there is hitting midnight. look at all of those people down there, everyone is celebrating and bringing in 2017. do you see the number of selfie sticks. everyone is recording the moment. >> it's going to be a good year for apple. >> happy new years to japan. our count down continues in the bay area. not quite as exciting there but that will change. hundreds of thousands of people are expected to take part in the new years eve parties. we have live in the city to see how the preparations are going on. we will check in with that in a couple of minutes. while you were sleeping, big developments in this situation in southern california, people

were kept hanging 150 feet in the area on an amusement park ride. >> i was watching and feeling so bad for them. we have more on their rescue coming up. it's going to be a cold weekend. cold weather is moving in, a few scattered showers this morning. going back to that story, i was so scared for the people in southern california. but nothing scary in the weather. bring a jacket if you are going to be out celebrating today. look, we have a few scattered showers hitting the bay area this morning. storms number two is coming in. yesterday's system came from the south. it just brought us some cloud

cover, maybe a few sprinkles across the bay area. this next system is coming in from the north. bringing cold air. not much moisture though. window have a few secures along the coast line from ocean beach to pacifica and santa cruz along the mountains. in ogz, look at the pink. window have -- oakland, look at the pink, we have a rain/snow mix. to the north, you are not going to need the umbrellas. into the 5:00 hour, the system is gone. partly cloudy skies for the afternoon and cool air moving

in. 37 in walnut creek. below freezing is santa rosa, 41 redwood city. 41 in the south bay. a cool afternoon as the cooling continues. that's the headline for the next few days, i have a look at your new years eve forecast coming up. we are less than 17 hours away from 2017, big celebrations are planned throughout the bay area. we are live in san francisco, are people lining up for the big show yet? >> reporter: no, not yet but this is prime real estate. we are next to the clock tower, close to the bathrooms and the water front. this is going to be the spot to be later on.

2016 is whipping down and the new year is hours away. it's always a great show here. i have seen it a couple of years, 200,000 people expected to pack the embarcadero. san francisco police will be around all night. police said there were so many officers here last year, it felt like the seurn bowl. bart police will also -- super bowl. bart police will also be out watching out for large scale attacks. >> it's hard to prevent some of these attacks, like the ones that took place in europe. >> reporter: we are here on the embarcadero.

city with with recent attacks targeting holiday crowds police are taking extra precautions. there will also be bomb sniffing dogs, as well as the fbi and secret service agents working alongside the police department. bay area crab fishermen are in a dispute with buyers that want to lower the purchase price of crabs. >> reporter: the boats came into san francisco bay, possibly for the last time. for now, it's not clear when they will return to sea as the fishermen are on strike. >> it's not a strike, we are just trying up until the price is right. >> reporter: the strike started

wednesday but was extended to friday when pacific choice seafood offered to pay $2 a powbd instead of $3. -- pound instead of $3. negotiations soo far have been salty and fishermen have drawn a line in the water. >> we have to make $3 a pound. that's what it takes to one a boat and pay the crew and fuel and everything else. if costs $3 a pound. if we do not get that, we might as well tie up. >> reporter: with boats tied up, people are feeling bad for the fishermen. >> this is a great order for us. they are losing out on a lot of

money. >> reporter: crabbers in san francisco make more than $3 a pound but they are striking in a slow of solidarity. >> it's their right to strike for more money, but it's a bad week for everyone for them to go on strike. thank you. someone is leaving a trail of swastika like graffiti in palo alto. these are pictures of the graffiti. the vandalism first appeared thursday night at bus signs.

the markings look similar to buddhist symbols. authorities believe that the attempt is antisemitic. steph curry is raising money for the victims of the deadly oakland warehouse fire by wearing shoes saying ghost ship and then auctioning them off. the shoes sold for $31,000. that's a record. what a great cause, all of the money goes into the oakland relief fund to help the victims of the deadly oakland warehouse fire and their families, 36 people died in that fire

strangers. >> reporter: victoria is temporarily living in this sonoma county hotel thanks to the kindness of strangers. she was ee convicted by family members that wanted to sell the house she was living in. >> it was awful, especially with a 10 year old, i never expected to have to live in a car and my family just disowned us, i do not know what i have done, but what did he do. >> reporter: they have been living in this car for one and a half years, sometimes in friends driveways but more so on the streets for the night. breakfasts are at fast food restaurants where they wash up for school and work. then on december 19th, someone

disis patched -- dispatched deputies to check on the welfare of the boy. >> i was at a bad place. >> we wanted to make sure that the boy was well cared for. he was well cared for but he was living in his car with his mother. >> i thought that they were going to take my son. they didn't, they just helped. >> reporter: responding deputies chose to pay for a room and then buy them some groceries to tide them over. >> they are both trying hard to get themselves out of their situation and they could not do it. the mom works a full time job. she was going through hard times. she makes sure that her son goes to school everyday. it's putting a strain on her so

it was cold this morning. we were just talking this week about how the bite was out of the air, now it's back. >> yes. it's going to get worse. it's going to get cold as we get into the back end of the weekend, maybe monday and tuesday, that's when system number three is dropping in. these systems do not have a lot of rain but very cold air. if you are going to tahoe, it's not bad when it comes to the roadways. no advisories to worry about but it's chilly. lets trawk about the resorts. they are looking good. they have most of their lifts eep. 24 inches at the base. at the summit, -- open. 24 inches at the base.

