place to be. we are at riverside park. take a look over here with me. you can see the water here just pouring out looking really good for kids to play in later this afternoon. this heat wave, once it kicks off, three consecutive days here of 90 or above. this was saturday when this started. it was 92 degrees. you can see the sunshining about. fun fact, so far new york city hit 90 or higher on nine days so far. that is higher lane last year's eight days. humidity makes the real feel dangerous. it feel too hot for children that don't notice how hot it is and the elderly and your pets. don't forget about them, especially come the afternoon. so, you know the drill, you want to drink plenty of water, wear light clothing and don't

it's posted on our facebook page. we will have a live report from staten island in the next half hour. now on to breaking news. police just announced an arrest in the murder of morgan freeman's granddaughter. edena hynes was stabbed multiple times yesterday morning in washington heights. lamar davenport is charged with second agree murder. a.j. ross has more from washington heights. >> like 3:00 a.m. i heard a guy yelling and i heard a woman scream. >> reporter: a loud commotion in the middle of the night outside of this apartment quickly caught the attention of people who lived nearby. >> screaming, jesus christ is born. i go to the window and i see him on top of a woman and i couldn't really see what was going on. then the police came. two police cars came and arrested the guy. >> reporter: a 911 call brought

police to the scene within minutes where they discovered edena hines with multiple stab wounds to her chest and body. she was rushed to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead. the granddaughter of well known actor morgan freeman she graduated from nyu's acting program. shocked friends and fans offered condolences on social media throughout the day as morgan freeman issued the following statement saying the world will never know her artistry and talent and how much she had to offer. her friends and family were fortunate enough to know what she meant as a person. her star will shine bright in our thoughts, hearts and prayers. may she rest in peace. >> the nypd literally minutes ago announced that lamar davenport of washington heights has been arrested on second- degree murder charges.

he is being held at columbian presbyterian hospital. the search is on for an escaped prison nor in east harlem. austin stevens was arrested at a building yesterday morning. during his escort to the station house, he shoved an officer, ran away in his handcuffs. he is the third prisoner to escape since june 23rd. police eventually captured the other suspects. a man accused of kidnapping an 18-year-old woman in queens faces several charges including 21-year-old jonathan cornell was taken to the hospital for self-inflicted stab wounds. police say he kidnapped the young woman at knifepoint saturday. cornell is facing robbery, kidnapping and weapons charges. service is back up and running on the ronkonkoma branch of the l.i.r.r. after a deadly plane crash that damaged the tracks in nassau county. before 8:00 yesterday morning

the pilot of a single-engine plane headed from westhampton to morristown, new jersey. the fiery crash left the tracks badly damaged in one of the busiest areas of the lopping island railroad. buses were brought in to get riders from station to station. >> a lot of people are upset and wanted to rage and just get home or get to work or get to the city. >> the pilot of the plane was killed in the crash but investigators say the way he landed did allow for his passenger to make it out alive. the faa is investigating the cause of the crash. donald trump will be off the campaign trail today. he is reporting for jury duty in manhattan. he is coming off a weekend of cheers at the iowa state fair. trump and hillary clinton and others were there courting voters. trump offered helicopter rides to children there and offered

steady at 30.11. yesterday's high was 93. we are looking at near record heat the next couple of days. 96 today breaks the record of 95. tomorrow's high is 93 possibly and a record high tomorrow is 94. we are looking at a spotty storm possible today. more likely we will see that wednesday, maybe into thursday. but the humidity will hang around really all week long. it will be a hot week. 72 at north port, massapequa, 73 east hampton. 63 at monticello. it's kind of cool up to the north and west. it's a little on the humid side and up here in the north and west suburbs you will see that haze hanging in there, particularly around the wooded of thing. lakes. it will be a hot day today. we are not looking at today there is a little moisture. some of the models are showing a pop up storm this afternoon

the chicago air and water show happening saturday. he died from his injuries yesterday afternoon. army officials say hood was a 14 year u.s. army veteran who served five tours of duty in iraq and afghanistan. the other diver is expected to recover from a broken leg. this morning one person is in critical hot-air balloon accident that happened in pennsylvania. the balloon carrying two passengers and a pilot saturday night landed safely. but when it was deflating, the top blue over the balloon hitting power lines. all three people inside the basket suffered electrical burns as a result. released. the two passengers remain in the hospital. a thief targeting a classic car show made off with a piece of pizza history. surveillance video showing a truck pulling a trailer out of a parking lot in michigan. inside the trailer is this 1971 johns. the car was sold by the founder

on the fdr northbound in the 70s reports of a collision there. l.i.r.r., ronkonkoma branch, the problems from yesterday completely cleared. everything on time. new jersey transit on time. metro north waterbury branch, ongoing maintenance. the l.i.e., here is the l.i.e. through little neck parkway. traffic is moving okay. finally going to the other camera, inbound george washington bridge, traffic is moving smoothly. alternate side parking rules are in effect. back to you, michelle, ken. >> thank you, debbie check now, the search is on this morning for a man that allegedly snuck in a home on staten island and raped a 7-year-old girl. eyewitness news reporter dray clark is live at the 121st precinct. >> good morning, ken. at one point police had daniel knee eat to -- nieto in custody. it wasn't until after his arrest that they learned of the

