your fox5 traffic solutions let's begin with your drive here are the accidents to watch out and alternate routes you can use listed on our maps here are the construciton areas to look out for and alternate routes listed on our maps back to the news desk breaking news now... a search and rescue mission is underway in hawaii after two military aircraft collided off the north shore of oahu. crews have spotted a fire and debris field in the water. but no sign of the military personnel so far. 12 people were on board the two aircrafts at the time of the crash. stay with fox5 on air and online as this fluid situation continues to develop. after months of contentious debate, c-c-s-d teachers have agreed to a new contract with the school board. the agreement was reached at a town hall meeting last night. fox five's nick lagrange joins us live near clark and main with details of the new

dave and maria -- that meeting was held here at cuty hall, last night. for months -- c-c- s-d teachers have demanded a restructured pay schedule, as well as greater benefits contributions. and last night, they officially got both. in december -- the "clark county education association" announced their support of a new two-year contract. thursday night -- the c-c-s-d board of trustees unanimously approved that aggrement. the new contract dictates a 2.25 percent increase to the pay schedule, and at least a 45-dollar monthly increase in healthcare contributions. all of this is being implemented retroactively, though the new salaries won't go into effect until march first. "it is a step in the right direction. it will certainly help. it's not going to solve our teacher shortage, but it will definitely, it will definitely help the teacher shortage." the c-c-s-d tweeted last night, the new contract 'addresses recruitment, retention, and professional development.' obviously, increased pay and

..but a more concrete action plan for addressing the teacher shortage remains to be seen. originally, c-c-s-d teachers sought 70 million dollars in increases. this is a far cry from that, but it is an improvement. one that came without arbitration. dave and maria? now to another issue on the plate for the clark county school district... should the district be broken up? fox5's miguel martinez valle has more on the possible reorganization of one of the largest school districts in the nation. clark county is the 5th largest school district in the country and assemblyman david gardner thinks thats a problem... assemblyman david gardner, " we have the largest rural district, as well as the largest urban district, and we have urban problems and we have rural problems and we have distance problems and we have transportation problems and its hard to get one group to get their mind wrapped around that." gardner presented a bill that looked to break up the school district into smaller precincts, that bill is now law and the town hall is the start of a year

on the best way to re-organize . mayor lee, north las vegas " in our particular case we have a lot of schools that are old and have these trailers on them, and we have dollars that come to the school district but don't follow the urban children and the problems in those areas." the town hall welcomed officials from all over the valley, as well as parents and teachers... as a part of a reorganization study they hope to have done by next year they asked the public questions on their concerns with the district... people were asked if they thought the school district was too big, and if they believed the size had a negative effect on education... most answered yes... annalise castor, break free ccsd " you know i think the fact that clark county school district wasn't here right now was the perfect representation of the fact that were just too big, and they need to let go of that control and really let it be returned to the neighborhoods and their schools." still others dont think breaking up ccsd is going to solve the inequality between schools in different parts of the valley rachael richardson, mother " it comes from schools individually you know and it becomes

aren't deemed as quality, a lot teachers don't want to work with kids that don't make their numbers look good." they fear the precincts would actually hurt at risk schools and leave them behind... miguel martinez valle fox5 local las vegas>> ccsd did not send any representatives to last night's meeting but they did send an informational video at the request of the city. more than 160 social workers and mental health professionals will be hired in nevada schools, thanks to more than five million dollars in grants. students were surveyed on the health of their school climates. the social workers will be sent to the schools that need the most intervention. officials say investing in students' emotional and social health pays off with higher academic performance. in more local news, a man is dead and another is in critical condition after a family dispute at a valley home. it happened around seven last night at a home near rancho and washington. metro says two men drove up to the home where they confronted a male family member. that's when

fired. police say the person at that home shot and killed the 70 year old man and shot his accomplice in the head. there were several adults and children in the home at the time. metro says nobody in the home was hurt. the shooting is under investigation. bail was set for the metro officer accused of trying to choke his girlfriend. a judge set bail at 75-thousand dollars yesterday for officer james burt. this after his attorney argued he should set bail at a smaller bail due to his occupation. "in thinking about this case and the occupation of the your client doesn't he get a benefit because of what he does, or does he get treated differently because of what he does and quite frankly he should be treated like every other defendant in this courtroom" officer burt was fired from the force a few years ago for a similar incident involving his ex wife. that previous domestic violence case was dismissed after an arbitration ruling. burt got his job back with metro after that. burt's next court

5th. donald trump and senator ted cruz dropped their buddy-buddy act during the first g-o-p debate of 20-16. both are getting high marks for their performances... while the other candidates struggled to get a word in edge- wise. fox's caroline shively has more from north charleston, south carolina.

