unlv. with the kiddos headed back to school... it's important to send them off with a well-balanced breakfast in their bellies. good morning i'm mike doria. i've got some tips to make breakfast a little easier for all you parents out there, next. good morning i'm dave hall. and i'm maria silva. welcome to fox5 news this morning. let's get straight to breaking news on the earthquake that hit central italy overnight... claiming at least 38 lives. this morning entire towns are in ruins... and authorities believe many people are still trapped underneath the rubble... so the death toll is expected to rise. now the race is on to get heavy equipment in there to clear the rubble and rescue the injured. people in one region say it felt like the earthquake lasted for 30- seconds. coming up in the next half hour... we'll hear from an american who was traveling abroad when the

local cancer patient. carolyn shirley- reed says the truck she uses to get to her chemo sessions was stolen this week. now the family is pleading to get their truck back. "recently i was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and my husband was going to take me up to the mountains to get way and relax." "theres already to much stress we take the camper and got to the mountains and try and take her mind off of it."

about her diagnosis on friday. she has already started chemo therapy. carolyn and her husband john planned to spend the weekend in the mountains in northern arizona. but when they woke up tuesday morning... their truck was gone. it was stolen from in front of their home on oquendo and pecos. john says the most frustrating part is the effect this is having on his wife. "what they've done to us it was more than truck it was a joyful weekend just to get our minds off things and now everytng shattered but i have hope." the 2000 f-250 truck is red. with a black shaker hood and fender wheels. the reeds have filed a police report... and are hoping the people who took the truck are watching. you can find pictures of the stolen truck on the homepage of

according to a new study. about a-third of u-s high school graduates aren't ready for college-level courses. the testing company found that only 38- percent of graduating seniors hit the college-prepared benchmark in three of the four core subjects tested. the a-c-t tests reading, english, math and science skills. more than 2- million graduating seniors took the act last year. it's move in day over at u-n-l-v. dorms rooms... making new friends... partying all ni i mean studying all night. u-n-l-v will welcome its largest freshman class in school history. around 18- hundred students will start moving in in a few hours. maria and i both went to u-n-l-v. so coming up at 8 a-m i'll be live from the dayton residence hall ... where i'll join some students as they make the big shift into college life.

wigs for cancer patients. permed and color-treated hair is allowed.. but unfortunately, bleached and highlighted hair cannot be donated. locks of love says it takes six to ten ponytails to make one hairpiece... so every single donation makes a difference. playing the penny slots paid off big time for a hawaii'n woman visiting las vegas. she won more than 10-million bucks at the wynn. the wynn says the woman won struck it rich sunday night. she was playing the megabucks wynn wheel... a custom game built specifically for wynn las vegas. she had only played about 3 dollars... when boom... jackpot... the woman has decided to remain anonymous for now. a little boy has won a jackpot of his own... it's not money...

the southern nevada health district has confirmed the first human- contracted case of west nile virus in southern nevada. according to health officials, a woman over the age of 50 was being treated for an aggressive form of the virus. but has since been release from the hospital. this is the only case so far in 2016. one person was also infected las year. at just two years old.. zion harvey lost his hands.. and his legs below the knees to a life threatening infection. 6 years later.. zion went through a life changing procedure. at just 8-years- old.. he became the nation's youngest hand transplant recipient. "nothing really changed, because everybody i know is still the same. all i can do now is grip a baseball. i can grip onto a bat better. i

since the procedure.. and harvey has made great progress. you may remember a few weeks ago he threw out the first pitch for the orioles... and while that was a great experience.. its the little things -- writing in his journal... making lunch.. and working a zipper.. that make every day for harvey so special. still.. he says there's one more thing he really wants to do. "convince mom to let me play football. (laughs)" mom is saying no to football... for now. i asked my daughter if she was excited to head back to school... she said... no... and marched off to play with her toys.

