live from las vegas, fox5 news at 10 starts now the family of a man hit and killed by a man high on heroin... plead for a stiffer sentence... after they say the man responsible- is getting off too easy. a deadly accident-- at a water park has many questioning the safety of parks in the valley. what they are doing to protect visitors. the excitement over an n-h-l team in the valley continues to grow... but there is still one thing fans are waiting for... a name... are we getting cl explain. this is fox5 news at 10. local. las vegas. an emotional day in court for the family of a man hit and killed by a man who was high on heroin.. a man sentenced to prison today. i'm john huck. i'm christine maddela. the impared driver hit and killed kadar brown in 2014 while brown was changing a tire on the side of the road. today, kadar's family pleaded with a judge for a harsh sentence.
outside the regional justice center to show us what happened inside the courtroom. the family of kadar brown says he had thousands of friends... today in court his mother wore a shirt with her sons face... his sister wore her brothers favorite shirt. bunny roman, victim's sister, - and ever since he's been gone, i'm lost. i'm cold. even though bunny roman while talking about her brother kadar brown...she still made a point to stare at the man resposible for killing him. in march 2014 gary adair hit brown while brown was changing a tire on he 95 near summerlin. adair told police he had been using heroine and prescription drugs. nats- he admitted to being a daily user of heroine in court tuesday morning... adair found out his fate. the state has asked for this court to impose 4-10 years in the nevada doc before the sentence was
statement... saying since the crash... he's worked to improve his life... and has remained sober. i pray for his family's forgiveness. three of browns family members plead with the judge for a stiff sentence. browns uncle was one of them.. and says the night his nephew was killed he actually drove up on the crash charles hager victim's uncle- for him to be hit, and his body to be ran under that vehicle and drug down the highway, it's a memory that i'll never forget last year the case made national headlines when browns mother punched adair in the face... lindona (lin- dawn-uh) thompson- my name is lindona thompson thompson was charged with battery and was fined 100 dollars. in court thompson told the judge the loss of her son has had rippling efects in her life.. lindona (lin- dawn-uh) thompson- my home and my heart are empty" wipes tear for the family of kadar brown... no sentence would have been enough... they describe brown him as a goofy man with an infectous laugh... who they say in this moment... would encourage them... to forgive his killer. lindona thompson- he wants us to forgive and move on
than done after court when we caught up with lindona thompson... kadar browns mother... she said part of the reason she punched gary adair ws simply because he kept pushing the court dates back. she said while she wasnt happy with the sentence... shes just thankful its all over. cl ffnll. gary adair has already served 228 days in jail... so he will get credit for time served as part of the four year sentence. the judge also ordered adair to pay 5-thousand dollars. and when he's releaed... he'll have to have a breathalyzer installed in his car. toss to weather the best shower chances stay east of us on wednesday and thursday while we enjoy a few clouds and highs in
a one year old boy is expected be okay after a very close call this morning... police were called to the home this morning near alexander and rancho.... after the boy was found face down in the pool. when police arrived the boy's father was administering c-p- r. the fami us the boy is improving tonight. the water slide where a ten year old boy was killed over the weekend... had not been inspected since it opened... two years ago. that's what we found in government records... caleb schwab was riding the verruckt-- billed the world's tallest water slide at the schlitterbahn water park in kansas city this past weekend... when he suffered a neck injury. it's still not clear exactly what happened... the park is shut down while authorities investigate.
