hello 2016! las vegas welcomes the new year with a bang... a lot of bangs. good morning i'm dave hall. and i'm maria silva. welcome to fox5 news this morning. last night fireworks shot off from the rooftops of seven strip casinos... to help ring in the new year. and we were there in the thick of it all! these images were shot from atop mandalay bay, the palms and stratosphere. the eight minute fireworks show was choreographed to a special playlist as sprays of gold glittery fireworks danced across the night sky. thankfully, the

the big show went off without a hitch. an air quality advisory is in place through today as the smoke from last night's fireworks clears out. health officials say smoke and small dust particles from the fireworks displays can make conditions worse. so people with respiratory and other health conditions are being encouraged to stay inside. nate tannenbaum is in for cassandra jones. he joins us now with a quick look at your new year's day forecast. good morning nate-- it's going to be a mostly sunny start to the new year. . but don't expect that to last too long. the first full week of 2016 promises to bring two rounds of rain. we'll start to cloud up as early as

chances for scattered showers (with little or no accumulation) sunday night through monday, and possibly lingering into tuesday. look for the best chances for stronger rain throughout wednesday and thursday. it's a little early to pin down exactly how much rain will fall and exactly when, but the potent weather system that's out in the pacific now will definitely be arriving mid-week and sticking around for a few days. even when chances for rain die down, expect to see plenty of cloud cover. daytime highs will warm close to normal (low to mid 50s) while also rise from the the low 40s dead this morning, following a rollover crash on i-15. police say the vehicle was speeding before this happened, and later burst into flames. fox five's nick lagrange joins us live near i-15 and craig with details in the investigation. nick? dave and maria -- police had i-15 south closed here at the craig ramp for several hours

again, 2015 ended here with two more fatalties on a major las vegas highway. this was a single- vehicle crash. police say it happened just after ten o'clock thursday night. nevada highway patrol's -- chelsea stuenkel -- says she and another officer were in the area when they noticed the car on fire, lying on the shoulder embankment of the road. other witnesses tell police the car was speeding, lost control, crashed into the dividing wall, rolled across the travel lanes, and came to rest on the other side before bursting into flames. firefighters later found two people dead inside the vehicle. "unfortunately, we're ending the year not on a good note with two fatalities. obviously something that could've been prevented due to slowing down and possibly impairment, which we'll find out in the future." you heard chelsea stuenkel mention possible impairment there. that is something police are investigating. with this

year's eve, impairment is a real possibility. police say no other vehicles were hit in this crash. again, i-15 was closed at craig when this investigation started. right now...... we do not yet know the identities of the two killed. once we know more, we will let you know. dave and maria? u-s 95 at ann road was shut down for hours overnight after a wrong way driver triggered a multi-car crash. the first calls came in just after 11:30 last night. one of our editors actually came within inches of the driver near buffalo on the 95. troopers say the driver crashed into three cars at ann road, injuring a number of people. the wrong way driver was taken to the hospital for treatment. we're told the other victims suffered non-life

injuries. n-h-p says it suspects the wrong way driver was driving under the influence. police are releasing surveillance video from outside a 24-hour fitness, in hopes of finding a man's killer. on tuesday, a man was found dead inside his car outside the 24- hour fitness on rainbow and alta metro is looking for this vehicle in connection with that homicide. police say the two suspects who shot the victim were in this two door sedan, with a spoiler and non- tinted windows. if you have any information, call crimestoppers at 702-385-55-55. the local woman man accused of hitting and killing 95 at summerlin parkway in 2014... has pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge. lindona thompson admitted to throwing punches at gary adair junior in a hallway at the courthouse back on november 5th. yesterday, her attorney entered the no contest plea on her

thompson was fined 100-dollars and ordered to attend impulse control classes and to stay out of trouble for the next 90 days. police say kadar brown was the side of the road, when adair hit him with his car. adair has pleaded not guilty to felony reckless driving and driving influence charges. his trial is set to begin in march. in today's top stories, a new york man was arrested and charged with planning to attack a restaurant on new year's eve. 25-year-old emanuel lutchman received direction from an issi member overseas to attack partygoers as an initiation into the group. lutchman is attempting to provide material support to isis. years in prison if he's due in court next friday. munich, germany new year with a after recent terror threats. last night, police were tipped off by intelligence service that isis was planning to

