all except san jose are below average here. today and tomorrow will be below average and then we warm up a little bit, no big warm up except maybe friday and then back down for the weekend. a lot of 40s and low 50s. 51 in gilroy, 58 for boulder creek and upper 40s for cupertino. there is a little bite to the morning air along with a robust westerly breeze. there is a pretty good low in southern california, some of that rain is coming off the central and southern sierra going through the san joaquin valley. bakersfield has seen some rain and also towards phoenix today. another low may make an appearance later this week, hard to say. a little below average for temperatures today.
sal is telling us about the east bay commute. what's going on? >> we have slow traffic out there, typical day, highway 24. we start with highway 24 on the way from oakland or to oakland from walter creek. you can see that traffic is moderately heavy, not too bad but slowing in the area. 680 is slow from pleasant hill to walnut creek. highway 4 is slow through pittsburgh into concord. at the bay bridge, 20 to 25 minute bridge until the span n. no major issues driving through. 280 in san jose looks good up to highway 17. again, no problems in the south bay put it is getting busier. 7:02, let's go back to the desk. new this morning, the daly city police darm is investigating an arson. an overnight fire at an uber office building at daly city was reported at the office on john daily boulevard around 10:40
last night. we are in daly city with the newest information from police. >> reporter: good morning. the police department has just told us that 26-year-old casey mound was arrested for arson and you can see behind me the ash left over here after the fire was intentionally set last night. the department says they arrived to the uber office around 10:40 last night. they saw a small fire near the front door. it was quickly put out and did not cause much damage. officers found casey mound around the back of the building. he was arrested. the department says there is nothing to suggest that the uber building was a specific target. we spoke to a witness who said it happened moments before the fire. >> he was wearing a wig and the
flames went up. i didn't see his face or anything. >> reporter: this is an uber green light hub where drivers can learn about the app, get their cars inspected and activate the account. there is a state farms insurance office inside the building as well. the daly city police department is investigating this as an arson. it happened at the 26th. they say there is no threat to the public. we reached out to uber for a response and we have yet to hear back. sarah zendehnam, ktvu. the sheriff's department is expected to release the name of the man whose body was found in half moon bay yesterday morning. it was spotted near the rib carlton hotel. they are waiting to notify his family before his name is released. the past few weeks, there was a
student that drowned. his body has not been found. on thursday, a car was seen driving off a cliff on highway 1, about 11 miles north of the rip carlton . the driver of that car has not also be found. a meb is growing at people's park in berkeley in memory of one man killed. the friends of the man known as cal is dropping off notes at the table where he often played chess. one of the men he played against was steffen jefferson. police say he killed cal on friday after killing two people in oakland and san francisco earlier in the day. people who knew both men say they are stunned. >> it is crazy about stefon. he was one of us, you know what
i'm saying? >> jefferson is now accused of three separate killings. he is also facing charges relating to a shootout with sheriff's deputies in douglas county, nevada. one sergeant was wounded in the hand. jefferson surrendered. for now he is being held in nevada. investigators are still looking for a notive for all of the shootings. the city of vallejo is asking for the city to help improve police relations. it comes after the deadly killing of rap emccoy who was killed by police after falling asleep inside his car. it was the 15th deadly shooting by police officers since 2011. the mayor issued a statement saying having strength is knowing when to ask for help and that time is now. inmates in the glenn valley jail are preparing for the jail to be shut down. the sheriff is closing the jail as a cost cutting measure.
the jail is about half full. the inmates will be moved to the san moo reteo jail that holds more than 3,000 people. it is 7:07 now. a sexual assault at a frat house at uc berkeley is being investigated. police have not told us which fraternity may be involved. police say the houses of canon way and college avenue. the victim is a uc berkeley student. we have no information about a possible suspect so far. if you have any information, call berkeley police. the marin county sheriff's office has released a report on drone use. in four cases, officers were dealing with a suspect who was armed or believed to be armed. the sheriff's office acquired six drones last year . eight trained operators have been used them. they post quarterly reports on the drones use and are required to report to the faa on a monthly basis. still ahead, ranchers what

