francisco's embarcadero tonight ushering in the new year hopefully with a big bang. when the clock strikes midnight fireworks will launch from the barges in the bay near the ferry building. weather should cooperate with the forecast and clear skies. wind which means fog will not block the view of the fireworks show. some of the best viewings might be along embarcadero and follow some. if you're in the city you won't miss out. people are being discouraged from going across the bridge to treasure island to view fireworks. parking in viewing areas is limited on the island because of several ongoing construction projects in the area and some roads and parking areas are now inaccessible. bart will be running on a special schedule tonight for new year's 've. a special schedule starts at 8:00 tonight and goes until 3:00 3:00 in the morning. passengers are being encouraged to do research because trains are skipping stations. trains headed into san francisco will not stop but the
embarcadero station south fremont and warm spring lines trains won't stop at the montgomery street station. after the fireworks passengers heading east are not going to be able to get off at west oakland oochlt muni offering free rides tonight, extra metro services will be rabl between west portal and 4th and king streets. bta also offering free rides tonight, there's extended service from 8:00 tonight to 5:00 tomorrow morning. free rides though come one night before vta fares increase. o fishes in san francisco are encoloneling everyone to sign up for emergency text alerts. there's the number on the bottom of your screen. all you have to do is text nyes f to 888777. the letters will notify subscribers of traffic alerts and disasters.
point race national seashore in marin county, some facilities have been closed because of the health and safety concerns. >> the family is good but not what we expected. kids were really excited for the lighthouse but they couldn't see it. >> not only that, dirty restrooms are creating a health hazard and approximate many are closed plus parking lots are closed at the light and north district operation center. park visitor cents are closed as well as the parking lot and trail head. many visitors say they are very disappointed. others are exploring the park on their own knowing services are limited. >> we made sure that we weren't relying on rangers for anything and we had our maps with us. >> totally irresponsible and very frustrating and i'm very angry about what's going on in washington. >> drake's beach also closed to par tis pregnant elephant seals and the public from aggressive male seals.

when he showed up to san francisco's glide memorial church. kelly is a man seen on video punching, robbing and eventually stopping another man on friday in the tender loin just a few steps away from the bart station. jenny chow captured the disturbing attack on her cell phone. >> the attacker was punching the victim and he was gagging him and throwing him to the floor. kicking him over roadway petitionedly. you can see that his face was swollen. . >> chow says people told her the argument started over a bluetooth speaker. the men were wrestling on the ground and witnesses tried to intervene. the man identified as kelly and stomped on that victim. >> if that weren't enough, the attacker even fished into his pockets and stole whatever money he had. >> kelly was hired as part of glide's community safety team for the holidays. employees became aware of the incident after seeing the video and cooperated with the
authorities oofrment a man who spent four days on the run after escaping from san quentin prison is back behind bars this morning. he was arrested on saturday at a taco bell. that's over 200 miles from san quentin prison. he was taken into custody without incident inside the restaurant by a task force. he had been on the run for four days. a witness says she recognized him from his distinctive tattoos on his face and neck i noticed gang task force come in and walked right up to him and told him he needed to come out of the booth. >> he walked away from a work crew last wednesday at san quentin. no one realized he was missing until an inmate head count was taken three and a half hours later. he car jacked a woman not far from the prison. family and friends preparing to honor the life of corporal singh later this week. 8 people in custody in

