and good morning, everyone. welcome to "mornings on 2." it's saturday, june 9th. i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. expect a windy day out there. let's check in with rosemary. >> good morning to you. yes, as we watch the winds pick up later today, also an increase in the fire danger. if morning, mostly clear. a little bit of a cool start. a cool start to the morning. and some of us will be turning windy. we'll take a look at what areas are facing an advisory and i will have your afternoon highs coming up. two oakland freeways are back open this morning. they were closed overnight to allow pg&e crews to restring. they were shut down from about 11:00 to this morning. they replaced two lines after an elderly woman ran into a power pole yesterday afternoon. about 6700 people in the area lost power. the woman was taken to the

hospital with cuttens and bruises. allie rasmus is live for us in oakland where conditions are riped for fire danger. >> reporter: you can see the lines have been restrung be. the power is -- restrung. the power pole is upright. you can see why firefighters were so concerned. there are a lot of homes in the area. some reasons were briefly evacuated when the fire broke out yesterday afternoon. the fire was contained in about an hour and a half. no one was hurt. no homes damaged but it did serve as a remainder about the fire danger. a red flag warning goes into effect today from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. the dry, warm temperatures and expected windy conditions are putting firefighters across the

state on alert. >> we're here to respond to any fires in the state -- >> this weekend we're ramping up with one tanker. >> reporter: calfire now has some of its aircraft on standby at the santa rosa airport. one of the air pilots told ktvu that the conditions now are the driest they've seen in decades. and there is a red flag warning in effect today, as a reminder. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a deadly crash overnight in oakland. around 4:30 this morning, a vehicle was traveling southbound on highway 13 just south of redwood road. the van veered into three trees. it took firefighters about 20 minutes to reach the victim and they had to use the jaws of life. the victim, they say, likely died on impact. we understand the man was in his 40s.

investigators say they don't believe alcohol was a factor in this crash. san francisco police are investigating a shooting that left a man in critical condition. it happened just after 11:30 last night in the city's mission district. the male victim was taken to san francisco general hospital with life-threatening injuries. members of occupy san francisco say they will now take their protest to the courtroom. eight protesters face misdemeanor charges for taking over two buildings back in april and may. a night protester faces more serious charges for throwing bricks from the roof. well, the commission of officer johannes mehserle will stand. he's sirveed his two-year sentence. but he wanted that conviction

overturned -- he's served his two-year sentence. but he wanted that conviction overturned. he will now appeal to the state supreme court. next week, a brentwood softball coach is expected to enter a plea against three sex crimes against a minor. he was charged on monday after an investigation by police. the incidents occurred may 30th. fritz faces charges in 2010 for inappropriate text messages that he sent for another girl. and another such for sierra lamar will begin. she's been missing since march 15th. antolin garcia-torres has been charged with her kidnapping and murder. despite that, the family is hoping for her to still be

alive. more than 50 heritage high school seniors were suspended and banned from the school's graduation ceremony over a senior rank. the contra costa times says the suspended students' parents will host an alternative ceremony at one of their homes. the students were punished for vandalizing the school and for chaining up a lamb last week. starting next week, dogs will have to be on a leash at moraga park. a group of residents are trying to overturn this. on wednesday, they submitted a commission to the city council asking to keep the 30-year off- leash tradition alive. the counsel has 0 days to verify the issue -- has 30 days to verify the issue. it's shaping up to be a warm weekend but also a windy day. rosemary is watching all of that for us. how is if looking? >> a little bit of a cool

start. some of us looking back in the 40s. we'll rebound quickly. our numbers will be up. it will be nice in many spots. we're talking about the dry, northerly winds really kicking up in some spaces. that will dry the atmosphere and increase the fire danger. giving you a live look at beautiful blue skies. the winds will help to bring us good visibility. santa rosa, ten miles an hour. 3 in fairfield. you can see the winds not bad right now. they are gusting a little bit in the hills. they are going to increase for the afternoon. we're looking at a red flag warning for some of the bay area. we're talking the carquinez strait through the delta, solano county and the central valley. you can see sacramento town into san joaquin. most of the bay area, no warning here but we'll continue to be dry. the winds are really expected to kick up in some spots along the coast and for our hills

