(catherine) actually, it's an old school approach to fighting crime. as kron four's terisa estacio reports, a new study shows that foot patrols are really helping crack down on

crime. deputy chief ann mannix, sfpd. a study came out a few days ago, showing that we have had a significant drop in car break ins... san francisco police officer deputy chief ann mannix on how foot patrols have drammatically made an impact on the streets of san francisco. mannix. we put more in uniforms. 16.9 percent decline in larceny theft... a 19.1 perecent reduction in assaults... it all goes back to september of 2017. that is when the sfpd reassigned approximately 70 officers from plainclothes and special assignment to city wide uniformed foot patrol beats. deputy chief ann mannix, sfpd. "it has had widespread benefits. and now that the city is decked out iholiday gear, the sfpd plans to pay particular attention to putting foot patrols in areas such as union square to help keep everyone safe. mannix. yes. we are increasing in commercial cooridor

(catherine) federal officials are starting to clean up toxic waste after the devastating camp fire in butte county.. stephanie lin has the story... nat sound:e-p-a crews, ankle deep in debris...t sound: shovel through remains of a once proud home that stood right here. steve calanog:"we are here with one of the teams, beginning the assessment of a destroyed residential dwelling."the beginning of a six month clean-up, starting in the lower pentz neighborhood south of paradise.stephanie lin:"the epa expects to comb through hundreds of homes over the

next few weeks, and clean hazardous materials from 15,000 homes by the time clean-up is over."steve calanog:"some of the workers are donning the white suits and the respiratory protection we call personal protective equipment. it's to mitigate and minimize repeated exposure to a wide variety of chemicals."phase one of the clean-up focuses on the removal of toxic waste.steve calanog:"every household has a wide variety of products that can present a threat to human health and the environment if released, and we need to collect them in advance of the next phase."phase two will capture remaining fire debris. that's expected to start next month.steve calanog:"we are tracking where we are so we don't duplicate efforts."the e-p-a will stay in this neighborhood for a few more days before moving to other areas south and west of paradise.all collected debris will be sent to a nearby staging area.steve calanog:"it will be properly treated and disposed."a lengthy but necessary step on the road to rebuild paradise.

has filed for bankruptcy protection. the sports organization is trying to stop some of the repercussions it's facing in the wake of team doctor larry nassar's convictions. the former team physician is currently in prison for sexually abusing girls and young women. more than 150 testified against him in court. survivors of nassar have filed 100 lawsuits against the sports organization. u-s-a gymnastics estimates that it could cost between 75-million and 100-million dollars to settle those lawsuits. the chair of the u-s-a gymnastics board says the board decided to let a bankruptcy court decide the claims and expedite the process. the board is also hoping the court can hold off the u-s olympic committee. the committee wants to strip u-s-a gymnastics of its status as the national governing body. under the bankruptcy filing-- all "pending actions" against the governing body are on hold.

even fruitcake. space x launched the shipment today from cape canaveral in florida. it could arrive on saturday. the delivery will also include 40 mice and 36 thousand worms for aging and muscle studies. the launch would have happened sooner - but was delayed due to moldy mice food. (ken) before democratic governors in wisconsin and michigan take over in january... the republican legislatures in those states are trying to strip executive authority from those posts.