people were injured including the rabbi when a gunman entered insynagogue on saturday and started shooting. a member of the synagogue, also an army veteran steppeded in and chased the shooter who ran out. >> if i saved a life, it is as if i saved a million lives. i'm happy that i did that. >> police arrested 19-year-old john earnest in san diego. he may face hate crime charges as well as homicide charges. a major road in seattle row opened overnight after four people were killed when a construction kraen fell down on several cars. the crane fell saturday evening, killing two workers inside, two people in cars below. later today, the king county medical examiner is expected to tell us about all four people who were killed. seattle pacific university has confirmed one of the freshman
students, sara wong, died inside of her car. >> find the good in every day. don't take anything for granted. tell the people that you love that you love them as much as you can because you never know. >> the mother and young child who were hurt when that collapse occurred are back home recuperating. the man who was hospitalized is come pected to be released soon. time now is 7:12. all five men trapped in a cave in virginia are alive and well after being rescued. they entered the cave friday night. they were going to camp but became trapped and suffed from hypothermia. one man was able to escape and called 911. crews began a rescue operate around 10:30 yesterday morning and wrapped up around 6:00 last night. heavy rains in recent months created muddy conditions inside the cave. >> the normal ground penetration with the water going underground
does cause things to be slippery and muddy. getting muddy, getting wet, all of those things contribute to the hypothermia. authorities say the group ranged in ang from 34 to 59 and were not prepared for the conditions. one man was taken to the hospital. three men were able to climb out on their own. didn't take long, just a couple of seconds on saturday for two cooler towers to be demolished and come crashing down at somerset, massachusetts. it was part of the state's last coal fired power plant. it closed two years ago. the owners of the property plan to turn the site into a multiuse facility dedicated to supporting off shore wind farms. crews are installing meters on northbound on ramps on highway 101. the $7 million project includes
11 meters from censor avenue to sir francis drake boulevard in larks spur. the goal is to eliminate traffic jams on busy parts of 101. they are expected to go live sometime next year. by 2026, all lanes southbound on 101 for marin county ramps will be metered. time now is 7:14. sal, did you fix everything out there yet? >> yeah, i wouldn't say fixed but the commutes are not bad. southbound 101, to the golden gate bridge looks good to southern marin county. no major problems. there is some slowing in central san rafael coming from nevauto. the bay bridge is backed up to the maze and the metering lights are on. it's a busy commute unless you
are in the car pool lanes. slow traffic on the peninsula, red wood city approaching wipal avenue, there is slow traffic there because of a crash. southbound is slow but northbound with palo alto mixes in with slow traffic as well. 280 downtown looks all right. let's bring in steve. >> let's get right to it here. we have a few low clouds around. temperatures will be below average on the high side and the lows are cool too. they are about to get cooler. carlos is on the lee side of the sierra and said just planted the vegetables and now a freeze warning and maybe snow. 38 degrees, feels like fall rather than spring. that's true. it is 28 in truckee, reno is at 25. a system is dropping from the pacific northwest that will clip nevada and we will get the
breeze out of it. the lows on may 1 in reno, another 29 to 32. so if you are going up there, do not be shocked. they will rebound pretty fast but wednesday will be cool, well below average. low clouds, sunny and breezy for us. these are the forecasted highs and where they should be this time. only san jose is where they should be at 71 degrees. 40s and 50s, low 50s from livermore and tracey. 52 for berkeley, napa airport at 51, santa rosa is at 51. kensington is in there, oakland hills, only 48. mainly low 50s in the city. hopefully soon, san francisco will fix the software issue and we will get that fixed soon.
west southwest, travis, fairfield, 20 gusting to 33, that is extra hold on the hair spray out there. west southwest at oakland at 15. we will have a cool day for us after a record heat last tuesday and wednesday. a low moved into southern california and producing good rain for some off of the central sierra down to the san joaquin valley towards grape vine as well and towards sant ta maria and barbara. the possibility of some rain around l.a. but most of it on the high desert and towards las vegas and phoenix for a big cool down for them. after tuesday, we will get a little warm-up. there is a possibility of another low coming in this sunday. it may track a little northward which would put us in line. that system is clipping the sierra tomorrow,. that probably won't happen. watch towards sunday, don't

