scene where firefighters are working to get it under control. a woman and her two young children are in a new jersey hospital this morning after they were hit by a car. live with updates on their conditions. temperatures are expected to top 90 again today making our latest heat wave official. so, when can we expect any relief. we are asking for relief? >> wait until december, you will have relief. >> good morning, i'm lori stokes. >> thank you for joining us, i'm ken rosato. it's tuesday, september 1st. you are never more than seven minutes away from weather and traffic. >> digging out of three feet of no? february, when do we get relief. >> we will get up to the low 90s during the day. we have an air quality alert in effect in new jersey from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. because the air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups. avoid strenuous activity during

the hottest time of the day. big ridge of high pressure in control acting as a heat and humidity pump. down to 59 at monticello. one thing we are watching north and west of the city is patchy dense fog. that will be burning off as soon as the sun comes up. 78 at 10:00. 87 by midday. how about 90 by 4:00. topping out around 92 by 2:00 in the afternoon. the wind into the southeast by later on today will provide relief at the beaches. that will be a sea breeze and that will keep beaches in the 80s. everywhere will feel like the mid-90s. we will tell you when we get relief in the full forecast coming up. heather has a look at the commute. >> we go back to the maps and talk about what is happening on the bruckner expressway. as you head on to the southbound side into 138th street, you will find and overturned cement truck. the northbound side they are dealing with police activity

there, tending to the accident on the southbound side. all lanes are subject to closure as you go through that spot. an accident on the hutch south of mill road with another accident. we have alternate side of the street parking rules in effect today. lori, over to you. >> thank you. breaking news in the bronx. a big fire quickly tore through several homes early this morning. eyewitness news reporter dray clark tweeted this photo from the scene in our last half hour. he is joining us now from the katonah park east section with the latest. dray? >> reporter: good morning, lori. the fire is contained but technically still not under control. the fire department wants to make sure that all the hot spots are extinguished before calling the fire under control. the sense of urgency out here has been scaled back significantly. let's show you video from earlier this morning when the fire was at its peak. a lot of smoke and flames coming from the location. the fire broke out after 4:00

this morning inside a garage and quickly spread to two adjacent homes. within eight minutes of the first call for help, the fire grew to three alarms. the fire department here within two minutes and got everyone out of the building without injury. so many people worried about their belongings, we talked to one woman that said she ran out of the building running for her life. >> i look out the window and everybody is talking about get out, get out. >> reporter: who knocked on your door? do you know? >> not now. i can't think. one of the people in the building that live here. >> reporter: you live in the blue building. >> the one that is burning. >> reporter: on the first floor? >> yes. >> reporter: do you have any idea about your belongings? >> i don't know about that. everything is in there burnt up. >> reporter: yeah. that woman wandering around wondering what happened

to her stuff, if she lost everything. we know the building where she did live, the fire department said everything inside is gone. that was a 16 room building. the fire department is still out here. the activity has been scaled bang signature never -- scaled back significantly. they are putting out the hot spots to make sure nothing else flares up. in terms of what sparked the fire, that remains under investigation. the fire department will be out here quite some time getting things wrapped up. for now live in the bronx, dray clark, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. to new jersey at this point where a mother and her two young children were hit by a car trying to cross the street. this happened in edgewood court in lakewood last night. eyewitness news reporter kala rama is live at jersey shore medical center in neptune. kala? >> reporter: good morning. three people were taken to the hospital. i can tell you this morning

that the mom is now in stable condition. her two children in serious condition this morning. let me show you the scene in lakewood. in the middle of route 9 you can see the stroller that the woman was pushing with two children inside laying on its side. route 9 was closed for four hours last night. it is now back open. police tell us the mom was pushing her two children in that stroller and the three were walking across route 9 when a black town car crashed into them seriously injuring her children. the driver of the lincoln town car was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out but was not seriously hurt. police tell me that he was interviewed but so far no charges have been filed. it's unclear if the three were in the crosswalk at the time. live in neptune on the jersey shore, kala rama, channel 7

eyewitness news. >> thank you. breaking news out of texas. 6 people arrested after their flight from los angeles erupted into a wild brawl. the jet was headed for chicago but it was forced to divert to amarillo where police were waiting on the ground. all six men were traveling together. it's not clear how the fight started but once it got going, there seemed to be no stopping it terrifying other passengers. the men were arrested as soon as the jet touched down. that flight is still on the ground in amarillo and the fbi is on the scene. the fourth prisoner to escape from nypd custody this summer is still on the loose. police brass not happy. 23-year-old tiffany neumann has not been seen since ditching authorities sunday. an officer stepped away from her to use the bathroom.