agencies are reminding drivers to slow down in school zones. this year, there are two new laws drivers need to be aware of. first... u-turns are not allowed in school zones. a lot of parents like to do this after dropping their child off at the curb. but it's illegal and increases the chance for a crash. also... no passing in school zones. if you see a car driving slow... you cannot pass it. that's because the car might be slowing down for a child that you don't see. drivers should always stop for school buses when the red overhead lights are flashing. school starts monday for most valley kiddos... many teachers are already in the classroom getting ready for the new school year. today all teachers are due in class for last- minute preps. these educators

plans... getting ready to welcome a new batch of smiling faces. teachers we spoke to want to remind parents that their kiddos are in good hands. they say school isn't only about learning... its also about having fun. "we always think you have have to have home work because they are not getting enough and la la la la. and i am a parent. and i have a middle schooler and there is a lot of homework at night and it is stressful." she wants families to spend more time together, for kids to play outside and get to bed early. it's only day 2 of school but already the policy is a big "i thought it was awesome because i like to play outside." ryan embley says last year he spent at least 30 minutes a night on homework and was concerned about how much 5th grade would come with. "i was like this is gonna be a nightmare." gladys wood principal, cindy hemry, fully supports the policy. "you know i think most parents are very relived when their kids come

homework!" so you can go out and do fun things and enjoy your family time as opposed to arguing nonstop." mrs. kammerer's admits she was strongly influenced by a teacher in the lower 48... who made the no homework policy and then had it go viral on social media. "she did some research and said homework is not..i don't know there is no success for it. it does not support them. and i'm like i love the idea." mrs. kammerer says kids might still take some work home... if they don't finish their in class assignments. some have plans to avoid that... "work harder in class." mrs. kammerer hopes the idea catches on... teachers across the country can team up on quality learning while keeping time for family.>> after getting punted out of

devastated after years of photos are auctioned off after a misunderstanding with a storage unit. something had gone wrong with danica winberg's mother's automatic payment.. but her mother didn't know because she was recovering at a nursing rehab center. inside the unit-- furniture and jewelry. one thing that is priceless to the family---were 14 photo albums. the albums--- containing photos--- spanning 70 years... miles southeast of the town of norcia. ...it's tremors... reverberating all the way to rome, about a hundred miles away. (voice of jessica turner / usgs) "we do know that it was felt pretty much throughout central italy." the initial quake was followed by a 5.5 magnitude aftershock about an hour later... ...as reports started coming in of collapsed buildings and at least one town in ruins... the death toll -- rising through the night. wednesday's quake... ...striking near the site of another deadly earthquake in 20-09. (voice of jessica turner / usgs) "it occurred near an earth quake of magnitude 6.3 that happ l'aquila in april of 20-09 which caused a lot of damage and also several casualties." preliminary assessments were ongoing overnight, but the result of the quake could be devastating. the quake - striking not only with significant force, but at a very shallow depth... ...a destructive combination that officials say could be followed by multiple aftershocks, possible landslides, and extensive casualties. i'm reid binion reporting>> the wife of a construction worker who died on the job says

shouldn't have even been working that day. ricardo bautista died monday when the scaffolding he was working on at tivoli village suddenly collapsed. his family remembers him as a loving husband and father... who always put his family first. ricardo's wife says he worked two jobs. she says the construction job was a side job he worked to earn extra cash. "he wasn't supposed to go to work , so i told him just stay home, take a day off. he said no i need to make more income." jacqueline says she and ricardo have three young children. osha is investigating the incident... so work at the construction site has stalled in the meantime. ricardo was the sole bread-winner for his family. if you would like to help the family. you can donate through a go fund me account set up in ricardo's name. you can find a link to it on our website fox5 vegas dot com. a local television

killed in a motorcycle crash. n-h-p troopers say the victim was hit by another driver on his lunch break tuesday. it happened near downtown at d street and the eye-15 off-ramp. n-h-p says the motorcyclist had just gotten off the freeway when a chevy suburban hit his bike. channel 3... confirms director philip honable died in the crash. we would like to offer our deepest condolences to philip's family and co-workers. north las vegas police are looking for the person wanted in a series of purse snatchings. police say the suspect struck at least four times sunday night... first on east lake mead at ten p-m... nearly an hour later on west lake mead.... then just before 11:30 at simmons ... and finally at 12:15 monday morning on craig road. if you have any information... you are asked to call police right away. you can also leave an anonymous tip with crime

news. the southern nevada health district has confirmed the first human- contracted case of west nile virus in southern nevada. according to health officials, a woman over the age of 50 was being treated for an aggressive form of the virus. but has since been release from the hospital. this is the only case so far in 2016. last year, only one person was reported infected. a new study suggests twins may have a longer life span. due to their close social connection. researchers reviewed data of hundred same-sex twins in denmark researchers found identical twins live longer lives than fraternal twins. and both groups have higher survival rates than the general population. at just two years old.. zion harvey lost both hands.. and his legs below the knees to a life threatening infection. 6 years later.. zion went through a life changing procedure. at just 8-years- old..
