local only 42nd to 96 with a rail at 72nd. on the 5 train alternate side parking rules suspended. over at the george washington bridge, inbound construction become cleared. still seeing construction at the lincoln and holland as well. 95 northbound towards 13, it's construction and if you're heading to the new jersey turnpike northbound up through 11 and 12, construction being cleared. let's go outside. i want to show you a look at route 18 up to east brunswick, it's that ongoing work. alternate side parking rules are suspended city wide. back over to you. thank you debbie. it's 4:32. we are following two tragic stories from the overnight. two pedestrians hit and killed. both happening on the same street. one of the victims was pregnant. kala rama is live in annandale

with the story. >> reporter: ken, two people were hit by cars on highland boulevard miles apart, and they both turned out to be deadly incidents. the first happened around 7:30 last night. 61-year-old steven toretsky stepped out into the path of a honda. he was hit and killed at the intersection of bay street and highland boulevard in staten island. the driver of the car is cooperating and no charges have been filed. just about three hours later and 25 miles away, a 31-year- old pregnant woman was hit and killed by a car in the annandale section of staten island on highland boulevard. shannon lies was a waitress at mike's place and known as a hard worker. she was walking to the bus but crossed in the middle of the block when she was hit.

she didn't survive. police say they are interviewing the driver of the car that hit shannon lies. no charges have been filed. we're live in the annandale section of staten island, kala . thank you. it's 4:34, new this morning, frightening video of a woman on back to back nights. recent incident. upper manhattan. she walked into the store with her gun drawn and walked out with cash. the night before the woman did the same thing at a bodega in kingsbridge getting away with $300. no one was hurt. new details this morning on an armed robbery inside the plaza hotel. police released these photos of the suspect late last night. police say he smashed about 4600 euros from an employee,

which is about $5000. three bronx men in custody facing a long list of felony charges after a shooting led to a wild car chase. this man opened fire on a rival with two plain clothes detectives as witnesses. he fired two shots at point- blank range but then he missed. security cameras caught the moment when that went horribly wrong. the getaway car smashing into an elderly man's black honda at 167th street. >> they ran up this block. other cops ran towards kelly to chase them down. >> they were swarming. >> the elderly victim went to the hospital with injuries to his neck. a second driver whose car was hit is also in the hospital. >> 4:35. police at a bronx hospital were trying to figure out why it took five days to find a missing boy who was discovered

dead in a bathroom. 44-year-old anthony aiuso hadn't been seen since thursday when he was treated for an injured finger. his body was found yesterday in a blocked public bathroom on the floor where he worked. his family wants answers. >> no one looked in this particular bathroom for five days, and then found him five days later pretty much because we only went there and made a commotion. >> his cause of death has not been determined. time now is 4:36. the body of a second person has been pulled from the ruins of that building explosion in borough park. it is believed to be the body of a 48-year-old woman, francisca figueroa the mother of 3. she had been evicted on thursday but friends and family confirm she was still there cleaning up when leaking gas exploded. >> that woman is a hard worker, all the years i've known her,

you know she was a hardworking woman. enjoyed life. >> national grid says the gas in the apartment had been turned off for nonpayment, so now investigators are going to look into whether any gas lines were tampered with or locks broken. 4:37, and tonight the a's play their first playoff game in three years, but the players thoughts will be with a teammate fighting a much different battle. pitcher c. c. sabathia will not be in the club as he enters alcohol rehab. manager joe girardi says sabathia came to him sunday said he needed help. in a statement sabathia said in part it hurts me deeply to do this now, but i owe it to myself and to my family and to get myself right. i want to take control of my disease, and i want to be a better man, father, and player. we'll have a live report from yankees stadium in the next

the flood waters are beginning to recede in hard hit south carolina. president obama has declared the state a major disaster area. that will free up federal funds for the recovery effort. hundreds of roads and bridges have been flooded or totally washed away. the national guard now rescuing people from their own homes. >> everything i own has been destroyed. >> there's a good chance if you go out and start looking you may become a victim. we have roads that are continuing to crumble down. >> man, some drenched areas got more than 2 feet of rain, a thousand people have been forced from their homes, some 40,000 have no drinking water. >> and then you think of all the ems workers and rescue workers. >> around the clock. >> when you just saw the shot of the man being put in a