gusting to 40 to 45 miles an hour. a look at the satellite radar. this ridge of high pressure continues to move toward the coast. we have a weak system. see that, that's called an inside slider and the difference between those air masses is what's bringing us the winds. areas around petaluma, 82 for you today. 79 in kentfield. 69 for sausalito. to the east bay, areas around oakland, san leandro, upper os. danville, livermore, 84 expected for pittsburg, down into the south bay, how about 78. santa clara, and 77 for sunnyvale. along the peninsula, it's going to be a nice day for you. 74 san bruno. 76 san mateo, 69 in san francisco. widespread mid-60s along the coast. pacifica as well as half moon bay there and santa cruz going to be nice and mild to warm as

good morning to you. a live look from our roof cam this morning towards the city. san francisco, 54 degrees and light winds. a man was killed in a double shooting overnight at a graduation celebration in antioch. the party was at a home near west 9th and i-streets. police say they responded to the shooting just before 2:45 this morning. two men were found with gunshot wounds. one of them died at the scene. anyone with information about the gunman is asked to call

antioch police. a portland man has been charged with two counts of murder including a bay area teenager. adrian walz is accused of fatally shooting his mother and sniffier on monday night. his 16-year-old -- nephew on monday night. his 16-year-old nephew was visiting and his next scheduled court date is june 25th. if convicted, he could face the death penalty. gerald galaway faces 0 to 40 years in prison -- 20 to 40 years in prison. prosecutors say he killed celestial cassman in hawaii last year. he was arrested the mex day. police in washington, d.c. arrested a han who may have

over the investigations. recent news reports the two prosecutors will have great latitude in investigating the white house and congress about those leaks. a military justice say bradley manning downloaded files while working as an intelligence analyst in baghdad in 2009 and 2010. they say he aided al qaeda by handing over war logs and battlefield video clips. the national institute for occupational safety and help says the program should cover 50 types of cancer for police, fire, paramedics and other be new yorkers who inhaled -- and

on the collection side. >> take about five or six really deep breaks. >> doctors are giving deals to patients who pay cash up front. on wednesday, more than 4500 registered nurses are hitting the picket line. nurses at petaluma valley hospital and nurses from sutter health facilities will be striking. they say it's over changes to on-call scheduling and pay. they say these changes could lead to unsafe conditions. but hospital officials say the changes are fair and necessary under president obama's affordable care act. these at&t employees in oakland were part of 18,000 workers who staged a one-day strike in california and nevada. the union communications workers of america and at&t have been negotiating since the

current contract expired in april. disagreements include annual pay raises, sick leave and employee contributions. for the first time, california highway patrol officers will be furloughed. this agreement goes to union voters. the bay area is ruling out of -- rolling out the red carpet for the world's top golfers. they are putting the final touches on before next week's u.s. open. more than 334,000 spectators are expected -- 33,000 spectators are expected on each day of that tournament. two golf lovers are spending their vacation voling at the -- volunteering at the open. >> i was able to go in the tent with the media and do the mail and be on the greens with them.

a grass fire near fremont caused a traffic jam on 680. cameras here captured the backup. you can see the emergency lights from fire trucks on the left side of the screen. firefighters say they got ton scene pretty quickly and put out the flames before any were able to spread. a brush fire in los angeles county has burned 500 acres so far. the so-called five-mile fire has closed part of interstate 5 near castaic. about 250 firefighters are working in the area. they have the fire about 10% contained. the cause is still under investigation. if you are looking for something to do today, it's free to get into yosemite national park. it's all in celebration of national get out doors today. while there's no fee to get out, there's -- admission is also free today near woods national monument if you want

to stay a little closer to home as well as san francisco's maritime historical work. i was just there. it was beautiful. it did rain, which i blame rosemary for. it was cold but it warmed right back up. you forget about the temperatures when you see the gorgeous -- >> oh, yeah. no rain this weekend and we'll be dry and the winds will be strong. those northerly winds creating a bit of concern when it comes to fire danger. if you are heading to the beaches, there is an advisory for elevated bacteria levels in the water. we're talking about parts of san mateo, parts of santa cruz and parts of monterey county beaches. they will be posted there. i just want you to be aware of that if you are thinking, mostly sunny skies, it will be nice, let's head to the beach. temperatures upper 40s, low 50s. mostly clear skies.

