the e-p-a says the schools safe, but some parents aren't buying it. and just because the school is reopening, it doesn't mean the mercury scare is over. parents are now worried the substance is inside their homes. plus a backyard catches fire at a home on the east side of town. crews are investigating how it started.. i'm following that and more from the breaking news center.. let's get over to todd and good morning las vegas! i'm todd quinones. and i'm beth fisher the time now is ... let's get started with 13 first alert meteorologist greg bennett... who has a windy forecast for us. parker collins is live at the school... with why parents are still worried... despite the e-p-a saying the school is safe. officials say even now they don't know who or when the mercury was brought to the school. but they say the school has been through a deep cleaning... to make sure the mercury is gone. crews have ripped up tile... removed part of the gym floor...and replaced all a-c filters in the gym. parents are still frustrated... there are still things like haven't gotten back... because of contamination. "i still don't know if they're safe, because they still haven't said who brought it....somebody should know something" the district is working on makeup days... they're thinking election days and another day around thanksgiving. we will be here as school starts talking with kids and parents. reporting live parker collins thirteen action news.
behind the mercury scare.. nearly 14-hundred students were screened.. and 80-homes have been inspected for the substance. one home had such dangerous levels inside, it forced the family to evacuate. now as for walter johnson junior high... the epa says the mercury levels were highest in the gym and locker rooms where the readings were 10 to 15 times the safe amount. even though the school is reopening this morning, it contamination is over. authorities are still worried about mercury in some of the students' homes. georgette byrd says the epa found traces at her front door and throughout the house. but the highest levels were found in her grandaughter's jacket. they told us the level of 6000 is high and the jacket jacket was at 20,000 georgette says she's following epa instructions by placing clothes out in the sun..
