>> announcer: news 3 starts right now. >> reed: we are following breaking news this afternoon. something that's just shocked our nation. two elementary school students and a teacher shot while on a playground at school today. thank you for tuning in at 3:00. i'm reed cowan. >> marie: i'm marie mortera. it happened in townville, south carolina. and right now we know the suspect is in custody. jim snyder is joining us with more on what happened. jim, we understand the suspect is just a teenager. >> reporter: some of the brand-new information just coming in in the past few in fact we -- [ lost audio ] he is in custody. we're also just learning that police are now saying the suspect shot and killed his father near the school first then for some reason they say the teen went to townville elementary school where he shot the two students and a female teacher. the suspect was never inside the school. the victims were shot on the playground. one student and the teacher were taken to the hospital by ambulance. they're expected to be okay.

learned that teacher who was shot in the shoulder, she is already out of the hospital. the other student was airlifted to the hospital. more serious injuries. and was in surgery at last check. after this shooting all the other students were quickly evacuated, taken to a nearby church to meet one her their parents. those parents understandably very shaken today. >> just pray for the families. pray for the kids. i thank god it was i don't know if they're my daughter's classmate ordz somebody i knew. i don't know. just feel so bad. >> reporter: another mother says all the students in her daughter's class huddled inside a bathroom until police arrived. police have said it was an unarmed volunteer firefighter, jamie brock, who just happen to be in the area who took the suspect down and was able to keep him restrained until police

we'll of course stay on top of all the developments as they come in and you can check any time for the latest information. reed? >> reed: thank you for that update. the man accused in sunday's shooting death at a local starbucks was in court this morning. pedro garcia is the person police say shot 41-year-old aleksandr khutsishvili. in court the judge asked if he understood the charges. the most serious being murder and garcia answered yes. d.a. have top priority as it goes forward. >> when this case gets to court i'm going to assign two of my experienced prosecutors to prosecute mr. garcia on the murder charge. >> reed: in court the judge ordered garcia be held without bail. he was appointed a public defender and returns to court on friday for a procedural hearing. >> marie: new at three, those who are against a new nfl stadium being built here in las vegas are making their voices heard. the group nevadans for the common good gathered near

talk about how the deal is a big risk for the public. the group says the $750 million of public funds would be the largest in history. they also say there is an extra risk for taxpayers because of how the deal was proposed. . >> there is a huge risk that room taxes will be insufficient to pay back this bond. room tax revenue fell by almost $200 million or 30 percent between 2007-2,009. the last recession that we had. >> marie: the process is still sandoval to hold a special session. that's expected to happen in just a few weeks. >> reed: amazing technology is putting a quadriplegic rice car driver in henderson back on the road. >> we're talking about sam schmidt. he was told he would never be behind the wheel. but guess what? he is driving a corvette by tilting his head. news 3's kelsey thomas joins us live at exotic racing at las vegas speedway for this

movements. a mouth piece controls the throttle and brake and today sam got the very first nevada driver's license for an autonomous car. he's got big plans for the future. >> i love the blm. i love the roads around lake mead. i got to try to avoid the cops out there for sure. but definitely, you know, taking a blast on a highway is good, but you have so many unforeseen things that can happen. so we'll be safe. but, you know, i also got to drive through the in and out drive-thru. it's been a long time. >> reporter: he won't be heading to the inn out drive-thru any time. he promised 15 people he would give them rides today. of course safety always the top priority. any time sam drives he has to have a passenger with him. but he cannot wait to hit the open road. reporting live from exotic racing, kelsey thomas, news 3. back to you in the studio. >> marie: thank you so much.

of rain today. news 3 is your weather authority. chloe beardsley joins us now. a big question, anymore rain coming. >> chloe: we're seeing some active weather on the radar right now. you can see again another day of cloudy skies. this time we're getting some rain, especially on the west side of town earlier this morning. here's a picture outside. we do have the dark clouds among us. you can see the large area of low pressure continuing to move north and allowing us to see the chances for thunderstorms continue. you can see a look at the radar over the last few hours with storms popping higher elevations but seeing sprinkles in the valley as well. as we get in closer you can see the heart of las vegas has been fairly dry last couple of hours. but we are still expecting to see the chance for light showers throughout the evening. a snapshot of conditions right now. you can see more active weather near boulder city. especially near blue diamond. seen several lightning strikes in that area as well. here is a closer look at that. right along the road there blue diamond road. as we move farther to the east

we're continuing to track the activity throughout the afternoon and throughout the evening. here's a look at the rain totals so far. like i said, hasn't been too impressive. very light showers for the summerlin area. as we look ahead to tomorrow another chance of showers is also anticipated as we make our way into thursday. i'll tell you the odds of seeing that coming up. congress voted to override president obama's 9/11 bill veto. >> the house voted 348-77 to override the president's v saudi arabia for allegedly backing the september 11th attackers. earlier today the senate voted 97-one to override the presidential veto. the lone no vote was senate minority leader harry reid. this marks the first time congress has rejected a veto by president obama since he became president. normally it's humans that try to get into a car right. >> reed: don't tell that to

