you survived. we did last night. happy new year, everyone. we hope you had a good night and we are going to keep the party going with a look at some of the celebrations around the bay area. san francisco, 200,000 jamming the waterfront to ring in the new year. this is what it looks like from our favorite cam. the fireworks are lighting up the night sky. police were out in force last night. there were no reports of any
major problems.>>[cheering]>> this is what it looked like down in las vegas last night. this is from the mgm grand. several casinos along the vegas strip set off fireworks to ring in 2017. an estimated 300,000 people were there to watch. and the niners and the seahawks today. it's what's -- it is what can happen after the game that's the story. chip kelly could be let go right after the game. if not, perhaps tomorrow. the team is finishing up the worst season in franchise history. attendance has been awful this year. if that happens, the new coach will become the fourth new coach in the last four years since jim harbaugh left. >> also in the news, the chilly
weather. we're getting ready for more of it. temperatures in the bay area are dropping for the next couple of days. we can blame this gal behind me, the weather gal extract we are starting off 2017 on a very cold note and a wet one. wintry weather as we move through the first week of your 2017. were getting a look at the temperatures. it cooled off overnight. we are looking at cloudy skies in some places and even some drizzle reported in some areas. the first system that will bring us colder air is on the way. we are getting a look at the oakland estuary. were looking at a lot of cloud cover this morning. officials in santa clara county have issued an increment weather alert through thursday
morning. they are increasing the number of beds at the shelter to 180. the beds are available on a first-come first of basis. temperatures are expected to be in the 30s and 40s in that area and they will continue to fall. i have -- i will have a look at what you can expect. 36 in santa rosa. temperatures above freezing over the east bay. 34, brentwood. 47, san francisco, 44, mountain view. our temperatures are up a little bit because of the cloud cover. we are also dealing with fog. low visibility around the north bay. highway 101 down to petaluma you will find thick fog down to about one quarter mile visibility in some area. take it easy if you have an early morning drive. here is a look at the next system that's dropping in as we speak. this will move through and bring a scattered showers as we get into the evening hours. we will remain dry sunday
afternoon. as we get into the noontime we are dry and partly cloudy skies. by 5:00, things will start to change. there is a scattered showers activity there. tonight and tomorrow scattered charter bus tethered showers. cold temperatures as well. when i come back we will have a look at the afternoon highs. in the extended forecast, more wet weather coming our way. more on this in a bit. strike three people were hurt when a car crashed into a homeless camp at 1:30 this morning on 27th street. here's more on that. >> it started with the speeding car on interstate 980 in oakland. when chp tried to pull the driver over, the driver hit the gas and exited around 27th street and drove recklessly before crashing into a sidewalk were several people were sleeping in their tents>> we
have several tents here on the sidewalk with various homeless people. they were hit by the car. it looks like it overturned at least one time and landed on it and. luckily no one was killed>> one person who had been sleeping in the tent suffered a broken leg. after the crash the driver tried to take off running but officers were able to stop and arrest him. two other passengers in the car were taken into custody. is not known yet whether drugs or alcohol were factors in this crash. officers did not know why the driver sped up in the first place instead of pulling over. the car was not stolen but officers are checking to see if there were any outstanding warrants. we are hoping to get updates later and we will check with you guys that. also new from overnight, antioch police are investigating a deadly new
year's eve shooting that happened late last night at an apartment complex on sycamore drive. one man was killed and another person was wounded. when neighbor was celebrating the holiday when she heard the gunshots. >> we were just having fun and we open the door to tell him to get away because we have little kids and there was blood all over the floor. we slammed the door and everyone hit the floor and we call the police>> there is no suspect information at this point. investigators have not said what may have led up to that deadly gunfire sheriffs are searching for a young couple who failed to return from a christmas weekend trip to big sur. the 20-year-old and 21-year-old left north hollywood on december 23. they were supposed to come home from big sur on christmas day but never did. investigators say the couple was traveling in a honda civic. 5v ud 925.