there's a gust in santa rosa and parts of the delta. winds generally between 5 to 10 miles an hour. at noontime, low 60s to the coast. 60s to low to mid-70s. already nice to mild between lunchtime and dry breezy weather expected for the afternoon. mid-80s in the forecast. for some of the warmer spots. definitely a change over yesterday, anywhere from 5 to 8 degrees dramming -- warming for many spots. we do expect a bit of an onshore breeze for the afternoon, but that northerly wind will be with us for today. if you are just joining us parts of the delta with a red flag warning a little bit later this afternoon and this morning and lasting through the day. your extended forecast shows you the heat will be on, monday, tuesday, thursday. mid- to upper 40s for the coast. if you are looking to adopt

the repairs are complete and two major bay area roadways are back open this morning. gunman, everyone -- good morning, everyone. i'm me back. >> i'm claudine wong. a section of the freeway was closed between 11:00 p.m. and 12:30 this morning. pg&e crews replaced two lines knocked down when an elderly woman knocked down a power pole. about 6700 people in the area lost power and this also sparked a brush fire and allie rasmus is in oakland with how this is increasing fire danger. >> reporter: good morning. there is a red flag warning

scheduled to go into effect today starting from 11:00 to 10:00 tonight. right now we're in the oakland hills. behind us you can see some of the damage sparked by the grass fire that started with that downed power line out here. you can see from the black soot on the ground where the fire kept up the hillside, and around the fire line there is a fire hose still out here. no one was injured in the fire. it does serve as a reminder about the continued fire danger this weekend. about 100 oakland firefighters worked along the park and cal firefighters to put that fire out in just over an hour. we are now two weeks into the fire eason. firefighters across the state are preparing for this warm weekend. >> it's the wind, i think. it's the hot, dry, temperatures and the wind, especially the north wind because the north wind is a drying wind and when you get a fire going, the rate

the murder weapon. police say four people tried to rob the golden treasure store on may 30th. but when one of the men pull out a gun, the store owner pulled out a gun and shot him. police are sill searching for one more suspect in the case. a 4-year-old girl from concord is recovering from her 8th surgery. she was playing in front of her family's apartment. and she told -- she told her parents another be child threw chalk in the street and has when she went out to get it. that's when she was -- and that's when she went out to get it. that's when she was struck by a blue truck. >> that person deserves to be punished, whatever he did to my child. >> the family is offering $2,000 for any information that leads to an arrest and now they are hoping their child fully recovers. if the latest operation to repair her ankle does not work. doctors say they may have to amputate. >> a man in his 50s is

recovering from minor injuries this morning. it happened along the f-line yesterday morning. firefighters say the man may have been trying to get on the trolley when he somehow got trapped. he suffered cuts on his legs and was taken to the hospital. squatters are taking over a foreclosed home in antioch. >> do you guys live here? >> yeah. >> are you squatting in this house? >> no. can you get the camera off me. >> we don't have to. we're standing on the sidewalk. >> eric rasmussen, a reporter, talked to someone who said she has a lease. but neighbors say that woman and several others have been squatting there. the cutlers used to own the home but moved out after losing it in foreclosure. >> the police officer told me there is a real bad element

are not bad. they are gonna be picking up for the afternoon and we even have advisories to talk about here in just a moment. the satellite radar showing you what's going on out there. we have this week hoe that's moving through. we like to -- it doesn't have any moisture with it. but the change in the air mass from that to this ridge of high pressure is really gonna crank up the winds. and the high pressure as it builds in will bring the sinking air. we're looking at clear conditions, warmer conditions. breezy for the coast today. inland areas are really going to turn hot over the next couple of days. the dry weather is gonna bring on the heightened fire danger. upper 40s in napa. 49 for livermore. 53 in san jose. not too bad out there. we were a little bit cooler but now our temperatures are starting -- are starting to warm a little bit. 83 novato. 8 pelt luma.

sections of interstate 580 and highway 13 were shut down from 11:00 p.m. to this morning. an elderly woman ran into a power pole on mount boulevard yesterday afternoon and about 6700 customers in the area cost power. investigators say the driver suffered some type of medical problem. the crash also sparked a three- alarm, two-acre brush fire. police investigates -- police investigated homes. >> that's when i saw the fire, going down the hill. pretty scary. >> about 100 firefighters battled the fire. they made sure there were no embers last night. the woman driver is reportedly in stable condition at the hospital. that incident in oakland is another reminder of the fire danger in the bay area. firefighters believe it will be an active fire season.