7:21. the attorney general is set to testify before two congressional committees this week but william barr may refuse one of the appearances. this could be a new round of partisan legal wrapgling. >> house democrats have a big hearing scheduled later this week but the big question is whether the attorney general will be there. william barr was in for a grilling this week but right now it looks like he may be a no show for what was looking like an exclusive appearance before
the house judiciary committee. they suddenly wanted staff attorneys, not just members of congress to question him about the mueller report. the doj says the attorney general agreed to appear before congress, therefore members of congress should be the ones doing the questions. he is happy to engage with members on their questions regarding the mueller report. democrats may respond with a subpoena, upping tensions between congress and the white house. with all of their hopes behind the collusion delusion. >> with allegations of russian collusion looking like a dead end, democrats are pursuing had the obstruction angle, accusing the president of interfering with the mueller investigation. >> we have prosecuted cases on far less evidence on this. and yet i believe if he were not the president of the united states, he would likely be indicted on obstruction. >> i can't think of anything that president trump did to stop mueller from doing his job. from my point of view, i've

not necessarily rain but steve is talking about some clouds. >> a big change from last week when we were starting a warm-up with record highs. not the case for today. it looks like the forecast model is checking time again. what we are talking about is this time, the cold air convection is gone and the jet stream is weaker. so the forecast models are showing more high pressure. but we are looking at a series of lows coming in. it is time to maybe check in on some of these as well. what that means is you take a look at our forecast model, the european and others. they tracked one into southern california which is producing rain. they are also picking one on the weekend and taking it to the north which puts it in our neck of the woods on sunday. that's what he is talking about here. 28 in truckee and 25 in reno. eureka airport now at 32. there will be a system that will

what? >> moderate. there are spots when the traffic has been afeathed by crashes. first of all, let's go to the bay bridge and show you westbound approach. westbound you can see traffic is backed up all the way to the maze. metering lights are on. it will be a tough one unless you have a car pool sticker. 880 northbound is going to be slow passing the coliseum. we have had a couple of things that have slowed things down. 10 # 1 accident cleared by marsh. it was right there but the traffic is slow from palo alto. the south bay commute is going to be okay. 7:31, let's go back to the desk. new this morning, the daly city police department says they arrested a 26-year-old man accused of intentionally setting an overnight fire at an uber office building in daly city. fire was reported around 10:40 last night at an uber avenue on
john dally boulevard. casey long was arrested near the scene. it doesn't appear the uber building was specifically targeted. the only damage to the building was a cracked front window. san francisco marin food bank says hunger in the bay area is still a real problem. the number of meals missed during the latest reported year is down from record levels we saw a few years ago. we are live at the food bank this morning on what could be helping and how many people are still without the food they need. >> reporter: the short answer is yes, things are trending in the right direction but we are still seeing way too many meals missed. 35 million meals missed for the last year that they were able to take the survey. we are joined by paul ash, executive director of the san francisco marin food bank. let's talk about what that means. when we talk about meals missed, who are we talking about it? >> meals that people can't afford for themselves that charities and government are not
providing. that's the gap of 35 million meals that we need to close. >> reporter: and we are talking all age ranges, adults from children, right? >> people in poverty, all of the demgraphics, from elderly to kids in the school. >> reporter: but there is something we can do about it, right? we are talking about what is going on in san francisco, starting to see the numbers rebound which is nice. we are seeing fewer meals missed than in years past but a lopg way to go. what it people do about it if they live around the bay area? >> we are doers in the bay area. this is an easy way to pitch in and be involved. you can give money to your local food bank. in our case, we are expanding the building to try to meet the gap so people can get involved in helping with the expansion. there are lots of ways to get involved. we have 4,000 people volunteer in this building last year.
the same thing is true at other food banks around the area. >> reporter: and we are talking about marin county but there is a need everywhere so if you can't help out here, help out where you are. we are talking about metallica making a big push to make sure people get out and volunteer. he is a rock star so we can't nail him down but last year, the drummer from metallica was here and he may well be here again this year on may 20. if you needed another incentive to come out help, maybe seeing a rock star up close will do it. but the need is great. if you can't help out in san francisco and marain county, help out in your home county. ktvu fox 2 news. >> thank you. time is 7:34. opening statements starment tomorrow in oakland in the ghostship warehouse fire trial. testimony may go on for three
months. the defendants derick almena and max harris are charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter for the 36 people who died in the fire. prosecutors say thal almena and harris are criminally responsible because warehouse guests and residents were endangered by a makeshift electrical system. defense lawyers say the warehouse owners and the oakland police and fire departments are responsible because they knew about the danger but did not take action. ktvu will have complete coverage of the trial. our investigative team will have reports about the fallout after the tragedy. it all begins tomorrow. one man is in jail accused of driving drunk and hitting and killing an elderly woman and her dog while crossing the street in sal maseno. 72-year-old carol alman was on a routine walk with her dogs on saturday night when she was hit. she and one of her dogs were pronounced dead on the scene. the other dog was taken to an
animal hospital. her longtime partner saw it all happen and collapsed before he was rushed to the hospital. neighbors want the city to install flashing lights or a speed bump on that street. ?a people drive way too fast. we have children that get dropped off here. >> the driver of the car is in the marin county jail on felony dui and vehiclular manslaughter charges. neighbors say he tried to hide before being taken into custody. time now is 7336, happening today, board members for the national rifle association will meet after the president said he will not serve a second term. the announcement of oliver north comes after a bitter fight with exec positive tim lapierre. he accused him of trying to drive him out of the organization. oliver north threatened to release damaging information
about labiair and the nra. a cathedral church will have a concert tonight in a show of solidarity with the notre dame cathedral in paris. it includes performances by the san francisco symphony, opera and others including the organist who was playing at notre dame at the time the fire started. investigators are looking into whether a short circuit or cigarette buds from construction workers may have started the fire earlier this month. it destroyed the building's spire and much of the roof. registration is required but the concert is free. seating is on a first come, first serve basis. the golden state warriors have the night off after beating the houston rockets in the first game of the western conference semi finals. the warriors had an early lead. the rockerts stormed back in the second quarter and the game was tied at halftime. in the second half it was this guy, kevin dur ant, one of the best in the league.

