3:00 pm
right now. we begin with breaking news at three. scary moments on the campaign trail for a presidential candidate hillary clinton. secret service rushing to her side during a rally right here in las vegas. good afternoon. i'm marie mortera. >> i'm jim snyder in for reed today. this all went down when some protesters got a little too close to clinton trying to get up on stage. news 3's jeff gillan is live outside the hall where she was speaking. so you were there. walk us through the gone too far. >> reporter: actually, jim, good afternoon. actually, they let me stay so i am inside the hall right now. they've covered many of these things and it's not unusual to see protesters at an event. what is unusual is to see the secret service take the stage to make sure the candidate is protected. here's what happened.
3:01 pm
keep talking. >> reporter: so you are looking at act sfrisz the group direct action everywhere. they were calling on clinton to, in the group's words, support animals right to be free from harm. the group was calling on mrs. clinton to take a stronger position on animal rights. the group is against the raising and killing of animals for food. now let's put this into context. this was not the entire afternoon this afternoon. this moment the video of course that you just saw is quickly. most of the press was actually -- we were behind a huge american flag. we never even saw this thing. what the crowd heard today, by the way, was very pro-union, pro-jobs speech from clinton. she was giving this crowd really a lot of red meat. democratic red meat today. calling for a massive jobs plan to rebuild america's infrastructure. and you also heard the line she said last week at the democratic
3:02 pm
she said that donald trump is unfit to be president. we will have much more on clinton's afternoon here coming up at five and six. life in las vegas, jeff gillan, back to you. >> marie: thank you. this is not the first time a rally in las vegas has been interrupted. a candidates rally. you will recall moments during a donald trump rally at june in treasure island. police arresting michael sandford after they say he could kill trump. >> federal agents say sandford practiced shooting at a gun range the day before trump's appearance. here is a better look at him. he's been in custody since his arrest with a trial scheduled for later this month. president obama paid a visit to the pentagon today to talk about the fight against isis. >> isil has not had a major, successful offensive operation in either syria or iraq in a full year.
3:03 pm
going keep losing. and their message to followers? they're increasingly acknowledging they may lose mosul and raqqa. they are right. they will lose them. >> jim: this is the third time president obama has gone to the pentagon for an isis meeting. military leaders are working with iraqi forces to try to take the city of mosul away from the terror group. the u.s. announced a kwm to go after isis in the libyan cit o purple heart. this was much easier. >> he's been picking fights that make no sense to anybody. >> marie: you first heard from donald trump pushing along in his campaign through a week of controversy. many say his feuds with military families and fellow republicans are distracting from the issues. coming up on "news 3 live at 3:30," we'll take a closer look at how donald trump can get his campaign back on track. >> jim: we want to know what
3:04 pm

3:05 pm
quite awhile. they say this could be the largest bust in state history. and here are the two suspects photos on your screen. sylvester and javier are each facing felony counts for training these birds for illegal fighting. as a county resident you are allowed to have up to three birds if you want to have eggs. metro animal cruelty detectives, like i said, found 550 those two homes. the two brothers who live next to each other also found evidence of breeding, tethers, boxing gloves along with other training items. police have been working together to get care through the animal foundation who provided a vet and 20 other people to assist in getting the birds off their property. >> yesterday a veterinarian was actually called into the animal foundation, evaluated each bird as the animal was brought in and at that time she makes
3:06 pm
determines if they have any medical issues, any injuries that would require them to be euthanized. >> reporter: we're going go into the animal foundation and talk to the folks over there about the conditions of these birds. see what's going to happen to them in the future. but metro is hoping that they will eventually get new homes. reporting live i'm christy wilcox, news 3. back to you. >> marie: that is the hope there. thank you so much. let's talk about the weather now. we had quite the show on the las vegas strip. if you no ticket needed. >> jim: we're talking about that amazing lightning show last night. take a look if you missed it. our cameras across the hotel towers downtown and on the strip capture these images as storms moved through last night. maybe woke you up. the show didn't last all that long but it sure was visible. >> marie: even made national news. so many people sharing these images a across the country. this force of nature did cause damage to a henderson home.