to seven suicide bombers. authorities halted all service at the stations as a precaution. train service has since been restored. north korean leader kim jong un delivered his annual address overnight, saying he's ready for war if provoked by quote "invasive" outsiders. the controversial leader also talked about plans to strengthen north korea's economy and a willingness to restore peace on the korean peninsula. dozens of new nevada state laws go into effect today... including a controversial new education law. senate bill 302 allows parents to use taxpayer money to send their children to private school... it's being called the most ambitious school choice law in the country... there has been a lot of pushback to this law... including two lawsuits that are currently in the courts... assembly bill 162 requires police officers to wear body cameras... the law also makes the footage recorded on

other new laws going into effedct today are designed to curb the influence of lobbyists... and hemp... it can now be legally grown in nevada... for research purposes only. a lot of people left disneyland upset this morning... their big fireworks show had to be cancelled because of strong winds. one person writes... "happy new year's everyone... we're at disneyland and the fireworks didn't go off... l-o-l so awkward... waited for hours in the same spot." another tweeted... "came to disneyland specifically for midnight fireworks. stood for 2 hours waiting. did the countdown... no fireworks... great start to 2016..." final preparations are underway for the 127th annual rose parade in pasadena, california. and people are already getting lined up along the five-and-a-half mile parade route. this year officials are ramping up security to prepare for the growing crowd of 700-thousand. pasadena police

"we're enhancing technologies, so there'll be cameras that are up and down the parade route. those are monitored 24/7 by law enforcement officials. we have more than two dozen k-9 bomb detection dogs that will be out on patrol along the parade route and later on at the game, as well" the 127-th annual tournament of roses parade airs live at eight a-m this morning. the rose bowl, featuring a stanford versus iowa matchup, starts at 5 p-m on e-s-p-n. nevada's not the only state ringing in the new year with new laws. after the break.. the state that's becoming the first ever to raise the legal smoking age to 21.

moon pie drop... see how other cities celebrated 2016. in seattle... the space needle served as a perfect spot to watch some fireworks... more than 18- hundred individual fireworks were set off last night to usher in the new year. in the big apple, around a million people showed up to watch the big ball drop in times square. at the stroke of midnight an 11-thousand 875- pound waterford crystal ball dropped along with multi-colored confetti. we'll be right back.

hawaii is officially the first state in the nation to raise the legal smoking age to 21. the new law applies to both traditional and electronic cigarettes and goes into effect today. the goal is to keep young people from developing an unhealthy addiction to tobacco. the hawaii department of health says 95- percent of adult smokers in the u-s begin smoking before the age of 21. anyone under 21 who gets caught using tobacco will pay a 10-dollar fine for the first offense. the fines will go up if the violation is repeated. a ban on styrofoam containers goes into effect today in the district of columbia. the law passed in 20-14 as part of a set of

will also require businesses to use disposable dining products by 20-17. going forward, officials will be doing undercover checks to make sure businesses have removed the foam containers. it's a rough start to the new year for some living in missouri. many communities along the mississippi river are bracing for even more flooding today. jennifer gray reports.

meramec river basin, (mayor michael polizzi, fenton, missouri) "we've taken on more water in history ever that i'e known in our city. it is in places we've never had it before." flooding has submerged neighborhoods, schools, and shopping centers in the st. louis area ... including parts of interstates 70, 44 and 55. (tom blair, missouri department of transportation) "we are keeping back a couple feet of water from actually getting on i-55. unfortunately, that effort hasn't been totally fruitful. we do have some water, anywhere from six inches to almost a foot in a couple of deep spots." even some homes have been swept away by the sheer force the flood waters, and waters have breached a second wastewater treatment plant ... sending untreated waste into the meramec river the missouri red cross has opened shelters across the state and the governor has declared a state of emergency and activated the national guard as thousands are being evacuated (kelly northcutt) "it's kinda like a ghost town now. it's pretty scary, you can't imagine all the water just taking this whole town over." even as sunny weather moves in ... officials continue to plead with residents to be safe ... and heed their

and his partner alexander also rang in the new year as a married couple when they wed in front of a crowd of one million people. here at home... las vegs boulevard doubled as a wedding dance floor for a lucky bride and her groom. bill and christa cooper, from kentucky, danced their first dance to a frank sinatra tune as their family looked on. cooper says he proposed to his new bride a month ago in the eiffel tower at paris las vegas. and las vegas' newest resident was welcomed into the world at 12:04 this morning. the newborn baby boy weighed in at 6-and-a-half pounds and was 18-and-a-half inches long. his parents haven't revealed his name yet. the bouncing baby boy was born at mountain view hospital. a big congratulations to the lucky parents. a big thanks to all of you who helped

