-hundred acres since it started on saturday. this is video from over the weekend....when there were towering flames. all evacuation orders and road closures have also been lifted in that area...jsut south-east of middletown.
there are still 11-hundred people working the fire...and cal fire does not expect this one to grow in size. investigators are working to determine what started this fire. new at 8. the alameda county sheriff says.... they arrested an east bay man for trying to stab a local republican congressional candidate.(ken) it happened sunday at the castro valley fall festival where the candidate had a booth to meet voters. kron 4's gabe slate spoke with rudy peters about the attack. sound from - rudy peters - republican running for the 15th congressional district of californiai have not had an issue my wife warned me the country is so divided we need to be careful and nothing has happened until now until now sunday at 330pm the alameda county sheriff's office says according to witnesses rudy peters, who is running for the 15th congressional district of california, was almost stabbed at the castro valley fall festival where he had a booth set up meeting voters, by this man farzad fazeli, a 35-year- old castro valley resident. peters says the attacker first walked by their booth yelling

(pam) in the east bay -- an early morning fire at a homeless encampment in oakland ... is now under investigation. authorities say, these encampment fires are a re- curring problem. in fact, one city leader says, he believes the fires are being set intentionally. at todays' fire scene... oakland public works crews were cleaning up what was left at the homeless camp site .... at a city park on east- 12th street. it is one of several homeless camp sites in councilmember noel gallo's district. he says, he often hears that confrontations inside camps ... lead to the camps being burned down. "if you go down east 12th a little further you're going to see that other encampment got burned. you will see there was a fire there. these are individuals, the way they get back at you, they set the place on fire">(pam) oakland police say, a
deceased person was found near the burned encampment on east 12th street. however, investigators say, that person's death does not appear to be related to the fire, but more likely a result of being homeless. and new at 8. an oakland city council member is living in a tiny house for the rest of the week to bring awareness to the homelessness crisis in the city. the tiny house was built by laney college students and will soon be lived in by students who attend the school who do not have a place that they call home. kron4's michelle kingston was there today when the councilman moved in. (ken) president donald trump honored 9/11 victims today in shanksville that's where united flight 93 crashed in a field, after those on board fought back against the terrorists on board. (ken) the 40 people on that flight learned the other planes had crashed into the twin towers and the pentagon and voted to fight the hijackers. they fought for control of the cockpit.... but it went down into a pennyslvania field. investigators later learned the hijackers intended to target the u-s capitol or the white house. at the ceremony: the president said "america will never forget what your loved ones did for all of us." (pam) the anniversary of the tragedy has turned into a day of giving back across the country. kron 4's maureen kelly was at pier 35 in san francisco, where more than a thousand volunteers turned out to pay their respects on this september 11th... by helping others... including congresswoman nancy pelosi. teams of people packed up healthy meals... that will go to those in need. officials are teaming up with uber... to bring more awareness to safety ... when it comes to rideshares. they say, riders should follow specific steps to stay safe. (ken) uber went so far as to say, many of the issues are 100- percent preventable. kron 4's dan kerman has more on what riders should be aware of. it's estimated there are over 170-thousand rideshare trips on a typical workday in san francisco alone... and the recent arrest of the so-called rideshare rapist, who has been accused of raping 4 women while posing as their rideshare driver... has raised the stakes on keeping riders safe.sot george gascon/san francisco district

(ken) new data shows nearly 20 percent of marijuana products tested in california for potency and purity have failed. the data was provided to the associated press. california started testing on july 1-st. in the first two months...11-thousand samples were checked. and almost 2-thousand failed. in some cases..the product must be destroyed. but many involve labeling issues that can be corrected. testing has been especially tough on infused cookies and candies, about one-third have failed. some in the marijuana industry say the standards are too strict and that technical glitches have contributed to the high failure rate. the state is considering revamping testing rules.

