reporting live at unlv, i'm denise rosch for news 3. back to you. >> success we can all rally around. thank you. an update now on breaking news out of new york city. we first told you about this in our 3:00 newscast. a man with a meat cleaver attacked new york city police officers near penn station. it happened in the height of the evening rush hour. one officer was hit in the face. then the man with the cleaver was shot by other officers. he was hit and is in critical tonight, police commissioner bill bra bratton talked about the incident and how the officers are doing now. >> i earlier visited the injured officers at the hospital. one of our officers sustained a significant injury to his face when he was struck by the suspect with a meat cleaver. >> law enforcement officials say the 32-year-old suspect has 15 prior arrests.
the man accused of torching a florida mosque appears before a judge. 32-year-old joseph michael describer, via video feed, into the courtroom here. he's charged with arson and florida's hate crime for the fire at the islamic center of fort piece. he was denied bond and was appointed a public defender. he has been arrested in the past for crimes including armed robbery. he pulled a bb gun from his waistband. officers confronted a group of three people who matched descriptions of the suspects. two ran, pun owled out the bb gun. police thinking it was a real weapon, firing at king. he died in the exchange. the city's police chief showed a picture of what the weapon looked like. >> in addition to this appearance, it also had a laser
underneath the barrel. our officers carry a gun that looks practically identical to this weapon. >> well, the officer brian mason is a nine-year veteran of the police force. he will be given the opportunity to take a leave of absence. counselors will be at king's school if his fellow students need it. the family of sandra bland filed a wrongful death lawsuit. you may remember she's the texas woman arrested during a traffic stop last year. three d hanging in her jail cell. they settled for $1.9 million. the officer who arrested her was fired following an indictment for allegedly lying about the circumstances surrounding this arrest. with the new poll showing a dead heat between them, the presidential candidates had clear messages in mind. hillary clinton's message, i'm back.