parks are reassuring the community they take every safety pre-caution possible. fox5 checked into local laws. surprisingly-- we found there are no government regulations requiring ride safety checks for nevada. clark county requires roller coasters to be inspected regularly but the law leaves out water rides. cowabunga bay hires a third party company to do random inspections. they also have a strict height and weight requirement. the rides are tested every morning by mechanics. "every mechanical piece, every pump, every water flow. our mechanics and they sign that off before anybody than does a physical ride on the slide. our lifeguards then inspect them and they write off that it's good to go for the day." the southern nevada health district performs regular inspection on the parks water quality. police arrested a man in connection to the sexual assault of a hotel employee. this is ivon major. officers charged him with sexual assault, battery with intent to commit sexual assault and kidnapping among
police say late saturday afternoon a hotel employee was inside one of the rooms when major walked in... investigators say major beat and then sexually assaulted the victim... he only left when another employee came in. police are still looking for one of the suspects who beat and robbed a security guard early this morning near boulder station . it happened near vegas valley and lamb around 2:30. police say the guard was in uniform when the three suspects attacked the guard. the guard's handgun, baton and pe were stolen police were able to track down two of the suspects a short time later... if you have any information on the attack-- you are asked to call crimestoppers at 702-385-55-55. police have arrested the estranged husband of an elderly woman found dead at her home over the weekend. 55-year-old arthur lopez is now locked-up facing a murder charge. the roommate of 78-year-old erlina penaflor found her body sunday at her home near washington and
was found laying on the floor in a pool of blood. new information tonight on the bee attack at a southwest home that left one man in critical condition. fox5 did some digging. today we confirmed the company doing the work - was unlicensed. the owner of "toms bee hives" says he didn't have a business license .. because he is not a business.. when we asked city officials, they told us he should have business license. however, according to the state agriculture department, businesses which charge custormers to remove bee hives are not required to have a pesticides license .. due to the fact they are not exterminating the bees. ""people now want to save bees, so i'm sure there are people out there that are looking to do this as a business opportunity and we want to make sure they get licensed so they do it safely." " the department of agriculture is looking to change the local law. but says action won't be taken for a few months. delta airlines--

education savings account. the money is in addition to the 420 thousand the state has already paid to an outside firm-- bancroft associates who is defending the state. the voucher program allows parents to use public education money for the school of their choice... including private school tuition. it has been on hold sue to a pair of lawsuits calling it unconstitutional. its back-to- school season, and families all over the valley are bracing themselves for that back to school spending... it happens same time ery but the way it adds up always seems to sneak up on you... fox5's miguel martinez-valle joined a few families on their annual shopping trip, and saw first hand how some of them try to save some cash... those with school aged children are sure to have a list just like this one... with what the kids will need for this school year... but the small supplies add up pretty fast, and they can cost the family a pretty penny...

as soon as i hit the bottom of the first curve - the shoulder strap just kind of busted loose and i just held on as we went up the top of the next hill. we saw the same thing happen to another group of guys and thought hmm they must still be using the same raft. " the oberhauser family reached out to the park on social media after their visit and never heard back. the park is closed while police investigate the circumstances of the child's death. water parks are popular destinations suring the summer... the desert heat... now some are questioning the safety of our parks. fox5's eric hilt looked into the local regulations and the safety precautions our parks take. as riders slip and splash down the slides at cowabunga bay... nats ...parents say safety is their biggest concern. "i want to make sure that i'm safe but also that my boys are safe when we come...don't run, listen to lifeguards, and they have to make sure they're close to mommy"
like jessica are taking precautions -- we went to find out what laws there are to help ensure safety...and found out in southern nevada -- there aren't any government regulations. nats according to the international association of amusement parks and attractions...neva da is one of just a handful of states with no laws that regulate amusement parks... and while clark county requires routine inspections of rides like roller coasters -- cowabunga bay general manager shane huish told me water slides fall outside of the law nats -- wa such as roller coasters fall under amusement devices, water slides fall under attractions" so the individual parks are responsible to make sure every slide safe for riders -- a reponsibililty huish tells me he takes very seriously...by inspecting slides every day before the park opens. "we also hire an independent third party company that comes in and they do independent random visits to the park, so we never know when they're coming...they've come out twice so far and we've passed with an elite status"
routine inspections there are clear guidelines and warnings for guests -- including scales to make sure riders meet height and weight requirements. "we have height checks and every guard goes through a safety schpiel before the guests get on the slides, so they know what the ride is going to be like" safety checks that many parents say make them feel safe on the slides. even though the slides aren't inspected by public officials, the parks' water quality is checked multiple times a season. the tennessee bureau of been called in after three children fall from a ferris wheel while at a county fair "( "two of the children were alert and answereing questions. i can't tell you whether the third was or not, but the third child does have a head injury and was incubated last night and is still in the hospital-- " the children were on the ferris wheel... when the basket tipped... and they fell between 30 and 45 feet. it's unclear when the ride was last
