republican president. plus, stephen colbert pads his already impressive resume, performing a duet with one of the best opera singers alive. we'll break it down during the show. but first, let's get to the news live at 5:30 a.m. here at 30 rock in new york city. there's a new dynamic unfolding in the republican race for president as mitt romney looks to undercut rick santorum's appeal with the conservative base. with the michigan and arizona primaries just four days away, romney is hammering santorum for admitting he supported bills in congress that went against his principles stemgs from wednesday's debate where the former pennsylvania senator said despite his reservations on the issue he voted in favor of educational reform to help president bush and the party. romney said it's another example of business as usual in washington. >> i hope you watched the debate last night. it was kind of fun. i enjoyed it. it was kind of an interesting
night. i didn't expect what happened. what happened was, we saw in this case senator santorum explain most of the night why he did or voted for things he disagreed with. and he talked about this as being taking one for the team. i wonder which team he was taking it for. all right. my team is the american people. not the insiders in washington. and i'll fight for the people of america, not special interests. >> rick santorum is not shying away from his comments. looking to draw a distinction between congress and the white house. >> as you said in the debate last night, i'm going to take one for the team. how can we be sure you won't take one for the team again on something this bad? >> because i'll be the team leader not a team member. president of the united states is the team leader and when you're responsible for leading the team as the president is, i think you're clear you look at the agenda i put forward this is something the president of the united states ran on. george bush ran on, you know,
reforming the education system. this was one of his signature issues in the campaign. >> with education front and center, santorum attacked president obama's push to send more young people to college. >> the bottom line is, if you look at 62% of kids who go into college with a faith commitment leave without it. i understand why barack obama wants to send every kid to college. they're indoctrination -- >> absolutely. >> and, you know, i've floated the idea and trying to figure out how we can make it work of somehow or another requiring, you know, colleges and universities who receive public dollars, to have intellectual diversity. >> and that super pacs continue to dominate this election cycle the pro romney group restore our future is coming under fire for an ad airing in michigan and arizona. this super pac ad is a word for word repeat of a 2007 romney campaign ad with a new tag at the end, a watch dug group says
the ad violates campaign finance laws that prohibits a super pac from republishing campaign material. restore our future says the ad is legal saying in part, quote, we purchased the rights to the footage from its owner cold harbor films which did not entail interacting with the romney campaign. the group is run by several former romney campaign staffers and colleagues. in other political news, rising gas prices are quickly becoming a major issue in the 2012 campaign with president obama trading new attacks with the republicans over the economic implications. in a speech from miami yesterday, the president insisted there are, quote, no quick fixes to solving america's energy challenges. despite what his opponents are saying on the trail. >> only in politics do people root for bad news, do they greet bad news so enthusiastically.
we may more, they're licking their chops. you can bet that since it's an election year they're already dusting off their three-point plan for $2 gas. anybody who tells you that we can drill our way out of this problem doesn't know what they're talking about or just isn't telling you the truth. that's the easiest thing in the world to make phony election year promises about gas prices. what's harder is to make a sustained commitment to tackle a program. we're not going to overnight solve the problem of world oil markets. there is no silver bullet. never has been. and part of the problem is, what politicians pretend there is, we put off making the tough choices to develop new energy sources and become more energy efficient. the president called for a, quote, all of the above response to rising gas prices including increasing oil production, developing aller in tative energy sources and enforcing stricter fuel efficiency standards. according to aaa gas prices have
jumped another $3.3 cents bringing the average to $3.61 a gallon. the president's re-election team is airing this 30-second ad in michigan, painting president obama as a champion of the auto industry, while taking a jab at the candidates hoping to replace him. >> made in america, for generations of michigan auto workers, it's more than a slogan. it's a way of life. but when a million jobs were on the line, every republican candidate turned their back, even said, let detroit go bankrupt. not him. >> don't bet against the american auto industry. >> now, a retool, restructured industry is back, because of the grit and sacrifice of michigan workers. >> don't bet against the american worker. >> i'm barack obama, and i approve this message. >> that ad is airing in several michigan cities ahead of the republican primary on tuesday. turning overseas, afghan president hamid karzai is calling for restraint by protesters today following an apology from president obama
over the burning of the muslim holy books at a u.s. air base. the incident triggered three days of violent demonstrations, including a protest yesterday where two american troops were killed by a man wearing an afghan army uniform. the taliban is urging protesters to attack international forces and even some members of parliament are encouraging jihad. in an effort to stop the violence, president obama wrote a letter to afghan president hamid karzai reading in part, quote, i wish to express my deep regret for the reported incident. i extend to you and the afghan people my sincere apologies. the error was inadvertentent. i assure you that we will take the appropriate steps to avoid any recurrence to include holding those accountable. the u.s. soldiers who burned the korans and other religious materials say they didn't realize the significance of what they were throwing away. the presidential candidate newt gingrich is slamming the white house's response to the incident. >> president obama surrendered
twice today. i think it deserves to be brought to the country's attention. the more outrageous involves the killing of two young americans and wounding of four others in afghanistan. now, apparently there was an incident where an amount of radical islamist materials being burned apparently the koran was part of that, that has now been blown into a huge incident by various fanatics in afghanistan. the president apologized for the burning. but i haven't seen the president demand that government of afghanistan apologize for the killing of two young americans. he has consistently apologizing to people who do not deserve the apology of the president of the united states, period. >> nato is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the book burning. back here at home, maryland is set to become the eighth state to legalize gay marriage. governor martin o'malley is
expected to sign the measure into law some time this week. it follows a close 25-22 vote in the state senate yesterday, after a similar bill died dell . washington state approved same-sex marriage joining massachusetts, connecticut, iowa, vermont, new hampshire, new york, and the district of columbia. in maryland, opponents of the measure are vowing to challenge it through a referendum in the november elections. still ahead on "way too early," the miami heat find a cure for lin sanity. highlights from the knicks road trip to south beach are just ahead. plus, you know jon stewart couldn't resist on weighing in on romney's botched "seinfeld" reference during the debate. that clip and a check of weather when "way too early" comes right back.
