alternate routes listed on our maps back to the news desk we'll start this morning with metro investigating three separate shootings... two of which ended deadly. the first one happened on lake mead near m-l-k. "we got information that a shot was fired, there was a victim down and that an unknown suspect very brief description, tall thin black male had fled the scene on foot." a helicopter and additional ground

brought in to look for the suspect... that search was unsuccessful. according to metro... a young man was found lying outside of a vehicle in a parking lot around 8 last night. he had a gunshot wound to the chest. the victim died about a half an hour later at u- m-c. police say they are investigating three witnesses right now. around the same time... shots were fired near twain and paradise. metro says the victim in this shooting also died. homicide detectives are still investigating police are calling this shooting an isolated incident. the victim in the third shooting survived. metro says shots were fired outside a home on autumn valley... near durango and gowan last night. it appears there was some sort of altercation that led up to the shooting. the victim in this shooting is expected to make a full recovery. if you have any information on any of these shootings call police right away. you can also call crime stoppers at 702-385-55-55. a busy intersection reopens after a driver blows through a red light causing a

"the gray lincoln tboned the red van now it ended up over there. it took out the control box and traffic lights. the lady the passenger of the red van was taken by ambulance right away. they were doing compressions. i wasn't sure she was going to make it." the crash happened at the intersection of boulder highway and russell wednesday afternoon. police say an 85-year-old man, driving a van failed to yield to a red light at the intersection and was hit by another vehicle. the passenger in the van died at u- m-c. the driver of the van remains hospitalized with serious injuries. firefighters with las vegas fire and rescue were busy this morning knocking down a fire in a 2-story vacant apartment building. the fire tore through the building on cincinnati avenue just after midnight. fire crews think squatters may have set the fire because they were seen leaving right before the fire department arrived. the department say a man called 9-1-1 shortly after the fire complaining of

he was right down the street from the building. investigators are now trying to determine if the man was inside the burning building when he was burned. the fire destroyed the building and was fully extinguished around 1:30 a-m. the fifth largest school district in the nation is one step closer to being broken up. the nevada board of education voted unanimously to move forward with a plan known as the "empowerment" model. under the plan, power would shift away from the central district office and give principals more control over their budgets. "this is more about shifting funds from central administration to the schools. for the first time, at least 80-percent of all unrestricted general fund education dollars will go directly to the schools." "so what you'll see over time is a more efficient streamlined central administration with more of the existing dollars going to the school." under the plan, each school in the district will be a "precinct" and have its own volunteer board. originally, the plan was to split the school district up into

travelers fox 5's mike doria joins us live from the i-15 corridor in primm where police will have increased patrols -- gas prices are probably the biggest driver of travel this weekend...triple says the prices are the lowest they've been since 2004. and since this stretch of highway is normally one of busiest in the country any, cops want to keep it extra safe this weekend. chp, nhp, metro and the henderson police department all joining forces on this stretch of highway this weekend. specifically they're looking for people speeding or not wearing seatbelts. police will be using the aircraft this weekend to catch violators. also -- they're zeroing in on people who are distracted with the smart phones. remember -- just holding it in your hand is grounds for a ticket. the national safety council is projecting 400 deaths during

a major recall this morning.. pulling all samsung galaxy note 7's.. saying the phone's battery can catch fire. that happened to one woman right here in the valley. fox 5's peter dawson joins us in the studio with more. alicia edwards was excited about her new samsung galaxy note 7 phone until it burst into flames. the phone was next to her bed charging when she heard a loud pop and a high pitch squeal. seeing her phone on fire she quickly grab it and rushed to throw it into some water. alicia has burns on her fingers and holes in the shirt she was wearing, proof this wasn't just a little over

alicia edwards samsung phone exploded "it was on the charger for about thirty minutes and exploded and burst into flames." "no one has contacted me from claims about the damage to my shirt or about the burns, they don't seem to care that much." well that's not true. samsung sent a replacement phone but it's the very same model that's exploding while it charges, and alicia is scared to use her replacement fearing the next time it malfunctions it could cause more damage to her, her house or her pets. you looking at video i found on youtube of other customers who have had the very same explosive problems alicia had. yesterday samsung has halted shipments of the galaxy note 7 and within the last few hours has issued a recall to millions of units. in the coming weeks the company will offer customers a new product for free to replace all 2.5 million galaxy note 7s that have been sold. one of the men