two people thursday night. it's a sad end to 2015.... ...one that police say could've been prevented. fox five's nick lagrange joins us live near i-15 and craig with how police say the crash happened. nick? dave and maria -- police had i-15 south closed here at the craig ramp for several hours last night. two people in the vehicle crash. police say it happened just after ten o'clock thursday night. nevada highway stuenkel -- says officer were in the area when car on fire, lying embankment of the road. other witnesses tell police the car was speeding, lost control, crashed into the dividing wall, rolled across the travel lanes, and came to side before flames. firefighters later found two the vehicle. "because the vehicle not recognizable, right now, where the vehicle was

see plates on the vehicle, right now." police say it's very fortunate no other vehicles were hit in this crash, as the car flailed across the entire roadway. police are investigating alcohol impairment as a contributing factor in the wreck. again, i-15 was closed at craig when this investigation started. right now...... we do not yet know the identities of the two killed. once we know more, we will let you know. an armed murder suspect was shot and killed by metro officers after they tried to arrest him. fox5's abby theodros reports on why they were looking for him in the first place.

encountered the man. they say the situation escalated when the man would not listen to their commands and approached them all while carrying a cell phone they thought was a gun. capt. matt mccarthy: because of the officers believed the suspect was wanted for attempted murder because this was a residential area and believed he was armed they shot and struck him several times. the suspect was pronounced dead on the scene. police have not yet released the man's identity or what brought him to las vegas - but police say they're still uncovering the details of this investigation. more details are expected in the coming days.>> no officers, agents or bystanders were injured in the shooting. police also tell us there is not threat to the public. 19 adults and 17 children are homeless after a devastating apartment fire near sunrise hospital. " i called around to

help you. what happened to helping people? we didn't ask to be put out by a fire. especially on new year's eve. " the fire broke out yesterday morning near maryland parkway and desert inn. it took firefighters at least three hours to put out the fire. people who live at the apartments are blaming squatters for starting the fire, but officials haven't confirmed that. luckily no one was hurt. and a firefighter was hurt in another fire yesterday. las vegas fire and rescue says a firefighter fell off a roof at a home near bonanza and maryland parkway. he was checked out by paramedics, and went back to work without a hospital visit. investigators say this fire started in the chimney area, and they believe squatters were staying in the home. a suspect is still on the run this morning after stabbing a homeowner. police say the victim came home early.. only to find the suspect in his home. this happened near craig and pecos. metro says the homeowner and intruder got into a fight. the homeowner

least three times in the torso. he was taken to the hospital, and police say his injuries aren't life-threatening. metro says the intruder ran off, and has not been caught. police arrested the man they say robbed a valley doctor's office. his accomplice was shot and he left her behind. metro says mario chism and veronica clay robbed an office on december 16th, near charleston and rancho. they say chism pistol-whipped the doctor, who was treating a patient at the time. an employee escaped, got a gun from his car, and came back to the office. police say he shot the two suspects, killing veronica clay. chism took off, and police say he was found with a gunshot wound to his foot. he's now facing several charges, including robbery and battery with the use of a deadly weapon. republican presidential candidate donald trump has this message about hillary clinton. trump says: "i think i'll be her worst nightmare, but we're going to find out. look, she

we're going to do the job and we're going to do some really special things. he appeared on fox news channel last night. he added, during his new year's eve celebration-- that he has a big lead and plans to keep it. the iowa caucuses and new hampshire primary are both about a month away. the lawsuit filed against caitlyn jenner after a deadly crash almost a year ago has been settled. jenner's lawyer says the case has now been settled and dismissed. she was hauling an off-road vehicle back on february 7th, when she rear- ended 2 cars, one of the women was killed when her car was pushed into the path of an oncoming hummer. the terms of the settlement were not made public. in more local news... people had a safe and fun time on the las vegas strip as they rang in the new year. metro's preliminary numbers show that there were eight arrest on the strip and two arrest on fremont street for infractions other than d-u-i. metro and nhp

many drunk driving arrests were made last night. the las vegas monorail is offering discounts on tickets in the new year. for the first time ever... the mass transit system will be open around the clock through january 2-nd. on new year's eve the monorail offered locals one-way tickets for just a buck. the r-t-c is offering free rides until nine this morning. locals and tourists are taking advantage of the service to get to and from the strip following the new year's celebrations. today... the r-t-c is operating on its sunday schedule, since there's less traffic. fireworks can spook your pets, so if yours got out last night, chances are its over at the lied animal shelter. the shelter takes in all pets that get lost in the las vegas area. henderson operates its own