yesterday's high was 67 in line with our forecast. normal high is 67. but we're going to see warmer than normal temperatures on the way, and the sun's officially up 3 minutes before 7:00. temperatures will trend above normal starting today. tomorrow's the warmest day with temperatures in the mid-70s. showers start to show up on friday. they'll clear out by the time we get to midday. hopatcong is at 43 and right around blaise town, 42. pike county about 42. bridgeport 49. 47 islip to 57 around montauk, always a warm spot there where the water temperatures are still about 67 degrees. a light wind this morning has been mostly out of the north and out of the northwest. this new high pressure ridge coming in is going to make for a great day with a lot of sunshine. clear skies are all the way back to the great lakes. the storm that brought the rain to south carolina, north carolina, sliding into the atlantic. joaquin's way out in the atlantic, and now high pressure

few days. when we get to friday, the jet stream is going to drop back down to the south. that's going to allow systems to come across like a cold front and give us some rain on friday. for now our futurecast has clear skies. our computer model, i pulled it out and let you see this cold front coming across the country for thursday night, and this starts to roll. what was that? this starts to roll into the area for friday. sunny and nice, high 73. tonight we've got clear and cool weather. 50s in the suburbs. 59 around the five boroughs and sunny and pleasant tomorrow. a high of 74. here we go. we've got 70-on thursday, and then on friday got rain. that comes in midday afternoon. rains into friday night and early in the morning saturday. by afternoon we've got sunshine saturday and 66 and sunny and 66 on sunday. >> all in all you were saying yesterday we were talking the reservoirs are pretty much back >> they're okay.

see the man in the black shirt, he's charged now with battery on a sports official. police say neil davis was either coaching or watching a game when he became upset with one of the calls. investigators say that he ran on to the field and punched the official in the face. davis claims he was trying to break up a fight. he's now free on bail. time now is 4:48. this morning we are learning about a possible motive in that massacre at a college in oregon. 26-year-old mass murderer christopher harper mercer ranted in a manifesto about not having a girlfriend. he thought everyone else was crazy and he was the sane one. he killed nine people before taking his own life. the white house confirms president obama will meet on friday in oregon. the owner of high bridge arms decided to close after legislators proposed a new law

that required the store to have video of every gun sale and every ammunition transaction to the police. the legislator said the explanation for the closing was in his words comical. an 11-year-old boy in tennessee had no trouble getting the gun police say he used to shoot and kill an 8- year-old neighbor. neighbors in white pines have been covering up the spot on the lawn where 8-year-old makayla dyer was shot to death. they say she was playing with her puppy, and when the 11-year- old asked to see one she said no and the boy killed her. >> my heart's aching because a little girl lost her life really young, but my heart's aching too because a little boy is having to go through what he's having to go through. >> the father of the accused killer visited his son in jail neighbors say the boy had bullied makayla in the past. this morning it is unclear

the controls of a passenger plane that was bound for boston. the american airlines flight made an emergency landing in syracuse after the co-pilot reported a medical emergency. a flight attendant who was a nurse tried to revive the unresponsive pilot. paramedics were waiting to help the pilot but it was too late. passengers were only told the pilot was sick. >> we thought that he just wasn't feeling well. we had no idea he had passed. it was extremely shocking. >> a pilot dying during a flight is very rare. the faa says it's only happened eight times in about 20 years. changes are coming to a high school history textbook after that book changed some very important history. publisher mcgraw-hill has apologized for its geography book that said the atlantic slave trade brought millions of workers to north america. the company was called out by a

series of posts on social media. about one quarter of the state's schools are using some version of the book. >> i'm wondering how they're being told outside of world geography. this is the first step in high school history. now what's the u.s. history book look like. >> mcgraw-hill says it will update the digital version of the text immediately and provide teachers a free supplemental plan about the atlantic slave trade. california now the fifth state to allow terminally ill patients to end their own lives. governor jerry brown yesterday signed the end of life option act. the right to die law allows patients to use doctor prescribed drugs to take their lives. brown signed the measure 11 months after the brittany manor. a judge hands down the

up to $3.5 million. officials also seized $300,000 in cash. and we're seeing video this morning of seven young men wanted for a vicious beating on board a bus in brooklyn. police say it attacked a 17- year-old boy on a b43 bus. the victim was punched and kicked. he suffered a broken jaw and a cut to his face. police are hoping someone will come forward and identify the suspects in the video. so far no arrests. closing in on 5:00. just ahead on eyewitness news this morning, we're following new leads this morning on the deaths of two pedestrians in two separate accidents on a busy boulevard in staten island. one of the victims was six months pregnant. >> new details on the search for the crew members who went missing aboard a cargo ship at the height of hurricane joaquin. and we've learned two of those crew members are from our area. >> and meteorologist bill evans

they're going to do it without pitcher c. c. sabathia. he has decided to check himself into rehab. and good morning, i'm lori stokes. >> and i'm ken rosato. it is tuesday october 6th. you're never more than 7 minutes away from weather and traffic. meteorologist bill evans kicks off the exclusive accuweather forecast. >> grab a jacket, we've got a light to calm wind around, and we're looking at temperatures now right at our normal overnight low which is 53 degrees in the city. clear skies and a calm wind, and down the jersey shore normal, 45 brick, 45 around wrightstown and 53 degrees to 49. you go from whitestone queens to the bronx. today we're looking at sunshine. by noontime we're around that 63 to 65-degree mark. this afternoon we're looking at 73 degrees. ooh is that going to be nice. that is 6 degrees warmer than normal for this time of the year.

