more than three years after the murder of 10 year old jade morris... the woman charged... admits to the killing. morris' body was found in december 2012... stabbed dozens of times. today brenda stoakes admitted to the killing... and as well as other crimes... fox 5s cyndi lundeberg is live outside the courthouse where stokes made that guilty plea. stokes plead guilty to a total of five charges today... including murder the young girl... and for slashing a coworkers face with razor blades... i spoke to jades grandmother... she was inside the courtroom... she tell me the pain of losing jade... never gets any easier. terrence- it has destroyed us it may have been three years since the murder of their grand daughter... 10 year old jade morris.... but the pain the family feels.... never goes away brenda- theres days its all i think about especially in december. december is the worst time of
charged with killing jade morris... pleaded guilty to the crime. stokes was in a relationship with jade's father phillip. the family says jade was one of a kind. brenda - she even taught me ill never forget she taught me how to use a computer police say stokes took jade shopping on december 21st... then stabbed her dozens of times and left her body in an undeveloped neighborhood in north las vegas... from there they say stokes went to the bellagio and attacked a coworker with razor blades. steve wolfson- this was a very very ugly heinous needless killing of a 10 year old girl not to mention the slashing and mayhem of the adult woman terrence- its always going to be apart of my life i dont think there was enough justice for the morris family... brenda stokes took one of the best things in their life... and no prison sentence.... can ever make it right terence we still suffer today so much (sobs) and i just want her to

she tried to leave burt dragged her out of her car into the house the judge warned burt---he must stay away from his victim. " if at anytime it is brought ot my attention that you have communicated with her, your bail will be revoked and you will be held without bail until this case reaches it's conclusion" " burt faced similar charges back in 2011... filed by his then wife. after agreeing to counseling and community service-- they were dismissed. he is due back in court on february 5th. after months of negotiations.... teachers in clark county.... officially have a new contract. "it is a step in the right direction. it will certainly help. it's not going to solve our teacher shortage, but it will definitely help the teacher shortage. " the ccsd board of trustees-- unanimously approved a two year contract. under the agreement.... increases are retroactive to september. the new salaries
on march first. should one of the largest school district's in the nation break up into mini districts? that's what was discussed during a town hall meeting tonight... where the public was able to voice their opinion. fox5s miguel martinez-valle joins us from las vegas city hall with what was said... the town hall tonight was an early step towards seeing what the best way to break up clark county school district would be , still not everyone believes making multiple school districts will solve the education problems in the valley clark county is the 5th largest school district in the country and assemblyman david gardner thinks thats a problem... assemblyman david gardner, " we have the largest rural district, as well as the largest urban district, and we have urban problems and we have rural problems and we have distance problems and we have transportation problems and its hard to get one group to get their mind wrapped around that."
that looked to break up the school district into smaller precincts, that bill is now law and the town hall is the start of a year long conversation on the best way to re-organize . mayor lee, north las vegas " in our particular case we have a lot of schools that these trailers on them, and we have dollars that come district but don't follow the urban children and the problems in those areas." the town hall officials from all over the valley, as well as parents and teachers... as a part of a reorganization study they hope to have done by asked the public questions on their concerns with the if they thought the school district was too big, and if they believed the size had a negative effect on education... most answered yes... annalise castor, break free ccsd " you know i think the fact that clark county school district wasn't here right now was the perfect representation of the fact that were just too big, and they need to let go of that control and really let it be returned to the neighborhoods and their schools." still others dont think breaking up ccsd is going to solve the inequality between schools in different parts of the valley rachael richardson, mother " it comes from schools individually you know and it becomes a matter of quality

on her first night back after that hiatus -- dion talked about her feeling as she returned to the stage. i'm very different... (sigh). it's kind of awkward emotions. while away from her home at the colloseum... celine stood as an example to her kids... facing challenege and adversity with a brave face. celine says: my husband needs me and i want to show my children that this is part of life and i got their backs. we got this. we're doing this. we're ok. once again the family will likely draw on that spirit of strength to get through the hardship and the heartache. and celine herself, may look for inspiration in words she spoke just months ago.

an update to the breaking news we brought you at the top of this newscast. a man is shot and killed... another in critical condition after an argument. hear is a live look at the scene near rancho and washington. police say two men drove to a home... armed with a gun... and confronted another man. they said an argument ensued... and shortly after shots were fired. the two men who drove up... were shot. one of them... a 70 year old hispanic man was hit multiple times... and died in the driveway. the other man was shot in the head... and taken to the hospital. the shooter, took off. police say there were several adults and children inside the home... that were not injured and that they are
police say they have a name of the possible gunman... but are not releasing it at this time. they say it doesn't seem to be gang related. a metro police officer accused of battery... was fired years ago for a similar incident with his ex wife. james burt-- appeared in court to face allegations by his current girlfriend. fox5's les krifaton tells us what happened... and how he was reinstated again after his 2011 arrest. with his hands cuffed to his sides and wearing leg irons one of metro's own appeared in court...on the charges connected to domestic dispute. how do you plead to those charges? not guilty your honor. according to the arrest report james burt a veteran metro officer got into an argument with his live in girlfriend. she told arresting officers when she tried to leave burt dragged her out of her car into the house injuring her neck and bruising her right breast. he eventually let her leave apologizing then asking her to help
argued that because his client was a honorably discharged marine, a police officer and that he co-operated with the arresting officers bail should not be set high. but the d.a.'s office wanted nothing to do with that argument based on another domestic violence arrest in 2011. he put that victim on the couch, his knee on her chest, she can't breath grabbed her around her jaw. in both situations there are injuries that are consistent with the events of the victims burt's attorney responded by pointing out the previous case had been dismissed as your honor knows dismissals don't fall out of the sky. he's presumed innocent until proven guilty in this case, the state elected to dismiss those charges. it turns out according to las vegas justice court that case was dismissed because burt forested $1,000 cash bond, agreed to stay out of trouble, did counciling and 100 hours of community service. the judge reminded burt's attorney that the prior case was a negotiated deal then added. in thinking about this case and the

during the recession, our fox5 shining star needed help. he had to do something to keep his business and his family afloat. now he's back on his feet and giving back to others in need. box these are all dry goods. - opening box - tony putting cans in bag, "canned goods, water" tony alessi is the director of food ministry for first c-m-e church. we started out in our chuch, and moved our chairs in the sanctuary, started with 35 families, continued to grow now he serves about two thousand people a month. the faces of the children when they see the food, they get all excited bc they have cereal, milk, eggs, things they wouldn't have. that's heartwarming tony's pastor nominated him for the fox5 shining star award. tony's a wonderful person, gracious, kind, has ambition to help people in need.
was one of those people in need. when the economy died, to keep my business surviving, i went to a food bank he says he got a bag of carrots and a couple cans of soup. waiting in the line for 2/5 hours, being disappointed there wasn't much for me. nats- volunteers packing i said to myself if i'm ever involved in a food bank, i'm going to make sure we have enough food for people and that's exactly what he's doing now. nats- put a couple of each item in i think it was great that he saw the problem with the system. he needed the help, went there, and didn't get enough to sustain a lifestyle. he changed what was going on, and runs one of the largest food banks in town tony got his shining star award, and certificate at fairway chevrolet... along with five hundred dollars.