they lost 4-3. the series is now tied at one each and had heads to colorado for game three tomorrow night. the family of a little boy in walnut creek who has brain cancer overwhelmed by the love is support they are getting. omni fight club held an event to help the family of 4-year-old deacon. he has already had two surgeries and he may need a third one. his mom is a coach at the fight club. a raffle and doimations raised $5,000 to help the family. >> being able to turn our resources and to someone who has helped us grow our business is really special. >>. >> it is overwhelming what she has gotten from the support of this family and this fight club. >> it is like a great big hug. >> the pediatric cancer foundation will host another fund raiser to help deacon and his family this coming weekend.

expected to formally plead not guilty to charges of bribery and fraud related to the college admissions scandal. they said they didn't realize the $500,000 they paid to a college facilitator would be used to get their daughters into usc under falls pretenses. they are not required to appear in court today. attorney michael avenatti is due in court today where he will enter a plea in charges filed against him. he represented stormy daniels and he is accused of stealing millions from clients, cheating on his taxes and lying to investigators. he denies all charges and plans to plead not guilty. he is also facing charges in new york accused of extorting mike for $20 million. police in ohio say an 8-year-old boy is a real hero for saving himself and his sister during an attempted kidnapping. the kids were in the back of the car driven by their grandmother.
when the grandmother got out 24-year-old alveer sing got in and drove away. the 8-year-old boy managed to open one of the back doors. the sister tried to jump out but sing grabbed her by the hoodie. the boy pulled her out as he jumped out and they were both able to get out. the police were able to stop and arrest sing. children have minor injuries after a bounce house they were in was picked up by high winds. it happened near tulsa oklahoma. there were three children inside the bouncehouse. a parent was able to stop it after a few frightening moments. two children landed on the asphalt and one of the grass. >> don't let your kids get into a bounce house on a windy day ever. check and see if they anchored it to the ground. >> emergency responders at the

darn cold on tuesday into wednesday. there will be a system dropping in that could produce snow. 34 in truckee, a little chill there. look at the cold air plunging in. portland 47, boise at 38. that cold air is going to be sliding in. it will be on the western edge. we will get the breeze tomorrow. low clouds, breezy to window today, gusts out there. except for san jose's forecast, all of these others are below average on the forecasts highs for today. i don't see much of a change tomorrow except for the fog betting chewed up sooner as the system comes through. a few mid-50s now. a lot of 40s this morning. starting to rebound from some of those now. we had a few in the east bay but now all 50s. 51 in merinda. concord at 53, west southwest

