ethan couch became known across the country following a deadly drunken driving crash. he pleaded "affluenza"...meanin g his wealthy parents didn't bring raise him right. authorities believe couch and his mother fled to mexico in november as prosecutors investigated whether the teen violated his parole. another story we continue to follow -- the terrorist attacks in california. a grand jury is indicting a friend of the shooter. prosecutors are charging him with allegedly conspiring with syed farook to commit terrorist acts a few years ago. this adds two more counts to the charges he was initially facing in connection with the san bernardino massacre. a state of emergency in place in missouri.. as flood waters continue to rise. multiple rivers are at or above flood stage. crest nearly 14-feet above flood stage. yesterday the state's governor toured areas that are threatened.. and said even when the waters recede the danger isn't over.. there will be damage underneath.

snow. the mild winter is a thing of the past -- and that means more cars might stall. mechanics say car fires and stalling mainly depend on how well maintained your vehicle is. (andrew torkelson/mechanic) "if you were ignoring your car long enough that it was blowing fill your exhaust with oil, and that could get hot enough to start a fire, and that'd be right underneath the car. you wouldn't even notice until your seat was hot." mechanics say if the hood of your car were to catch fire while driving... keep it closed and get out. to help prevent stalling... mechanics say keep your fuel tank more than a quarter full. the f-a-a is investigating after a flight is diverted. we don't know what the emergency was. a flight heading from orlando to maine ended up landing in rhode island. passengers reported smelling was scary... some have a sense of about it. "we're lucky, ray doesn't have go to work until friday night so we got an extra day built in, but we are out of underwear" laughs

stranded travelers up in hotels for the night and plans to fly them out today a flight lands in canada with 20 injured passengers - all due to turbulence. some of them actually had to go to the hospital -- at least three passengers were seen being loaded into ambulances. people reported having neck and back injuries due to turbulence. the flight was carrying more than 350 passengers and crew members. and check this out -- a plane at chicago's o'hare airport skid past its gate due to heavy snow. the plane had to be towed to its gate. no one was hurt. a popular holiday gift...is actually banned in a major city now new york lawmakers are the legalization of hoverboards in new york city. state law classifies hoverboards as motor vehicles that must be registered. the problem is, they can't be registered, so they're a no-go in the city. some lawmakers feel the ban is

despite their popularity...hoverb oards continue to prove dangerous. another report of one catching fire, this time in south carolina. firefighters say the board was sitting in the living room when it burst into flames...sending charred pieces flying 25 feet across the house. "had they not been home with and the furniture that was burning they probably would have lost their home." no one was hurt. there have been more than 20 nationwide in health news...an increasing number of women are choosing to give birth outside a hospital while the majority of these home deliveries are safe ... there are some risks. researchers found babies born outside of a hospital were twice as likely to die ... although the true risk was still very low. about 16-percent of the women who planned a home delivery ended up being transfered to a hospital.

clearing out. however, they left about half an inch of fluffy snow in some areas and that is coating the roads mainly from dubuque to independence southward. as the snow tracks out, temps cooled into the teens in some areas and held steady in others (depending on cloud cover). stormtrack7 live weather network cameras will show a mix of clouds and sun today, but the snow should be over. most of us are still in the low to mid 20s, but the low teens are working into our area, while northwest iowa has dropped to around zero in sheldon! wind chills are in the negative teens there, while we remain above zero. west winds are 5 to 15 mph and will stay that way for a couple of days, including tonight, so bundle up if you are heading out to ring in the new year somewhere. clouds will clear out, but a few more will track in from a trough tracking through the dakotas right now. and another one will track through tomorrow. this will keep a few clouds over us, but we will also stay cool. highs today will be about where they are right now with temps dropping into the single

get people to higher ground as rivers and streams rise... but for some... it's too late. this is video out of fenton, missouri -- near st. louis. what's left of a house crashes right into a bridge. many homes have been destroyed. let's give you a look from above now. many bridges and overpasses are under wattr. at least 20 people in missouri and illinois have died -- most were in cars swept away by floodwaters. missouri's governor compared this devastation to the 93 going to be a little shorter, but the bottom line is you've locations which means this is very dangerous. you've already had a number of deaths and we're out there trying to not only help manage e he situation but to save lives." here's some good news. for now, there's no more rain in the forecast. also in that state -- two people were hurt -- but are expected to survive -- after a plane crashed near a high school. the couple was able to call

after the plane went wn outside of springfield. firefighters cut off the roof to "it's really hard to see up there the, and brought them, to an abrupt stop." authorities say they don't know where the couple was going... but again... they say both are expected to be ok. paramedics already have a tough job... but it becomes even more difficult when emergencies happen in dangerous conditions -- like we've had in eastern iowa this week. you can see in this video -- our camera is shaking. it can be a bumpy ride in an ambulance. paramedics say they try to get to an emergency in nine minutes "the ambulance itself is a giant box, it slides very eaealy, we have rear wheel drive on them so they, they're really hard to corner, especially in the slick conditions." he tells us paramedics working on patients in the back many

aren't wearing ssatbelts, so when they hit ice, they can easily get thrown around --- which can be scary. right now, eastern iowa firefighters want to see red or whatever color a fire hydrant is. they're calling on people to clear the snow away from fire hydrants. kwwl's olivia mancino rode along with a cedar falls rescue truck to get a look at the problem monday's storm left behind. a major snow fall can fighters. "we have some hydrants that have flags on them, but if we dont have a flag to find it we have to start digging to find 540 looking for firehydrants that need to be cleared out." we drove around a few neighborhoods in cedar falls to look for buried hydrants it didn't take long to firefighters nearly 20 seconds to clear out this hydrant... thats precious time taken away from fighting an actual fire-- "time is critical, fire can grow in a matter of minutes, so if we have to spend a minute finding the hydrant clearing out around tips residents should know about clearing

authorities in brussels arrested two people this week. they're suspected of being involved in a plot to attack sites in belgium today. belgium's prime minister says the decision to cancel the celebration inin brussels was a "ddicate" one. many people have been waiting all week for this....the rose bowl before the big game... the 127th rose parade and it's the last day for decorators to get their floats ready... kwwl's amanda gilbert joins us live in the newsroom... she has a sneak peak at what the hawkeye float and what other floats will look like. volunteers are putting the final touches on floats -- for the 127th rose parade which happens tomorrow right before the big game.... now the theme for this year's parade is find your adventure...the g gal is to shine light on the nation's national parks. it sure looks like the hawkeye float is following along with the

woods, the dog is healthy and has recently been adopted. now to a much different kind of lost and found. a woman is searching for the owner of a wedding ring after it was found in a pair of men's jeans she ordered for her husband as a christmas gift. the woman ordered this jeans from eiman marcus. her husband tried the jeans on-- put s hands in te pockets and "this is something that is very haven't found it. so this is very close to my heart and i really want to find the owner." neiman marcus says it's aware of what happened -- and is now working to find the owner. it's and here's a look at today's birthdays. happy birthday from kwwl.