an oregon man has been cleared of a sexual abuse conviction and a 50-year sentence. and the key to his freedom.... was a dog. 42-year-old joshua horner's accuser said, he shot and killed a dog in front of her.. to keep her quiet. but that dog was found alive and well. the oregon innocence project re-investigated the case... leading the court to find, there was not enough evidence to charge and convict horner. (ken) a gas station store clerk collapses - but instead of helping him, police say two teens helped themselves... by stealing from the store. police now want to find the young thieves who left that clerk for dead. steve mc- carron reports. angela sharapova/store manager "we can't believe that this happened."it disgusts angela
sharapova to watch this surveillance footage of the confrontation inside her store saturday night that ended with her employee in the hospital. auburn police say the clerk tried to charge a man for a couple of pepperoni sticks that two teens were eating near the counter. they got into an argument. then one of the teens hands the clerk a dollar 'causing him to get upset. you see the clerk walk around the counter to confront the teens. angela sharapova/store manager"he was saying 'this is wrong and you have to pay for it.' and at this point, he stepped back to behind the counter and that's instead of calling for help police say one of the teens took the dollar back from the clerk then bolted with the other two. the teens return a couple of times to steal cigarettes and $178 from the cash register. angela sharapova/store manager"their actions could cost somebody their life. what they should have done is just call 9-1-1." several minutes passed before another customer comes in to find the clerk on the ground. performing c-p-r as another customer calls for help. angela sharapova/store manager "it just breaks our hearts. now this guy is fighting for his life." (pam) keeping children safe while they are heading to and from school... is a big worry for parents. and a newly released survey confirms that with some alarming statistics for schools here in the bay area. (ken) one school in particular in dublin... scored a low grade when it comes to traffic and safety. kron's four's terisa estacio breaks down the report and shows us where the worst offenders are. gabrielle mock, parent. i saw a parent once drive on the wrong side of the road to drop off their child. meredith bright, parent. it is scary sometimes. parents talking to me about the conditions they often see while walking their
children to and from j.m. amador elementary school in dublin. zendrive recently did a study on 125 thousand schools nationwide.. delivering an f grade to amador. they say they analyze miles driving in and around schools to give them a safety snapshot. in alameda county, there were several schools that did not fair well at all, according to zendrive's metrics, the worst drivers near schools included livermroe valley charter, treeview elementary in harywa, and ruus elementary in hayward. as for amador, the school district spokesperson says they work deligently with dublin police to improve on safety. chip dehnert, dublin unified school district. we give out notices, we work hard on making matters safe for our kids, but speak up if you see something. lopez has the details. but we want to warn you ... some may find this video to be disturbing. according to the lapd it was supposed to be a routine investigative stop. it was anything but this is body cam video from the female officer who was shot. the lapd froze the video after the shots were fired. this is lapd dash cam video that shows the suspect richard mendoza a known gang member, opening fire on the female officer and then firing at her partner who is hiding behind the car. the body cam video shows her partner rushing around the car firing at mendoza hitting him several times. mendoza died later that night. the female officer was hit in the leg. the body cam from the female officer mainly shows the top of mendoza's head. but it is her partner's body cam that clearly shows inside the car. mendoza has his handgun hidden in the console where neither officer could see it. the video is frozen. the red circle to show you where the gun was hidden and then mendoza comes out firing. how did the officers not see the handgun. did they lose sight of mendoza's hands at any time. those are questions that the lapd said are being investigated and they will not discuss it. they won't even discuss if the
female officer is back on duty only that she has recovering and because they say she is a victim of a crime they are not releasing any information at all only that this is the 12th edited video of a officer involved shooting that they've released says the new policy went into effect. and she got a call from the real uber driver. frightened she told the driver everything was okay and hung up. < liz: my heart sank. because i knew i was in the wrong car, i have no idea who this guy is, i'm in trouble.liz: and i thought well if he's gonna kidnap me, what... you know... rape? kill me? anything! all these thoughts are going in my head. and you freeze. and i froze.>(ken) suarez did not call police out of fear. then her flash went off when she tried taking a picture of the driver. she says he started cursing and demanding her wallet and phone. that's when she jumped out of the car. she suffered a head injury fractured wrist and broken ankle. what's more...suarez says police weren't helpul at first. and she says there were several errors in the police report of her incident...inclu ding no mention anywhere of kidnapping. the crime remains unsolved while elizabeth endures a lengthy recovery. is accused of pulling a scam - - while yanking on heart- strings. the suspect allegedly stole 11-thousand dollars worth of items, claiming to be a pregnant widow to collect for firefighters.(pam) she is being accused of posing as the wife of a fictitious cal- fire firefighter on facebook. her name is ashley bemis. residents in san clemente took notice on facebook and started warning people not to donate. sheriffs deputies confirmed.... bemis pretended to be pregnant, even using a fake baby bump. she even had pregnancy photographs taken. detectives served a search warrant on her apartment and garages. they found at least 11- thousand- dollars in donated items. in sports... jon gruden and derek carr try to explain the raiders' econd half meltdown last night against the rams... and could the a's ride some timely hitting
new at 8. a california principal is furious over what he says are racist comments by students from another school... made toward his students.(ken) but now he's under fire for the way he handled the situation. michele gile (jee-lee) has details. jeff bishop/principal"and honestly, all i'm doing is i'm taking the cover and lifting it up and the hell with anyone that doesn't like that."after weekend of death threats and hate mail, santa ana's high school principal, jeff bishop, stands behind comments he made after friday's football game at aliso viejo. bishop's claims of racism directed at his students, that many people dispute, happened on a night where aliso niguel high chose a red, white and blue theme. jeff bishop/principal"and when you have band members and a girl that had a coke thrown at her, and this is the comment that i knew i had to remain silent no more. when they said, as one of our students was driving out of the parking lot... again, a small number of kids, i want to make that clear, all right? when they said, 'it's not a great day to be a mexican now is it?' when i heard that, oh hell no." due to the proximity to
september 11th, aliso niguel's principal says the students decided to have a patriotic theme.she acknowledge in a statement that a few of the signs in the stands with the words trump and obama were political and were taken down. but the santa ana unified superintendent called others offensive and insensitive. quote: "the signs read 'make america great,' 'make america white,' 'build that wall' to name just a few." aliso niguel students chanting usa, usa. were asked by the principal to stop.natsot/mos"the signs, of course, that was racist. the chanting. we know you are in the usa, yeah, we know you're in the usa, you don't have to chant that. that was just uncalled for." natsot/mos"i saw one that said 'build a wall,' yes. and that one was like wow, you wouldn't expect that." after both principals talked at the game, the santa ana principal posted his concerns on facebook, which caused a social media storm. deni christenen, aliso niguel's principal, said this: quote: 'i'm deeply saddened that anyone could categorize our students or community as racist and i have made that very clear. we have nothing but respect for santa ana high

(pam) if you are the parent of a toddler, it might be time to start engaging them in conversation.(ken) according to a new study... it will help their language skills and boost their i-q. researchers tested two groups of kids aged 18 months to two- years-old. one group heard words from adults... while the other group actually had
