how our school district here in town responded to students who decided to stay home out of fear. a local high school student under arrest accused of planning a mass shooting at his school. thank you for joining us. i'm latoya silmon. >> i'm reed cowan. the 15-year-old student went to desert oasis high school in the southwest part of our valley. news 3's sergio avila has >> reporter: school police say they arrested a high school freshman who was plotting a mass shooting at desert oasis high school. >> the student did not appear to have any vendetta against any other students. at this point, it looked like he was acting alone and had made some plans that he was going to do a mass shooting in the near future. >> reporter: police say the plans were thwarted because of an alert parent in arizona who overheard a conversation between her child and another student

shooting. that parent alerted las vegas law enforcement who investigated and found the threat to be real. >> i heard after he got arrested, there's police around the school. everybody saw the police wondering what was going on. >> reporter: this senior says some students saw police on campus last week but didn't know what happened until this morning. still, some students were concerned. >> people believe it. some don't. no one knows if it was true or not. everyone was kind of watching their surroundings. we saw police and so we kind >> reporter: toole's mother, for her, the news was welcomed. >> to hear about something like this, you hope it's not true. if it is true, you hope that kid is in custody or they find out what's going on before something terrible happens. >> reporter: detectives would not tell us if any weapons were found or if the student had researched terrorist organizes. they did say they found enough evidence in the teen's home to

threat to this school. they believe that student was acting alone and did not have any other vendetta towards any other students. sergio avila, news 3. >> thank you. a clown threat at las vegas academy today turns out to be a hoax. there was a heavy police presence outside of las vegas academy this morning after a threat from an instagram account under the name shooter the clown targeted this school over the weekend. the school principal scott walker sent an el school police will have a heightened presence on campus. it's an instance that's becoming a familiar site in clark county leaving a lot of parents concerned. >> shootings at school and what not. at first it's hard to believe and then it's a little scary. >> clown costumes were banned at the school today according to metro. whoever is behind the threats could face misdemeanor harassment charges and jail time. tonight an arrest in connection with the murder of a woman found lying in the street

jail for the crime. police say hudson and the family had been dating. he now faces one count of murder. a woman was found last wednesday near alta and jones. police identified the victim by tattoos on her body. the coroner has not released her name. this was metro's 140th homicide this year. a major story in national news making headlines. jury selection underway in the trial of a former police officer accused of black man. michael slager is accused of killing scott. a bystander recorded this last year. slager was a north charleston police officer when he pulled scott over for a broken tail light. the video showed the officer firing eight times at kos ran away. city officials fired him and he was indicted for murder. firefighters are trying to

it happened west of a gas leak. that caused shortages across the southern part of the united states. italy making international headlines tonight. video from the fire department shows cracks running through the surface of a mountain near the epicenter of yesterday's earthquake. more than 15,000 people were staying in hotels and other temporary accommodations after an earthquake struck regions already rocked by tremor no deaths critical injuries were reported after the 6.6 quake. this video was released by the fire department. it also showed extensive damage to one hilltop town where several buildings were reduced to rubble. a new study suggests that uber and lyft drivers are quietly discriminating against riders based on gender and race. it suggests those in boston were twice as likely to cancel rides

african-american-sounding names than so-called white-sounding names. overall, black riders waited 30% longer for a ride. drivers also took female passengers for longer, more expensive rides. this is based on 15,000 rates. 46 states have asked the department of homeland security for help protecting their elec threats. concerns about on election infrastructure have increased this election cycle, especially after accusations from donald trump. experts say it would be extremely difficult to alter national elections. in nevada, both parties are getting out the vote. the latest polls in nevada put the race between hillary clinton and donald trump at a tie. the head of the clinton campaign

the guy snuck in to a giant panda enclosure at a zoo in china. why would you do that? he jumped into the enclosure to tease the panda. the panda woke up and gripped the man's leg. this turned into panic when the panda wrestled with the man and pulled him to the ground. the man eventually escaped. nobody got hurt. we're understanding it did not notimpress anyone -- tv did not impress anyone. a group of holocaust survivors strutted down the runway for a pageant in israel and honored women who lived through the concentration camps. some have criticized this to cheapening the memory of those who died in the holocaust. others say it's about

contest. the winner 75 years old, who was just two days old when the war started. a 95-year-old world war ii veteran is still trying to figure out how she's going to pay the government back $26,000 after the va said they overpaid her. she admits she made a mistake. news 3's antonio castelan has the followup. >> reporter: it's still a big bess -- mess, the $26,000 debt has not been sure she's not kicked out of her retirement home. >> i didn't think about reporting it. that's why i got in trouble. >> reporter: this 95-year-old world war ii veteran, irene miller, is dealing with a $26,000 problem. she says for the past 12 years, the va was paying her a small amount about $20 extra per point from her dead husband's federal

northern california. for us today, the story has been the winds decreasing this afternoon. however, they were pretty strong earlier this morning. and just this little bit of high clouds drifting in from the southwest. other than that, things are pretty nice outside. but things are going to change up low pressure moving into the region. the wind speeds will pick up tomorrow night into wednesday. so a little bit of a breeze on the way. cool we'll be 46 degrees for indy -- indian springs. low 60s for lake mead. highs tomorrow will actually be a few degrees cooler compared to our temperatures today. 48 on the mountain. that's your high temperature. just want to point that out. 74 degrees for overton. also in the low 70s for pahrump and only in the upper 60s for searchlight, primm and sandy valley in the afternoon. overnight, we'll still see a few clouds out there. temperatures will be about

still above normal for this time of year with those winds diminishing early tomorrow morning. temperatures will be near normal for the next few days as that area of low pressure passes through. winds will be picking up later in the day, 10, 15 miles an hour. as we look ahead to the next few days. a very mild warming trend. but the winds will reach up to 20 miles an hour, po continually gusting up to 20, 30 miles an hour. that warming trend continuing, though, all the way into the weekend and tha this every single year, so remember, fall back -- i almost said spring forward. fall back. set your clocks back on sunday. so you don't have to be late for work. >> and you get an extra hour. >> and you got to see my kids tonight. >> they were so great. i didn't recognize one of the skeletons.
