valley intersection may have led to a deadly accident. metro says two cars crashed into each other last night at craig and lamb after a ford focus turned left on a green light in front of a dodge charger. the charger then slammed into a light pole, rolled over on its roof and struck another pole. the female passenger in the rolled vehicle died at the scene. the driver was transported to the hospital in critical condition. police say drivers get confused at the intersection because other lights in the neighborhood have flashing yellow lights... while this intersection just has the green light. later this morning metro will brief the media on friday night's officer involved shooting on the las vegas strip... and police finally know who they're dealing with. police arrested khaleal black friday night. he's accused of aiming a firearm at several people near the bellagio fountains. here's what police tell us happened... metro officer george smith confronted black. police say black didn't obey the officer's commands... so the

black. instead, one bullet grazed a child in the leg... another bullet went through a man's clothing... but he was not hurt. the child was treated at umc and released. a woman who saw the whole thing says she's glad no one was killed. "anything could happen at any time any moment any second he's just one out of thousands. i thank god we got one guy off the street starting trouble. that's always a good thing." black was arrested on several felony charges. police say he's known for selling goods to tourists. its a situation las vegas is all too familiar with... squatters. now... one valley community is uniting to stop the trespassers from taking over. it's become so bad in one neighborhood... some people are afraid to let their kids play outside... here's fox5's miguel martinez- valle with more.

" continuous traffic, in and out, its obvious they're peddling drugs." police say their hands were tied until the homeowner stepped forward as a victim. once they did, they were finally able to take action... "we found some illegal weapons in there, we found evidence of illegal drug use, and were investigating now what we believe was a fraud lab." two of the four suspects have been taken to into custody, they are charged with unlawful occupancy and possession of meth,. police say this wasn't their first run in with the law. " they had a significant criminal history where we had to have a

make it safe for us to get inside." neighbors say while they're happy this house was evicted, their squatter problem isn't over yet... "we believe there's a couple of other squatter houses in this neighborhood and we'd like them gone." miguel martinez- valle fox5 local las vegas>> metro says a new law that went into effect last october allows them act quicker against squatters. before the law, squatting was taken care of in civil court... now the issue is now addressed criminally. tonight county officials will have a better understanding of how many homeless people are living in the the 2016 southern census starts tonight. this count helps nevada get millions of dollars in grants for local programs that help the homeless. last year's census found 75-hundred people staying in shelters or on the streets at least two nights in january. the census ends tomorrow morning. at which time a separate count for homeless start. school choice week - and

planned in nevada, including a rally happening today at cashman center. organizers say the goal is to highlight educational options for parents. fox5's shannon moore is live outside cashman center with the details. thousands of people are expected to attend this gathering. it starts at 10am celebrating school choice for parents -- and the need for more options. organizers say the event is all about giving moms and dads the opportunity to select the best k- 12 education evironment for their kids from online learning to charter schools and homeschooling. speakers at the event will include public officials, educators and even parents trying to take advantage of nevada's school choice options. likely to be discussed today is the state's education savings account which would provide funding for private schooling. a judge put the brakes on that earlier this month saying its unconsititutional because it violates church and state.. and could possibly drain

today, while the city continues to clean up 2 feet of snow. and students in the district of columbia get a second snow day, as well as kids in baltimore and philadelphia. the weather is to blame for at least 36-deaths, and flights are slowly returning to the skies. and imagine opening your door to this. a new jersey couple saw this when they tried to leave their home on saturday. there was even an imprint of their door in the snow. the couple called their property manager but the weather was so bad they had to wait until the next day before they could be rescued from their home.

