this is fox5 news at 10. local. las vegas. a metro police officer is on the wrong side of the law tonight. i'm christine maddela. i'm john huck. he was arrested for domestic battery by strangulation and first degree kidnapping.. fox5's elizabeth watts has more on the case. officer james burt arrested tuesday for very serious charges.. metro police wouldn't release any details.. but said he was arrested for domestic battery by strangulation and first degree kidnapping.. and booked into the clark county jail... hannah brook/safe nest it's very unfortunate because it shows that domestic violence can happen between anyone regardless of career choice or economic stature. hannah brook is with safe nest- the largest domestic violence shelter in nevada... she says police officers are held to a higher standard and while we don't have any details on the victim or what happened... brook says it's likely the abuse was going on for awhile... hannah brook/safe nest usually when it gets to this point where the police have been called to

quite awhile.. many times domestic violence will start with simple verbal abuse emotional abuse and that's something to look out for and it will eventually escalate. it's a crime of control. she says the strangulation charge is key... it used to be easy for abusers to plead down to misdemeanors with domestic abuse charges.. but new laws make that more difficult... and they face serving time. hannah brook/safe nest it forces the courts to really take a look and hold the perpetrator accountable for their actions transparent nevada shows last year officer burt made more than 130-thousand dollars in pay and benefits. metro says he has been relieved of duty without pay pending judicial and internal investigations.. burt has a 48 hour hearing scheduled for tomorrow morning at 7:30. if you or someone you know may be in an abusive relationship you're urged to contact safe nest for help right away. three motorcyclists have lost their lives in less than a week on valley roads.

happened in henderson. it happened around three p-m on lake mead near the 2-15 and 5-15. henderson police say the s-u-v tried to make a left turn... when it was struck by the biker. the rider was taken to sunrise hospital where he died. police say he was wearing a helmet. the s-u-v driver stayed on scene. police have not said if alcohol or drugs were a factor... but said speed on the rider's part and driver's failure to yield played a part in the crash. a suspect is wanted for stabbing his ex- girlfriend's male friend in downtown las vegas. according to police... it happened around six this morning at the "safari hotel" on fremont street near bruce. police say the man showed up at their room... and stabbed the victim several times. he was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. police do not have a description of the man. anyone with information should call police or crimestoppers 7-0-2-3-8-5-55-55. former clark county

will still run for north las vegas mayor... even after pleading "no contest" to a d-u-i charge. collins was arrested on a charge for driving impaired back in december... after a crash while leaving the n-f-r at the thomas and mack. today -- collins pleaded "no contest". he will have to pay a 685-dollar fine and complete d-u-i school... which he's already finished online. collins says this is a lesson learned... and it won't stop him from running for north las vegas mayor. "cant change history. i made a mistake. but im still tom collins. im still the man that goes out there and works hard for everybody. everyday." collins' attorney says his client did not receive any special treatment. they will put a motion to close the case out early... once the fine is paid. dozens of performers gave their opinions about the new fremont street ordinance implemented almost two mont ago. clark county commissioners invited buskers to give feedback at city hall. the city enforced new regulations november 16-th of last year.

pretty. this is fox5 news at 10. local. las vegas. just weeks were going to start collecting money for their kids education choice program... a judge puts a halt to the program. that program would have given five-thousand dollars per student for education costs. fox 5s cyndi lundeberg has judges decision... it puts us in a position where as a parent i have to make sacrifices spends nearly 20- a year sending her two kids to private school. samantha linares - i dont get to drive fancy cars or have fancy vacations i the school choice program passed last year would've given family's up to five-thousand dollars per education costs.

school system if we want our children to have the best educational experience that they can have that is what we were hoping for was a little break two lawsuits have been filed against the program. one suit in clarkecounty claims school choice is unconstitutional because it could use state money for religious purposes.... amy rose- legal director aclu nevada - because the voucher program uses public money and allows the money to go towards religious institution its a violation of the constitution the other lawsuit filed in carson city maintains it's illegal to take money from the public education system... it's estimated the clark county school district alone would be out more than 17- million dollars.... a judge sided monday in favor of the lawsuit. schnieder- another concern is it will take money from the public schools yes but i if we have students leave those classrooms and they take that money then the public schools will still have money..... but theyll also have fewer students so