alleged rape of a 7-year-old girl. this is a look at him on august the 6th. police say he entered in a family's home through an unlocked backdoor. went into the 7-year-old girl's bedroom where investigators say he raped her. the family discovered nieto inside their home. they immediately called police. he ran but police found him not too far away from where that family lives. again, he was charged with trespassing and released and only later did detectives learn of the claim that he raped a 7- year-old girl. the family said they have never seen nieto, a complete strapinger. police want to find this guy. he is out there lurking and this appears to be a crime of opportunity that turned into an alleged rape. if you have any idea of who he is or where he might be this call. eyewitness news. >> all right, dray, thank you.

we have the suspect's picture posted on our web site abc7ny if you want to take another look. more than 2,000 people at this early hour have already shared it on our facebook page. rescue officials spotted the wreckage of a plane that crashed in a remote area of indonesia. authorities say the flight carrying 54 people crashed into a mountain sunday. the plane was missing for several hours after losing contact with air traffic control. rain and fog are hampering ground teams trying to reach the crash sight. at least four people were killed when two small planes collided. the planes caught fire when they hit the ground and broke apparently part. the wreckage and bodies scattered across a quarter mile area. the faa and national transportation safety board are investigating the collision. a police stand off ended in new jersey with the suspect and

two victims dead. authorities say the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound more than five hours after barricading himself inside a home in warren. the man fatally shot a man and woman before tig his own life -- taking his own life. >> i heard a series of loud pops or bangs. i wasn't sure at that time that it sounded like gunshots. a quick quiet then three more sounds. >> police have not released the identity of the shooter or victims. it's unclear how all of these people, if they are, related. happening today, donald trump will appear in a manhattan courtroom. the republican front-runner has been called to jury duty. immigration reform. the plan would have mexico pay for completing the border wall. as he told nbc's "meet the

noontime 92 and 96 this afternoon. normal high this time of the year is 83. the real feel when you tack on the humidity, it will feel like 100 today. debbie duhaime is in the traffic center looking at the commute in for heather. how is it going? >> we have a problem in queens on the l.i.e. we go to the webcam. volume on the l.i.e. westbound into the grand central parkway at kew gardens an accident blocking one lane. traffic is really bumper to bumper through queens on the l.i.e. let's go to the maps. brooklyn bridge into brooklyn an accident on the city side but do watch for some delays there as well. keep in mind if you are heading to the fdr drive northbound through the 70s, two lanes are blocked now. an accident blocking a couple of lanes northbound fdr up through the 70s. on the southbound new york thruway down to 15-a in sloatsburg an accident. northbound thruway at 16 in harriman, a stalled car in the

in china, about 800 people whose homes were devastated in the massive explosion in china demanded the government buy their homes, former residences and pay. the blast killed 114 people with 70 still missing including 64 firefighters and six policeman. about 1,000 firefighters responded to the disaster. authorities confirm there were several hundred tons of sodium cyanide in the warehouse. it was allowed to store no more than ten tons at a time. there is a chance bp is not finished paying for the gulf oil spill. the country's original settlement amounted to $18.7 billion. according to the new orleans advocate, to universities have outstanding claims. southern university and university of louisiana systems

clear skies to the great lakes. it's building in as the good old bermuda high. today our computer model, our guidance, futurecast is showing a pop up thunderstorm coming around late today, away from the beach, near the city, passaic, bergen, rockland county, a pop up storm. you may find one of those. then we clear out overnight. we really don't see the threat coming back until we get to wednesday, thursday. i wanted to show you the heat index for the afternoon. 95 in the city. 98 morristown. of this. it will get close to 100 around a good portion of the area. that's a land breeze coming across. tomorrow afternoon, the heat index will be in the 90s to mid- 90s around much of the tri- state area into the afternoon tomorrow. report heat today. 96, break the old mark of 95 set in 1944, a hot year across new jersey.

one person is in critical condition after a hot-air balloon accident in pennsylvania. the balloon carrying two passengers and a pilot landed safely. but when it was deflating, the top, the actual balloon blew over hitting power lines. all three people suffered electrical burns as a result. the pilot was treated and released. the two passengers are in the hospital. beachgoers in long island found themselves up close and personal with several sharks. a fisherman said he intended to catch sea bass or fluke. instead he caught four or five sharks. it took him about 10 minutes to reel in the catch but each shark was released back into the ocean. bill evans joins us now with the accuweather forecast. >> let's look outside, we. we look at the chrysler building looking to the east, to the sunrise. chrysler building brought to you by, appropriately enough, chrysler.
