hundreds of events are planned in nevada, including a rally happening today at cashman center. organizers say the goal is to highlight educational options for parents. fox5's shannon moore is live outside cashman center with the details. thousands of people are expected to attend this gathering. it starts at 10am celebrating school choice for parents -- and the need for more options. organizers say the event is all about giving moms and dads the opportunity to select the best k- 12 education evironment for their kids from online learning to charter schools and homeschooling. speakers at the event will include public officials, educators and even parents trying to take advantage of nevada's school choice options. likely to be discussed today is the state's education savings account which would provide funding for private schooling. a judge put the brakes on that earlier this month saying its

church and state.. and could possibly drain critical funding from our public schools. should be interesting to hear from people here today and get their thoughts specifically on that funding and where they'd like to see it go. have a crew at the you the very meeting in our newscasts tonight at 5 &6 . police are looking into a crash that left one person dead and 2 others injured... after confusion at a light. the accident happened at lamb and craig last night. police say 2 cars collided after one car turned left on a green light into another car. one of the cars hit a light pole, rolled over and slid on its roof...slamming into another pole. the passenger in that car died. the driver was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition. a north las vegas woman ead after police say her boyfriend stabbed her with a sharpening tool. the suspect is 39-

jackson. police say jackson called them after stabbing his girlfriend at a home near civic center and evans. when they arrived at the home, they found the woman's body inside.. officials were able to quickly arrest jackson. some neighbors witnessed any home. valorie at 430 in the people throwing a trash can and notice anything. that's all i heard. there were several people inside the home when it happened including children....but no one was hurt. jackson has been booked for open murder. the iowa caucus is less than a week away and presidential hopefuls are trying to drum up support. voters got a chance to ask questions and speak on issues important to them at the democratic town hall in iowa last night. all eyes are on hillary clinton and senator bernie sanders. martin o'malley is barely keeping afloat against them. the presidential hopefuls touched on the economy, healthcare and

suggested that the oranization illegally sold fetal tissue and organs for profit. instead of penalizing planned parenthood... the jury instead... indicted 2 anti- abortion activists behind staging and releasing the videos. they've been charged with tampering with governmental records. planned parenthood says the video was edited to suggest that they sold fetal tissue and that the accusations were not true. people on the east coast are still digging out of the blizzard. more than 40 people have died from the terrible weather conditions. schools in d-c, baltimore and philadelphia are still closed. the economic impact stands at a loss of about $3 billion. county officials will have a better understanding of how many homeless people are living here in the valley. the 2016 southern nevada homeless census starts tonight. this count helps nevada get millions of dollars in grants for local programs that help the homeless. last year's census found 75-hundred people staying in

children playing outside. fox5's miguel martinez-valle tells us how a community is coming together to make their neighborhood is safe from trespassers. " part of the reason why i got so involved is because i want to be able to walk him in the neighborhood, and take walks and do things with my grandchildren and my pets and not worry about walking past one of the squatter houses." its a problem this northwest valley neighborhood has been dealing with for months.. " thats one of the reasons we own fire arms, for not feeling safe, to protect ourselves and especially from situations like this" squatters, taking over empty homes, and turning them into a hub for crime... " continuous traffic, in and out, its obvious they're peddling drugs." police say their hands were tied until the homeowner stepped forward as a victim. once they did, they were finally able to take action... "we found some illegal weapons in there, we found evidence of illegal drug use, and were investigating now what we believe was a fraud lab."

suspects have been taken to into custody, they are charged with unlawful occupancy and possession of this wasn't their first run in with the law. " they had a significant criminal history where we had to have a the warrant to make it safe for us neighbors say while they're happy this house was evicted, their squatter yet... "we believe there's a couple of other squatter houses in and we'd like them gone." metro says a law that went into effect back in october allows them to act quicker against squatters. squatting was civil court but now addressed criminally. unlv students are vowing to fight sexual assault

violence on campus. it's part of a nationwide initiative called "green dot" and program offers intervention training to bystanders. the program also teaches students how to help victims of sexual assault... dating violence... bullying and stalking. students sign and place their "green dot" pledge on a red dot display to signify they will step in to end campus violence. unlv president len jessup was the first to commit. "we don't want any employees students or visitors to feel anyway there threatened or potential to feel bullied. we want people to feel comfortable in environment its very important." program organizers say

courtroom turns into the octagon after a brawl breaks out... and its all caught on video. watch as the man charges a deputy district attorney and shoves him to the ground. the man had just been found guilty of criminal sexual contact with a young girl. a deputy and even the judge stepped in to control him. it's likely the defendant will face extra time behind bars for the attack. and here's another crazy brawl for ya. this one took place on the streets of austin, texas. you can see one man with a bat, then the other man goes to get a long stick out of his car...which --by the way-- he forgot to put in park. then the two battle it out... and as soon as the light turns green... the men got back in their cars and take off.

