the young man accused of killing his own father. 22-year-old daron clanton was arrested monday. the police report says clanton shot his father "kevin clanton" because his father wanted to see his college transcripts. clanton couldn't produce those because he wasn't enrolled in school at the time. he told police that's when things escalated, he got scared and grabbed a gun. he says his father started walking toward him, so he fired all of the rounds in his chamber. clanton was arrested and booked into the henderson detention center. he's now facing a felony open murder charge. las vegas is playing a big role in the e ection this fall... unlv is hosting the final presidential debate. "nats of the band " the university is working with the l-v-c-v-a to get the community pumped up for the huge political event. a new logo for the debate was unveiled. its slogan will be "let freedom ring." governor brian sandoval and other state

"we have this final presidential debate. it really puts nevada on the map, puts unlv on the map. i can't wait to make that impression." the final presidential debate is set for october 19th at the thomas and mack. g-o-p candidates are in south carolina ahead of tonight's presidential debate. seven candidates will be on the main stage including ben carson, donald trump, senators ted cruz and marco rubio, governors chris christie and john kasich ( and former governor jeb bush. carly fiorina and rand paul have been bumped off the main stage. tonight's debate will be held at the north charleston coliseum and performing arts center in south carolina. you can watch the debate on fox business network. it's that time of year again. tax season is upon us! and there are some things you

you're going to be filing your taxes yourself. fox five's nick lagrange joins us live in the newsroom with what you should be doing to make sure you're protected this tax season. nick? dave and maria -- you were talking about the powerball earlier. the harsh reality is.... almost none of us are waking up to the millions this morning. so if you happen to be one of those who didn't win the lottery last night -- your tax return will be a very welcome consolation. the i-r-s will start accepting 2015 tax filings on january 19th. the agency expects to receive more than 150 individual returns -- 80% of those filed electronically. thieves love tax season, and they will try everything in their power to steal your tax return. so here are some things to look out for, and some tips for avoiding these scams. be leery of phone scams. the i-r-s says some will call you impersonating i-r-s agents threatening police arrest or deportation, if you don't give them your filing info. the i-r-s says they will never call to get this info. you will receive documentation, if

look out for fake charities. some will try to get you to donate to a fake charity with the incentive of a better tax return. and finally -- you need to be aware of who you are filing your return with. "we know criminals are really good at mimicking legitimate websites. so you always want to make sure you're on a legitimate website that is encrypted. you want to look at the top window. and you want it to say 'https'. that 's' stands for 'secure'. so every page should have 'https' in the very top window, so that site is secure, before entering any personal information into for those who taxes in order early, you have until april 18th this year to file them. that's a three-day extension from the normal april 15th deadline, which is due to 'emancipation day' celebrations in washington d-c this year. there are a lot of great online tax- filing services out there, that you know are legit. 'h and r block', 'turbo tax', you can even file on the i-r-s website. just be aware of who you are dealing with,

taxes this year -- a three-day extension over the usual april 15th deadline. the i-r-s expects 80% of tax filings to be done online, this year. so here are some things you need to avoid, to keep your tax filing and identity in tact. avoid 'phishing' scams. if you receive a strange-looking email from someone claiming to be the i-r-s, don't open it. if you do open it, don't give out any information. the i-r-s will not contact you in this way. if you use a tax professional for your return, make sure it's somebody you know and trust. return preparer fraud is something that does arise, and it hurts both the preparer and you. avoid 'too good to be true' tax incentives. some more shady tax preparers will try to convince you to run with so-called 'loopholes' in the tax return system. it's simply not worth the risk. and finally -- be extra vigilant when it comes to your accounts, this time of year. online accounts, their banking account, their insurance account, their health insurance claims and making sure that all that activity looks familiar to them." the i-r-s also says filing early puts you at an advantage. if you wait, it gives identity thieves more time to file fraudulent claims in your name, before you can file your own legitimately. stick to secure websites and reputable tax professionals, folow these tips, you'll be sure to get your return without any problems. dave and maria? police say the metro officer accused of beating his girlfriend and holding her against her will has a history of domestic violence. officer "james burt" was arrested monday night. police say officer burt and the victim got into an argument at their home. when she tried to leave, she says burt refused to let her go and proceeded to drag her from her car. the victim says burt then choked