if you live in the southeast valley, head there first. they recommend calling every two or three days to see if they've found your pet. another big celebration was held downtown on fremont street. crews worked hard overnight to get it all cleaned up! people had to pay 40 dollars and pass a security check to gain access to the celebration. more than a dozen live tribute bands performed. captain john "trapper" mcintyre on mash -- has died. he passed away thursday after suffering complications from pneumonia. in addition to mash he also starred in the n- b-c detective drama "city of angels" and the c-b-s sitcom "house calls." he was 82 years old. firefighters battled a massive fire in dubai...that engulfed a 63- story skyscraper. the fire broke out at a hotel near the world's tallest tower. becky anderson reports. tonight is your final chance to take in one of the valley's favorite christmas traditions. ethel m chocolates' cactus garden features more than a half a million lights. the garden will be lit from five to ten tonight. admission is free. time is running out to check out the largest drive-thru light display in the valley. " there were a lot of people at this goodwill on rainbow and warm springs on thurdsay. workers say the 31st is one of the busiest days of the year. many people have pitched in to help provide holiday meals to struggling families. three square food bank hopes people will continue to be generous throughout the year.

came within inches of the driver near buffalo on the 95. troopers say the driver crashed into three cars at ann road, injuring a number of people. the wrong way driver was taken to the hospital for treatment. we're told the other victims suffered non-life threatening injuries. n-h-p says it suspects the wrong way driver was driving under the influence. police are releasing surveillance video from outside a 24-hour fitness, in hopes of finding a man's killer. on tuesday, a man was found dead inside his car outside the 24- hour fitness on rainbow and alta metro is looking for this vehicle in connection with that homicide. police say the two suspects who shot the victim were in this two door sedan, with a spoiler and non- tinted windows. information, call crimestoppers at 702-385-55-55. the local woman who attacked the hitting and killing

parkway in 2014... has pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge. lindona thompson admitted to throwing punches at gary adair junior in a hallway at the courthouse back on november 5th. yesterday, her attorney entered the no contest plea on her behalf. thompson was fined 100-dollars and ordered to attend impulse control classes and to stay out of trouble for the next 90 days. police say kadar brown was changing a tire on the side of the road, when adair hit him with his car. adair has pleaded not guilty to felony reckless driving and driving under the influence charges. his trial is set to begin in march. in today's top stories, a new york man was arrested and charged with planning to attack a restaurant on new year's eve. authorities say 25-year-old emanuel lutchman received direction from an issi member overseas to attack partygoers as an initiation into the group. lutchman is charged with attempting to provide material support to isis. he faces up to 20 years in prison if

underway for the 127th annual tournament of roses parade in pasadena, california. and people are already lined up along the five- and-a-half mile parade route. this year officials are ramping up security to prepare for the growing crowd of 700-thousand. pasadena police will have the assistance of the f-b-i and homeland security, along with plenty of undercover officers in the crowd. police were called to assist in apprehending the suspect. two officers then arrived to the area of guilded crown court where they encountered the man. they say the situation escalated when the man would not listen to their commands and approached them all while carrying a cell phone they thought was a gun. capt. matt mccarthy: because of the officers believed the suspect was wanted for attempted murder because this was a residential area and believed he was armed they shot and struck him several times. the suspect was pronounced dead on the scene. police have not yet released the man's identity or what brought him to las vegas - but police uncovering the investigation. expected in the coming days.>> no officers, bystanders were injured in the shooting. police also tell us there is not threat to the public. 19 adults and 17

homeless after a devastating apartment fire near sunrise hospital. " i called around to so many hotels, no vacancy, no we can't help you. what happened to helping people? we didn't ask to be put out by a fire. especially on new year's eve. " the fire broke out yesterday morning near maryland parkway and desert inn. it took firefighters at least three hours to put out the fire. people who live at the apartments are blaming squatters for starting the fire, but officials haven't confirmed that. luckily no one was hurt. and a firefighter was hurt in another fire yesterday. las vegas fire and rescue says a firefighter fell off a roof at a home near bonanza and maryland parkway. he was checked out by paramedics, and went back to work without a hospital visit. investigators say this fire started in the chimney area, and they believe squatters were staying in the home. a suspect is still on the run this morning after stabbing a homeowner. police say the victim came home