police commissioner william bratton is livid. >> i will not tolerate these continued lapses in what should be basic policing, care and custody of a prisoner. >> no excuse for it. it's embarrassing. she is not a mastermind criminal. due to inattentiveness and carelessness. >> police believe she is heading to los angeles. she is not considered dangerous. the officer that was watching her has been another cooling tower tested positive for the legionnaires bacteria. this time it's in manhattan. it is the convent of the sacred heart school on the upper east side. the school has disinfected the tower. they found the bacteria that causes the disease. no reports of anyone getting sick. state department released another big batch of previously unseen e-mails from hillary clinton's private e-mail account.

it's the largest installment of e-mails so far. the former secretary of state and presidential candidate maintained e-mails were not classified when they were sent to that account. among the e-mails, the state department deemed 150 as classified and they have been sensored. the state department released more than 13,000 pages of clinton's e-mails. you are never more than seven minutes away from weather and traffic. >> past the empire state building you can see to one world trade. north and west of the city there are patchy dense areas of fog. that will be burning off in the next hour or two. we have temperatures in the 80s rising quickly. by 1:00 p.m. 89. 92 by 2:00 in the afternoon.

inland with the humidity, these temperatures will feel like the mid-90s. at the beach we will get a sea breeze. that sea breeze comes in later in new york city actually lowering the temperature down to 84 by 7:00 this evening. full accuweather seven-day forecast coming up. there is relief in sight if you don't like the heat and humidity. >> no relief traveling through the bronx. news copter 7 is up above this problem on the bruckner. shannon, that looks like a nasty accident. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this cement truck overturned splashed into the divider on the southbound bruckner. this separates the exit for the east 138th from the bruckner itself. when he overturned he dumped cement on the roadway as well. you can see heavy duty tow truck trying to get in place to get this cleared up. it will take a while. for a while the left lane getting through while they position this guy.

president obama is heading into the second day of his trip to alaska and today he will call for an accelerated program to buy and build new ice breakers for the coast guard. it's part of an effort to compete with other nations,

especially russia in asserting a hold on parts of the rapidly changing arctic. the u.s. has just too heavy ice breakers. the russians have 41. president obama hasn't made post white house plans public but the head of his alma mater may have let a big sick accurate slip. columbia university told the school's freshman class that the president, a 1983 alumn is heading back to the ivy league school. there has not been official confirmation from the white house but the comments at the schools convocation were telling. >> he was announcing what will happen the next few years including obama coming to columbia. he was kind of vague but we heard rumors that he will be a professor at the law school. all the student body erupted in cheers.

>> university spokesman said the comments add convocation follow a may 12th statement by the barack obama maintain that it intends to maintain a presence at columbia. >> he has options. >> gorbachev is a professor there, too. all the former world leaders there. let's check in with meteorologist jeff smith. >> fairly pleasant out here. we will have a hot and humid afternoon. this would be the time to get out and do your morning workout. not during the hottest time of the day, not just because of the heat and humidity but air quality is not that great. we have air quality alert in effect for new jersey for that time period. we head up a few hundred feed and look at the sun just starting to come up over the horizon. the wind is calm. we don't have much of a breeze out here. 80 the high for september. we will go ten above that. not quite the record of 97 set in 1953.

the nasdaq and s&p 500 closed lower. >> in fact, futures are down 346 points at this point. in asia, nikkei closed down nearly 4%. hong kong's -- hong kong hang seng index. doze sense of companies rely on the bank's data to determine the correct value for their funds. the problem has been going on the past two weeks. the bank has been calculating values by hand. happening today, people in northern new jersey are facing severe water worries. united water new jersey is urging customers to conserve water during the stretch of warm weather. the company says that august was one of the driest summer months in the garden state in more than 90 years. reservoirs serving bergen, hudson counties are at less than 50% capacity.

