watching the roads. last night -- drivers in washington d-c got a taste of what they can expect this weekend. drivers crashed on icy roads and sat in gridlock for hours. they're prepping for the worst -- as some forecasts have two feet of snow this weekend. dangerous blizzard conditions are especially expected to hit baltimore and washington d- c... some students in eastern iowa have today off -- for safety precautions... students at grundy center middle and high school have been given the day off after fire alarms when off this morning... we talked to the district's superintendent-- he says the cause for the alarms hasn't been determined... but alarms also went off yesterday for a possible gas leak... some parents in a different iowa town are speaking out.... they're concerned and confused after learning about some changes happening to their kid's special education school. kwwl's amanda gilbert has been monitoring the situation -- and has more for us today... ok so minimize that phillip trimble's 12- "and it's really become a place studentswho have mental health problems

"you can't help, but do so. i would like to think that she fighter." mensen says she is glad to see emmalee finallly get some justice. the iowa d-o-t has a new way to keep an eye on traffic. the d-o-t opening a new traffic management center inside the drivers license building in ankeny. workers can watch 48 video feeds at once from a total of 320 cameras state wide... the purpose of the center is to monitor traffic, and keep traffic flowing throughout the state of iowa on the states primary highway system. using this system, workers can also dispatch highway helpers and help steer law enforcement to accidents on the road. in the iowa legislature -- a native american tribe may soon have more control over crimes committed

which would give "the sac and fox tribe" judicial power regarding crimes committed between tribal members on the meskwaki settlement. these two men, gordon lasley, junior and jonathan youngbear convicted of seperate murders on the mesquaki settlement in recent years. both cases were tried in federal court. veterans issues come to the forefront at the capitol for the annual veterans day. lieutenant governor kim reynolds giving an update on the state's home base iowa initiative. it connects veterans with careers in iowa. so far, 36 communities have signed up to be part of the works... as a state, there isn;t anything better than we can go than to drug free, physically fit, they've shown the leadership and demonstrated time and time againss overseas and at home, that it's all about taking care of one another. according to the lieutenant governor, the home base iowa

elsewhere... investigators are looking for the suspect who shot and killed a police canine officer. the sheriff's office in texas believes they know who the suspect is.. they say the dog jumped n a suspect during a traffic stop when the driver got into a fight with a lost the man they believe shot the dog... "we assume the suspect is still armed, as far as we are concerned he is still armed, we dangerous" a service for the dog will be held on saturday. meanwhile -- dog owners were puzzled this week after their dog was found running around in traffic in southern california. the dog is from arkansas. the family said they had no idea how the dog had gotten more than a thousand miles away from home. sheltee workers also shocked when they checked the dog's from his arkansas home in 2014...