>> a vigil will be held to honor the life of officer grant. the 22-year-old was shot and killed back on january 1. he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and served 11 months in jail. today's vigil starts at noon at the station and everyone is asked to wear white. the 49ers planning some sweeping changes following the worst season in their franchise history. espn reporting that both the head coach chip kelly and general manager will be fired today, perhaps tomorrow. the official word comes this afternoon after the niners host the seattle seahawks at levi stadium. 49ers two and 13 during kelly's first and only year with the 49ers. he still has three years left on his contract. he has been with the front office since 2005.
the 49ers 136 games and appeared in the super bowl during balconies first three season as a general manager. their head coach was jim harbaugh who is long gone. the 49ers have one only seven games so far in the past two seasons. fans have stayed away from levi stadium. lots of empty seats this year. lots of people have blamed balconies draft choices as a major factor in the teams recent failures. the sports department did a poll to see how fans felt about the expected firings. we track 671 votes on our twitter page. the overwhelming votes felt that both of them should be fired. shock new year's eve has come and gone but the chp has cracked down on holiday drug drivers. that continues all day today into tomorrow morning. officers want drivers to know that they will be out in force until midnight looking for anyone who has had too much to
drink. this maximum enforcement period includes more officers patrolling california highways as well as an increase in drunk driving checkpoints. >> the new year means we will be paying more for transit service. is gone up from $86-$91. discount monthly passes for people with disabilities are increasing to $36. fairs have increased to $2.50. discount cash there is also being gone up to $1.25. starting tomorrow people cup parking and daily spots without paying will face a $55 fine. that is $20 more than the current fines. the penalty is increasing for those parked illegally in spaces for permits. there will face a $75 fine which is up from $40. report offenders will pay an even heavier prize.
those who rack up five to nine citations basin additional $100 penalty. 10 or more tickets, and exit $150. >> a terrorist attack in turkey as a gunman opened fire inside a crowded nightclub that left dozens of people dead. coming up, the search for the shooter and the unusual outfit the gunman was wearing during the attack. we take a look back at the tumultuous 2016. what americans hope for in the new year. shock the new year's resolution for the country is to have peace and harmony and have some transparency and have everyone come together. is not about democrats and republicans. it's about us as a people taking care of us first and others next.

best 2016 had to offer was the dad dance. many people are looking to 2017 for more positivity >> i am looking forward to yoga. i am looking to basketball, ping-pong, backgammon, and dancing like crazy. >> reporter: and an overall improvement over 2017. >> i'd like to have a better life.>> don't we all.>> leap into a seven-year-old to sum it all up. new year's resolutions? >> i just need to be more present. my mind is always spinning out. sometimes you've just got to enjoy the moment. right now, i am so glad i'm here. i'm over it [laughter]>> i normally don't make resolutions. i can keep them. i am definitely dedicated to doing more yoga this year. it will be beneficial.
>> i did that yesterday and i can't walk today.>> how about you quite >> i don't make resolutions either. i make short-term goals instead of big long goals. i did make some granola this morning. i will try to eat healthier and feel better.>> i saw two glazed donuts on your desk. >> i went for a run yesterday and i'm going for a hike today. >> you're setting the bar high. it's day one. >> i can't do yoga.>> neither can i, but i do it anyway. >> how are we doing weatherwise quite >> it is a cold one out there. actually a tad warmer because of the cloud cover. but with that cloud cover in place, it depends on how long it sticks around. we could see temperatures fall off again. we are into a cooler pattern.
this afternoon and a couple days ahead will be chilly in some spots and i will explain after we take a look at that gorgeous shot with a mix of clear skies and clouds this morning. here is a look at stormtracker 2. we're looking at a few systems coming our way. the first on friday. there's one that will bring us even colder air and drop our snow levels down to perhaps 1000 feet on monday. maybe some of our local hills will pick up a little bit of snow. we will continue to track it for you. there's not a whole lot of moisture in place. enough to bring a scattered showers. here's a look at the system this morning. by tomorrow morning it is well over northern california. we will start to see scattered showers through the bay area in late afternoon and early evening. monday will be the better chance and the colder air. on tuesday we begin to see another system begin to move into northern california. we are now into wednesday.
more rain. how about thursday? wow we could have what we coming our way. it looks like the start of january could be with several rounds of rain in the forecast. here's a look at our temperatures this morning. santa rosa, 36. patchy dense fog. be careful out there. 42, napa. 39, novato. 40s to low 50s around the bay. 50, oakland. 48, half moon bay. these temperatures falling off from yesterday. yesterday mid to upper 50s is what we had. low 50s in your forecast for the afternoon. 52, hayward. north bay, 53. san jose, 53. antioch is struggling with the temperature of 50 for the afternoon high.