breaking news in the bronx. a quick moving massive fire caused several fires and damaged two homes this morning. this is a look at flames the firefighters are battling a couple of hours ago. we are live on the scene. we are following more breaking news in the bronx. a cement truck accident leading to major delays on the bruckner expressway. shannon sohn is live over the

not only do they have to use this heavy duty tow truck to remove the truck, somehow they have to get the cement barrel removed from the roadway then clean up the cement. this will be out there for quite some time. let's head to the maps and pinpoint where this is. this is the bruckner southbound near 138th street. you saw only the left lane is getting by. all lanes are subject to closure as they try to get this cleared away. bruckner another accident. street cleaning rules are in effect today. ken over to you. >> heather, thank you. we have been following this breaking story all morning. a destructive fire in the bronx. >> flames tore through several homes and cars. firefighters now have the upper hand. >> dray clark joins us live with an update. >> good morning. the fire is contained and now official upped control. you can see firefighters are

still inside the main fire building here extinguishing hot spots. this is where the main fire happened. the deputy chief says everything on the inside was destroyed. you can see what is left on the outside. here is pictures from earlier this morning when there was a lot of flames and smoke shooting from inside the two homes that caught fire. the fire broke out after 4:00 a.m. and quickly spread to two adjacent homes. within eight minutes of the first call for help, the fire grew to three alarms. the fire department was able to get everyone out of the two adjacent homes quickly without injury. one firefighter was taken to st. barnabas with a minor injury. meaning while, we spoke to one man that lives inside one of the buildings. he talked about running out of the home after he realized there was a large fire just outside his door. >> flames were coming from the garage next door.

then they said, you know, find a fire extinguisher, find water. and, so, i started to fill up buckets of water, anything i could. that seemed to be kind of stupid because the fire had already grown through the entire side of the building. >> reporter: back live you can see firefighters on the roof of one of the homes here. they are focused on that particular area because a moment ago we did see smoke coming from that section of the roof that quickly -- they doused the area with water and now no smoke at all. at this particular home here, there are 16 rooms being rented to people. all of those people living inside the building were able to get out without injury. in terms of what happened here, how this fire started, that claims under investigation. the fire is contained and under control. firefighters will be here for quite some time trying to get an idea of what sparked that fire inside the garage.

live in the bronx this morning, dray clark, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> dray, thank you. new this morning, we have video to show you of four dangerous crooks who have been terrorizing businesses in the bronx. here is a look at the suspects that police are trying to find. police say that they are responsible for six armed robberies around the borough since april. five took place during a one week period last month. they got away with $3,000 in cash, cell phones and other items. no one has been hurt. new information on a day care center scandal on long island where police arrested two teachers. kathleen culver and sarah dawber are accused of abusing children at side by side day care. police say they force fed and slammed children on to the floor. two mothers say they are pulling their children out of side by side day care. >> i am not comfortable leaving

my child in a place where something like this goes on. to me it says they don't care about the quality of people that they are hiring to take care of these children, where they are special needs or regular children. i am not comfortable with what i am hearing. >> they work inside the infant room for children ranging in age from 4 months to 18 months old. in suffolk county, a new york state real estate executive has been arraigned on dwi charges after a deadly car crash in the hamptons. police say shawn ludwick was arrested in sag harbor. they say he lost control of his porsche and hit a utility pole. his passenger, paul hanson was killed. ludwig's car was found a quarter mile from the crash site. in addition to the dwi charge he is facing felony counts of leaving the scene of a fatal crash. the funeral is today for

happening today, what could be the toughest new car seat law in the country goes into effect in new jersey. the new regulations are designed to cut down on child deaths due to car accidents. the biggest killer of children under the age of 14. children will remain in rear facing seats until they are at least two years old or weigh more than 30 pounds. children will have to be in a booster seat until they are eight years old or 57 inches tall. >> rear facing provides the most protection for the child's head and neck. >> if they are forward facing

