the sixth g-o-p debate wrapping up tonight in south carolina ahead of next month's iowa caucus. a new nbc poll released today shows donald trump has more than doubled his lead in the republican race -- garnering 33 percent of the votes. he's followed by senator ted cruz at 20 percent and senator marco rubio at 13 percent. dr. ben carson sits in fourth at 12 percent. cruz also leads trump in a hypothetical head- to-head matchup -- 51 to 43 percent -- according to the poll. let's head out to steve handelsman who is live in north charleston, south carolina with more... trump admitted here in north charleston that he ended his truce with cruz because the texas senator is doing better in the polls and finally cruz struck back. they came to debate

520 elm street - a home owned by dorothy spates - hit that mark on december 15th when officers responded to a complaint of disorderly conduct that ended in threats made towards the officers. but police chief dan trelka says its all part of a bigger picture on that block. april 1st - - reports of shots fired in the 500 block of april 7th - - shots fired at the home and sending one person to the shots fired. just three of 48 reports of some kind of police activity needed in the 500 block of elm. "we are using this liquid foam to fill in bullet holes, so that that is sad. and they are victims. i mean, when your house gets shot up, you are a victim, but." but it hasn't been just once - trelka says it's been repeatedly.

because there's nothing going on at her house. i am not the police, but a 'taxpayer,' she said....telling police to stop harassing her family. she admits she has weapons in her house.... to protect her family. we've got you covered live in the newsroom . . .jessica hartman kwwl news. we did reach out to mayor hart - -who campaigned on safer streets and neighborhood empowerment - - he declined to comment. police arrest a woman following the death of a toddler at an in- home daycare. officers responded to a call of a child, one- year-old brody harrelson, not breathing, at an waterloo in-home day care on according to a criminal complaint --brody was improperly strapped into a car seat inside the home. the woman running the daycare -- amy hangartner -- is now charged with child endangerment resulting in death. police say she admitted to

brody in the car seat -- and that the strap slipped up against his neck. police are still not sure if it was an accident or not. a mother and her two-year-old son are killed following a crash in iowa county. it happened on highway 212 about five miles west of marengo. authorities say 18-year-old bethany clark lost control on the frost covered road -- went into the ditch and hit a creek embankment. the car caught fire following the crash -- killing both clark and her son. a man convicted of sexual abuse is now facing more charges in separate incidents with two children. authorities say jody anderson, of boone county, sexually abused an 11-year-old and 13- year-old between 2011 and 2012. he is charged with second and third degree sexual abuse. anderson pleaded guilty to a third degree sexual abuse charge in winnebago county last year -- for which he is currently serving

authorities identify human remains found in a burned home in sac county. the fire happening in the 3200 block of 390th st. last week. the victim is identified as 48- year-old daniel mielk. he died of smoke inhalation and thermal injuries. foul play is not suspected, however the cause of the fire remains under investigation. people who work at the linn country courthouse likely haven't had a pleasant past few days. after pipes burst inside the courthouse earlier this week... the bulding's heating system went down. on wednesday... linn county emergency management sent a heating generator trailer to help warm up the courthouse while workers repair the building. as of tonight... it's still operating on site. a federal court this week rules it is considered free speech to wear military medals you didn't earn. the court overturning the conviction of a marine who

purple heart he didn't earn, trying to boost his credibility. many local veterans not happy with the news. kwwl's brad hanson joins us live now--and brad, you talked to quite a few unhappy veterans today. i did, and the message from them was pretty consistent--if you didn't earn it, don't wear it. it's a conversation that comes up often at the veteran's freedom center in dubuque. and one that often invokes disgust--people wearing military medals they haven't earned. (jim wagner, veteran) "if anybody can wear them, what about all the people that have earned these and are still suffering yet today. i don't get it." wagner is a purple heart receipent himself, and is not

with a court's decision to make the wearing of unearned medals free speech. "the medals are going to be absolutely worthless if anybody can wear them. what good are they?" (brad hanson, @bhansonkwwl) "wagner and a number of other veterans today telling me how disgusted they are with this decision. i also took the question to our facebook page, where we got quite a few responses as well." tj norton says it's unacceptable, whilte michael walker says as a vet, he only wears what he earned. meanwhile, terry kohlmeyer draws a parallel to other examples--asking if she could brag she earned a master's without ever earning one. back at the veteran's freedom center, dedra tentis, a retired lieutenant colonel in the air force, says it degrades the history behind each medal. (dedra tentis, veteran) "so if you think about the decades, and awards have been given out, and the folks that have made those awards what they are today. the folks who actually began the origins of the award.

police still have no leads after an iowa state university student was killed in a hit-and-run. the victim was freshman -- emmalee jacobs. officers say they've gotten dozens of tips but authorities are left with little information. they're hoping new leads come during the new semester -- which began this week.

about the case.. the vehicle or the driver involved.. call ames police or story county crime stoppers. we have that info on our website kwwl dot com. a 13-year-old boy is recovering after falling through an icy pond. it happened in topeka, kansas. fire crews say the boy went onto the ice to grab a bottle --- but fell through. he was under for nearly ten minutes before rescue crews came to help him out. the child was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated for hypothermia -- but he is expected to be okay. minnesota vikings kicker blair walsh may still be having nightmares about last week's missed kick -- but he's getting some words of encouragement from some young fans. walsh missed this potential game- winning field goal at the end of last week's game against the seattle seahawks. today -- he spent time with a group of first graders who sent letters to the kicker to lift his spirits. walsh with a simple message to