east bay. there's one thing to tell you about in the oakland area. this crash icon isn't popping up yet but northbound 880 just north of 16th street there's a crash blocking two left lanes. be aware of that and further north at jackson street, there's a stalled shuttle bus that you should be on the look out for. you can see the camera shaking here because of the high winds we're experiencing across the bay area and the chp has put out a wind advisory along with the wind advisory that rosemary mentioned. this is specifically for the high-rise at the san mateo bridge keep both hands firmly on the steering wheel. a look at highway 24. actually lighter than it was when we looked at this picture an hour ago. you can see the bart train in the middle of the screen there. bart running on its regular monday schedule this morning even though for many people they have it off as a holiday. .
new this morning, firefighters investigating an overnight fire at a home in the east bay. that fire broke out shortly before 3:30 at a garage. firefighters had the fire out in less than an hour. nobody was hurt but they said the garage was pretty full and now they're looking for a cause. california's attorney general says pg&e could face criminal charges including murder if investigators found reckless operation of its equipment to cause the deadly wildfires in the last two years. it does not say pg&e will be charged only that it is a possibility. the attorney who represents about 900 people who lost their homes in the camp fire in butte county in and around paradise say it would be unusual to pursue criminal charges against the company. >> the district attorney generally does not charge a company. the reason is because you can't
put the company in jail. . >> california department of force industry and fire protection is investigating pg&e in connection with the camp fire. pg&e reported an equipment malfunction at the time and located where the fire started. a stabbing victim recovering in the hospital this morning after being attacked in the tender loin. it happened yesterday between jones and taylor. police blocked off the area as officers helped treat the victim before paramedics arrived. a suspect was arrested after attempting to flee the area. police up in the north bay are searching for a group of men who robbed two at&t stores earlier in the month. images show the three men as they entered a location two weeks ago. one of them pulled a gun while ordering customers and employees to hand over phones and other belongs. police say the same men robbed another at&t store in santa rosa just hours earlier. anyone that might have
information is asked to give petaluma or the santa rosa police a call. fire crews are trying to determine what caused an abandoned building in oakland to catch fire for the second time in three weeks. the fire started at 10:00 yesterday morning. crews got the flames under control in 30 minutes. a fire in the same building the day before thanksgiving was reportedly started by people who are homeless. city of san francisco scaling back a plan that was meant to help out the taxi industry. the municipal agency afounsed a plan to only allow the 560 drivers using the newer permits to make pick ups. those permits are brought through the sath si for about a quarter of a million dollars. 900 other drivers couldn't pick up theirs at the airport under the new proposal but after push back, the agency will allow an additional 570 medallion holders to pick up passengers at sfo.
the plans will take effect on february 1st. in san francisco, former prison inmates getting the second chance at life while at the same time giving back to their community according to the chronicle, the public works department contracts with the hunters point family organization. they give jobs to former inmates who monitor public restrooms and serve as masters in the civic center area. the workers have also started staffing bart elevators and will be monitoring the restrooms at the city's main library. a theme park under fire for reportedly not catering to all of its visitors. during our 8:00 hour, why one family thinks there needs to be warning signs in other languages besides english at universal studios in orlando. a record setting day for the 49ers. the team left los angeles with a loss but a tight end headed into the record books, we'll tell you why.
happening today the stanford cardinal football team is making a bowl game of parents. they are off to pass pass, texas. stanford will be hooking up with pith and the 85th annual sun bowl, the second sun bowl appearance in three years for the cardinals playing without anywhere injured all-star running back. this will be the fourth appearance. happening today, kick off in a few hours from the red box bowl. it will be played between the oregon ducks and michigan state spartans. michigan state was 7 wins this season is a good challenge for the ducks who won 8 games, a game can be seen right here on ktvu news at 12:00.

for our hills the advisory lasts until tomorrow morning. high pressure parked over the pacific, a system moving through the pacific northwest and dropping on the back side of california is bringing the pressure gradient creating the wind so it's with us throughout tonight into our bay side communities and hills going until tuesday morning. north bay and east bay, wind gusts could reach to 60 miles per hour. around the bay later this morning and into the early part of the afternoon, gusts could reach to about 45 miles per hour. expires at 9:00. winds will begin to die down but i expect us to be breezy for the late night festivities and being outdoors is a brisk one. napa reporting wind gusts to 40 miles per hour. fairfield reporting gusts to 32. so we're just getting started. expect that to last throughout the day. with the winds going the temperatures are up but it's going to feel a whole lot chillier than what it reads because the wind chill factor.

amazon is adding more whole foods stores across the country t. amazon wants to put more customers within the two hour delivery range for governors. amazon purchased whole foods about a year and a half ago for $13 billion. workers have visited parts of idaho, utah and wyoming where the retailer currently has no stores. amazon hasn't confirmed any whole foods expansion plans yet. rent in san francisco still the highest in the country. research says san francisco has
the highest median rent in the nation, roughly around $3,500 for a one bedroom apartment and that's down lightly from 2017. rent in oakland, boston and la have gone up above 9% but not enough to surprise san francisco still about $1,000 higher. a new report shows home sales in the bay area were down 15% last month compared to this time last year. housing research firm core logic says november was the 6th month in a row to see a drop in sales across all of our nine bay area counties. also home prices are coming down. in june the median price at 875 $875,000 which was the highest ever recorded but by november the median house price dropped more than 6%. came down to 800. aqua man continues to dominate the box office over the weekend.