call today but even colder for tomorrow. we are looking at temperatures the bottom out in the upper 40s. scattered showers in the forecasts and maybe a bit of snow as well. as we get into tuesday, temperatures rebound some. wednesday and thursday definitely coming up with warmer storms approaching. you see a lot of cloud cover in the forecast and a lot of rain on those icons. >> did you say the snow level maybe 1000 feet quite >> yes. >> anything in the 20s. cold. >> we are going to send you to hawaii>> i like that idea. can we make that happen? >> the time now is 7:20. several new state laws are in effect. it is illegal for gun buyers to own magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. they can still be sold to a licensed dealer. buyers will have to undergo up back karen -- undergo a
background check. law enforcement officers are required to follow the same rules as civilians when it comes to how they store their handguns. the weapon will have to be in blocks. if it is left in the vehicle, the handgun must be kept in the trunk. this law was created after several guns were stolen. strack the brock turner sexual assault case prompted changes for a new law. anyone conducted that's convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious person will be an eligible for probation and face mandatory prison time. turner is the former standards member convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman during a party on campus. turner serve just three months in jail. the new law broadens the definition to include all forms of sex without consent.

college football, they've got it right. it will be number one against number two for the national title next week as both alabama and clinton road to easy victories yesterday. we will begin with the fiesta bowl. number two clemson. the shawn watson up top. he's going to go for 26 yards. that will set up a one yard keeper for the touchdown. clemson goes up by a score of 10-0. here they come again. 30 yards. the buckeyes are shut out. a national semi game -- semi final game. they will play alabama for the
title. they are taking on washington and this is the peach bowl. washington took the early lead. for a moment husky fans were thinking that we could do it. but no you can't. the next two dozen he takes a turn and he is gone. alabama goes up 16-7 at the break. they broke a few tackles. he is off to the races. 68 yards for his second touchdown. 24-7, alabama. so clemson and alabama will go for it one week from monday night. >> the oakland raiders took the broncos. it will be broncos head coach gary kubiak's final game. he announced he is stepping down after today's game due to

temperatures in the upper 40s, low 50s for the afternoon tomorrow. we will see some interesting weather tomorrow and maybe a few scattered showers to go with it. let's take a look at let's -- a what's going on. a little bit of drizzle. mostly clear view over mount diablo this morning. we do have cooler weather in the forecast. rainy weather in the forecast. in fact, the first week of january looks like it could be quite wet outside we have partly cloudy skies and mostly cloudy in some spots. fog in portions of the north bay and visibility down to a quarter mile for a stretch along highway 101 from the airport all the way down into novato and petaluma. this is going to be a hazardous drive at times so please be careful. if you have an early morning drive on 101, be careful.
this is today's system. we will be dry for most of the afternoon. a chance for showers will be partly cloudy for the afternoon. at 1:00 the rain is to the north of us. by 5:00 it will skirt the coast. light rain and drizzle. as we get into the evening hours it will continue to move in with monday being a better chance at seeing scattered showers and snow levels will be dropping to 1000 feet. it's going to be cold. 36, santa rosa. 47, walnut creek. upper 40s or 50s around the bay at this time. low 50s in the forecast for the afternoon highs. continuing to fall as we get back to work on monday. i will have a look at what you can expect coming up to extract police in turkey are searching for the gunman who opened fire inside a crowded nightclub.
at least 30 people were killed and 69 others were wounded. authorities are calling it a terror attack. the gunman was wearing a santa claus costume when he shot two people outside the club including a policeman. he opened fire on the people on the inside. as many as 600 people were inside at the time. no one has claimed responsibility for the attack. president obama is condemning the attack. the president express condolences to the innocent lives lost and directed his team to offer hope to the turkish authorities as necessary and keep them updated as warranted. the president is vacationing in hawaii this week with his family extract the leader of north korea says his country is making final he made the announcement during his annual new year's day speech. a test would move the steps closer to achieving his long
goal. you want to have a nuclear warhead capable of breaching the west coast of the united states. donald trump and his wife are bringing in the new year at their private club in palm beach. the president-elect took some questions from the media last night. one topic was russia's involvement and hacking over the election. >> i think it's unfair and i know a lot about hacking. hacking is a hard thing to prove. it could be somebody else. i also know things that other people don't know. they cannot be sure about the situation.>> trump was sure to make a point that us intelligence gathering is not perfect bringing up examples like weapons of mass destruction in iraq that did not exist. his new year's resolution is a familiar phrase. take america great again. his inauguration happens in 18 days. >> pope francis benny new
year's day sending a message of hope for 2017. we will take you out live to st. peter's square. the pope told the crowd of 50,000. the pope told the crowd of 50,002 say no to the hate and yes to brotherhood and reconciliation. he expressed sorrow for the terror attack on the nightclub in his temple, turkey. he is praying for the victims. in the vatican city yesterday pope francis led a new year's eve mass. he called on the faithful to help young people find their purpose in the world. after the mass he walked through the square and greeted thousands of people who gathered for the last service of 2016 extract with consumer confidence high, not a lot of people are worried about their jobs right now. we talked to a labor expert to find out where the job market is right now on what we can expect in the new year.>> a