two deadly pedestrian accidents on staten island. the first on highland boulevard on bay street in the rose bank section before 7:30 last night. hours later another person was hit and killed on island boulevard this time in the annandale section. the victim pregnant. eyewitness news reporter kala rama outside the diner where she worked. co-workers there devastated right? >> reporter: they are devastated here, especially considering so many of them witnessed this horrific accident and of course to have two deadly incidents on the same street just 20 minutes away from each other is a tough situation. the first incident happened around 7:30 last night where a 61-year-old man was killed. here in annandale, this tragic accident where we're told that waitress who works here at mike's place was crossing the road just in front of the diner here in highland boulevard when she was struck and killed here. she was 31 years old and six months pregnant with her third child.

shannon lies had been a waitress at mike's place for two years and was known as a hard worker. her manager said she left work around 11:00 still in her uniform, which is all black and restaurant here. he ran outside as did several side. he said the employees are having a tough time this morning, and they all know she was all about her kids. she lived for them. >> we all rushed out. she was still alive, unfortunately when the emergency had arrived she had passed on. >> were you able to talk to her? >> yes, i tried. i didn't get no response. she was unconscious. it was already too late. she got hit hard. >> reporter: obviously a very tough thing for those employees to see. as for the driver police say the driver who was a woman is cooperating with this

they say that she was able after hitting shannon lies was able to make it down the street about a quarter mile to the light. she turned around and realized she had hit someone and came back to the scene. so far no charges have been filed. live in the annandale section of staten island, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> 5:05. friends and family of those aboard a missing cargo ship that vanished in the middle of hurricane joaquin are holding out hope for a miracle. overnight we've learned that two of those crew members are from right here in our area. the coast guard concluded that the 790-foot el faro sank near the bahamas in 15,000 feet of water. the ship was carrying 33 people. one is a long island native. the vessel vanished on thursday after it was blown right into the path of hurricane joaquin. friends are hoping for the best. >> like to have them back and

we just want that happy ending. that's all. >> yesterday one body in a survival suit was recovered. the coast guard says it could not be identified. 5:05. federal investigators will be back on the scene of that amtrak train derailment in vermont this morning. the washington d. c. bound train derailed after hitting rocks sending two cars down a hill and injuring seven people. four of the injured were released from the hospital last night. 98 passengers and four crew officials say their rocks tumbled down from a ledge and into the train's path. it's believed that there were not more injuries because the train car stayed intact. that train was scheduled to stop at penn station before heading to washington. other news now, the yankees head into the playoffs tonight but the roster will not include pitcher c. c. sabathia. the starter will miss the post season after deciding to check himself into alcohol rehab into a center today. dray clark is live now at yankees stadium in the bronx.

good morning dray. >> reporter: certainly losing deal. we'll talk more about his departure in a moment. for yankees fans it probably feels like it's been forever since the yankees have been in the playoff. in reality it was only three seasoning a the. tonight the drought ends when they host the houston astros in the american league wild card game. the yankees qualified for the playoffs thursday night when they beat the boston red sox. tonight's winner moves on to a matchup against the defending american league champion kansas city royals in the division series which starts thursday night in missouri. what may be a bigger loss for the team is certainly the loss of c. c. sabathia. we heard that stunning news that came out yesterday that the starting pitcher revealed that he is entering an alcoholic rehabilitation center. the big left-hander is the only remaining pitcher on the roster from the yanks 2009 world championship team. this year was certainly an up

and down one as he came back from a knee injury. then yesterday afternoon he released a statement which read in part, i owe it to myself, and i owe it to my family to get myself right. his manager certainly is standing behind him. >> you think about where he is in his career, obviously the coverage that is going to take place, but i give him like i said a lot of courage. he's got a lot of courage to step up when he did because he knew that his family and his children were first. >> reporter: now as for his teammates a-rod sent out this big man. certainly c. c. sabathia considered one of the best players in all of baseball now considered probably one of the bravest players in all of

police say they suspect a long island dermatologist found unconscious in the doorway of a chelsea apartment building may have died of a drug overdose. 38-year-old kiersten cerveny night. her body was found later in a doorway of an apartment building in chelsea. investigators are awaiting the tests. for more clues about her death. authorities say that yesterday an initial examination was inconclusive. she is a mother of three small children. 5:13.

