happened, now the nhp trooper alive , the suspect dead. still questions as we digdeeper into this story. i'm kim wagner . >> officials met to discuss the deadly shooting of a local man of i and nhp trooper during a traffic stop last week. we remember the picture of the badge which saved his life. this happened on boulder highway near us 95. >>reporter: when nevada highway patrol trooper whose badge was believed to have deflected a bullet that was shot at the trooper last week. that trooper still okay.that much was expected. significant new information from the nevada highway patrol about what happened just before, during and after that traffic stop. it happened on boulder highway near desert in road. with dash cam video, of the

pulled over a vehicle that didn't have a registration or expiration sticker on the license plate. several minutes after the traffic stop started, a manin the backseat of a cadillac . the vehicle that was pulled over, that person jumped out of the backseat and ran from the vehicle. left the scene in the dash cam video. that person was armed with a handgun. that person jumped out, the trooper chased him toward the person shot at the trooper at least twice. there was a 19second standoff, a shooting between the two. at some point during the 19 second shooting, the troopers badge was hit . >> the trooper began issuing verbal commands to gibbons. given turned and fired two rounds at the trooper with one of the rounds striking the trooper in the breast badge. >> it actually shattered the outer part of the badge. what you are seeing their is minus the nevada seal and what

opinion. >>reporter: the nhp would not go as far as to say the badge saved the trooper's life but they do say that'spart of this investigation now into exactly what happened and why. they do say the trooper was wearing a bulletproof vest . the two together certainly would have played a role in keeping the trooper safe. the suspect they've felon. one that did not have the legal ability to carry a handgun. drugs were recovered at the scene. there is the belief they say that this person who shot at the trooper was ultimately killed by the nevada highway patrol trooper, this person was taking drugs in a bag and was to drop them off. the completion of a drug deal, that's how it's described right now. i'm reporting from nevada highway patrol, southern command, news 3.

instead, he is heading to the mental health court. our denise rosch is all over this developing story. she joins us from the regional justice center. denise, khalil black actually apologized during the sentencing phase this morning. >>reporter: khalil black says he is feeling much better now that he is on medication. remember, his actions led to an officer involved shooting right on the las vegas p. to probation after pleading guilty to one felony count of resisting arrest. if you get into anymore trouble, he can serve up to four years in prison. this all goes back to january 22. black was waving a gun around in front of the bellagio pointing it at people. a metro officer fired at black but missed however, a four-year-old child was grazed his attorney says black had no criminal history and was suffering a psychotic break .

jail by tomorrow. he served three months of his six-month sentence for raping an unconscious woman outside of a frat house in the year 2005th team. this is at stanford university. he was a star swimmer there and he is being releasedearly. it has to do with the law that gives inmates credit for time served. his sentence, issued by a judge named aron persky was seen as too lenient in the eyes of attention. he will likely return to his hometown which is in ohio where he must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life . >> a space-x rocket exploded at cape canaveral this morning. a spokesperson now says the blast happened during a static fire test. here are the pictures, my goodness. there are two injuries. the rocket - - i'm sorry, there were no injuries. the rocket was destroyed. it was supposed to launch on saturday with a satellite that