a local teenager over an ipad will spend at least the next 20 years behind bars.. back in 20-13. police say michael solid and his accomplice jacob dismont tried to

ipad but the teen wouldn't let go. that's when police say the men ran over the teen with their s-u-v and took his ipad. solid was sentenced to life in prison with parole on thursday. dismont plead guilty to second- degree murder and conspiracy before his trial.. and will be sentenced in october. a man killed during a traffic stop fired twice before being shot to death by a trooper, that's according to the nevada highway patrol. nhp released new information about the midnight shooting of 41- gibbon... who was killed last friday. fox5's eric hilt explains what nhp says happened.

subject called his mother who agreed to pick them up and give them a ride" nhp says shortly after, nhp trooper shawn peckham saw that car didn't have any tags, turned on his lights and pulled the three over. "gibbon was telling the female driver to not stop, the driver refused and pulled over in front of 4080 boulder highway" several minutes into the video of the traffic stop, you can see gibbon run out of the backseat carrying a backpack and a peckham got out of his car and then, seconds later outside the frame of the dashcam... nats -- shots ...gunshots. nats -- code red nhp says gibbon turned around and fired two shots... they say the trooper returned fire -- shooting 11 total rounds during the exchange and hitting gibbon in the left hand and in the forehead. nats -- "shots fired shots fired one is down" "gibbons was unresponsive and medical was called to the scene where he was pronounced

"we're very fortunate that it hit the badge in this case" eric hilt fox5 news local las vegas>> that trooper is expected to make a full recovery but is on paid administrative leave while the shooting investigation continues. las vegas is getting ready for a busy labor day weekend. the l-v-c-v-a predicts around 307-thousand people will visit las vegas over the holiday weekend. that's up from 305-thousand last year. more than 206- million in visitor spending is projected... with 95-percent of hotels expected to be at capacity. in july... las vegas welcomed a record-breaking three-point-eight million visitors. with 307-thousand people expected in las vegas for the labor day weekend. our local troopers will surely be busy. so starting today, the california highway patrol is teaming up with our local law enforcement to keep travelers in

patrolling the stretch of eye-15 that runs from southern california to las vegas all weekend long. this is the third time the agencies have joined forces. olive garden is showing its appreciation for our local first responders this labor day. the chain will be delivering a big "thank you" lunch to our local community heroes. more than 800 restaurants around the county are participating this year. since 2002... more than 10-thousand meals have been served to our nation's first responders. the animal foundation is helping people add a new m-v-p to their family by offering discount pet adoptions all month long. chihuahuas six months and older are 25-dollars. fees are waived for pit bulls and cats six month and older. fees typically range between 25 and 250-dollars for dogs... and 25-bucks for adult cats. there are currently 130 dogs and 60 cats available for adoption. the "adopt an mvp special" ends september 30th.

some floridians are having fun with hurricane hermine. the powerful storm weakened as made landfall in florida overnight. hermine continues to rock the gulf coast this morning. it's the first hurricane to hit florida in eleven years. fox's patricia stark has more on hermine's projected path.

the fire tore through the building on cincinnati avenue just after midnight. fire crews think squatters may have set the fire because they were seen leaving right before the fire department arrived. the department say a man called 9-1-1 shortly after the fire complaining of burns. he was right down the street from the building. investigators are now trying to determine if the man was inside the burning building when he was burned. the fire destroyed the building and was fully extinguished around 1:30 a-m. the fifth largest school district in the naon step closer to being broken up. the nevada board of education voted unanimously to move forward with a plan known as the "empowerment" model. under the plan, power would shift away from the central district office and give principals more control over their budgets. "this is more about shifting funds from central administration to the schools. for the first time, at least 80-percent of all unrestricted general fund education dollars will go directly to the schools."