cruz says: "in september, my friend donald said that he had his lawyers look at this every which way, and there was no issue there. senator marco rubio also picking his fights and scoring some points against cruz... rubio says: "we all saw you flip your vote on ethenol in iowa for the same reason. that is not consistant conservatism. that is political calculation." the only thing the candidates seemed to agree on was beating hillary clinton at any cost. christie says; "it is to make sure we put someone on that stage in september who will fight hillary clinton and make sure she never ever makes it in the white house again." starts today. police say speed is a major factor in serious injury and fatal crashes. reminding drivers they need more reaction time and greater braking distance police say most drivers don't think about the consequences of speeding. solar customers and employees aren't the only ones affected by the public utilities commission's changes to our state's solar industry. the commission allowed a group of gaming companies to stop using n-v energy. but it will cost them a whopping 126 point six million dollars. allow m-g-m, las wynn to split that fee if they part ways. former republican governor bob list serves as chairman of the nevada coalition to protect rate payers. he says a fee is rate is unrealistic. "they have such a monopoly. the statute allows them to leave the public utilities commission has virtually made it impossible for them to do that." these three gaming companies

"i think that the teacher shortage is a huge issue. at school sites, we are having the lack of leadership and just a lack of collaboration, in large part, because of low morale. i don't even think that raising salaries for teachers is going to be the only answer to getting teachers back." originally -- teachers demanded 70 million dollars in increases, to effectively address the teacher shortage. this new agreement doesn't approach that, though it is a marked improvement. all-in-all, c-c-s-d teachers say they'll take it. there's still work to be done. and this is a story that isn't going away soon. of course, we will continue to follow any further plans to address the teacher shortage. dave and maria?

blackjack dealer charged with killing 10-year-old jade morris will spend the rest of her life in prison. brenda stokes accepted a plea deal in court yesterday. fox5's cyndi lundeberg spoke with the family who's still coping with jade's passing.

as part of brenda stokes plea agreement, she will not be eligible for parole... and can never appeal the ruling. she will be formally sentenced march 9th. a scary scene in florida after a passenger train collides with an s-u-v. authorities say it happened late last night in jacksonville. police say the s- u-v was illegally stopped on the tracks when it was hit. the driver of the s-u-v died. no one on the train was injured. amtrak says the lights and crossing arms were operating properly at the time. the cause of the crash remains under investigation. in international news... a ski trip ends in tragedy after a bus rolls off the road in japan. at least 14 people are dead and dozens more hurt following the early morning crash. the bus was carrying tourists to a ski resort when it crashed. there wasn't any snow or water on the road at the time of the crash, so investigators are trying to

went wrong. officials did say the company operating the bus has a history of safety violations. an explosion at a fireworks factory rocked central china on thursday. at least ten people were killed and a half a dozen others were hurt. authorities aren't sure what sparked the explosion. but say that fireworks related injuries at factories are common in the weeks leading up to the chinese new year. chipotle is going to close all of its stores next month... but only for a few hours on one day. on february eighth, nearly two-thousand chipotle locations will close so employees can attend a company-wide meeting. the move is aimed at rallying employees behind a new strategy focused on improving food safety. chipotle was tied to series of disease outbreaks, including e-coli, salmonella and norovirus. the centers for disease control says 53 people have been sickened in multiple states. a little girl

desk an eight-year-old burn survivor touched hearts around the world... with one simple request. christmas cards... and lots of them! she received more than one million of them... including a special one from right here in las vegas. local graphic artist keith tomczyk says safyre terry received his comic-book insipred artwork this week. he was moved by the number of people who sent her cards, so he came up with a heroic design for the special little girl. tonczyk drew captain america holding hands with little safyre. "i looked at my wife and i saw her story and told her, 'we gotta do something.' so, i got off that night, after i put regan to bed, and i saw the

just before midnight. crews have spotted a fire and debris field in the water off the north shore of oahu . each helicopter was carrying six passengers at the time. the coast guard hasn't said if any survivors have been found. the aircraft were from the "first marine aircraft wing" from marine corps base hawaii. stay with fox5 on air and online as this situation continues to develop. after months of contentious debate, c-c-s-d teachers have agreed to a new contract with the school board. the agreement was reached at a town hall meeting last night. fox five's nick lagrange joins us live near clark and main with details of the new contract. nick? dave and maria -- that meeting was hall, last night. for months -- c-c- s-d teachers have restructured pay schedule, as well benefits and last night, both. "clark county education support of a new two-year contract.

the c-c-s-d board of trustees unanimously approved that aggrement. the new contract dictates a 2.25 percent increase to the pay schedule, and at least a 45-dollar monthly increase in healthcare contributions. all of this is being implemented retroactively, though the new salaries won't go into effect until march first. "it is a step in the right direction. it will certainly help. it's not going to solve our teacher shortage, but it will definitely, it will definitely help the teacher shortage." the c-c-s-d tweeted last night, the new contract 'addresses recruitment, retention, and professional development.' obviously, increased pay and benefits helps... ..but a more concrete action plan for addressing the teacher shortage remains to be seen. originally, c-c-s-d teachers sought 70 million dollars in increases. this is a far cry from that, but it is an improvement. one that came without arbitration. dave and maria?