reserve meets and investors will look for clues on policy and interest rates. the markets are pretty quiet ahead of that news. here is a look at the dow jones up a little bit to 26551. the s and p is up almost a quarter of a percent. the nasdaq gaining a quarter of a percent as well. there is a new report that says boeing deactivated a safety feature on the 737 max jets that had been standard laur eer models of the planes. southwest airlines was not told right away that the feature had win turned off. that feature signaled when sensors were receiving different information on the angle of the nose of the plain. the report said that boeing could turn the feature on again if the airline bought additional safety features. boeing has not said why it
turned off the alert system. marriott is planning to expand home rental business in an effort to take on airbnb and other home sharing companies. it could lead to the first major hotel chain to create a home rental mrrm. it followed a pilot program in europe. other big hotel chains are looking into the home rental business. the newest option on jaguars and land owners could soon be cryptocurrency. they have teamed up for a test of new technology. if everything goes as planned, drivers could earn crypt aucoins by allowing the car to automatically pass along information. right now it is testing data about road conditions including pot holes and congestion. the company says that coins could be redeemed for coffee, tolls and electric car charging. jaguar and land rover are not saying when the feature would be available. >> interesting. thanks. time now is 7:56, waiting

rafael bridge. it is slow as you may imagine. a normal commute but a little better than it has been. it is just slightly better driving across the san rafael. you can see the traffic is going to be slow on the east shore freeway getting out to the mcarthur maze. the bay bridge is improving a little bit. we had earlier problems that were cleared but that is why it was slow by about 15 minutes extra or so. 880 is beginning to get a little less congested. in the 8:00 hour, things are loosening up a little bit. still slow out there. the peninsula and south bay has been slow. 101 is slow from san jose to redwood city because of earlier issues. it is 8:02, let's go back to the desk. now this morning, a 26-year-old man is in custody after the daly city police say he set fire to an uber office building overnight. we are live at the scene in daly
city to bring us more. >> reporter: good morning. the suspect's name is casey long. the daly city police department says he is accused of doing the damage behind me at this uber building. there was a police officer out here about 45 minutes ago taking pictures for the investigation. we know that officers arrested the 26-year-old after they found him behind the building on john daboulevard. when officers got to the building last night before 11:00, they saw a small fire near the front door. the fire was put out quickly and there was not much damage. the fire did not spread inside. the pd says there is nothing to suggest that the uber building was a specific target. we spoke to a witness who explained what he saw before the fire. >> he put something down and run away. a few seconds later, the flames
went up in air. and by the time they got here, it had died out. >> reporter: this is an uber green light hub where drivers can activate their account. there is also a state farm insurance office inside the building. 26-year-old casey long was arrested. we reached out to uber for a response but have yet to hear back. sarah zendehnam, ktvu. a funeral service will be held today for a 60-year-old woman killed in the attack at a synagogue in southern california. >> in my own interpretation, lori took the bullet for all of us. she died to protect all of us. >> people at the synagogue in poway say lori kaye was known for her kindness.
she protected the rabbi who was injured along with another man and his niece. >> if i saved a life, i'm happy that i did that. >> 19-year-old john earnest of san diego was arrested. he could mace hate crime charges as well as momicide charges. the san mateo sheriff's office will release the name of a man whose body was found floating in the ocean around 11:15 yesterday morning. it was spotted near the ritz carlton hotel. the police are working to identify the man's family before releasing his name. several people have been found floating at sea. a student's body has not been found. a car was seen driving off of a
cliff north of the ritz cartten and that driver has also not by found. a man is accused of killing an elderly woman as she crossed the street. 72-year-old caroline alan was on a walk with her two dogs when she was hit. alan and one of her dogs were pronounced dead at the scene. the other dog was taken to the animal hospital. her longtime partner saw this happen and collapsed before he was transported to the hospital. residents say they want the city to install flashing lights or speed bumps on butterfield road where the collision occurred. >> people drive way too fast in this neighborhood. this street, we have children that get dropped off at this corner from school. >> police say the driver of the vehicle, 30-year-old james boswell is in the marin county jail charged with felony dui and
vehiclular manslaughter. authorities say he tried to hide before he was arrested. a memorial is growing in berkeley park for one of throw people killed by the same man in three cities unone day. friends of the man known as cal are leaving notes and flowers where he played chess at the park. one of the people he played against was known as stone, his real name is stefon jefferson. police say it was jefferson who killed cal after he killed two others, one in oakland and one in san francisco. people who knew both men say they are stunned. >> it was crazy about stefon, stone, he was one of us, you know? >> jefferson is now accused of three separate killings. he is also facing charges related to a shootout with a sheriff's deputies in nevada. he surrendered and is being held in nevada. investigators are still looking for a motive in all of the
shootings. a sexual assault at a fraternity house at uc berkeley is now being investigated. the house is located at channing way and college avenue. the victim is a student. we have no nfgz about a possible suspect. if you have any information about this alleged assault, call berkeley police. a well known greek restaurant is being repaired after a fire on saturday night. flames and smoke could be seen shooting through the roof of a two story building. customers and staff escaped but one firefighter suffered a foot injury. the fire started in the kitchen and was likely a grease fire. trapped for 47 hours, how a planned trip to a cave in virginia ended with a rescue mission and five men in the hospital. likely kicking his way to the hall of fame and now his retirement, more on the retirement of the longtime oak

