to remind everybody in case you forgot it's election day. it's tuesday, november 8th. we've been looking forward to this day for quite some time. we want to check in with steve. no weather excuses. >> zero. >> nice brownout fit. -- outfit. we have a nice day out there. there is a very strong low coming out of the gulf of alaska. yesterday it went up and there she goes. so far it does not look to be anybody as we had yesterday especially south. it was just crazy for a while. hazy sunshine. some of the higher elevation of
the breeze does kick up. upper 40s and 60 degrees. 59 and 47 in kelseyville. for us it's cool but it will warm up today. >> 5:01 on your screen there. >> pretty quiet as we look at the commute getting into the bay area. from tracy we see the 580 and 205 and a little bit of traffic into livermore. at the west bay toll plaza the commute is light into san francisco. it doesn't look bad. 280 out of downtown san jose and sunnyvale and west valley still look good and the train into silicon valley is on time. 5:01. let's go back to the desk.
it's election day. in case you didn't know, it's time to cast your ballot for president. >> hillary clinton and donald trump had their rallies scheduled in new york city. look at that. we have a live picture right now. we've been waiting for this, for hillary clinton, former president bill clinton. it's always a big deal to watch the two presidential candidates nominees. they are heading to the polls. >> we are also keeping an eye on donald trump. hillary clinton and bill clinton getting ready to vote. >> she's not voting in new york? she is.. they are both voting in new york. >> they are going to rally in new york. >> they are out there and a lot

new york. she's in the crowd there. will we saw her walk in with former president bill clinton. there he is voting. to the right in the gray suit is hillary clinton. i think we know who she voted for. >> i'm guessing. we are live talking to you now in new york near their home. by the way, donald trump is said to be going to vote from new york as well. as well. back here at home, according to the secretary of state's office about 78% of eligible voters in california are registered to vote. that is the highest percentage in general election in 20 years. we saw long lines in san francisco city hall yesterday.
most of the state's 19 million registered voters are expected to vote by mail. many that still means millions of people will head to the polls today. the polls will open at 7:00 this morning and stay open until 8:00 tonight. >> they are searching through all of those mail-in ballots. >> yes, we are here at the registrar's office. i have got my own mail by vote ballot. i'm going to stick it here in the slot. i'm not the first person this morning. in the last 10 minutes i have seen about 5-10 people drive through here and drop off their ballots. we are going to see lots of people at the polls today.
san francisco is expecting 85 percent voter turnout. the 33,000 people have already cast their ballots in voting. workers are working around-the-clock at the registrar's office. early voting is being put into machines. there is a battle for a congressional seat between in incumbent mike honda and there is pension reform for city workers. >> i want it to be over, but i'm not sure i want it to be over appending the results. i'm glad it's brought out so many voters. >> there are 836 voter places in the south bay and soon they will start manning those poll places. they wanted to make sure they
had enough workers to handle all the ballots. they are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.. >> thank you. >> time is now 5:08. if you need a ride to the polls today, several are offering a special discount just on election day. uber, lyft and zip car. zip car is offering free rides from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the bay area. uber is offering $20 off. and lyft is giving a discount in honor of the president. you can access them by utilizing their apps. >> we have all the information online. you can find information from each of the bay area counties. in other news, a member of
the water polo from high school is accused of sexually assaulting an opponent during a match last month on october 11th against alameda student. this is being investigated. when he was asked about the investigation, he said "this is news to me". police are investigating what someone sprayed on a wall and ground. we blurred out the offensive words. bart has since cleaned that graffiti. >> san francisco is also dealing with graffiti. someone broke into the assessor's office inside the building and left human waste there. the santa clara county
sheriff's office is looking for a serial burglar in san jose. this man burglarized this halloween shopping center. he broke into a togo shop and a nail salon. we already have some results on this election day. coming up at 5:30 how the voters from a little town in new hampshire cast their ballots. >> people lay on the ground. >> chaos outside the martinez courthouse, a woman plowed through 3 people in her car and then jumped off the bridge. we have the latest that may have touched off this bizarre series

