"good morning america" coming up. . this is new york's number 1 news, channel 7 eyewitness news with lori stokes and ken rosato, heather o'rourke with traffic, and bill evans with the exclusive accuweather forecast. now eyewitness news this morning. developing at 4:30, a wild scene in brooklyn after a man was shot to death inside his vehicle. this morning police are investigating the chain of events that landed his crashed suv in front of this hospital. >> also developing, a deadly apartment fire on staten island. one person was killed and several others were hurt, what investigators believe may have
been the cause. >> major league baseball suspends the dodgers chase utley for that vicious slide that broke ruben tejada's leg. >> i'm lori stokes. >> and i'm shirleen allicot in for ken rosato. today is monday, october 12th, and you're never more than 7 minutes away from weather and traffic. meteorologist bill evans here now with the exclusive accuweather forecast. >> good morning ladies, happy monday to you, happy columbus day to you. it's going to be a really nice day. temperatures are going to average about 10 degrees warmer than normal. we're starting out around 58 degrees which is a tad warmer than normal for this time of the day. temperatures about 54 at north port and massapequa, 52 a hauppauge, 48 belmar, a cool and crisp morning. it is going to be sunny and gorgeous on this columbus day. 72 to 75 later on this afternoon. i heard a rumor that heather o'rourke is back. heather o'rourke is back today.
and we are dealing with pretty good news as far as mass transit is concerned. i can tell you that metro north is doing some kind of track work going on the new haven line. you're going to experience changes there, long island railroad doing okay. new jersey transit is on or close. minor delays george washington bridge. lincoln tunnel you have one tube closed down, and the holland tunnel has a minor delay. as you go into fair view new jersey, broad street closed between fair view avenue and 91st street. a downed pole, downed wires. as you head to the new jersey turnpike northbound exit 10 accident in the truck lanes. they are doing repairs there. two lanes are closed down. street cleaning rules are suspended. the metered rules are in effect. we begin with breaking news. three people are shot after someone opened fire outside a club in manhattan. it happened within the last half hour on east 21st street in the flat iron district. the victims who were all women
were taken to nearby hospitals. right now police are searching for the driver of a black bmw seen driving away after the shooting. we have a crew headed to the scene, and we'll bring you the very latest as soon as we learn more. 4:32, developing right now, police are investigating after a man was shot and killed inside his car in brooklyn. the 31-year-old was found dead in his car after crashing near brooklyn hospital in fort green. this happened just before 11:00 last night at fulton street and ashland place. video shows the car's windows blown out by gunshots. it appeared the driver was going the wrong way when he crashed near the hospital. >> he's just not going to give up. he don't bother nobody. when i got the news, i thought they were playing with me. >> police have not identified the victim right now. no arrests have been made. and now on to a developing story on staten island.
one person is dead. four other people hurt after an apartment fire in mariner's harbor. this broke out just before midnight on the second floor of a building, and police have just identified the victim as 37-year-old caleb wouder of delaware. investigators say that fire may have been caused by candles. the road to the world series leads the mets back home for the first playoff game ever today in citi field. major league baseball has handed down its decision to suspend chase utley after that hard hitting takeout slide in game 2 that left ruben tejada with a broken leg, but utley is fighting back. kala rama is live at citi field with that story. >> reporter: shirleen, lori, the buzz surrounding tonight's game is expected to be huge.
field's first post season game in its seven-year history and after what happened in l. a. it should be off the charts here. the dodgers chase utley became public enemy number one when he slammed into shortstop ruben tejada as he slid into 2nd base during the 7th inning after game 2. the hit broke tejada's right leg and led to a two-game suspension for utley. that means he would miss tonight and tomorrow night's game. utley is considering the suspension considering the umpire called it a legal play but major league baseball is expected to make a ruling in time for tonight's game. mets manager terry collins says that doesn't matter. >> we all know how hard chase plays and everything else. it was late. it was a late slide. where he hit ruben on the field certainly was something that
>> the mets released a statement and not surprisingly they support utley's suspension calling it the appropriate course of action. dodgers manager don mattingly says utley reached out to tejada to try to apologize. we're live just outside citi field, kala rama channel 7 eyewitness news. thank you. new jersey police are investigating a hit and run after a woman was found badly hurt on the side of the road. >> as she fights for her life in the hospital, her family is demanding answers. 22-year-old anna semioli was found in critical condition around route 46 in clifton thursday night. her family says the last they heard from her was earlier on thursday when she called to say she was visiting friends at her school montclair university. none of her friends saw her that night. >> that strikes me as something is wrong.
my baby sister is in such critical condition, please come forward. >> friends say the police received nearly a dozen calls from drivers who saw the 22- year-old on the side of the road, but no one saw her get hurt. if anyone has any information about this case, you can call the clifton police dispatch center. now on to the latest in a string of arrests of correction officers at rikers island. police say this razor edge tool was found in a correction officers backpack as he arrived for his shift on saturday. investigators say it is the seventh arrest of a correction employee in the past five weeks, and more arrests are expected. some are accused of contributing to violence among inmates. 4:37. thousands of mourners marched in remembrance of the 95 people killed in saturday's bombings at a peace rally in turkey. mourners accused turkey's president of encouraging violence. investigators are working to
identify who sent the suicide bombers. the government says kurdish rebels of islamic state militants were likely responsible. a travel mess the airports nationwide. southwest airlines is blaming technical issues for hundreds of delays and long lines. the problem is causing headaches at airports from los angeles to nashville. southwest says it's been forced to go old school processing customers manually. that means handwritten tickets. many customers say the wait has been so long they've missed their flights. southwest is asking travelers to arrive at the airport at least two hours before their scheduled departures. gay, lesbian, and transgender members are speaking out in a ground breaking new video they hope will save lives. >> definitely gets better. >> it will absolutely get better. >> i promise you it gets better. >> the video titled it gets better is meant to show support