>> marie: look what a new jersey police dash cam captured. >> reed: let me in! >> marie: this unusual encounter when a deer tried to jump into the driver's seat of a woman's car. 43-year-old ellen sager had struck that deer with her car so he pulled over to the side of the road. she wanted to check on the animal. see opened the door and the deer said you want to help a sister out and take me to the hospital maybe? well they ended up getting the deer out into safety and the patrol after that odd incident. poor thing. i hope it is okay. >> reed: i am from the country. i just have to tell you city friend of mine, it's not a sister. there's horns on that sister. >> marie: i'm sorry. [ cellphone ringing ] it's just another scandal from danny tarkanian. tarkanian was the corporate lawyer for those with an elaborate scam that tricked hundreds of seniors and when a shady tarkanian deal went bust, he refused to pay back $17 million, sticking taxpayers with the bill. why would we ever send danny tarkanian to congress?

>> reed: international prosecutors are stepping in to investigate the downing of that malaysian airliner two years ago. they concluded today it was shot dunn by a russian made missile fired by rebel held territories in eastern ukraine. >> marie: 298 people on board were killed. relatives of the victims say the that a missile launcher was moved from russia to eastern ukraine and that is where that plane was shot down. >> all kinds of proof. telephone taps, even new material, radars. american information, classified information which they're not allowed to bring out in the open here, witnesses, all kinds. >> marie: that's just a father

down -- that plane, rather, that was shot downplayed a significant part in the decision to impose sanctions on russia over the ukraine conflict. >> reed: thousands of baseball fans gathered in miami today for the public funeral of star baseball pitcher jose fernandez. this is taking place in a very sacred spot to many people who come from cuba over the waters and risk their lives to get to the united states. it is a cathedral there. the 24-yol boat he was in crashed to rocks off the coast of miami beach. miami marlins player and coaches were at the procession. they wore white t-shirts with fernandez's image on it. you see all that white. those are all his teammates. a public viewing is going on right now and will go on throughout the rest of the day. it's going to be a long day there in miami. fernandez's family is going to hold a private funeral tomorrow. a major city in canada is night louing any new pit bull

a lot of smoke and you can see the orange glow of the flames there. the latest update by california officials say the fire's only ten percent contained. it's burned more than 2200 acres. in fact, they don't expect full containment until end of the month into october. one home has been destroyed. another one damaged. hundreds of people living in the path of the fire have been told to get out. >> marie: just another reminder, it is dry out there. although here in southern nevada you look up at the sky and go wait a minute l l rain. >> chloe: is there any chance -- we didn't talk about this before so i apologize for throwing a question at you that you may not immediately have the scientific answer, but that fire, what kind of winds have to stir up to get the smoke to where we are? . >> chloe: you have to have strong winds blowing into our area. i can look that up in a second. but let's focus on what's happening on our radar right now. it is a very active scene right behind me. we're certainly expecting some rain. already seeing a bit of it in

here is a look at we get in closer to our area like we mentioned earlier. we have a large area of low pressure that is moving into our region allowing us to see thunderstorms develop. we're tracking it here on news 3. getting in closer we've been dry throughout the last few hours. you can see the motion of the storms moving in a northwestern direction. we're seeing the storms pop up over lake mead and starting to move into our area. most of them drying up. i'm expecting a few to pop-up as we get closer to t n hours. you can see in the heart of las vegas we're dry. like i said, the active weather is really all around us. we're going to show you some of the areas seeing the most rain. you can see spreading all the way up to blue diamond along blue diamond road and extending out to mount charleston some of the heaviest showers and biggest thunderstorms happening right now. actually over in san bernardino county. you can see that activity right there. especially if you are going to be driving. you want to be careful if you see the storms start to develop. we talked about some of the

showers in the henderson area. a newly developed cell within the past ten, 15 minutes. you can see along the 15 and also along the 93 right there. so again if you are on the roadways use caution. we could see heavy rainfall from isolated thunderstorms with that activity that is expected to diminish later on this evening. here's a look at the rain totals so far. you can see really very light rain conditions over in summerlin as well as nellis. evh precipitation has been seen. very light rain as i mentioned in the palo verde high school area near buffalo and lake mead. barely a trace of showers reported there and even lighter rain showers at the school. two vantage points you can see from the area we're looking at cloudy skies pretty much wherever you look with temperatures in the upperies in the southeast and that -- upper 80s. that is not a correct temperature. 62. likely 82. a nice range of tires are cross

90 in sunrise and 88 for southeast right now. as those storms roll in we are going to continue tracking the activity. and as we look ahead to the next few hours, a chance of showers will continue diminishing tonight. we are expecting another chance of showers by tomorrow afternoon. temperatures overnight will be very similar compared to last night. lows or highs tomorrow will be near the seasonal normal. waking up temperatures -- no seeing temperatures later tonight in the 80s. 70 for the overnight low. tomorrow, like i chance of seeing those thunderstorms later in the day. as we look ahead to the next few days, a slight chance of showers continuing into thursday. after that winds pick up as we make our way into the weekend and into next week. not only cooling us down a little bit, gosh, a lot of bit. high temperatures in the low 80s by next week. >> marie: okay. we're ready for it. thank you so much. he was once known as the most hated man in the world. >> marie: now someone is