>> patchy fog north and west of the city. in the city visibility is decent looking to lower manhattan and one world trade there. we take a spin on the weather wheel, temperatures are in the mid-70s. rising to 80 at 10:00 in the morning. low 90s by 2:00 in the afternoon. that will feel like the mid- 90s, especially inland away from the beaches. there will be a sea breeze developing later on in the day and right at the shore. this will drop temperatures into the low 80s. the see breeze develops about 5:00, 6:00. we will go up to newscopter 7. shannon sohn is showing us the overturned dump truck. heavy duty is there to remove the dump truck but they have to remove the cement barrel. it poured cement all over the roadway. in addition to that they have to clean up that mess.

they need a flatbed fort drum carrying cement then sanitation to come in to clean up the cement that was freshly poured quite by accident on the bruckner. this is happening near east 138th street. they are trying to keep the left lane open when they can but all lanes are subject to closure and delays on the bruckner go end to end and ramp up to the sheraton expressway, cross bronx and on the left side that is the bruckner boulevard exit. that is your alternate not looking much better. reporting live over the bronx, shannon sohn, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> shannon. that your. new this morning, police need your help finding a driver who hit a pedestrian, stopped to look at her then took off. it happened two weeks ago in the bronx. the woman was hit by a honda backing up on jackson avenue near st. mary's park in mott haven. the driver gets out, looks at the woman and gets on his cell phone and then back in his car and pulls away. the woman is okay. . another update on breaking news in the bronx. >> an overturned truck causing a lot of troubles on the bruckner expressway. shannon sohn is live over the scene. >> reporter: this has been a rough one. you can see they have the heavy duty tow in place with the truck. but the drum that held the cement is still there. we can expect all lanes will be shut down at some point. the left lane gets through but the damage done as you head southbound on the bruckner. these delays wrap around from the sheraton to the cross bronx. it is a mess. reporting live over the bronx, shannon sohn, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> all right, shannon, thank you.

firefighters are battling fierce flames and low water pressure issues at the scene of a big fire in the bronx. >> eyewitness news reporter dray clark is live on the scene there. dray? >> reporter: yeah, good morning, guys. despite an issue with the fire department, the they got on top of the fire quickly. it is contained. take a look at the pictures from earlier this morning. you can see a lot of smoke and towering flames from the site here. the fire broke out after 4:00 a.m. on bryant avenue. it started in a garage and quickly spread to two adjacent apartment believes growing to three alarms. the fire department evacuated both buildings. all of those residents evacuated without injury. one fir was taken to st. barnabas with a minor injury. the cause of the fire is under investigation. live in the bronx, dray clark, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you, dray. a mother and her two young children are recovering after being hit by a car in new jersey.

>> it happened on route 9 in lakewood. eyewitness news reporter kala rama is live with an update. kala? >> reporter: yes, lori. those three people were brought to the jersey shore medical center. those two young kids are in serious condition. that mom is in stable condition. let me show you the scene overnight in lakewood. you can see here that the stroller that mom was pushing across the street with her two kids across route 9, a black town car crashed into them seriously injuring the two children. the driver of the car was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out but not seriously hurt. police say they interviewed the driver. so far no charges have been filed. we are live in neptune, new jersey, kala rama, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> kala, thank you. another cooling tower has tested positive for legionella bacteria. that is what caused the recent legionnaires outbreak in the

bronx. this time it's in manhattan at the convent of the sacred heart school. the school says it has disinfected the cooling tower and there are no reports of anyone getting sick from it. police want your help catching four dangerous criminals. they are responsible for six armed robberies in bronx businesses since april including five during a one week period last month. they got away with $3,000 in cash, cell phones and other items. nobody has been hurt. >> another check on the commute with heather o'rourke. >> we have been telling you about this accident on the bruckner. newscopter 7 is still up above. shannon sohn showing us pictures. looks like they have removed the truck carrying the cement barrel. however, now they have the clear the cement barrel and clean up the street. the southbound side of the bruckner at 138th street looks like at this point all lanes are closed down as they start the cleanup. another problem on the bruckner