former vice president and new presidential candidate joe biden is hitting the campaign trail today. he chose pittsburgh, pennsylvania for his first speech in the 2020 race. he is 76 years old. he announced his candidacy on thursday. he is holding a rally at the teamsters temple before union members who have been longtime supporters of biden and the democrating party. here at home, beto o'rourke was in the bay area over the weekend and is now in modesto over the weekend. he will be come one of the first 2020 candidates to meet with voters in the central valley. he made a stop in san francisco yesterday. several hundred people came out to show support for the former texas congressman. he had a town hall rally at the irish cultural center where he talked about the current political structure and his plan to achieve universal healthcare. >> it is not medicare for all. it is called medicare for

phil police in tennessee have arrested a man suspected of killing seven people including a 12-year-old girl. the victims were found in a wooded area not far from the kentucky border. michael cummings was arrested and shot by police but will survive. he had previous arrest records for aggravated arson, assault, domestic violence and evading arrest. an investigation is underway into a motive behind the killings. police in baltimore are looking for a man who shot and killed one man and injured seven others. he started shooting around two cookouts that were happening on
different sides of the streets. one man was pronounced dead on the scene. the police commissioner said the shooting appeareded to be targeted but did not discuss a motive. there were casings found on two separate locations and there kr50edz have been a second gunman. no arrests have been made. police in ohio are calling an 8-year-old boy a hero for saving himself and his sister for an attempted kidnapping caught on tape. the kids were in the back car of the seat that their grandmother was driving. she gets out and then a drive comes in to take the car. the little boy manages to open one of the doors. the man grabbed the girl by a hoodie but the little boy was able to pull the sister out of the car as they jump out and both were able to get away. the police stopped and arrested the man. a prosecutor has been subpoenas over her handling of
the jussie smollett case. kim foxx has to appear in a court after a judge filed a petition last week for a special prosecutor to investigate how the case was hanled. foxx's office was criticized for dropping all of the charges against the actor who was accused of faking a hate crime against himself in chicago. the first hearing is set for thursday. happening today, actress lori loughlin and her husband are expected to plead not guilty. they face charges of bribery and fraud related to the cloej admissions scandal. reportedly the two didn't realize that the money they paid to a college facilitator would be used to get their daughters into usc under falls pretenses. they could get up to 20 years if convicted. attorney avenatti is due in court in southern california today for charges against him. he is accused of stealing millions of dollars from clients, cheating on taxes and lying to investigators. avenatti denies all of the allegations and says on twitter
he plans to plead not guilty. he is also facing another charge of extortion in new york. the white house correspondence dinner was held over the weekend but was more subdued than in recent years. there were no comedians and few celebrities and for the second straight year, no president. the turn out had a mix of humor and history. the guests talked about presidential history of the years. the condance dinner has been held since 1921 to honor the work of journalists and celebrate the freedom of the press. instead of attending the dinner, president trump went to a rally in green bay wisconsin. he chrisicized the dinner and some of the 2020 democratic candidates. he labelled the entire group socialists. wisconsin will be a prime

