>> live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> that could have been anybody. that could have been my family. >> what began as a roundup of illegal atv's and dirt bikes ended in tragedy in upper darby. a police chase ends with a six-year-old girl and her grandmother in the hospital. good evening, i'm natasha brown. thank you so much for joining us. eyewitnesses say it was a horrific hit-and-run scene. tonight police tell us a person of interest is in custody following a manhunt. "eyewitness news" reporter alycia nieves is live in the sat center with new information. >> reporter: natasha, what we know is that this started with philadelphia police rounding up dirt bikes and atv's that were being illegally driven on the streets and that's what led to a chase of a dirt bike involved in the wild series of events. it's unclear physical philly pd stopped pursue the atv as it entered up today.

it did that slam into the young girl and her grandmother. police pursuit of a dirt bike driving illegally in the streets ended up with a six-year-old girl and her grandmother getting caught in the crosshairs. >> they was just inside of our store shopping and come out and getting ready to cross the street and the that's when it happened. >> reporter: the dirt bike being chased out of philadelphia at some point crossed into upper darby and barreled down the busy 69th street. it was passing cars by riding along the double yellow line in the middle of the road. near a pedestrian crossing the dirt bike slammed into the child and her grandmother. >> he hit both of them. they went flying in the air and then he flew off the bike. >> reporter: the dirt bike driver left the six-year-old girl and her grandmother in the middle of the street and continued to try and evade authorities. >> the operator of this motor vehicle gets off it with a knife, pulls a knife out and carjacks a vehicle. >> reporter: that stolen vehicle was and abandoned a few blocks a wane the driver

managed to flee again. >> a lot of people are coming forward to say what they saw so hopefully we get the perpetrator. >> i was heartbroken because that could have been anybody. that could have been my family. like people like on these dirt bikes they really don't care about pedestrians or anything like that, they just speeding down the street. >> reporter: and upper darby police say they do have a person in custody that they are questioning. he was found in a wooded area not too far from where the stolen car was dumped. so far police have not filed charges against him. as for the young girl she is in serious condition. her grandmother is listed as being in stable condition. reporting live in the cbs3 sat center alycia nieves cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> philadelphia police were trying to stop that dirt bike as part of a larger roundup. here's a look at some of the vehicles philadelphia police confiscated today during the atv roundup. we're told officers took 30 of those atv's off the streets and made three felony arrests. meantime we're also following breaking news out of

glassboro, new jersey. police tell us that a pedestrian was struck on a route 322 near the rowan university campus. the accident happened just before 10 o'clock. route 322 will be shut down for quite awhile while police investigate this accident scene. of course we'll stay on top of this breaking story, bring you the latest here on television and online as well, cbsphilly.com. we're following this story tonight. police in newark are looking for a man wanted for several groping incidents on the university of delaware's campus. all of these attacks happened within a 90 minute span last night. police say the man grabbed two female students and touched them on their buttocks. two other women called police when they noticed a man following them. the suspect is described as a hispanic or white male in his 20's about 5-foot seven with a beard. and septa police chief is not backing down after vandals tagged two of the transit agency's vehicles overnight. septa says the cars william parked at district seven headquarters at broad and

glenwood streets when this happened. chief thomas nestel tweeted the photos out saying "i'm told graffiti is a cry for attention. the cry worked. somebody will now be getting my undivided attention. an apartment fire in passaic new jersey grows to six alarms leaving 200 people homeless tonight. officials say the flames broke out at 1:00 this afternoon quickly affected all 46 units in the building. the chief evacuated everyone and cordoned off the area to nearby residents as well. he says this fire appears to have started on the fifth floor where throughout the day there had been multiple collapses on the floor. for now displaced residents are being sheltered at a nearby high school gymnasium. and three men are shot in the fair hills section of north philadelphia this evening. it happened at hope and cambria streets. according to police, the shooting happened shortly before 9 p.m. a 28-year-old man was shot two times, another 28-year-old man was shot five times. both are in that critical

condition at this hour t a 24-year-old man was shot once in the stomach and he is stable. so far no arrests in this case not just yet. and protesters gather in philadelphia and all across the nation to call on president trump to release his income tax returns. dozens marched down market street and they also held a rally at city hall. the demonstration was and planned for today april 15th, the traditional deadline for filing income taxes. protesters say the president owes the country the highest level of transparency. and chicago also hosted a huge rally. president trump says he cannot release his income tax returns because he is under i.r.s. audit t he was the first presidential nominee of a major party in more than 40 years to not release his tax returns. civil rights leader jesse jackson says he wants full disclosure. >> if taxation without representation is tyranny, then representation without

taxation authoritarianism. we have guided missiles and misguided leadership. we deserve better. >> the protest did turn violent in california. police in riot gear arrested 15 people on the uc berkeley campus after a huge brawl between supporters and opponents of president trump. police had to use tear gas to disperse that crowd. now to a developing story at this hour, north korea attempted to launch a missile today but it was unsuccessful. the defense department says the missile blue up immediately. the country held a massive parade to show you have its military might. vice president pence will be visiting the region this weekend. eight death row inmates received an 11th hour reprieve