athletes could be competing in the rio olympics game without having gender reassignment surgery. transgender athletes have been allowed in the olympics since 20-04, but only after surgery and 2 years of hormone therapy. the rule change establishes hormone-based criteria. anatomically male competitors must prove their testosterone levels have been below a certain benchmark for a year, to compete in female divisions. the international olympic committee also proposed a rule change allowing female- to-male transgender

with a student. the school district and lafave's attorney say she has been suspended without pay. the former pastor convicted of sexually abusing teenage girls in his congregation now faces a henderson judge. a jury found otis holland guilty last week on all charges related to the sexual assault. now... he's going through court proceedings again... this time for another accuser under the age of 16. a preliminary hearing is set for next month. good news for who are angry changed their meter rates. fox 5's cyndi lundeberg has the latest twist in the big solar energy debate. which they will discuss on february 8th. we have an update for you this morning on a former member of the fox5 family. the wife of retired metro officer john sheahan is making progress in her recovery. on friday... kristi sheahan suffered a stroke. doctors later found out she was suffering from complications from a rare brain condition. yesterday... sheahan posted on a support page that kristi has opened her eyes and was watching a video of their baby. many community members have rallied around the family to show their support. fox5 viewers may remember sergeant sheahan from our "behind the badge" segments.

officials have confirmed that a piece of metal found on a beach last week off the coast of thailand is not from the missing malaysia airlines flight 370. after reports came in that the piece could be from a rocket launched by japan...but families were holding onto hope. flight 370 went missing almost 2 years ago. malaysia airlines says that the plane crashed somewhere in the indian ocean...the plane was carrying 239 passengers. authorities have closed all schools in pakistan after getting an alert of possible militant attacks. government officials say they received intelligence about 13 taliban fighters planning suicide attacks on schools in the country. just last week 4

21 people. the attackers all died but in a video released on social media, the leader of the group...bacha khan says that the ambush is only the beginning of what he has planned. a manhunt continues in california after a bold jailbreak at an orange county jail. security experts say the escaped inmates likely had help pulling off the daring escape. they also say the trio benefitted from the unattentive jail staff. the inmates escaped friday morning after sawing through a metal gate, crawling through plumbing tunnels and using a rope made from bed linens. president obama wants to ban solitary confinement for juveniles and low-level offenders in federal prisons. he says the practice of isolating prisoners can cause long-term psychological effects like depression. he wants the practice to be used as a "last resort" when prisoners present a danger to themselves or others. the new policy would affect 10-thousand federal inmates.

that went into effect back in october allows them to act quicker against squatters. before that, squatting was taken care of in civil court but now the issue is addressed criminally. unlv students are vowing to fight sexual assault and dating violence on campus. it's part of a nationwide initiative called "green dot" and program offers intervention training to bystanders. the program also teaches students how to help victims of sexual assault... dating violence... bullying and stalking. students sign and place their "green dot" pledge on a red dot display to signify they will step in to end campus violence. unlv president len jessup was the first to commit. "we don't want any employees students or visitors to feel anyway there threatened or potential to feel bullied. we want people to feel comfortable in environment its very important." program organizers say "green dot" has reduced violence at other colleges across the country.

officer involved shooting that happened on the las vegas strip. police say the man accused of pointing a gun at people near the bellagio fountains on friday is being identified as khaleal black. they say the he did not obey commands to surrender his gun when officers arrived on the scene. one bullet grazed a child in the leg. that child was treated at umc and released... another bullet went through a man's clothing but he's okay. a teacher at valley high school is accused of having sex with a student. the clark county justice court website says jillian lafave was taken into custody last week for having sex with a student. the school district and lafave's attorney say she has been suspended without pay. the former pastor convicted of sexually abusing teenage girls in his congregation now faces a henderson judge. a jury found otis holland guilty last week on all charges related to the sexual assault. now... he's going through court proceedings again... this time for another accuser under the age of 16. a preliminary hearing is set for next month.