overnight but those highways are now back open. that three alarm brush fire sparked by that accident is out this morning but the fire danger i re mains this weekend. allie rasmus is live now in oakland as a red flag warning is set to go into into effect in a couple hours. >> reporter: there is an increased fire danger because of the warm temperatures we're going to have all weekend and also expected wind gusts later on. we were just over at the fire station where they were preparing for the warm summer months and they were talking about this grass fire they had to put out yesterday. you can see some of the damage. this is near the intersection of edwards and mountain boulevard. it burned yesterday afternoon after downed power lines sparked the fire. a hundred oakland firefighters worked along east bay park to contain the grass fire. firefighters say it's a reminder to prepare for the summer months. >> we're at a heightened fire alert which means people need

good morning welcome to mornings on 2 it is saturday june 9th i'm claude claude and i'm mike mibach. let's get over to meteorologist rosemary orozco. guilty or not guilty to you. orozco. mostly clear skies outside our door this morning. we are going to turn warmer, some of us windy and those dry winds sparking a red flag warning, we'll show you what you can expect for your neighborhood this afternoon coming up. in overnight news investigators are trying to figure out what caused a deadly crash in oakland. around 4:30 a vehicle was traveling southbound on highway 13 just south of redwood road. the van veered off the right side of the roadway and into three trees. it took firefighters about 20 minutes to reach the victim and they had to use the jaws of life. he did not survive and rescue crews believe the victim died on impact. his identity has not been

released e. investigators do not believe alcohol was a factor. one man was killed at a graduation party in antioch. the party was near a home at west 9th. police responded at 2:45 this morning. two men had gunshot wounds and one died at the scene. two oakland freeways are back open this morning. they were closed overnight to allow pg&e crews to restring downed power lines. sections of interstate 580 and highway 13 were shut down from around 11 p.m. to 12:30 this morning. utility crews crews replaced two lines that were down after an elderly woman ran into a power pole yesterday afternoon. about 6700 customers lost power. the woman was taken to the hospital with cuts and bruises. that crash also sparked a fire that burned 2 acres. fire danger is high this weekend. ktvu allie rasmus live for us

as firefighters are getting ready for this fire season. >> yeah, there is an increased fire danger for the bay area this weekend because of the warm temperatures and also later today there's supposed to be some wind gusts of up to 45 miles an hour coming through. we were over at oakland fire station 17 when where they were talking about tackling their first grass fire of the year. this is what's leftover it, 2 acres of hillside near mountain boulevard and edwards avenue burned yesterday afternoon after those power lined sparked the fire. 100 firefighters worked to contain the grass fire in just over an hour. no one was hurt. no homes were damaged but firefighters say it is a reminder to prepare for fire season. >> getting into the summer season now, so the conditions are increasing the fire danger, although we're not at a high fire danger today. we just want the community to be more alert to conditions. and people need to be conscious when they're mowing their

woman killed four french troops. it occurred in a marketplace in the eastern part of that country. french forces were responding to a report of an explosive planted under a bridge. when they got there the suicide bomber who was wearing a burr coo blew himself up. another nato soldier was also killed in a separate bombing. police are investigating a shooting that left a man in critical condition in san fransisco. it happened after 11:30 last night at the corner of 16th 16th and the male victim was transported to san fransisco general hospital with life- threatening injuries. so far no arrests have been made. members of occupy san fransisco say they're not going to take their protest to the courtroom. 8 protesters face misdemeanor charges for taking over two buildings in assistance san fransisco back in april and may. a 9th protester faces more serious charges for allegedly throwing bricks from the top of a roof injuring one people.

they say they're going to occupy the courtroom by rejecting plea deals and going to a full trial. the conviction of forter bart police officer will stand. a state appeal's court ruled that he claims he mistook his gun for a taser amounted to criminal negligence. he was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for killing officer grant back in 2009 and has already served his two-year sentence. his attorney says he's going to appeal the conviction to the state supreme court. next week a long time brent wood softball coach is scheduled to enter a plea on three charges of sex crimes against a minor. 37-year-old ryan frits was charged on monday after an investigation by police. they say the incidents occurred may 30th and involved one victim. he also faced charges in 2010 for inappropriate text messages and e-mails he had sent to a different girl. right now volunteers are once again searching for signs of missing teenager sierra

lamar lamar. 21-year-old torrez has been arrested for her cell phone kidnapping and murder. volunteers for today's search can meet at the sierra search center. a separate graduation party is being held this morning for students in brent wood who can't celebrate with their classmates. more than 50 heritage high school seniors were suspended and banned from the school's graduation ceremony over a senior prank. the tra cost times say they'll host an alternative ceremony at one of their homes. they were punished for vandalizing the school. starting today dogs will have to be on leash autology that park. this new law is going to be in effect until the city can build in a fenced in dog run at the park. a group of residents is trying to overturn that. on wednesday they submitted a petition asking to keep the 30 year off leash tradition alive.