after arkansas. arkansas governor asa hutchinson scheduled the executions to take place before the state's supply of one of its lethal injection drugs expires in two weeks. the inmates filed legal challenges to the timetable and the state's use of midazolam which has been used in botched executions in other states. the state attorney general has vowed to appeal this decision. volunteer firefighters in delaware county are training trying to keep everyone safe and they hope that many will join in this effort. reliance hook and ladder company hosted a burn practice drill in west chester today. firefighters used a hose ladder and other skills to put out a fire. the delaware county fireman's association is sounding the alarm about the shortage of volunteers. disarm they're hoping that this is really going to boost their efforts to bring more people into the ranks. 70 years ago today jackie robinson made history by

the volvo xc90. >> ♪ >> chaos at penn station new york last night. you are watching cell phone video here of waiting passengers as they began to scramble and run when an amtrak police officer used a taser on a.m. suspect in the crowd. people mistook the sounds as gunshots and they began to scurry. about 1200 people were inside at the time because of a problem with a stalled new jersey transit train. about 13 people suffered minor injuries during this chaos. now, let's get you to another developing story tonight. we have been following this all week. united airlines says they are making big changes to their overbooking policy following

the violent removal of a passenger and that went viral. the company says it will now require staff and crew members to check in at least 60 minutes before a flight. it is legal to bump a ticket holding customer off of a flight but typically not once they've ordered boarded the plane. dr. david dao was caught on camera after he was dragged off of a plane by police. he refused to give up his seat for a united employee. dao's family says he plans to file a lawsuit against the airline. nasa scientists released new global maps of earth at night and the results are stunning and breathtaking. nasa says this new view is the clearest composite view of the patterns of human settlement across our planet. this is the first time an image has been released to the public since 2012, christians across the region and are preparing to mark easter sunday tomorrow. >> ♪

archbishop charles chaput celebrated the easter mass at the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul. liturgy of the word liturgy of baptism and liturgy of eucharist. many who have been preparing tend to the church become full members on the night before easter. priests blessed easter food baskets in northern liberties today. "eyewitness news" at the ukrainian catholic cathedral. there were prayers traditional ukrainian singing. the father will differ a message of peace and joy during easter service tomorrow. more than a thousand people felt the easter spirit today for the annual philly rabbit run through the philadelphia zoo. many they wore their bunny ears, their tails and more. and hoppy 5k. >> bunny ears. >> reporter: runners laced up for the fourth annual philly rabbit run. more than 1,000 people registered for the race which will go through the philadelphia zoo all to raise awareness for parkinson's disease. many including liz falcone of havertown had a personal connection to the cause. >> it's important for me to get involved today because my father died of parkinson's and he had it for like 20 some years so it's got to be a cure 'cause i think it's increasing, parkinson's disease is that affecting a lot of lives. people that have it and the family around them. that's why jodi who has parkinson's herself organizes the event each year through the nonprofit shake it off. >> more people have parkinson's disease than msals and md combined. this doctor says there's hope. >> we can't slow it down, right, and that's the problem but it is a slow progression so you have this window of opportunity where you can hope to make things better and so that was really important to me. >> reporter: the effort is

there. this doctor who studied engineering at penn helped develop a brand new wearable device called skied about 30 of whom walked the event this year as part of an experiment. >> for every limb i have a device on it's able to mesh exact how my arm or leg is moving. so the hope is to really help them know exactly how they're doing on a day-to-day basis. >> reporter: a hope that with every step they take, every day that passes will become a little bit brighter. at the philadelphia zoo, anita oh cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> boy that really is a majestic shot there. >> very lovely, that colorful peacock. >> it was a beautiful day for a run, not too hot. >> yeah. >> tomorrow is going to be a little bit different. >> tomorrow not so good running weather. we have a summer like day in store for our easter holiday and temperatures are still very mild at this late hour as we're seeing a warmer air mass build in across the delaware valley.

still up at 60 degrees right now as we get a live look at center city philadelphia. winds out of the south. wind speeds are light but that southerly component to our wind flow will usher in this warmth. it's already ushering in moisture. dewpoints in the middle 50's so you might be noticing a little bit of a muggy factor when you step outside certainly by april standards. temperatures right now we're mild everywhere you look, upper fifty six to low 60's. 62 degrees in reading, still at 64 in dover right now. high temperatures today we topped off right around average in philadelphia, 66 degrees. got to the mid 60's in the lehigh valley. a warmer day down in delaware, 73 degrees the high temperature in dover, already getting a taste of this warmer air mass positioned just to our south and west. that is going to be building its way in as we head throughout the overnight period due to a warm front that could generate a stray shower or even a thunderstorm but for tomorrow, easter warmth is in store with high temperatures soaring up to 85 degrees. not too far off from that record of 90 set back in 2002.

