(gov. rick scott, florida) we are already starting to see the impacts. and it is a monster. again, our number one priority is protecting every life in this state. power lines are down across the state. hundreds of thousands are without power. but despite repeated calls to evacuate and predictions of a devastating storm surge, (gov. rick scott, (r) florida) 11 feet possible storm surge. in your house, if you're close, you could have storm surge and waves over

including the fort lauderdale- hollywood international airport.. and the orlando international airport. most are expected to open back up tomorrow. nationwide-- nearly 38-hundred flights have been canceled including all flights from mccarran in and out of florida. this is likely why-- take a look at this frightening flight. pilots flew right into the eye of the storm. they remain calm.. but its still a terrifying scene. thankfully they made it through safely sadly, every time we see a disaster of this size.. along with legitimate relief efforts--come donation scams. fox5's alyssa deitsch joins us with some tips on how to make sure your money is getting to the people who need it most... alyssa. one of those legitimate organizations is the red cross... and volunteer efforts are already underway here locally to help those on the east coast.

"people need a lot of help... i can't even imagine what to expect." sadly... not every organization is out to help others. and the b-b-b is offering some advice to make sure your donations are going where you want them to. so you need to do your homework... don't just donate to whatever your friends sare sharing on facebook... or crowdfunding websites-- those are prime spots for scams to spread. and be wary of claims that 100 percent of donations help victims-- all charities have some sort of fundraising and administrative costs. we see a ton of charities pop up after every natural disaster... so check out

as state lawmakres prepare for the special session on a possible n-f-l stadium. mayor carolyn goodman continues to push for the stadium to be built downtown. " we know we have a perfect site down at cashmen. so we keep hoping that because it's in the heart of the city, the community accesss is there, timing is there. the infrastructure is already in, we have sewer we have everything!" and i'm maria silva. welcome to fox5 news this morning. authorities are evacuating florida's atlantic coast as hurricane matthew marches up the coastline. you are looking live at the scene in jensen beach, florida this morning. more than 360- thousand are without power right now. people have been evacuating the area by the thousands, and those refusing to leave are now finding themselves cut off, as the potentially catastrophic hurricane prepares to make landfall. "it's here - its absolutely here. its not very far off the coast of palm beach... we are starting to see the impacts and it's a monster." along with the power outages, water and sewer service has been cut off for people living in saint johns county, to protect the water supply. right now, the storm is packing 120 mile an

to 140 miles an hour, which could lead to a potentially deadly storm surge. "the winds are incredibly high and the rain" "you're talking about 8 to 12 inches and getting higher numbers past that." "storm surge - think about this 11 feet - possible...storm surge."
