right now at 6:00. police are investigating a pair of deadly crashes on staten island. this morning we've learned one of the victims is a pregnant woman who was just trying to cross the street. >> new information on that cargo ship missing for days in the wake of hurricane joaquin. two of the men on board have ties to our area. >> and the yankees are hoping to keep their post season hopes alive but they're going to have to do it without one of their veterans on the mound, and good morning, i'm lori stokes. >> and i'm ken rosato. it is tuesday october 6th. you're never more than 7 minutes away from weather and traffic. meteorologist bill evans with the exclusive accuweather forecast. >> let's take a look outside, shall we, on this tuesday morning. happy tuesday to you. we're looking at a temperature now at 6:00 of 52 degrees. that will tap out as our overnight low. north port at massapequa. the east hamptons 56.

accidents on staten island leaving two pedestrians dead. the first crash happened around 7:30 last night on highland boulevard. a man was struck and killed by a car. just a few hours later and a few miles away, a woman was struck and killed on the way home from work. a short time ago, we learned pregnant. eyewitness news reporter kala that story. >> reporter: ken, shannon lies is her name. she was a waitress here at diner there. she was finishing up her shift at 11:00 last night, walked right out those front doors and crossed the street right here in the middle of the block. this is where she was hit and all of her co-workers saw it happen, terrible, terrible thing. shannon lies was 31 years old and six months pregnant with her third child. lies had been a waitress at mike's place here for two years and is known as a hard worker. her manager says she left work around 11:00 still in her uniform, which is all black and

crossed in front of the restaurant here. moments later he saw the horrific incident. he ran outside as did several of her co-workers to be by her side. based on her injuries he knew she wouldn't make it. the employees are having a tough time this morning. they all knew her and knew her as a mom who really cared, who really lived for her children. >> that's all she talked about. that's all she talked about, her kids, her kids, her kids and she had pictures. i worked at mike's locations for the last two years, and this is new to me, but first thing we did, we shared, you know, portraits of our children. she was working very hard for them. she was expecting as i said a boy. >> reporter: at first people out here thought that the driver kept going, but police say what happened was the driver didn't know she hit someone because shannon was wearing all black and crossing the middle of the street. when she realized what happened she was about a quarter mile

away, turned around and came back and stayed at the scene. she is cooperating with this investigation. so far no charges have been filed. we're live in the annandale section of staten island, kala rama channel 7 eyewitness news. thank you. and friend and family of those on board a missing cargo ship that vanished in the middle of hurricane joaquin are holding out hope for a miracle. overnight we have learned that two crew members are from our area. the coast guard has concluded that the 790-foot el faro sank near the bahamas in about 15,000 feet of water. the ship was carrying 33 people. news day reports that one is a long island native and another attended the u.s. merchant marine academy in kings point. the vessel vanished on thursday after it was blown into the path of hurricane joaquin and friends are hoping for the best. >> like to have them back and

a happy ending. we just want that happy ending. >> yesterday one body in a survival suit was recovered. coast guard says it could not be identified. the doctor from long island found dead after a night of partying in the city. police sourcing tell eyewitness news it appears dr. kiersten cerveny died of a drug overdose and her death does not appear to be a criminal act. police say she went out with a friend on saturday night. her body found hours later in a doorway of an apartment building in chelsea. pending. flags are flying at half- staff once again today across the country in honor of the nine men and women killed in the oregon college massacre. that proclamation coming from president obama who will travel to roseburg oregon friday to meet privately with families. we're learning of a possible motive for the attack.

we're going to go to john del giorno high above. good morning john. >> good morning debbie. we've got first live pictures here of this problem at the verrazano bridge. right in front of that police car you can see the marks on the pavement. that seems to be a fluid spill from an accident that was just cleared. we're at the vz. this is the staten island bound verrazano bridge. for those doing the reverse commute from brooklyn into staten island, this will be a problem. the bridge, the upper level was entirely shut down for 10 or 15 minutes. they got the van on a tow truck. now they're awaiting a crew to come out here and clean that fluid spill up. take a look at this delay already. it's a long delay all the way across the bridge back on to the gowanus expressway. if you're heading from brooklyn into staten island this morning, no alternate available. it's the verrazano bridge, low some extra time. at the very least head for the lower level. >> let's tell you what's also happening as we head to our maps heading to the inbound