accused of shooting his mother and nephew on monday night. his nephew lives in mountain view but was in oregon when that shooting happened. he was formally charged yesterday and may request a mental evaluation. his next scheduled court date is june 25th. if convicted he could face the death penalty. 39 gerald gal way of santa cruz has pled no contest to manslaughter and kidnapping. when he is sentenced on september 11th prosecutors say he kidnapped attorney during a domestic dispute while vacation vacationing in hawaii. they say gal way ran from them, jumped off a cliff and was arrested the next day. federal officials want to expand the health program for 9- 1-1's first responders. the national institute for occupational safety and health says the program should cover 50 types of cancer for police

fire, paramedics and other new yorkers who i think hailed toxic dust. the expansion would make them eligible for free treatment. a deadly outbreak of e. coli has hit california and six other states. 14 people have gotten six in california and one child died in louisiana. illnesses were also reported in georgia, alabama, tennessee, as well as florida. health officials have identified the specific strain but are still interviewing people who have gotten sick, trying to figure out the source. some at&t workers have returned to their jobs after a 1-day walkout. these employees in oakland were part of 18,000 workers who staged the protest in california and nevada. the union and at&t have both been negotiating since april. disagreements include annual pay raises sick leaf and employee contributions to

health care coverage. on wednesday more than 4500 registered nurses are expected to hit the picket line. nurses at petaluma valley hospital and sutter health facilities will all be striking and they say it's to changing to on call scheduling and pay. they say those changes could lead to unsafe conditions for surgical nursing staff and patients. hospital says the changes are fair and necessary. some doctors are now offering discounts to patients who pay their bills early or bypass their insurance companies. patients with insurance who settle their hospital bills right away can get 25% off. even those without insurance can get as much as half off their bill if they pay the hospital directly within 30 days. doctors like david belk are giving deals to patients who

pay upfront. he says patients should negotiate and find out if they can lower bills. california highway patrol officers are going to be furloughed. they reached an agreement with the governor yesterday to furlough officers eight hours per month for a year. it will go to union members for a ratification vote and the furloughs would go into effect on july 1st. san jose residents are working to save four libraries but the mistake of one city clerk is setting them back. budget cuts are preventing the libraries from opening so the group decided to take action. they started collecting signatures to put an initiative on the ballot for funding but when the group was about to turn in what they thought was enough signatures they learned they needed three times as many as they had. >> from our perspective another sad sign of a failure of management at the city level. >> it was an error on our part, and we apologize for that. >> city clerk dennis awe kins

recap our top stories a man in his 40s died after his van veered off the road and into some trees. it happened around 4:30 this morning on highway 13 south of redwood road. investigators do not believe alcohol was a factor in that crash. pg&e crews have repaired two downed power lines on interstate 580. the emergency work did cause the freeway to close between 11 last night and 12:30 this morning. police say an elderly driver knocked down the power pole which also caused an outage for some 6700 people. that crash also caused a 2-acre fire and fire danger is high this weekend with increased wind and warm temperatures. ktvu allie rasmus is live now in oakland with how firefighters are preparing. >> reporter: there is an increased fire danger for the bay area this weekend not just because of the warm temperatures but also the wind is supposed to pick up. yesterday oakland firefighters and residents got a reminder about this upcoming fire season

when firefighters have to tackle their first grass fire of the year. it started with downed power lines. if you look at the hill next to this power pole you can see where the fire crept up the hill. a total of 2 acres burned near mountain boulevard and edwards avenue yesterday afternoon. 100 oakland firefighters worked along side east bay regional park to contain this grass fire in just over an hour. no one was hurt. earlier this morning we were at oakland fire station 17 where we saw them preparing for the warm weekend and the fire season ahead. >> we're at a heightened fire alert, which means people need to be conscious when they're mowing their lawns, don't discard cigarettes out of their cars. just be really conscious of what you're doing as far as open flames and such. >> we're now two weeks into the fire season, and cal fire is also getting prepared. they have aircraft on stand by already. they have a total of 22 tanker