through a retaining wall but when it didn't work, she got off and jumped off the bridge. >> we didn't know. the vehicle had a lot of damage. >> she was just coming out of the courthouse following a divorce hearing. her husband is the former medical director in the steroid scandal. investigators in soul will start examining three bodies found on the property of a man who already confessed to four other murders. a third body found yesterday. it will take time to determine the gender, the age and cause of death for at least two of those victims. he told the investigators where
to look for the bodies. they will investigate other land that he owns. >> we don't believe there are anymore properties. right now we feel like we have found all the bodies that are here. >> when cole was arrested, he told officials he was also responsible for the killings back in 2003 of four people at a motorcycle shop. it was led when a woman was found alive and chained. officials believe her boyfriend is one of those found on the land. it was a horrifying scene on a new york city platform where a woman was killed after being shoved on the path of an oncoming train. a 49-year-old woman was report edly arguing with a woman when she was
pushed. authorities described her as emotionally disturbed. they are trying to determine what the women were arguing about. a massive sinkhole is causing some major disruptions in japan. that sink hole is the entire width of a 5-lane road. it disrupted subway service and eight households are evacuated now because of city gas line ruptures. they believe a nearby subway line maybe to blame. did you hear about steph curry? he set another record last night. he was 0 for 10. last night he hit 13, 3s.

>> it's a great shot. it's nice to see. that nice ark he makes. very nice. good morning, everyone. let's take a look at the gilroy commute now and look at what it's like to drive from gilroy to san jose.. not a bad commute. still looking good throughout the west valley. the commute looks pretty good now. today being presidential election voting day, we may see people sticking around. as you know the polls don't open until 7:00 a.m.. some people maybe going after but with the mail-in voting may be before. here is a pretty good live picture of the downtown commute. we are off to a nice start when
it comes to generally that bay area commute. mostly clear out there. a little bit of fog. santa rosa is reporting some, yesterday it was san jose, and peninsula. so far it's quiet out here. the high clouds have gone way to the north. we are all right and we don't have to worry about that. the waves will continue to build, hence a high surf advisory will continue through today and 6:00 wednesday. this strong low is generating this large as well but also generating a lot of ridge high pressure. there is not only a ridge of high pressure. at the surface as well we get the offshore breeze for some. higher elevation can be breezy at times but not too bad. it's a north or easterly breeze for just about everyone.
50s on the temperatures and then an occasional offshore breeze. if you commute in from the east, it's a little chilly and you head to oakland and san francisco, it's 10 degrees warmer because of that breeze direction. it's kind of a quiet week here. patchy fog, sunshine and mild temperatures. some higher elevation also getting in on that eastern component. it's a very quiet weather week. a few 60s, a lot of 70s. 76 should cover this spread. san jose is one of the warmer and santa cruz will be the warmest today. not much change here. weak system will clear out saturday. >> it's quiet. >> for now.
life in prison. he left a person dead and injured three others. he told the court he targeted tsa officers because he was angry about airline security rules. the security sent travelers and employees running for their lives and disrupt air travel around the country. real estate heir robert durst pleaded guilty to the charges that he murdered a friend years ago. he arrived in jail and wearing a next brace. he killed susan berman to keep her from talking investigators about the murder of his first wife. durst was arrested the very same day after a release of a documentary which describes the killings he is
accused of. the deadliest shooting site in history will be turned into a memorial. someone has offered to buy that nightclub for $2 million. that place has left the place as a memorial. he killed 39 people and left more than 50 wounded. >> the election is almost over. still a ballot count and how it turned out there. >> in the end, we are all americans. >> the election has been filled with controversy. how 1 person is working on healing the wounds by the race even though the voes have been cast. we are looking at a commute