6:13, and it only took minutes for fire crews to put out a small electrical fire at the 3-mile island nuclear power plant in central pennsylvania. the flames broke out before 10:00 last night.

the plant was back to business within minutes. officials say at no time was there any danger of radiation being released. one person dead, 20 injured after an suv slams into a trolley bus in philadelphia. the crash happened last night. investigators say the trolley had stopped at a bus stop or stop sign i should say, not a bus stop when the suv rear- ended the bus, the suv driver died at the hospital, and the passenger was hospitalized. the people on the bus got some minor injuries. amtrak running with some changes in its service after a derailment sent train cars tumbling off the tracks. 98 passengers were on board the train from vermont to d. c. when it skipped the tracks after hitting fallen rocks. seven people including an amtrak worker suffered minor injuries. officials say it could have been much worse if not for the train cars which remained intact. the train was scheduled to stop at penn station on its way to washington. there's a major change on long island.

the suffolk county republican caucus is going to demand major reforms to the red light camera program. they took notice when one man started redirecting the cameras skyward in protest, and now legislators agree, they say that yellow light durations were shortened right after cameras went up. caucus members say this got you law enforcement is at its worst. time is 6:15. we check the accuweather forecast. >> and that means we step outside and check in with bill. >> it's cool, it's crisp, grab a jacket. you're going to need that. i call it suit weather. you need a coat this morning, sweater, something like that, and later on today it's going to feel absolutely great. we're at dawn, we're going to have a pretty sunrise. we're at 52 degrees. a couple wind, pressure at 30. yesterday's high was 67 right at normal. sunrise this morning right before 7, sunsets at 6:30. temperatures will be trending above normal starting today as we'll be into the 70s.

investors rallied a wall street confident that the federal reserve would decide to held off on raising key interest rates. dow jones starts today at 16776 up 300 points. nasdaq composite and s&p 500 began more than 1% higher as well. futures are down at this hour. overseas markets saw a boost as well. japan's nikkei gained 1%. hong kong hang seng slightly lower. general mills pulling thousands

taillights on the bridge have stacked up. that is due to what appears to be a one-car accident on the exit ramp to 92nd street. take a look at that traffic, bumper-to-bumper volume both ways on the upper level across the verrazano with accidents in each direction. we're live over the vz, john del giorno channel 7 eyewitness news. pop star demi lovato will put down the microphone for an important trip to capitol hill. the 23-year-old singer is meeting with members of congress it raise awareness of mental illness. yesterday she talked about her personal struggles at a conference on mental health in washington thanking her friends and family for her recovery. she's also kicking off a new social media campaign on periscope it's called be vocal. 6:25. this friday would have been john lennon's 75th birthday. and yoko ono plans a special commemoration today. ono hopes 6 to 10,000 people will join her in creating the world's largest human peace sign.

a gun drawn and walked out with cash. the night before she did the same thing at a bodega in the kingsbridge section of the boston getting away with $300. new details in an armed robbery inside the plaza hotel. police releasing these pictures of the suspect a few hours ago. police say he stashed about 4600 euros from an employee. that's worth 5,000 us dollars. new information on three men arrested after a shooting ask a wild car chase in the bronx. all three face a long list of felony charges. police say it started with kevin otero firing two shots point-blank at a rival and then missing. then they say he got behind the wheel for the get away and ended up crashing into a black honda. the driver of that car is now in the hospital with neck injuries. a second man was also hurt during the chase. opening statements begin

believe it or not, this is the las vegas strip, sin city. looks more like a river after flood waters rushed through leaving nearly 2,000 customers without power. now thunder and lightning and hail was also reported in the area, much expected for the remainder of the week. new this morning news of yet another death of a high school football player after an on field injury. this time it happened in washington state. kenny buoy died yesterday. the 17-year-old suffered a traumatic brain injury during a game friday in seattle. this tragedy of course comes

