the day today, they've been asking any parents who might be concerned to bring in their kids clothes to get them screened. nats/ there was no information given! that is why we are here! this meeting was supposed to make people feel better... and, that didn't happen. especially because for the first time, investigators found out the problem might have been around a lot longer than they thought. nats/ why did you allow the kids back to school on wednesday if the spill happened on tuesday? nats/ this is -- this is wrong. (butto) nats/ i am here to tell you that this did not happen on tuesday. he touched it on friday. oh. thank you. nats/ why are they not here talking to us?! snes/ i'd like to thank you all for being here today in the middle of this challenging situation here at johnson middle school. well -- the

finally talking now -- not to parents at that meeting... but to our cameras, the next day. nats/ why do we have to watch the news?! snes/ we understand the frustration. we're equally as frustrated because we don't have the answers to the questions that they are putting out there. he says, they're in the process of making personal calls to parents... but at this point he says people need to be patient. nats/ hold on! hold on! that's a tough sell for a lot of parents who feel like they've been left in cold, and in the dark these past few days. every parent has a right to be angry, but they also have a right to listen to explanations and trying to understand how we don't all have the information to the questions that they're asking right now. the e-p-a is just trying to keep everyone calm... even though it's not scientifically possible to prove when the mercury on campus. epa/ we have a lot of training. unfortunately this is probably my 10th one doing it in elementary schools and middle schools.

nevada has had its share of incidents involving mercury and kids. a spill at a school happened back in 2003 in gardnerville. according to firefighters there... a boy brought four lipstick-sized vials of dental mercury to "pau-wa-lu middle school." investigators say the boy shared the mercury with kids on the bus and in the locker room. the epa says a total of 61 kids came in four classrooms came in direct contact with the mercury.... but the way the fire department's hazmat team dealt with decontaminating those kids was very different from the protocol at

high school. "the students were separated by sex our female firefighters and officers were able to basically strip them naked, decon them, take all of their clothing and personal property cell phones backpacks, tennis shoes gym clothes all of those items were placed into special bags and taken away from them. " the kids were then wrapped in blan on a bus to a fairgrounds about four miles away where their parents were able to pick them up. the school was closed for four days, and it cost 100 thousand dollars to clean it up. and it turns out... it isn't too hard to get ahold of mercury. coming up at five... we're going to show you how easily kids can buy it online. there's a big change coming to the clark county school district... the clark county school district... today lawmakers voted to give more

and work to reorganize the nation's fifth largest school district starts now. fox5's eric hilt was at that meeting and joins us here in the studio to break down what will happen with the district. the new plan will work like this... --each individual school will set up a volunteer board... --that board will be made up of teachers, parents, support staff and even a student. --it's that board that will hold meetings and decide on a budget for the school. the plan was approved unanimouy, there are still some worries. nats -- all in favor? "aye" and just like that -- after months of debates, forums, discussions and questions -- the nation's fifth largest school district will undergo a big change. "until the final vote was taken today it wasn't time to move forward, now it is time to move froward, and quickly" this afternoon, a 12 member
4:06 pm
approved the ccsd reorganization plan, which will take power from the district and give it to individual schools. "it's taking it from a top down model, to a bottom up model" a model that ccsd superintendent pat skorkowsky says will require work from the district -- and involvement from the parents. "hopefully the parents will notice the openness that schools will be getting into and will make sure that they're getting involved and getting engaged in their child's work. they dont have to be an organizational team member to be engaged in their child's school" after nearly three hours of discussion -- the vote was unanimous...but doesn't mean there aren't still plenty of concerns. lawmakers said they're worried about how open the volunteer board meetings will be, how schools would get parents involved in the school and even the process about how we got to this vote. the plan will be implemented by the 2017 school year but --- says schools will need to know thier budgets by mid- january so work on getting the
