(catherine) i'm catherine heenan -- in for ken wayne. the national hurricane center says that dorian has strengthened againtonight... it's becoming an extremely dangerous hurricane. chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is tracking dorian from our
florida is under a state of emergency. ' dorian' could be the strongest hurricane to hit the state's east coast in three decades.. (catherine) airports in orlando and daytona beach announced todaythat they're cancing commerical flights early monday morning. nadia romero is in west palm beach with the latest.
(catherine) some of the same workers went to puerto rico after hurricane maria in 2017. we are also learning tonight -- two firefighters from melo park are already in florida. they are part of an incident support team that coordinates with local and state responders... and manages federal resources. (pam) president trump will be monitoring hurricane dorian from camp david this weekend. earlier today at the white house ... the president and vice- president were briefed on the storm .. sunday he is set to meet with fema officials.. today -- the president declared a
number of private properties in that state, including his mar-a-lago resort in palm beach ... right now it is projected to be directly in the path of dorian. (catherine) a big story tonight -- a california state appeals court has thrown out the only conviction against the man accused of shooting and killing a woman on san francisco's pier 14. ájose garcia-zarateá was acquitted of murder in the
20-15 killing of ákate steinle.á he's been in custody facing a gun charge-- but the court overturned that conviction today because the judge failed to instruct the jury on one of his defenses. garcia-zarate was in the country illegally-- and had been deported five times before killing steinle. he claims he picked up the gun that was wrapped in a t- shirt-- and fired it accidentally. ((catherine/fsc)) late tonight...the san francisco police officer's association released a statement... saying... "this is yet another disgusting injustice perpetrated by a broken criminal justice system - that's more intent on re-harming the victims of crime and their families than holding violent offenders accountable."((fsc)) "it seems our justice system is intent on exploiting any loophole, no matter how minute, to coddle criminals and re-victimize crime victims and our communities." (pam) a big story we are following tonight -- sirhan sirhan, the man who
assassinated senator robert f. kennedy.. was reportedly stabbed in a california state prison today. the attack reportedly happened in one of the prison yards this afternoon. when correctional officers correctional when correctional officers responded, they found sirhan with stab wounds. the attack was so severe he was removed from the prison for treatment. sirhan is currently in the hospital in stable condition. the suspect in the assault has been placed in isolation. (catherine) police on the peninsula are looking for a group of robbers who stole thousands of dollarsworth of electronics from an apple store. this video of the brazen theft last night has been making the rounds on social media. burlingame police say the thieves made off with more than 50-thousand dollars in merchandise. kron4's dan thorn is live in burlingame tonight. he joins us with more ....dan? these thefts
(pam) we now have video of a credit union robbery in vacaville. the robbery happened yesterday afternoon ... at the golden one credit union. officers say -- the man you see in the video, gave a teller a note demanding money... got the cash and walked out. the suspect is described as a man in his 20's or 30's. if you recognize him -- you're asked to call vacaville police. (pam) a south bay man is in custody tonight on several charges.... including sexual assault, kidnapping, robbery and lewd acts. san jose police arrested áluis gomezá yesterday at his home
in morgan hill. detectives say -- between june 28th and august 29th of this year -- gomez picked up prostitutes in san jose, drove them to a secluded parking lot , and assaulted them. in one case -- investigators say -- gomez held out a gun. (pam) police say they have arrested 10 people in connection to dozens of commercial burglaries. (catherine) the city of oakland can move forward with building a new ballpark for the oakland a's.(pam) state lawmakers passed two bills today.. designed to create alternative means for oakland to start development. the a's want to build their ballpark ... on land that is part of the port of oakland near jack london square. the site no longer operates as a marine terminal. the bills passed today would allow the city of oakland to form what's called - an infrastructure financing district. this creates a financing plan to spend unspecified tax dollars ... on infrastructure projects related to the ballpark. skaggsá died by choking on vomit after using drugs and alcohol. a medical examiner's office in texas says -- they found the sseveral opioids including fentanyl and oxycodone in skagg's system. his death has been ruled an accident. the 27-year old baseball player was found dead at a hilton hotel in texas july first. (pam) twitter's c-e-o is fighting to take back control of his own account ... after it was hacked. several racist and anti-semitic tweets were sent from jack dorsey's account today. the posts have since been deleted. the company tweeted... it is investigating matter. last year, twitter told congress.. that dorsey had a two- factor authentication for his personal twitter and email accounts. (catherine) there's a deal in sacramento tonight aimed at controlling rent prices. governor newsom's office says the deal would cap annual rent increases at five percent, plus inflation, with a 10 percent maximum. the final agreement makes changes to a bill by democratic assemblyman ádavid chiu.á he'd talked about a sseven percent - plus inflation - increase. he faced resistance from the real estate and development indusitries. the cap would not apply to apartments built within the last 15 years, and the caps would sunset in 20-30.