just a little more than a week after warren hill's quarterback evan murray died after suffering a lacerated spleen while being tackled during a game last month. time is 6:42. the body of a second person has been pulled from the ruins of that building that exploded in borough park. itst believed to be the body of 48-year-old francisca figueroa. the mother of 3 should not have been in the building on saturday. she'd been evicted thursday. national grid said gas to her apartment had been turned off due to nonpayment. investigators are trying to figure out whether any gas lines had been tampered with or locks broken. six people are facing charges in connection with a massive drug bust in queens. authorities seized 3,000 pounds of marijuana along with nearly a quarter million dollars in cash. cops say they spotted the suspect with cardboard moving -- the pot had an estimated street value of 3 1/2 million dollars. good morning america is coming up next. robin roberts is live in time square. good morning robin.

public bathroom on the floor where he looked. >> no one looked in this particular bathroom for five days and found him five days later, pretty much only because we went there and made a commotion. determined. the owner of an exotic pet store is in critical condition after being crushed by a giant python. >> please, the snake's on his neck ma'am, please. oh, my god, please. >> okay. so the snake is squeezing. >> yes, it's wrapped around his neck. his whole face. his face is covered. it's a 20-foot snake >> the terrifying 9-1-1 call that came in to police in new port kentucky right outside of cincinnati. police found the 20-foot python wrapped around terry wilkin's head and neck. he was not breathing when officers pulled the python off wilson was taken to the hospital where he's recovering.

new this morning, a kitten trapped in a storm drain rescued by police in middle village queens overnight. a tweet from a pedestrian heard a cat who was meowing on penelope avenue. after the lucky rescue, the kitten was take ton a vet in forest hills for observation. the cat appears to be 6 or 7 weeks old. we're just getting word in of a big slowdown on the van wyck expressway in queens. john? >> it has been a busy morning already, and we just spied this on our normal traffic patrol here through queens. we've got a problem now on the northbound van wyck expressway ramp. this is maybe one of the busiest ramps in the city. you see that police car parked sideways. we're thinking maybe this is construction in the process of being cleaned up. that ramp, all traffic heading towards laguardia and citi

6:54 and tragedy struck twice on the same staten island street overnight. >> eyewitness news reporter kala rama is live in annandale with the story. >> reporter: yes, a mike's place waitress here was killed after her shift.

doors right here right outside mike's place and crossing the street to make it to the bus after wrapping up her shift. she was hit in the middle of the block. shannon lies was 31 years old, six months pregnant with her third child. lies had been a waitress at mike's place for about two years. she's known by her co-workers as a hard worker, someone who lives for her children. her manager told me she was wrapping up her shift around 11:00, still in her uniform, and crossed in front of the restaurant. moments later they heard the horrific incident and ran outside. her co-workers stood with her. they knew based on her injuries that she was not going to make it. she was rushed to the hospital where she died. as for the driver, the driver didn't realize that she had hit something until about a quarter mile down the road. she then turned around and stopped, talked with police. police say she is cooperating here. so far no charges have been filed. we're live in the annandale section of staten island, kala

rama channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. we've also learned two crew members aboard a missing cargo ship that vanished in the middle of hurricane joaquin have ties to our area. the coast forward has concluded that the 790-foot el faro sank near the bahamas in about 15,000 feet of water. the ship was carrying 33 people. one is a long island native and another attended u.s. merchant marine academy in kings point. for the first time in three seasons, there's a playoff game at the big ballpark in the bronx. the yankees are hosting the houston astros in the american league wild card game. the winner moves on. the loser goes home. game time 8:00. >> and get another check on that bumper-to-bumper backup opt van wyck expressway. >> straight to john del giorno. >> ken and lori we found out what the problem was, it was an unauthorized tractor-trailer on that ramp from the van wyck to the grand central parkway.
