heart.... one eastern iowan girl has been doing that her whole life. doctors said there was a slim chance she'd survive much longer than five days... now she's 8 years old. kwwl's amanda gilbert joins us live in the newsroom... she got to meet olivia and her family. olivia was born with a rare condition called hypo-plastic left heart syndrome...which means the left side of her hearts is missing.... throughout her life, she's proven doctors predictions...to be wrong liv: "so my heart looks like olivia spencer is living with half a heart. it's called hypoplastic left heart syndrome.... which means the left side of her heart is missing... this town, and the generations of other families that were apart of us" she plans to rebuild...and friends are helping her wit fundraising efforts. a firefighter is injured on the job. this fire happened at goodyear tire storage in fort dodge. crews had a hard time putting out the fire due to all the tires and propane tanks inside the building. another building next to it also caught fire. luckily --crews say the firefighter's injuries were minor. the amount of damage isn't known this morning. this morning, we're hearing the chaos...as a police officer is punched by a suspect. 33-year-old nathan brocks faces multiple charges in the assault. it happened at the soapy waters laundromat in cedar rapids. police say the officer was speaking with brocks when he punched him -- knocking him unconcious. you can hear some of the "i'm out at soapy waters." other officers tased brocks before taking him into custody, because they say he fought back. the officer's name has not been released. as his former team gets ready to take on the denver broncos for the a- f-c championship, former new england patriot tight end aaron hernandez will be appearing in a massachusetts court. hernandez is accused of killing two men following an encounter at a boston nightclub. he pleaded not guilty. last year, hernandez was convicted of the murder of his friend and sentenced to life in prison. the iowa caucuses are 13 days away and candidates are working to get support. carly fiorina will be in waverly this morning and donald trump has multiple stops scheduled in iowa today. he's promising a major announcement and special guest guest during an afternoon rally in ames. we'll have to see who that is later today. senator marco rubio was all over eastern iowa yesterday -- starting at seven a-m in decorah. then a town hall in waverly. he was also in coralville -- where

-- and whether he supports a path to citizenship. in a campaign ad -- rubio says so once illegal immigration is certain group of people that have been here for a long time, have not otherwise violated the law, can pass a background check, have paid taxes, are starting, will pay a fine and they'll get a work permit. rubio is in third in a recent poll in iowa. governor chris christie has spent the last several days in central and western iowa campaigning. he spends much of his time on the stump -- talking about hillary clinton christie has struggled in iowa. recent polls have him tied with fiorina for seventh place. another republican contender who's having a hard time getting traction is the man who won the iowa caucuses in 2012. former senator rick santorum had a town hall meeting at vgm in waterloo. he also stopped in waverly. he'll be in central iowa today. on the democratic side, hillary clinton in a tight battle with

a big crowd turned out for her visit to toledo last night... fall, that iowa will be part of the future not doing a u-turn to the past." clinton has other campaign stops in iowa this week -- including in vinton and iowa city on thursday. two weeks from today waterloo voters will decide whether to build a career center. tonight there's a town hall meeting for voters to learn more center for the arts starting at seven tonight. if you cant make it tonight, there will be two more town halls this week. continuing coverage...people in waverly are trying to decide what to do about a historic bridge. it's been months since the green bridge has seen traffic...it's been closed because of structural problems. the city is looking at 14 possibilities... including repairing, removing, and relocating the historic icon. bill shaffer "my suggestion

the president of the academy issuing a statement saying...the racial make-up of voters who decide awards -- needs to change. the co-founder of the 19-70's rock band "the eagles" has died. glenn frey was 67. he died in new york city -- after fighting a number of health problems including pneumonia. a firefighter's helmet camera captures a dramatic rescue. a mother and her infant trapped inside a second story apartment, you can see the firefighter climbing a ladder hetakes the child from its mother, then lowers the infant to another firefighter. the mom along with six other adults inside the complex were also rescued thankfully, no one was hurt. a car chase ends on a california freeway...but then officers have to start chasing the six dogs inside the suspect's car. the chase started last night when the driver failed failed to stop for officers. several dogs could be seen in