the united states attorney general loretta lynch has struck an historic deal with bp to cover state and federal claims from the gulf oil spill. the announcement of the $20 billion settlement will come this morning. it includes over 7 billion for restoration work along the gulf and almost $5 billion for economic damage from the 2010 explosion of the deepwater horizon oil rig. a 15-year restoration plan will be put in place to ensure that money is spent effectively. it is 5:14 and bill evans is joining us with the accuweather forecast. >> good morning lori and ken. we look from our camera in brooklyn to the lower east side. a beautiful morning, a gorgeous sunrise. that's a little time away from now. a little bit before 7:00 is our sunrise. about 6:30 as we get towards dawn, humidity is light to moderate. winds are calm, and the pressure 30.08 and steady. high pressure making for a great day.

yesterday's high was 67 which is normal for this time of year. the air quality is good, the uv index a 5. pollen count is low to moderate for ragweed. if you're a ragweed sufferer that will last through the end of the month. 40 around -- you get in here toward morris county, 45 around poughkeepsie. a little northerly to a northwest wind today makes it feel nice and fall-like. clear skies here from the northeast all the way back to the great lakes. we're looking at some beautiful weather today, our futurecast, this is our computer guidance. our computer model is showing clear skies today, tomorrow sun and clouds. it is a global model. here's a cold front coming for friday. that should start to increase clouds friday morning and rain will start mostly around midday afternoon. this front pushes through by the time we get to overnight

3 train uptown local only 42nd to 96th with that rail condition. alternate side parking rules are suspended. back over to you ken, lori. thank you. it's 5:31. new this morning, two families are heartbroken this morning after two people were killed while trying to cross a busy boulevard on staten island. first accident happened on highland boulevard at bay street in the rose section just before 7:30 last night. eyewitness news reporter kala rama is live at the location of the second accident in the annandale section. >> reporter: right, lori, this was a pregnant waitress who was leaving mike's diner here after a shift at around 11 p.m. she walked right out those front doors and went to cross the street in the middle of the block here when she was hit by a car after her shift. she was 31 years old and six months pregnant with her third child. shannon lies had been a waitress at mike's place for two years.

she was known as a hard worker. her manager said that she left work around 11:00 still in her uniform dressed in all black, crossed in front of the restaurant. he ran outside as did several of the other employees to be by her side once she was hit by that car. based on her injuries he knew she wouldn't make it. he says all the employees are having a tough time this morning. they all know she was all about her kids. >> she had two beautiful little daughters and she was expecting a boy. this happened. just terrible tragedy. >> reporter: police say that the driver didn't realize at something. the driver continued down, made it to the light a quarter mile away and turned around once she realized what had had happened. she stayed on the scene. she is cooperating, still being interviewed by police. been filed.

we're live here in the annandale section of staten island, kala rama channel 7 eyewitness news. thank you. and new this morning, frightening video of a woman wanted in two armed robberies a the city bodegas on back to back nights. here she is last tuesday night in upper manhattan. she walked into the store in fort george with her gun drawn. she walked out with an unknown amount of cash. the woman did the same thing at a bodega in kingsbridge the night before getting away with $300 and no one was hurt. new details in an armed robbery inside the plaza hotel. police are elessed these photos -- released these photos of the suspect overnight. the man held up the currency exchange inside the hotel. police say he smashed about 4600 euros from an employee, which is about $5000. no one was hurt. if you have information about either of these crimes you're asked to call police. 5:34. three bronx men are in custody

facing a long list of felony charges after a shooting led to a wild car chase. it's the top story on our free news app. this man opened fire with two plain clothes detectives as witnesses. he fired two shots but he missed. he fled and security cameras caught the moment that went wrong. the getaway car smashed into an elderly man's black honda at 157th street. >> they ran up this block. that's when the other cops that were armed ran towards kelly to chase him down. >> they were swarming, police cars were showing up left and right. >> the elderly victim went to the hospital with injuries to his neck. a second driver who's car was hit is also in the hospital. police and staff at a bronx hospital are trying to figure out why it took five days to find a missing employee who was discovered dead in a bathroom. 44-year-old anthony luso had

correct the body of a second person has been pulled from the rubble of that building that exexploded in borough park. it's believed to be the body of 48-year-old francisca figueroa. the mother of three shouldn't have been in the building on saturday. she was evicted on thursday, but friends and family members confirmed she was still there cleaning up when leaking gas exploded. >> the woman's a hard worker. all the years i've known her, she's had several businesses. she's always working making money for her kids. you know, she was just a hardworking woman that enjoyed life.