picture. no real traffic to tell you about. before the golden gate if you're headed southbound 101 there's a report of a stalled vehicle. time now is 8:04 let's go back to the desk. thousands of people will be on san francisco's embarcadero tonight to usher in the new year with a bang. when the clock strikes midnight fireworks will launch from barges near the ferry building and pier 14. the weather should cooperate with clear skies which means you won't have the fog blocking the view of fireworks. some of your best viewing spots might be along the embarcadero between follow some and mission. people are being discouraged from going to treasure island to watch the fireworks. the development authority says parking and viewing areas are limited because of several ongoing construction projects in the area. some roads and parking areas inaccessible. the highway patrol on the look out for anyone driving under the influence. the chp is continuing a max enforcement period that started
at 6:01 p.m. on friday lasting until 11:59 p.m. tomorrow night. that means all available officers are on duty. during the last new year's max enforcement period, 40 people died in collisions in california. bart will be running oen a holiday schedule tonight. passengers being encouraged to do research because trains will be skipping some stations. antioch and richmond trains heading into san francisco will not stop at the embarcadero station. dublin, pleasanton and south fremont trains will not stop at the montgomery street station. after the fireworks show, passengers heading east across the bay will not be able to get off at west oakland. muni is offering free roads tonight and additionally trains will be available between west portal and 4th and king. vta offering freeze rides tonight as well and there's extended service until 5:00 a.m. tomorrow. the free rides come one night
before vta fares increase on light ram and local bus routes. officials in san francisco are encouraging everyone to sign up for emergency text message alerts. just next nye sf to 888-777. the alerts will notify subscribers. a new report claims there were several warnings that could have prevented the filed fire tragedy in paradise. 84 people were killed and 13,000 homes destroyed in the camp fire. the city of paradise should have done more to prepare, claiming a report. national transportation planners say they should set a new bar for emergency planners in wildfire areas. cal kael attorney general says pg&e could face criminal
charges including murder if they find reckless operation of equipment caused deadly wildfires. the brief from the attorney general did not say pg&e will be chashged, only that it's a possibility. an attorney who represents about 900 people who lost their homes in the camp fire in and around paradise said it would be unusual to pursue criminal charges against a company. >> the district attorney or attorney general generally does not charge a company. the reason is because you can't put the company in jail. >> the california department of forestry and fire protection is investigating pg&e in connection with the camp fire. pg&e reported an equipment malfunction at the time and the location where the fire started. one of the democratic parties most prominent names is considering a run for president in 2020. >> that's the america i'm fighting for. that's why i'm watching an exploratory committee for
president. >> elizabeth warren posted a four and a half minute video on youtube. she arrived on the national political scene a decade ago during the financial crisis. since then she quickly became one of the party's more prominent liberals. day ten of a partial goment shut down and the five billion dollars president trump wants continues to be a stumbling block. the president has continued tweeting about the impact saying in part, i'm in the oval office and democrats come back from vacation now and give us the votes necessary for border security including the wall. republican senator lindsey graham met with the president at the white house yesterday and seemed optimistic about a compromise that may include help for daca recipients. >> it would go a long way to securing our border and if we could find a way to make sure
the daca recipients have a work permit, it certainly makes their lives better. >> the new congress convenes on thursday and it's expected the new house majority led by democrat nancy pelosi will pass legislation to end the government shut down. it still needs to go through the senate and get the president's signature. the government shut down is affecting some areas because of health and safety concerns. >> it's not what we expect. kids were excited for the lighthouse but they couldn't see it. >> dirty restrooms are creating a health hazard and many are closed and parking lots are closed at the lighthouse in north district operation center. park visitor centers are closed as well as the parking lot and trail head. many visitors are disappointed and others are exploring the park on their own knowing services are limited. >> we made sure that we not relying on rangers for anything.
>> totally irresponsible. very frustrating and i'm very angry about what's going on in washington. >> also drake's beach is closed to protect pregnant elephant seals and the public from aggressive male seals. the back floor country campgrounds remain open but reportedly no drinking water. staffers are seen pushing and dragging children. a male staffer pulled a boy into a room and slapping him and pushing him against a wall. the paper says another video shows a female staffer pushing a child through a conference room and then dragging the child into another room. as the partial government shut down continues, lawmakers are vowing to improve the immigration policy. republican senator lindsey graham is promising congress will look into the deaths of two migrant children in border patrol.
over the weekend the president tweeted about their deaths and blamed democrats. >> i don't like some of the democrats using these deaths as political pawns. >> isn't that what the president just did. >> the president does not want these children to come on this journey to begin with. >> homeland security secretary visited u.s. fills along the mexican border and promised new medical screening procedures for all child migrants. family and friends preparing to honor the life of corporal singh later this week. meanwhile seven people are in custody in connection with the death. seven others allegedly trying to help him flee were arrested. hundreds of people came out to candle light vigil over the weekend to honor corporal singh. >> his life matters and we're eternally grateful for what he did for us.