issue on the plate for the clark county school district... should the district be broken up? fox5's miguel martinez valle has more on the possible reorganization of one of the largest school districts in the nation. clark county is the 5th largest school district in the country and assemblyman david gardner thinks thats a problem... assemblyman david gardner, " we have the largest rural district, as well as the largest urban district, and we have urban problems and we have rural problems and we have distance problems and we have transportation problems and its hard to get one group to get their mind wrapped around that." gardner presented a bill that looked to break up the school district into smaller precincts, that bill is now law and the town hall is the start of a year long conversation on the best way to re-organize . mayor lee, north las vegas " in our particular case we have a lot of schools that are old and have these trailers on them, and we have dollars that come to the school district but don't follow the urban children and the problems in those areas." the town hall welcomed officials from all over the valley, as well as parents and teachers... as a part of a reorganization study they hope to

year they asked the public questions on their concerns with the district... people were asked if they thought the school district was too big, and if they believed the size had a negative effect on education... most answered yes... annalise castor, break free ccsd " you know i think the fact that clark county school district wasn't here right now was the perfect representation of the fact that were just too big, and they need to let go of that control and really let it be returned to the neighborhoods and their schools." still others dont think breaking up ccsd is going to solve the inequality between schools in different parts of the valley rachael richardson, mother " it comes from schools individually you know and it becomes a matter of quality teachers being at the schools that aren't deemed as quality, a lot teachers don't want to work with kids that don't make their numbers look good." they fear the precincts would actually hurt at risk schools and leave them behind... miguel martinez valle fox5 local las vegas>> ccsd did not send any representatives to last night's meeting but they did send an informational video at the request of the city. more than 160

professionals will be hired in nevada schools, thanks to more than five million dollars in grants. students were surveyed on the health of their school climates. the social workers will be sent to the schools that need the most intervention. officials say investing in students' emotional and social health pays off with higher academic performance. in more local news, a man is dead and another is in critical condition after a family dispute at a valley home. it happened around seven last night at a home near rancho and washington. metro says two men drove up to the home where they confronted a male family member. that's when things escalated and shots were fired. police say the person at that home shot and killed the 70 year old man and shot the other man in the head. there were several adults and children in the home at the time. metro says nobody in the home was hurt. the shooting is under investigation. bail was set for the metro officer accused of trying to choke his girlfriend. a judge set bail at 75-thousand dollars yesterday for officer james

"in thinking about this case and the occupation of the your client doesn't he get a benefit because of what he does, or does he get treated differently because of what he does and quite frankly he should be treated like every other defendant in this courtroom" officer burt was fired from the force a few years ago for a similar incident involving his ex wife. that previous domestic violence case was dismissed after an arbitration ruling. burt got his job back with metro after that. burt's next court date is february 5th. donald trump and senator ted cruz dropped their buddy-buddy act during the first g-o-p debate of 20-16. both are getting gh marks for their performances... while the other candidates struggled to get a word in edge- wise. fox's caroline shively has more from north charleston, south carolina.

solar customers and employees aren't the only ones affected by the public utilities commission's changes to our state's solar industry. the commission allowed a group of gaming companies to stop using n-v energy. but it will cost them a whopping 126 point six million dollars. the p-u-c voted to allow m-g-m, las vegas sands, and wynn to split that fee if they part ways. former republican governor bob list serves as chairman of the nevada coalition to protect rate payers. he says a fee is expected... but this rate is unrealistic. "they have such a monopoly. the statute allows them to leave the monopoly but the public utilities commission has virtually made it impossible for them to do that." these three gaming companies make up seven percent of n-v energy's customer base. the p-u-c says the steep fee would protect other customers from

a scary scene in florida after a passenger train collides with an s-u-v. authorities say it happened late last night in jacksonville. police say the s- u-v was illegally stopped on the tracks when it was hit. the driver of the s-u-v died. no one on the train was injured. amtrak says the lights and crossing arms were operating properly at the time. the cause of the crash remains under investigation. in international news... a ski trip ends in tragedy after a bus rolls off the road in japan. at least 14 people are dead and dozens more hurt following the early morning crash. the bus was carrying tourists to a ski resort when it crashed. there wasn't any snow or water on the road at the time of the crash, so investigators are trying to determine what went wrong. officials did say the company operating the bus has a history of safety violations. an explosion at a fireworks factory rocked central china on thursday.

people were killed and a half a dozen others were hurt. authorities aren't sure what caused the explosion. but say that fireworks related injuries at factories are common in the weeks leading up to the chinese new year. chipotle is going to close all of its stores next month... but only for a few hours on one day. on february eighth, nearly two-thousand chipotle locations will close so employees can attend a company-wide meeting. the move is aimed at rallying employees behind a new strategy focused on improving food safety. chipotle was tied to series of disease outbreaks, including e-coli, salmonella and norovirus. the centers for disease control says 53 people have been sickened in multiple states. breaking news now... walmart just announced plans to close more than 260 stores worldwide, more than half of those closures are right here in the u-s. most of the closures here in the u-s will be the