alternate routes listed on our maps back to the news desk in national news... disney is facing a lawsuit after former workers claim they were illegally replaced by foreign workers. two former technology employees at walt disney world say disney and outsourcing companies conspired to break the law and replace workers with others on high-skilled worker visas. about 300 workers lost their jobs last year. disney says the lawsuit misrepresents the facts and is without merit. panhandlers in chicago are suing the sheriff's department. the two panhandlers claim they lost up to ten dollars a day over four years because the cook county sheriff's deputies told them they could not ask for money at

offers bystander intervention training. it teaches students how to help victims of sexual assault... dating violence... bullying and stalking. students sign and place their "green dot" pledge on a display to signify they'll step in to end campus violence. unlv president len jessup was the first to commit. "we don't want any employees students or visitors to feel anyway there threatened or potential to feel bullied. we want people to feel comfortable in environment its very important." program organizers say "green dot" has reduced violence at other colleges across the country. students can show their pledges on different displays around campus this week. the first training course starts next friday. pool season is just a few weeks away... which means our casinos need some nice-looking ladi and gents to work poolside. m resort spa casino is looking to fill 90 seasonal positions for the "m resort pool"

listed on our maps here are the construciton areas to look out for and alternate routes listed on our maps back to the news a woman is dead and her boyfriend is behind bars accused of killing her with a sharpening tool. this is 39-year-old marland jackson. stabbed his 43- girlfriend at a home near civic several times before calling police. officers found the injured woman inside the home, she passed away shortly after. we spoke to a neighbor who she says she'd never witnessed any violence at the home. "you never know what happens. it's shocking to be right next door and they're so quiet. the mom is really nice like i said i dont know her name she's really sweet and nice." detectives say there were several people including children inside the home at the time. luckily no one else was hurt. the coroner will release the victim's name and

a clark county high school teacher is accused of having sex with a student. according to the clark county justice court website... valley high school teacher jillian lafave was taken into custody january 15th for that illegal act. the school district and lafave's attorney say she's been suspended without pay. the former pastor convicted of sexually abusing teenage girls in his congregation faces a henderson judge. last week, a jury found otis holland guilty on all charges related to the sexual assaults. now he's going through court proceedings again... this time for another accuser under the age of 16. a preliminary hearing is set for february 9th. in national news... a manhunt continues in california after a bold jailbreak at an orange county jail. security experts say the escaped inmates likely had help pulling off the daring escape. they also say the trio benefitted from the unattentive jail

escaped friday morning after sawing through a metal gate, crawling through plumbing tunnels and repelling down from the roof using a rope made from bed linens. president obama wants to ban the confinement for level offenders in the announcement an op-ed on the washington post. obama says the practice of isolating prisoners can cause long-term effects. he wants the practice to be used as a "last resort" when prisoners present a danger to themselves or others. the new policy will affect 10- thousand prisoners. the iowa caucuses are just 6 days away... bernie sanders, hillary clinton and martin o- malley faced off for their final time before people start voting. sanders reiterated his calls for free tuition at public colleges and universities, while clinton pushed for equal pay for women.

south carolina. the pawn shop owner explained why he thinks rubio is the "real deal." red with anger -- the man with the bat tapped on the door or the truck. that driver got out, but quickly got back in when realizing the car wasn't in park. i can. a very determined pup just has to have his stuffed animal. he tries and tries until he gets his favorite toy thats trapped on the other side of the door. a very unexpected pair. this monkey in india has taken a liking to this little guy. he has adopted the homeless puppy. the two are inseperable, he shares his food with him and even takes him for a ride as he swings through the trees. and protects him from other animals. a dog owner in alabama let her hound out to use the bathroom... but the pup clearly thought he needed to get some exercise. she saw people running by the home... and decided to join them. the 2 and half year old hound... named lou-divine-- accidentially ended up running a half marathon.... ludivine's owner didn't know the pup was missing-- until friends who were race volunteers started texting

the issue is now addressed criminally. tonight county officials will have a better understanding of how many homeless people are living in the valley. the 2016 southern nevada homeless census starts tonight. this count helps nevada get millions of dollars in grants for local programs that help the homeless. last year's census found 75-hundred people staying in shelters or on the streets at least two nights in january. the census ends tomorrow morning. at which time a separate count for homeless teenagers will start. it's national school choice week - and hundreds of events are planned in nevada, including a rally happening today at cashman center. organizers say the goal is to highlight educational options for parents. fox5's shannon moore is live outside cashman center with the details. thousands of people are expected to attend this gathering. it starts at 10am celebrating school choice for parents -- and the need for more options.