scene. police say it does not appear that uber was targeted. the only damage to the building was a cracked window. opening statements start tomorrow in the oakland ghostship warehouse trial. the defendants max harris and derick almena face 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. prosecutors say they are criminally responsible for the fire because guests and residents were endangered by a makeshift electrical system. the defense lawyers say that the warehouse owners and oakland foyer are responsible because they knew about the danger and did not take action. we will have complete coverage of the trial. our investigative team will have reports about the falluate after the tragedy. it all begins tomorrow. a local food bank is shedding some light on the food problem and hoping that star power could help solve the problem. we are live where some of the
wealthiest counties do not have enough to eat. >> reporter: the latest report shows that san francisco and marin county missed around 35 million meals for some of the most economically disadvantaged people. the food bank is saying that there is a tremendous need in san francisco and marin county. the numbers are trending down from 2016. the drop attributed to the growth in the amount of food being provided to the bank and an overall deline in low income people living in the area. they are encouraged by the latest findings but 35 million missed meals is still too many. >> these are meals people can't
afford for themselves. the food bank and other charities are not providing and the government is not providing. that is the gap we need to close. >> reporter: the food bank also announced a construction project. the food bank is maxed out and they are adding 28,000 square feet to the building their are in here in san francisco and major renovations for the facility in marin county. both of the projects are scheduled to be wrapped up in 2021. at the same time, the food bank is relying on star power to end hunger working with the band metallica. they are urging people to donate and volunteer time at food banks across the country and here in san francisco. there is no guarantee where you will be a rock star if you come here on may 22nd, but we can tell you that last year, the
drummer for metallica was on hand to help out. even if you don't see a rock star, you are a rock star for helping out those who are hungry in the bay area. president trump says the quick thinking of a rabbi at the chabad of poway synagogue saved lives in a deadly shooting on saturday. the president spoke directly with the rabbi, a man he is calling brave. >> at least one killed and three injured at the chabad synagogue. 19-year-old john earnest is the suspect, facing multiple charges including hate crimes and homicide. president trump is praising worshipers and first responders whose quick thinking saved lives during the shooting, tweeting this morning, i give to the

>> reporter: investigators have found no connection between earnest and extremest groups. new this morning, a major thorough fare in seattle reopened after a crane collapsed on several cars killing four people. two workers inside were killed and two people in cars below were killed. the medical examiner is expected torelease information about all four killed later today. pacific university has already said that student sarawong died in her car. >> find the good in every day. don't take anything for granted. tell the people you love you love them as much as you can because you never know. >> the mother and young child hurt in the attack are at home recuperating. the man hospitalized is expected to be released soon. all five men trapped in a cave in virginia have been rescued. they are allev in well. they ranged in age from 34 to 59. they entered the cave on friday
night. they were going to camp but became trapped and started suffering from hypothermia and exhaustion. one man was able to escape and call 911. crews began rescuing around 10:30 in the morning and they finished by 6:00 last night. heavy rain created muddy conditions inside the cave. the men are being treated at area hospitals. san francisco's grace cathedral will have a concert tonight in a show of solidarity with notre dame cathedral. it includes frorm performances by the san francisco symphony and opera. investigateors are looking into whether an electrical short or cigarettes could have caused the fire at notre dame. the nra's president will not

business commission is against a proposed ban on e-cigarette sales. they argue it could hurt small businesses. it would ban the sales. the commission voted 6-1 last week against the ban. now the board of supervisors will be weighing in for the coming weeks. researchers say that tech workers who slept just 16 minutes less one night had a poorer sense of judgment and reduced productivity after a reduced amount of sleep. it also increases stress levels. sleep may only be one factor. less sleep was more noticeable on week days and less obvious on weekends. we get every second we can get in the overnight hours. >> 16 minutes sounds tiny but i guess every minute counts. force yourself to go to bed

user location, email accounts and browsing history. boeing deactivated a safety feature on the 737 max jets that had been standard on earlier models of the plane. the wall street journal reports that the customers were not told right away that the feature had been turned off. the feature signals when sensors were receiving information about the angle of the nose of the plane. boeing could turn the feature on again if the airline bought additional safety features according to the report. boeing has not said why it turned off the system. marriott is planning to expand their home rental business. the move could lead to marriott becomes the first leading hotel chain to create a home rental platform. it follows a pilot program started in europe. other big chains such as hilton and hyatt are looking into the