a cyber attack disrupted printing for several los angeles newspapers over the weekend. the baltimore sun and chicago tribune were among those targeted. the new york times also affected. the attack came from outside the united states. tribune publishing said it first detected the malware on friday and the company says there's no evidence the personal or financial information of customers was compromised. universal studios orlando resort is facing a lawsuit over the lack of warning signs for rides and languages other than english. the 38-year old's family filed a lawsuit and his family is from guatemala and says he suffered a heart attack in 2016 after riding the skull island ride. he had prior heart problems and

it's going to be colds tonight as well. the cold really can creep up on you. i asked the san francisco fire department what their biggest call is on new year's eve and what they respond to the most and they say they have to help a lot of people that are too cold. i may be harder to realize how cold it is if you're drink king so fire crews recommend bundling up. agencies are working together to make sure the celebrations in the city go smoothly but you can help too. >> we certainly look out for all hazards and so we support our police department and partners in doing that but the public can help as well. if you see something suspicious, call 911 or flag down a nearby police officer. >> another way to make sure you're prepared for the night is by registering for the alert sf texting code for new year's eve.
if you text nyesf to 888-777 you'll get a text to your phone if anything happens tonight in san francisco impacking the sill bragss. celebration. part service goes from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. there's places the trainwon't stop between when you're going to and from san francisco so be prepared and check that out so you make sure you have a ride home. in san francisco this morning, sara zendanom, ktvu news . firefighters investigating an overnight fire at a home in the east bay that broke out shortly before 3:30 in a garage on temple drive. the firefighters had the fire out in less than an hour. they said the garage was full at the time. investigators now working to determine a cause. the suspect in an attack in san francisco is now behind bars. police arrested the 25 year old mel ton kelly around 7:20 yesterday morning.
when he showed up to work at the church, kelly is the man scene on video punching, robbing and stomping on another man on friday steps from the powell street bart station. jenny captured the disturbing incident on her cell phone. >> the attacker was punching the victim and gagging him and throwing him to the floor and kicking him over repeatedly. you can see that his face was swollen. >> the argument started over a bluetooth speaker. the men were wrestling on the ground and some witnesses tried to intervene. . >> if that weren't enough, if he weren't near on the brink of death, the attacker fished into his pockets and stole whatever money he had. >> kelly was hired as part of glide's community safety team for if holidays. employees became aware of the incident after seeing the video and cooperating with authorities. a stabbing victim was
attacked in the tender loin yesterday after 11:00 in the morning on el farro between jones and taylor. police blocked off the area as officers helped treat the victim before pair med eks arrived. that victim in critical condition but expected to survive. the suspect was arrested after attempted to flee the area. in san francisco, former prison inmates getting a second chance at life while at the same time giving back to their community. add cording to the chronicle, the public works department contracts with the hunters point family organization to give jobs to former unmates. they monitor public restrooms and serve as ambassadors. the papers say hunters point family workers have also started staffing bart elevators and will soon be monitoring the restrooms. happening today, the stanford cardinal football team is making a bowl game appearance in pass pass, texas. stanford playing the pittsburgh panthers in the 85 annual sun bowl. the cardinals will be playing
without injured star running back bryce love. this will be pit's fourth appearance. also happening today, kick off a few hours away for the red box bowl out at levi stadium. will be played between the oregon ducks and the michigan state spar tan. michigan state will be a good challenge for the ducks who won 8 games this season. the game can be seen here on ktvu news at noon. you can watch the news at noon over on ktvu plus. the teams are set for the college football playoff national championship game, the alabama crimson tide taking on the clemson tigers at levi stadium on january 7th. the third time in four years these two teams have faced each other for the national championship. hope for a good game there. >> you can expect a lot of college football fans packing up and getting ready to head to santa clara. the extra flights added ahead of the upcoming national

suspected zui and 47 deaths due to traffic collisions. the message as claudine wong said over the new year's holiday, do not get behind the wheel if you're drinking driving. joining me now, what kind of things will you and your officers looking for tonight as we ring in the new year? just dui? >> no, we're looking not just for dui but also primary inclusion factors including speed, unsaef lane changes and distracted driving. if i'm doing 66 and it's 65, will it get pulled over? >> we're looking for excessive speeders people in and out of traffic, just going a high rate of speed. >> last new year's 2017 going into 2018 max enforcement saw
40 fatalities. two-thirds of those victims were not wearing seat belts. that's like almost 27 out of the 40 were not wearing seat belts. is the message getting through? >> obviously if we have that many people not wearing seat belts it's not getting through. i would say if you're the person inside the vehicle and you see someone not wearing a seat belt, speak up and let them know. drivers, you're responsible if someone is not wearing a seat belt in your vehicle you can be cited. >> front seat only? >> front and back. doesn't matter their age. if they're over 18 and not wearing a seat belt, the driver can stul get a ticket for it. >> even in the backseat? >> yes. >> glad i asked that question. >> if you're driving a vehicle, you're responsible for everyone in the vehicle. >> okay. hopefully the numbers come down this year. >> yes, we do hope that. >> that's why we're out here doing max enforcement and extra units on the roads watching for these things.

a woman that died after being attacked by a lion. this happened in an animal sanctuary in north carolina. the woman 22-year-old, alexander black was an intern. the attack happened when a keeper was cleaning out alliance enclosure. the animal escaped and made it past a locked area. the lion killed the woman quickly. they tried to tranquilize of the lien multiple times. they were unsuccessful and the line was shot and killed. travelers that were on it