complete election coverage. but first, you want to know what the weather is going to be like. >> it's a perfect day to do it except for a tiny bit of fog. a system just pushing was past seattle. it's a warm up this time of year. above average temps. we are looking for a lot of 70s and a few 60s. some in santa rosa and petaluma and yesterday it was about san jose and santa clara county and lose altos. it's okay for now. for some higher elevation it can be breezy at times. if you are inland, it might be on the cool side. peninsula low 50s including loss
altos and except for a high cloud or two. sunny, mild and warm and plenty of 70s here and 60s and 70s in the city and 76 in san jose. all right, steve, here we are. if you are driving to solano county. a little slower in vallejo. it's not bad. as we take a look at the bay bridge now, you can see the mirroring lights are on now. the toll plaza is still about 7 minutes. once you get on the bridge, it's good. that traffic looks good. the silicon valley commute is
still looking good. >> it is a busy day, an important day. decision time, the polls are opening around the country this morning capping on a really brutal election year. hillary clinton and donald trump were campaigning through several swing states. at a voter precinct this morning outside of washington d.c... >> voting has begun in virginia and this was a state that was reliably republican, now it's reliably democratic. this may give us an idea of this enthusiasm. >> this is just after midnight. midnight. a resounding clinton victory four votes to two. they thought this would be a race between bernie sanders and
kasich. >> hillary clinton went well past midnight campaigning in north carolina after a massive rally in philadelphia which included the obama. donald trump also burning the midnight oil. >> did you ever think you would have a major speech at 1:00 in the morning? is this crazy. >> with trump, the tips are massing in his favor. with iowa, utah to lean republican. but for clinton, the masses still favor a democrat with a victory. >> florida is the one. if she holds them off in florida, it's over. >> the senate is where the action will be. democrats need to pick up five seats to take control and republicans have more seats to defend.
>> republicans need more to control the senate. i think they will take the senate by a very very narrow margin. >> some of those senate races are going to be fascinating to watch tonight. it's a turnout and anecdotally speaking, we have seen a long line this morning. the not new york city police department is increasing safety. more than 5,000 officers will be on-the-job throughout new york city. others will be present including the secret service. >> today is election day but the vote count has already started here in the bay area. katie, you are outside in the courthouse as a lot of people
took advantage of early voting. >> yes. there are more people voting early and by mail than the last election in santa clara county and same true for san francisco and contra costa county. many have already cast their ballots early at the courthouse or turning in a mail-in battle ballots. >> tonight after the polls close, those are the first election results that will be released. the county registrar says that early voting is a trend and it gives them an idea of how high voter turnout will be over all. >> from the shear numbers we have a higher number of registered voters than ever.
888,000 voters in our election. i think we are going to see a very good turnout. >> alameda county will have a drop out. people can just drive through and turn in your ballot. you can also turn it in to your polling station. you can also mail it today. even if they arrive as late as monday the 14th, they can still be counted. >> thank you. >> turning now to some of the big ballot measures. prop 64 would make recreation marijuana legal for the growing and selling and use of pot. it's a result of a 2-year analysis on legalizing marijuana in washington and colorado.
he says the california initiative is tighter but flexible and can be changed if needed. it may take a year for retail sales to begin. >> meanwhile, bernie sanders was in sacramento yesterday making a final push to pass prop 61. it will ban for paying for more prescription drugs than the veteran as administration. the california nurses association like that proposal. >> they are spending millions of dollars to defeat the measure. t the measure. >> the drug companies to make sure that california and the american people continue to pay the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs. drugs. >> veterans groups are also fighting the proposal saying it could push up drug prices for
all californians. >> there are many california issues and they are working to bring the nation back together. they are asking people to think of what can bridge the divide. another pledge is to invite friends and colleagues that voted different than you into your home. it's what other groups have considered as well. >> one of the things we are asking people to do is to pledge to visit other places of worship and get to know other people of the community. >> the idea seems to be resonating on twitter with some people are using for healing and united not divided. turn to ktvu for complete coverage this afternoon. with the first results and we are going to stay on the air

