7:38 am
in elderly patients, number one, and number two there'e' an age-related decline in your immunity as you get older soo now we have two studies that are hypothesis-generating. not definitively saying they do reduce the effect i wasness but it raised the possibility that it can reduce the response to the vaccine which could translate into more respiratory illness. >> this puts people in a pickle. you mentioned if you're older you're more susceptible to flu, more likely to die of the flu and if you're on statins the flu hot is not effective, what am i supposed to do? >> a really important bottom line. given the fact this is the first study that has even looked at this the there's absolutely no formal recommendation that if you are take aggrastatin you should forgo the flu shot, and if you are planning on getting the flu shot that you should stop the statin, nobody is saying that. >> there's a high-dose flu shot. >> and this is incredibly important, approved last year there's a high-dose flu vaccine which is roughly four times as strong as standard dose.

7:40 am
it really depends on the individual. if you want to do a low-fat diet, great, that's going to work for you. if you want to do a high-fat low carb diet that's probably going to work for you also as long as you're including exercise, physical activity and all those other things and you stick with it. >> justtith the bottom line, i i you say i'm going to gon a diet, should do low carb or low-w-t. >> seems like the low carb wowos better better. >> the low-carb works better over the low-fat b any diet wi work as long as you stick with it. that's really take yoem. >> dr. natally azar, thank you so much. appreciate it. coming up, carson helps your kids cope with the weekend of trick-or-treating and the big time change. >> trick or treat. >> and an hour selling 18 homes? easy. building them all in four and a halmonths? now that was a leap. i was calling in every favor i could, to track down enough lumber to get the job done. and i knew i could rely on american express

this is an nbc news special report. here's matt lour and savannah guthrie. >> good morning everyone. nbc news has learned the white house is about to announce a shift to the u.s. military strategy in iraq and syria. >> we understand this will mean more troops involved on the ground in that region. let's bring in richard angle. richard, good morning. tell us about this change and it sounds like it's an acknowledgment what we've been doing in syria and iraq is not working. >> reporter: the white house is calling this a shift and we're expected to hear from the white house shortly making this announcement. others, however, will call it a significant change. first of all, it involves sending a small number of americans special operations forces into syria. that means american boots on the ground in syria working with local partners.
9:14 am
in the past the u.s. has only been advising and assisting from afar mostly through air strikes. more fighter jets will be sent here to turkey conducting more air strikes against isis. a a-10s are already here and a-15s are on the way. action will be placed in northern iraq to assist this campaign against isis. when you look at it altogether, there are three significant announcements, all of them involve deeper u.s. military engagement on the war on isis. >> thank you for that. stand by there. >> let's go to nbc's nick. what are they saying at the
9:15 am
pentagon? >> matt, after more than a year of yearly 8,000 air strikes against enemy forces in both iraq and syria, the best that senior military officials can say is that the fight there against isis is at a stalemate. the overall plan is just not working. training and equipping iraqi forces, syria rebels has not proven to be a breaking point. they need a game changer. they're going to be far more aggressive in terms of the special forces operations on the ground. military officials will tell you you cannot win a war with air strikes alone. you need some boots on the ground. the white house says these are not boots on the ground, this is not a change but in fact, it is a change for a more aggressive strategy and effort to defeat and destroy isis which afterall is president obama's goal. >> before you go, i want to go over these numbers again. richard angle is saying not to
9:16 am
these are special operations forces, will they be fighting alongside serian rebel groups? >> that is still unclear. they will indeed be fighting along with kurds as they did in iraq just a little more than a week ago in which the army maeser sergeant was killed. not clear they will be fighting side by side with the serian rebel groups. there's still a lot of gray area and doubts about exactly who you may be fighting with when you're on the ground in syria unless, of course, it's the serian kurds. >> all right, thank you. >> let's go to the white house now. kristin welker is live there. this president has not wanted to be more involved in these conflicts finds himself once again sending more troops into these dangerous areas. >> reporter: and that is the key point here. the white house trying to down play this announcement. we do not anticipate we'll hear
9:17 am
his press secretary will address the media at 12:30 today. this is a shift in policy for a president who wanted to ramp down the wars in iraq and afghanistan and were called just a few weeks ago president obama said he was going to leave a larger troop presence in afghanistan and now for the first time troops in syria. we'll hear more. we're announcing the white house plans say there's going to be an enhancement and shift in strategy that will involve more

>> we're going to be hearing jeb bush was a very strong governor, probably the strongest governor in the history of the state of florida. he was a young guy and i think there were some folks in the legislature that thought they might be able to run over him. that didn't happen. one tax cut wasn't enough- he had to do more. it wasn't enough to have 15,000 kids with school choice in florida, he wanted to have 100,000 kids. if he didn't like a project, it was going to be vetoed. it didn't matter if you were a republican. it didn't matter if you were his best friend. he said: 'this is where we're going, this is how we're going to reform state government...' every politician comes in talking about making change, and generally there's not much change. but governor bush made a lot of changes. he got the nickname veto corleone. if he saw something in the budget that he thought violated his conservative principles, you could guarantee it was gonna get whacked. he vetoed a bunch of my stuff and i was the senate president. the message to washington, d.c., is 'get ready...' because there will be change.
