breaking... two people are behind bars this morning. police think they're connected to a deadly shooting outside a 24 hour fitness near rainbow and alta. we were on the scene as this story was happening on good morning las vegas last week. authorities say 27-year-old kyle staats and 19-year-old megan hippie are facing several charges...including murder. police say they may be responsible for shooting 42-year-old neil brian gandler just after 1 a.m. on december 29th outside the 24 hour fitness. a nevada deputy is recovering from a gunshot wound....after he responed to domestic violience saturday night in storey county. when he got there...authorities say "charles stutts".. opened fire.. hitting the deputy and one the officer shot back and stutts gave up. stutts is injured ...but is okay....he's been booked in charges. the deputy and by stander are also doing fine. dinner(3-split-screen)vo democratic presidential candidates are ramping up their efforts to win nevada's

democratic caucuses. today, senator harry reid will preview the "first in the west caucus dinner" where all those candidates will go head to head and debate. the silver state will be the first state in the west and the third state in the country to make it's voice heard in the democratic presidential primary senator reid played a critical role in pushing nevada to the front of the line in the last two elections. on wednesday...democrati c hopefuls hillary clinton...martin o'malley and bernie sanders will debate at the m-g-m. tickets are required for the event and you can buy them online from the nevada state democratic party. the caucus is coming up on february 20th. after an uproar over new rates for solar power customers...nevada energy regulators may be reconsidering their decision. the changes were set to take effect on january first would raise the base service charge for southern nevada solar customers by a little over 5- dollars a month. from 12-75 to 17-90. the new rules also reduce the amount the n-v- energy will pay to buy power back from rooftop solar panels.
5:28 am
critics say there wasn't enoughw arning about the scope of the rate structure...some solar power companies say they will go out of business with the new rule. we've been getting a lot of comments on facebook from viewers who are critical of the new rule... take a look... people calling n-v energy a them to the mafia. some people saying these law changes are disgusting. the majority of comments seem to be against these changes. it's all cleared up now...but just last night getting out of vegas looked more like this. it was a major headache for holiday travelers just trying to get home after the long holiday weekend. we hit the roads yesterday to see just how bad it was when hundreds of thousands of people started to leave las vegas. for a few hours in the eventing it was bumper to bumper...cars were going only 5 or 10 miles per hour. this was all about 8 miles from
5:29 am
the california border. some people took a break to shop while the traffic died down...while others decided to just wait it out. le: "the traffic is killing us but the new year has been great" le: "we just wanna go home. that's all we wanna do." all that traffic did clear up by about 8 pm last night. tech junkies...c-e-o's and industry leaders are flocking to the strip for the consumer electronics show this week. yes, there will be plenty of cool new products...but the giant technology convention is great for our city's ecnonmy. it brings thousands of visitors at a normally slow time for tourists. january is typically one of the slowest times of year here in vegas...but not this week. we checked out hotel prices and the lowest rate on the strip is at the flamingo...for 3-hundred and 12 dollars a night. staying downtown is less...the d has rooms for 1-hundred or 1-hundred 50 dollars a night. but that's if you can even find a room! circus circus and treasure island are all booked up.
5:30 am
hotel managers aren't complaining... "helps us with our occupancy which of course also drives our gaming revenue and the revenues at our bars and restaurants and entertainment." this year the convention runs this wednesday through saturday...but there are events starting today. backlash and protests erupting all over the middle east. this morning executions are pitting one country against