longtime labor lawyer in director of the employment development department in the first jerry brown administration when people thought of as the employment office as opposed to today's job resource, training and unemployment insurance delivery system. the year began with 16.2 million payroll jobs in california. we have added 330 new jobs putting our total at 16.6 million. since the recession ended in 2010, california has gained 2.5 million jobs. last year we were at 5.9% unemployment. today it is 5.3. we are on a near record role. >> we are in our 81st month of employment expansion since 2010. this is one of the longest employment expansions in california since world war ii. there is nothing on the horizon
. >> the big categories getting the most job include business services such as accounting and human resources. construction and leisure and hospitality posted big gains. >> our manufacturing sector that is often said to be dead in california, we still have 1.25 million jobs. it is still a healthy sector.>> reporter: with 4.6% unemployment nation while, there is enough people to fill the millions of new products -- jobs that trump promises quick >> there is no question we do. we have the training capacity between the workforce and the community colleges and other groups. >> reporter: many of our new jobs are part-time, project- based or pick up kids without any real benefits or 40 hour per work employment. if and when more permanent jobs arise, many in those less than traditional job situations will find full-time positions with
better pay. >> we are beginning to already see that. bridges will go up and i think there is no question that as the labor market gets tighter, we will see wages driven up. >> automation is killing some jobs but if -- technology follows is traditional path it will lead to more, newer and better jobs in the future. ktvu fox2 . new from overnight, several people in a homeless camp start out the new year stay in the hospital after a car crashed onto the sidewalks. we are live with what we know and what we know about that crash. >> reporter: it started with the driver speeding on interstate 980 and oakland. the chp tried to pull that driver over and the driver exited the freeway near 27th. the driver sped off the freeway and hit the gas.
the chp says that driver crashed onto the sidewalk here. one person sleeping in one of these tense that you see suffered a broken leg. two other people with back pain and went to the hospital. after the crash the driver tried to take off running chp offers were able to stop and arrest him. two other passengers were taken into custody.>> we have several tents here on the sidewalks for various homeless people. they were hit by the car. it looks like the car hit the sidewalk and overturned. luckily no one was killed. >> it's not known whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. officers did not know why the driver sped off in the first place.
the car did not turn up stolen. officers are checking as of this morning to see if anyone in the vehicle had any outstanding warrants. no update on that just yet. we are hoping to speak with the chp later this morning but for now the chp is saying we are lucky no one was killed. this is under interstate 980 and oakland. some people are up and we have had a chance to talk briefly to a couple of the people staying here. went gentlemen says they heard the car coming and speeding by before it crashed into one of these tense. later on, we're hoping to speak to some of the people to find out what they saw and heard. back to you guys. >> looking at what's behind you, they are lucky that there were no fatalities there. >> exactly. and that is what the chp officers said. this could've been much worse. extract starting today the minimum wage goes up in the three bay areas. in san jose, $10.50.
$12 an hour and will eventually be raised to $15 per hour by 2019. oakland's minimum wage will go up to $12.86. richmond's bow raised to $12.30.>> the nuggets are going into 27 with the best record of the mba. they have 129 and lost just 5. the head coach is happy about what his team has accomplished. >> it was an amazing year for the warriors. we didn't finish it off like we wanted to obviously, but we accomplished some things that we've never done before. 73 win season. this is a great area -- era for

right for most of today. we are looking at a cooler week ahead. monday there are showers in the forecast. to stay looks just as wet and perhaps just as cold. i will show you that in the extended forecast. here is a look at the future cast model. the first week of january will be quite wet even turning more wet in the second part of the week. sunday morning, here's that system we just looked at on the radar. by monday morning at spider in. we will see a few scattered showers even though it's not being picked up on this particular model. tuesday morning there is a nexus him coming in. tuesday could be wetter than what we have seen over the last few days. wednesday there is more. thursday there is more. friday, the weekend perhaps there is more. do not toss that umbrella away. 48, san francisco. 47, walnut creek. north bay, 36. santa rosa, 39.
nevada, 44. around the bay, not too bad. take a look at the afternoon highs. 52, oakland. 52, san francisco. if you go to the inner east bay, 50 degrees the afternoon high for antioch. were only going to about 50. temperatures dropping off a little bit more as we get into monday. the snow level down to 1000 feet. we are not looking at a lot of moisture and we could get snow on our local hells. temperatures rebound on tuesday and a little better on wednesday and thursday. we could have what days coming our way. >> all right. i will take it.>> 2017, we need rain. >> i hate to say we don't need the winter. we always still feel a we have learned from this drought that wet and rainy and snowy, we should be very happy.