happy new years eve day day to you. -- day to you. >> i celebrate east coast. i start to celebrate at 9:00. i am inside for sure though. >> she's a weather girl. i will say that this is one of the holidays that i do not mind working, i love to see the fire works going off in other parts of the world. looking at the oakland estuary, we have a mix of cloud cover and blue skies, the storms are weak, bringing a few scattered showers here and there.

the cooling trend continues through the weekend. we are considering this storm number two. yesterday we had a system coming in from southern california. this is going to continue the trend but this storm is coming from the north. it's not going to have a lot of moisture but it's going to drive the temperatures do you know more. we have scattered showers into portions of the bay area. closer along the coast, we have a few bits of light shower activity. then along the coast, near ocean beach, down to belmont, on the edge of redwood city, showers are ending soon.

for tonight's new years celebrations. security will be tighter than ever. in some areas, you will not go more than a block without seeing a police officer. we are live at the ferry building in san francisco. >> reporter: australia and now new zealand, the celebrations are getting closer to us in san francisco. over here they are already starting to make preparations. you can see the bar kids they have to keep the crowds in place. later on, if the crowds get big enough, they will be shutting down the embarcadero. this area will be packed as the clock approaches midnight. 200,000 people are expected to come out.

year. aaa will offer free tows and rides, you do not have to be a member. the number is on the screen, just tell the operator you need a tipsy tow and the tow will be sent. russian hackers got into the computer system of a utility in the state of vermont. they did not disrupt operations. so far, united states intelligence officials are not sure what the russians were planning to do but the breach shows how much at risk the power grid is. the obama administration is carrying out a series of sanctions against russia for

hacking and trying to influence the united states presidential election. two facilities used by russia were shut down on friday. the white house believes that they were being used for intelligence activities. diplomats have just one more day to return to russia after they were kicked out. the move is retaliation for russian hacking. yesterday morning, the russian diplomat in san francisco brought in the media. >> we can see that these

do. they couldn't lower it. they called the firefighters in for help. eight hours later they went down one by one with a rope and harness. not quite the ride they had anticipateded. watching from below described the reaction of his kids when they safely reached the ground. >> any two daughters came down and she got video taped and the 8-year-old girl was crying. >> seven of the people trapped were children. there were no reported injuries. the sky cabin is closed as you might imagine. it's going to stay closed until the cause will be investigated. and a pennsylvania state trooper was gunned down overnight. an abused suspect violating a protection order. weaver had just celebrated his first year anniversary with the

this morning. 9:11. k.tvu fresco users took these pictures. one was joled at that bus stop. the other marked some type of electrical unit maintained by santa clara county. they first saw the vandalism on thursday night it was at bus signs as well as at two law offices. and it looks similar to the hindu peace symbols. or a bit lazy when scrolling that graffiti. the authorities do believe that the intent is anti-semantic. san jose police are announcing they arrested three suspects all in connection with a three shooting in october. are in santa clara county jail facing murder charges. they're accused of fatally shooting 17-year-old umberto salas. a man in the car suffered what

police called non life threatening injuries as well. investigators say the shooting was part of a robbery attempt. bay area crab fishermen have now joined a protest. they're in a dispute with wholesale buyers who want to lower the purchase price of crab. offering to pay $2.75 a pound. prices weren't set on the west coast because the season opened in waves because of elevated acid levels that made the crab unable to eat. >> we have to make $3 a pound. that's what it takes to run a boat and pay the crew, and pay the insurance, and pay the bay and everything else. it cost $3 a pound. we don't get that we might as well tie up. >> it's their right to strike for more money. it cost money to run the boats but it's a bad week for everyone

electric grid by getting into a facility in vermont. a code was discovered within the system associated with russian hackers. the code was not used to disrupt any operations. they're really not sure what the russians were planning to do. but american officials now are warning that the breach shows just how much at risk our power grid is and the dangerous a disruption could have on medical and emergency services. meantime the obama administration carrying out a sanctions for e-mail hacking for trying to influence the presidential election. that's all part of the sanctions two facilities used by americans. the white house says it believes the facilities were being used by russians and intelligence activities. and 11 reduction diplomats have another day to return after they were kicked out in san francisco. 11 staffers along with three children all in scramble mode

welcome back. new from overnight a pennsylvania state trooper shot and killed in the line of duty. >> gunned down while responding to a report of an abuse suspect violating a protection order. celebrating his first anniversary with the pennsylvania state police. about 90 minutes ago authorities announced that the suspect 32-year-old jason robinson was killeded. the circumstances around his death are unclear at this time. trooper weaver was called to the home of robinson's mother in central pennsylvania last night. authorities aren't saying much about what happened. we do know there was some type of confrontation and robinson opened fire. police spent hours overnight looking for him. and once again pennsylvania authorities announcing this morning that the suspect is now dead. well i took most of the day and into the night 21 people were finally rescued from an

amusement ride that malfunctioned at knott's barry farm. the ride broke down at 2:00 yesterday afternoon. all stuck on the sky cabin ride. the theme park was unable to lower it. about eight hours later the riders finally brought down one by one. the young lady being brought down now using a rope and harness system. one man describing the reaction of his kids when they safely reached the ground. >> my two daughters came down and the 8-year-old girl was crying. >> can only imagine seven of the people trapped were kids. there were no reported injuries. knott's barry farm says each of its rides are carefully inspected. that sky cabin ride will remain closed. sad story here in northeast ohio the search has been called off for a missing plane with six people on board. searchers have been looking for the aircraft in the water and in
