firefighters are calling it unprecedented the powerful valley fire is rapidly spreading in at mare of 24 hours this weekend it went from nothing to larger than the city of cleave lapped. it devoured 50,000 acres. g gadi shswartz joins us from the heart of the flames. >> reporter: this is main street and middletown. there's all kinds of torching going on, house after house, building after building going up in flames. we made our way through what looked like the gates of hell. this was a neighborhood and now it's gone. all around, loud explosions from gasoline and thousand gallon propane tanks. you can feel the heat as the fire rips down main street, the roar of the fire is deafening and across the street is an apartment complex just started

week, two non-politicians are leading the pack. donald trump is the favorite with 33% of registered republicans. neurosurgeon ben carson is second with 20%. jeb bush, ted cruz and marco rubio round out the top five and the mud slinging between candidates continues. ben carson seems to be trump's most recent target. on sunday trump questioned carson's ability to be a leader. >> i'm a deal maker. i'll make great deals for the country. ben can't do that. he's a doctor and not a deal maker and i'll make great deals for our country. >> trump may think he's a good deal maker but fellow gop candidate carly fiorina doesn't think he's a good leader. >> i think donald trump is an entertainer and i think i am a leader, and so what i do is talk to the american people about the issues they care about and i think they hear what i'm talking about. >> meanwhile, on the democratic side, bernie sand certifies surging in the polls.

last night he held an event in greensboro, north carolina. there are between 3,000 to 4,000 fans in the crowd. the new republican/abc news poll shows among democratic voters, hillary clinton is still leading with 42%. bernie sanders 24% and joe biden who hasn't officially entered the race has 21%. clinton may be leading in that poll but other polls show senator sanders is ahead in iowa and new hampshire. this comes as clinton tries to move past questions about her private e-mail serber. nbc's kristen welker has more on a new development concerning clinton's personal e-mail account. >> reporter: "the washington post" reporting the company that managed her private e-mail server says it has no knowledge of the server being wiped meaning some of clinton's 30,000 e-mails she says were deleted may be recoverable. the clinton campaign isn't commenting on that report. it's a topic clinton has tried to downplay in the past. >> what, like with a cloth or something? well, no.

>> reporter: the issue continues to take a toll. the latest cbs news poll has bernie sappeders surnling ahead of clinton topping her in iowa 43% to 33% and in new hampshire, 52-30. vice president biden, who hasn't announced a run, comes in third in both matchups. >> i think we are generating a lot of excitement not just in iowa and new hampshire, but all across this country, and that means larger voter turnouts. >> reporter: clinton holds a more than 20-point lead in south carolina, the first southern primary and majority of democrats polled say the e-mail issue just doesn't matter. >> that was kristen welker reporting. ministers with the european union will meet today to discuss the ongoing refugee crisis there. meanwhile, germany is shutting its doors to the tens of thousands of people fleeing war in the middle east. the germans have been hospitable thus far but now they admit they just can't handle all the people seeking asylum. neither can hungary, taken shows. austria's chancellor liken

these pictures amazing. time lapse video from maricopa, arizona. these thunderstorms rock and rolled all weekend long and some had enough wind to kick up a little dust storm there. overnight additional showers and storms in arizona, now ending around the phoenix area so we're just about done with that. in the east we had a rainy, miserable sunday in areas of maine, that is finally cleared out. there's still some leftover cold showers. temperatures in the 40s and 50s in the adirondacks with light rain ending during the day, too. the setup, still scattered showers and rain, monsoonal flow up through the four corner region. dry and sunny in areas of the east, feels like fall. don't get used to it. quickly temperatures flip back

to hear on the trail. >> do you think during this debate we're going to see this week, him not be so nice to try to combat what trump is saying? >> no, he said he's going to run a positive campaign and i actually believe him. dr. carson is at his heart just like a really nice guy. when you listen to him talk about his past, his future, what he wants to do for the fridcoun he's not combative, nothing like trump. that shows an interesting contrast and i think we'll see the polls change. trump is going to after him and carson for his team they're hoping he'll deflect it >> how big of a debate is this for donald trump? in the past all of this seemed new and novel. i'm the greatest and we're going to do so much winning you'll get tired of winning. we've heard all this but we want to hear specifics. how important is this debate to donald trump in. >> the last debate in cleveland watching people watch this, they were looking for other people. is there anybody else and donald trump still won the day, still sort of new and novel like you say but i think this debate he's

♪ now it's my line, good morning, it's monday, september the 14th. i'm louis burgdorf. donald trump is gaining on hillary clinton according to the latest polling out this morning. "the washington post"/abc news poll found trump to be the favorite of 33% of republican voters, up nine points since mid-july and 9 point increase since late may shortly before he announced his candidacy. dr. ben carson in second with 20%, a combined 53% for the top two outsiders running. everyone else is in single digits. looking further down the field to tenth place is wisconsin governor scott walker. now polling at 2% nationally, in mid-july he was in third place with 11%. there are a