one new law that hit the books today focuses on hands- free driving. it is illegal to hold your phone while you are driving. drivers will have to either stop using their phone or invest in a new device that mounted on the dashboard. >> i would like to sign to say hang up and drive. >> it is a message the chp has been touting for year. the new law makes it easier for police to ticket drivers for illegal cell phone use>> if we see it in your hand at all, or whether your looking at a map protecting a friend. if you're phone is in your hand, you are in violation of the law>> drivers can use cell phones of the you said hands- free's -- hands-free.>> you really should just drive.
you can think that hands-free you are good but your mind is somewhere else. >> the law also fixes a loophole with the hands-free cell phone law which bans talking and texting while driving. it did not address shooting or scanning video using snapchat which is another app. if you want to use apple now, be prepared for serious limitations>> you are allowed to do is push one button or swipe to answer a call>> heidi regulate and know the difference? it is a matter of touch and go. i guess that's what it's about. if it's about safety -- >> it will be tough to enforce. people will have it on their lap. >> reporter: this verizon store in alameda was already running low on mounting devices. >> we have a product called magic mount. it is more of an attachment that you put on your car vent.
>> we have the magnetic backs on the phone. it just holds that. it holds it up for the bumps and it's easier. both of my phones habit.>> reporter: phones must be mounted to the lower left or right of the windchill without obstructing the airbags. welcome to the new normal in california highlight -- highways. >> this device can save you hundreds of dollars in fines. the chp said there may be a grace period but don't depend on that. in alameda, ktvu fox2 news. also taking effect as a law requiring truck drivers to have breathalyzer devices installed in their car. the device requires the driver to pass in order for the car to start. the devices required for those who have been convicted of a dui. this extends a pilot program

oakland. that exit is interstate 980. around 1:30 the chp was trying to pull down the driver for speeding. the driver did not stop. the driver exited the freeway and continue to speed and lost control of the vehicle and crashed into this homeless and meant -- encampment behind me. one woman we spoke to said that the car actually ended up plowing into her tent and ended up on top of her basically. luckily she was extremely fortunate that she was not hurt. her tent is in shreds and some of her belongings are tossed around. there was an elderly man we are told who suffered a broken leg. another person complaining of back pain. they went to the hospital. after the crash, the driver tied -- try to take off running. the chp stopped and arrested the person. two passengers were also taken into custody. it is not known whether drugs and alcohol were factors. chp did not know why the driver
sped off in the first place. the car was not registered as stolen and officers are checking to see if there are any outstanding warrants. the chp and the folks who live here at this homeless encampment say it is extremely fortunate that no one was killed. this could have been a very horrible accident this morning. >> back to you guys. >> thank you for that information.>> new from overnight, police are investigating a deadly new year's eve shooting that happened late last night at an apartment complex on sycamore drive. one man was killed and another person was wounded. one person was celebrating when she heard all the -- heard the gunshots. >> we heard gunshots going off and we open the door and told him to get out of here because we have little kids inside.
we saw blood all over the floor. we slammed the door and everyone hit the floor and we call police. >> no suspect information to pass along. investigators have not said what led up to that deadly gunfire>> the sheriff's office is searching for a young couple from southern california who failed to return from a christmas we can trip to big sur. they left north hollywood on december 23. they were supposed to come back home on christmas day but never did. investigators say that couple was traveling in a four door honda civic. 5v ud 925 is the license plate number. a vigil will be held to honor the life of officer graham. he was shot and killed back in january 1, 2009. he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and served 11 months in jail>> today's vigil starts at noon. everyone is being asked to wear white. >> news for the 49ers.
report said they are planning some changes following one of the worst seasons in franchise history. several news agencies including espn are reporting that both a head coach and the general manager will be fired perhaps after today's game. the official word as we mentioned could come as early as this afternoon. the 49ers are hosting the seahawks at levi stadium. the 49ers, two and 13. he has three years left on his contract. baalke has been with the front office since 2005 and assumed the general management role and 2012. the 49ers health one only seven games so far in the past two seasons. fans have stayed away in droves at the stadium. a lot of empty seats. a lot of people blame the draft