for your easter plans, heading out to church services in the morning, watch out for some areas of fog lingering for the 7 o'clock hour. otherwise very nice sunshine, mild, 62 degrees but you'll have to hold onto your easter bonnet as we head into the 3 o'clock hour. winds will pick up very warm sunshine 84 degrees and then we do have a chance at seeing a thunderstorm pop up as we head mainly into the evening hours tomorrow but talking about a thunderstorm, couple of light sprinkles across parts of burlington county but check out this cell working over the bay. you're definitely hearing rumble of thunder on portions of northern and central delaware and that's how it is headed your way moving eastbound right now. look at all of those lightning strikes. they're getting a pretty good storm rolling through as we head into about the next 45 minutes so heads up in portions of delaware from smyrna down into dover also riverview and harrington. that cell is just upwind at this time but if you look south from center city philadelphia you'll probably get a pretty good light show right now due to that storm moving through but future weather as we wake up tomorrow morning, no storm activity. could see some fog around

especially along the coast. mid to late morning beautiful conditions enjoying in nice easter brunch, some eggs, some breakfast potatoes my personal favorite. as we head into the afternoon hours we'll start to see some clouds moving in. this latest model of this run has taken out some of our enhanced storm activity as we head into the second half of the day. i think we can see storms popping around 5, 6 o'clock and then a secondary round as we head into 9, 10 o'clock. not everyone is going to see storm activity but if you have outdoor plans tomorrow evening definitely want to keep an eye to the sky for one of those developing thunderstorms. as we head into monday morning skies clear out and sunshine returns. overnight tonight a stray shower areas of fog falling back to 59 degrees. for our easter holiday certainly a warm one. 85 degrees t-mostly sunny, getting windy with that chance of a very light late day thunderstorm. across the region a good round of sunshine to start the day and warm temperatures down the shore 78 degrees, 75 in the poconos with that chance of a stray shower or a storm. and forecast highs cruising into the 80's at many of our

reporting sites tomorrow. 83 degrees in trenton, 81 degrees the high temperature on our easter sunday in reading and conditions very nice as we head into monday and tuesday, 74 degrees on monday with breezy conditions. cooler but closer to average on tuesday, 65 degrees. and we might have to break out the umbrella as we head into next wednesday with some scattered showers around but temperatures 60's, 70's and 80's. >> nice. i can settle into that pattern there. >> yes. >> the easter eggs are going to be all good. >> uh-huh. >> and that a you so much lauren. look who is with us. >> hi. >> multi talented joe holden in sports tonight. >> and we have some action here. the phillies losing streak finally coming to an end and should dario saric be looking over his shoulder next season? how did the ohio state football team make this kid's

>> welcome back. game two of the phillies and nats down in d.c. phillies had lost four in a row and turned to jeremy hellickson to help end the streak. everybody warring number 42 today to celebrate the 70th anniversary of jackie robinson breaking the color barrier. odubel herrera with the line drive inside the third baseline. caesar hernandez scores to tie the game. jeremy hellickson went seven innings giving up two runs. in the eighth game tied one ton orrises cesar hernandez and he took former phil joe blanton deep over the right field wall for a two run home or. fightans now taking the lead. the new closer joaquin benoit got ryan zimmerman to pop out to end the game. phillies win four to two and here's joaquin on how to deal with being the closer. >> well, i believe it's a little bit more tension but

for me i treat it the same way as the eighth inning, not trying to do too much, you know, try to minimize the damage. >> for the second time in the last four years, the sixers could have the nba rookie of the year. joel embiid and dario saric are the favorites to take home the award. the sixers waited two years for dario to come over from turkey and he was worth the wait. after the sixers traded ill san ilyasova to the hawks dario averaged 17 points and seven boards in the final 25 games of the season. sixers gm brian colangelo says they want another power forward who can shoot the three. >> we're going to keep looking for shooters and guys that hopefully can do other things, defend, run, you know, stretch the floor, open things up, i think the stretch four position is something, you know, backing up dario or starting in front of the dario, which ever it is, if we can find someone that's

>> ♪ >> welcome back everyone. carrie fisher's daughter bill lord paid special tribute to her late mother at a fan event marking the 40th anniversary of george lucas' space saga "star wars." lord appeared on stage at the "star wars" celebration in orlando decked out in princess leia white. lord became part of the "star wars" family when she appeared in "star wars the force awakens" alongside her mother and grandmother debbie reynolds. >> my mom used to say she never knew where princess leia ended and carrie fisher began. she went from being an unknown actress the daughter of debbie reynolds to princess leia a character synonymous with the idea of a strong woman a soldier a fighter. >> the "star wars" celebration runs through tomorrow and includes a myriad of events for fans many of which can be streamed online.

[laughter] >> big baby 15 months later.