3:08 pm
tomorrow morning. we're going to be hard pressed to get thunderstorms like we had last night. but there's still a chance. we have an unstable atmosphere. it's very juicy. so we could pick up some thunderstorms overnight. even some wrap around moisture tomorrow afternoon ft you can see how widespread the watch areas are and we do have a very enhanced monsoonal flow. the action came up from the southeast as you can see. let's close in and see what's going on in the valley now. no north central valley and they are moving rapidly up to the northwest. up ann road and that ways. we'll talk about the prospects for more rain and when we'll finally get out of this moist, humid pattern up ahead. back to the desk. >> marie: new at three, a live look at mccarran airport where a new international flight is getting ready to take off. hainan airlines will manage the first nonstop flight between las vegas and china.

3:18 pm
if she was able, i'm sure she has an amazing shot. we should have strapped a go pro on her shoulder. then again we have to give these volunteers a little time to themselves right. >> jim: they're doing a nice job so far. around here we've been talking about rain falling in parts of town. of course we want to know if we're up for heavy stuff. >> marie: jerry brown you have been saying it's kind of a seattle kind of day. you are a washington state native would you agree. >> jim: yep. >> jerry: we still have the potential for a thunderstorm. but we may have seen the that nice lightning show and we got a pretty good dousing in parts of the valley. especially the southeast. let's look at our camera from aliante. this at the casino there. this is just a study in dreariness as we go through the day. certain redundancy here as you can see just clouds and more clouds and more clouds. if you squint there you can see some shower activity going on. now and then. look at this. half-inch of rain in the northeast valley.
3:19 pm
83 degrees up there. 57 percent the relative humidity. the dew point is at 67. obviously a very juicy atmosphere. down in henderson's anthem, 82 degrees. .1500 inch of rainfall. i heard some of that pitter patter on my roof. north east winds at nine miles an hour. here at our studios we had .0582 here in downtown las vegas. 83 sunrise manor. the upper 70s. summerlin. centennial in at 80 degrees. regionally 82 up in indian springs. amazing temperatures for august. 85 down at the marina. 94, excuse me, 95 in pahrump. just updated. a little warmer, 98 down in laughlin. and you can see the humidity values here in the valley way, way elevated as is evident by
3:20 pm
the low 73. our normal is 104 and 81. we're two and two for above and below normal. so far unofficially .03 at mccarran which is officially 83 for las vegas. it's 90 in tonopah. 76 in l.a. there's the widespread monsoonal action. i showed you the flash-flood watches all over the place. including our viewing area. the moisture moving up now from the southeast. you can see most of way up toward lincoln county. we've had some shower activity as opposed to thunderstorm activity in the north central valley. now you can see it is starting to move out of the valley and up the 95. so looks like we're in for a little dry period now. as you can see overnight lows going to be way below normal. down and well into the 70s many areas. look at that. upper 40s on the mountain. highs tomorrow? we'll rebound. should see triple digits. upper 90s to lower triple-digits
3:21 pm
normal 81. isolated thunderstorms definitely a possibility. tomorrow i'm goirlg 101 with a stray thunderstorm possible. especially in the afternoon hours. a little unstable. then a big change. i mean, a jaw dropping change for the weekend. i mean, we're up to 105, 106 with lots of sunshine and much drier air. we stay warm on monday and into tuesday and then cool o by mid-week. so our little monsoonal episode should end tomorrow. >> marie: then back to the desert. >> jerry: it will remind us we're in the desert. >> jim: the rain break is nice. >> marie: may sound like science fiction but a hotel run by robots is reality. >> jim: we're going tell you more about the very unique staff that gives this strange hotel its name. >> dana: good afternoon.
