county school district. good morning i'm alyssa deitsch in for dave today and i'm maria silva. welcome to fox5 news this morning. first - cassandra jones joins us with a quick look at the fox 5 weather 24-7 forecast. more potential for showers or thunderstorms for the las vegas valley friday although most of the active weather if it develops will be east of the i-15 and in our local mountains. officially las vegas picked up .08" of rain thursday although some areas picked up more. the moisture sitting over mohave county in arizona is expected to remain in place through part of the weekend. the

forecast friday for potential rainfall is that there is no real triggering mechanism for rain so anything that does fall will be more terrain driven meaning closer to our local mountains. the uv index for friday is 9 which is very high. in just 4 days... the

burned through more than 35 thousand acres of land. high temperatures, low humidity, and dry brush are all to blame for fueling the fire. the fire forced the evacuation of at least 82 thousand people. but not everyone is willing to leave all they know behind. brian smith: we're fine this is the third time so i think we're smart in our decision to stay and we'll continue to do that until it's a true threat "mb: in 26 years i've seen fire behavior. i've never seen fire behavior like this. and fire was spotting 100, 200 yards ahead of itself. " more than 15 hundred firefighters are now battling the fire. the blue cut fire is 22 percent contained this morning. traffic is once again moving smoothly through cajon pass. the i-15 has reopened to drivers in both directions. it was temorarily shutdown due to the blue cut fire... new white barriers are now in place.

were damaged by the fire. the fire destroyed dozens of buildings... one of them is the historic summit inn off of the 15. fox5's miguel martinez valle spent the day there speaking to those affected by the wildfire. the historic summit inn stood right here off the 15, in what was once route 66 . i'm standing in what was one of the store houses for the summit in and even though it's destroyed it's the only part of the building left standing... the historic summit inn, one of the last gems from famous route 66... is no more the restaurant and convenience store meant different things to different people... to former owner cecile stevens the inn was his baby... cecile stevens , former owner "i've been through every foot of this building i know where every light plug is every panel" stevens sold the restaurant not

could face some serious criminal consequences. fox 5s cyndi lundeberg has more on dog owners responsibilities, to keep people safe... alvina mason- i just wish i told my grandbaby he couldnt go outside alvina mason choked back tears describing what happened wednesday afternoon... she told me darien stevenson was on his way to a friend's house when the dog attacked. darien's friend came running to tell her. that's when she ran to find the pitbull mix named left eye on top of the boy. alvina mason- i seen a dog covered in my grandsons blood and my grandbaby on the ground nine year old darien died at sunrise trauma. i didnt know what to do the dog looked like it was going to attack me we went back to the neighborhood where left eye lived... one neighbor, who didn't want to talk on camera, told us they filed a police report three weeks ago, when left eye attacked their child... and their dog. another neighbor says she saw that attack. maritza cardona- we hear someone

robbed at gun point in rio.... may be just that--a story. officials in brazil are now calling swimmer ryan lochte and three of his teammates-- liars. after surveillance video surfaces--casting doubt over the accuracy of their story. mary moloney explains. the news of four american swimmers -- robbed in rio at gunpoint -- cast a shadow over the olympic games. (ryan lochte/ olympic athlete): "they pulled out their guns. they told the other swimmers to get down on the ground. they got down on the ground. i refused. i was like we didn't do anything wrong....then the guy pulled out his gun he cocked it put it to my forehead...he took our money, he took my wallet." but police now say the stunning story is just that -- a story. (nats) "whhhhaaatttt" sunday -- gold medalist -- ryan lochte -- and three of his teammates -- gunnar bentz, jack conger and jimmy feigen -- partied at a club. afterwards -- surveillance video shows the swimmers at a gas station. rio officials say the olympians were

vandalized the business - then made up a cover story. police pointed to lochte as the principle troublemaker. they say he got into an angry confrontation with security guards. as the swimmers attempted to leave the gas station in a cab -- police say one security guard pulled a gun -- forcing the athletes out of the cab and on the ground. police defended the guard. eventually -- the police say the athletes paid for the damage and left. while sourmers weren't on their best behavior -- they say the athletes believed they were being robbed at gunpoint. because they say -- they couldn't leave until they gave up their money. lochte's attorney saying they are victims. but, police say one of the swimmers is cooperating...and lochte is the one who created the lie i'm mary moloney reporting. experts say the developments in this incident-- could lead to a p-r nightmare for lochte... costing him major endorsements. fortune magazine estimates ryan lochte earned two-point-three million dollars

casting new light on some age old advice about cracking your knuckles! it says it's good for you! researchers looked at ultrasounds of 400 people's knuckles.. ashe being cracked. and found those who cracked their knuckles had more flexibility after doing it. scientists say that happens because when you crack your knuckles you are pulling apart two surfaces of the joint. which brings down pressure in the joint. and allows the gas in the fluid to dissipate. the lower pressure allows for more flexibility! uber is going