a new ferry called prop sf plans to provide ferryboat trips to the public. it will take about 10 minutes and cost about $10. they want to expand service around the bay to areas that don't have service such as benicia and antioch and redwood city run which is set to start in january. >> we are at a bottleneck with traffic and any other solution is a pretty long ways off. our goal is to make it as inexpensive as possible so we can attract anybody. >> the current ferry is 41-feet long and carries 36 passengers. a larger one is 55-feet long and will carry 48 passengers and almost 50 miles per hour. time is now 5:44.
a man from oakland received a surprise. >> he uses a wheelchair. but that has not stopped him from taking to the skies as a pilot. we are shown as a surprise guest is helping him. >> quincy car loves this sign at the street corner. he tries to get the attention of motors, but he loves being a pilot. >> carr has a private pilot license. 4 years ago he was shot at a barber shot. he learned to fly without hand controls. he even learned his commercial pilot license. he told us he wants to go to school to become a flight instructor. >> what is your dream? >> to become a flight

how is the tracy commute and they sound like -- that's what it's like. the drive coming in is slow and also going to be slow on the 205 coming from the mountain pass parkway exit. a lot of that is really slow traffic about 15-20 miles per hour as you get through the thick of it and it gets better by the time you get the livermore. now here through antioch it gets better in concourse as you get through the willow pass grade to willow pass road. this is about a 15-minute delay , and many people rare out early. for people who like to go and vote on election day. we are expecting even busier traffic later on after that
happens. >> we have perfect voting weather. we have clear skies. there is a little bit of an offshore breeze. it picks up for a few especially in some of the higher elevations i have seen as well and on the coast it's an early and northerly breeze. >> in the santa clara county mountains it's a pleasant 53 degrees. it looks good here. coastal forecast we have to talk about a high surf advisory until 3:00 and until 6:00 tomorrow with a very deep low from the gulf of alaska. the cloud cover was visiting us yesterday, but not today. this system is falling apart. just some patchy low clouds. at the surface we have high pressure and that's a pretty quiet pattern here.
it's still north or east at napa and fairfield. a little cool, then you start to turn to the bay in the coast. san raffle is there and oakland and san francisco and also hayward. there is some cool readings, though with morgan hill and down to san jose and morgan hill, not so bad. scott's valley, 64 and tops at 56. san jose meteorology department, 57. in monterey up and over you go. you can see there is nothing here. not much is going to change for about 10 days. patchy fog, sunny, mild to warm. lots of 70s here. above average temps about 65. we are running above here. san francisco to santa rosa to antioch. once that sun starts to go, these temperatures start to go

>> welcome back. the city of santa clara is suing san jose for this building. santa clara's lawsuit filed on friday claims san jose did not study the adverse environmental affects of the project which sits on the city line of santa clara county. san jose says this is a previous retaliation for a lawsuit filed by santa clara. that's by where levi stadium will cause traffic problems. >> on this election day, the
latino vote may change the results at the election. yesterday they were at the church and they will be back there again. they went door to door reminding people to vote. if the projection is right, 15 million latinos will cast a ballot this year compared to the estimated 2 million who voted in the last presidential election 4 years ago. >> i think it shows that it matters, that we matter and that our communities are really rising. we were told we were the sleeping giant and we are not sleeping anymore and we are making sure we vote for candidates and measures and propositions that matter to our families. >> in early voting, the numbers are showing a surge of latinos in key battle ground states like georgia and north carolina. the gender gap in politics
remains. women make-up just 20% of the us senate and the house. today 13 women are contending. just senator gill brand of new york said it took her 10 years of law to apply. >> we are doubters and we believe we don't have what it takes. we need to represent our population and that starts with 51% women. >> she says women need to mentor and encourage other women to run for office. >> it has been a long election season. after a contentious election season, election day is finally here now. we'll have team coverage on the race for the white house and local races that ballot measures and voters are deciding. >> plus, a woman ran down her estranged husband and then took