when police interviewed officer burt, he denied the allegations. he later told police to quote, "throw the hooks on and take me to jail." metro says burt was arrested in 20-11 for another domestic violence related case. they say there were a lot of similarities to this most recent case. the clark county coroner says 37- year-old stacey palmer died in a rollover crash on summerlin parkway near rampart wednesday morning. n-h-p says she lost control of her car and drove onto the dirt shoulder before over-correcting, hitting the center median and veering off again to the right side of the road. troopers say she wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car. she died on the scene from her injuries. in international headlines, a series of attacks in jakarta, indonesia have killed at least two civilians and injured 20 others. five attackers were killed. initial reports say the attackers used grenades against a police station -- before engaging police in a fire fight. a starbucks

skyline building in the city's center was hit by another blast at the same time. no one has claimed responsibility so far. it's still unclear how many gunmen were involved and how many locations were hit. new video is released of the u-s sailors detained by iran after drifting into iranian waters. in the video, you can see the ten sailors aboard the iranian military vessel held at gunpoint with their hands behind their heads. the service members were taken into custody tuesday after drifting across the maritime border in the persian gulf. a navigation malfunction was to blame for the crossing. iranian state t-v aired video of one of the u.s. sailors apologizing for entering iranian waters. (sailor): "it was a mistake, it was our fault, and we apologize for our mistake" it is unclear from the video whether the sailor was speaking voluntarily. the u.s. has not yet said under what circumstances that statement was made.

a new ride sharing business is picking up passengers in las vegas. "get me" just joined uber and lyft which are already operating in the valley. the company opened in dallas last year as a delivery service. now they're picking up people. here's how the app works. you have two options... either get something delivered... or you can have someone pick you up. you then have the choice of a motorcycle, car, suv or limo coming to pick you up. rates start around five- dollars for a two mile trip. the limo option will set you back about 250-bucks. four nascar superstars burn rubber at the las vegas motor speedway to test out goodyear's new tires. the i-r-s will start accepting 2015 tax filings on january 19th. the agency expects to receive more than 150 individual returns -- 80% of those filed electronically. thieves love tax season, and they will try everything in their power to steal your tax return. so here are some things to look out for, and some tips for avoiding these scams. be leery of phone scams. the i-r-s says some will call you impersonating i-r-s agents threatening police arrest or deportation, if you don't give them your filing info. the i-r-s says they will never call to get this info. you will receive documentation, if such io nf needed. look out for fake charities. some will try to get you to donate to a fake charity with the incentive of a better tax return. and finally -- you need to be aware of who you are filing your return with. "we know criminals are really good at mimicking legitimate websites. so you always want to make sure you're on a legitimate website that is encrypted.

metro says burt was arrested in 20-11 for another domestic violence related case. they say there were a lot of similarities to this most recent case. the clark county coroner says 37- year-old stacey palmer died in a rollover crash on summerlin parkway near rampart wednesday morning. n-h-p says she lost control of her car and drove onto the dirt shoulder before over-correcting, hitting the center median and veering off again to the right side of the road. troopers say she wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car. she died on the scene from her injuries. a series of attacks in jakarta, indonesia have killed at least two civilians and injured 20 others. five attackers were killed. initial reports say the attackers used grenades against a police station -- before engaging police in a fire fight. coffee shop in the skyline building in the city center was hit by another blast at the same time. no one has claimed

it's still unclear how many gunmen were involved and how many locations were hit. new video is released of the u-s sailors detained by iran after drifting into iranian waters. in the video, you can see the ten sailors aboard the iranian military vessel held at gunpoint with their hands behind their heads. the service members were taken into custody tuesday after drifting across the maritime border in the persian gulf. a navigation malfunction was to blame for the crossing. iranian state t-v aired video of one of the u.s. sailors apologizing for entering iranian waters. (sailor): "it was a mistake, it was our fault, and we apologize for our mistake" it is unclear from the video whether the sailor was speaking voluntarily. the u.s. has not yet said under what circumstances that statement was made. iran's foreign minister is now calling on the u-s to apologize for what they say was the american navy's maritime encroachment. chipotle says its

four nascar superstars burn rubber at the las vegas motor speedway to test out goodyear's new tires. "nats of cars " vegas native kurt busch was one of the drivers on hand for the testing. busch says the speedway is the perfect track to perform these tests. "most importantly it's the weather, secondly it's a track where we only race once a year. so notes don't get as defined here. " busch says he hopes these tests will help him and his team consistantly finish higher in races this season. nascar weekend gets into high gear friday, march 4th with stratosphere pole day. the kobalt 400 is sunday, march 6th at the las vegas motor speedway.