manhattan nightclub. darla miles has just arrived to the scene and she has the very latest. darla. >> good morning shirleen, this shooting happened within the last hour right around 4:00 this morning, so you can really see the massive response here from the nypd. we had emergency services here. you can see officers here on east 21st street walking up and down the street looking for possible evidence. at this point we do know that there were three women shot. this is near east 21st and 5th avenue. the circumstances surrounding the shooting at this point unclear, but there are lots of police officers between 5th avenue and madison in terms of collecting evidence and trying to determine exactly what happened. we do know at this point that the victims may have been taken to bellevue police are here on the scene trying to determine what may have happened. again, three women shot this morning around 4:00 this morning as they left a manhattan nightclub. we'll have more on this story coming up within the next half hour.

we're going -- sun's up just after 7:00. hackettstown 52. 44 milford in pike county pennsylvania. 44 islip. cool numbers, but yet at the same time they're warmer than normal for this hour of the day for this time of the year. winds as you see kind of coming out of the southwest here. nicely. you see we've got clear skies all the way to down south and back to the northwest. this front comes to us tomorrow, races very fast. this low that's out here in the atlantic comes up the coast. the two kind of come together to us, but that's not until tomorrow. we've got a great day today. a perfect parade day, high pressure right over us, winds out of the southwest. high about 75. here comes the low up the coast that could throw a shower in here tonight. that would be late. we've got great baseball weather, and we're looking at a few showers tomorrow. once the front goes through it will be cooler. temperatures get cooler on

tennessee has been shot to death. 31-year-old terrance ulridge died hours after being shot in his car after he was about to head work. he was killed while trying to break up a domestic dispute between his neighbors. one person is in custody. ulridge joined the memphis force a year ago. he leaves behind a fiancee who is four months pregnant. the ntsb and the faa are at the scene of a deadly weekend plane crash in california. the single engine aircraft went down next to a house near the nevada border. both people in the plane were killed. no one on the ground was hurt, but fire caused heavy damage to the home. a woman who lives nearby was still in shock hours after the crash. >> oh, my god, you know. 200 more yards this way, it would have been us. the plane had just taken off from lake tahoe airport. it's not clear where it was headed. there are plans underway to honor dr. martin luther king
junior, a freedom bell will be placed atop stone mountain in suburban atlanta. the nearly 1700-foot tall mountain was immortalized in dr. king's i have a dream speech delivered during the 1963 march on washington. the push for an honor for dr. king in georgia was started by an atlanta newspaper columnist. >> i wrote a column in july that suggested maybe we take that line from king's speech and carve it up at the top of the mountain. >> the initial idea was to carve the line "let ring" from stone mountain of georgia into the mountain. the bell was eventually approved by georgia's governor. the goal is to have it in place by next summer. >> wow. hundreds of people in mississippi are joining in the cause to change the state flag and take the confederate flag symbol off of it. demonstrators where are there in support of an initiative to the state constitution to change the flag.
capitol where a rally was held featuring merrily evans williams. taking the confederate emblem off the flag is not about changing history. >> it's not about letting go of your southern history. it's not about that. it's about having a flag so people can look at it and all feel proud of and not feel any sense of fear or shame. >> supporters of the flag were also there saying they came with their state flags to counter the negative attacks. the group supporting the amendment says it needs 100,000 signatures to place the initiative on an upcoming ballot. it's 4:51. a texas restaurant owner is doing its part to make sure people who are in need are being fed. chris stock dale owns a hot dog restaurant in austin. he was an executive at an oil company cooking up gourmet meals. that's when he noticed the large number of homeless people living in a shelter near his home and it made him think and rethink his career path. >> it struck me, i'm looking

thank you. breaking news in manhattan, just the last hour, and three women were shot outside a club. that shooter is still on the run right now. eyewitness news reporter darla miles is live now on the scene with the flat iron district. darla. >> good morning again lori. the nypd is looking for a black bmw in connection with this shooting. i want to point your attention to the nightclub. that's where you see a number of officers standing outside the door. this entire block of east 21st street between broadway and 5th avenue completely full of detectives trying to piece together the scene. we want to show you video of the moments just after the shooting here on east 21st street. it happened around 4:00 this morning. we do know that three women were shot. now at this point we are still waiting to find out if these women were friends or if this was a random shooting, and these women were just struck randomly. these three women were taken to bellevue. this happened around 4:00 this morning outside of a nightclub
we do know that the black bmw fled on east 20th street. that is the last place that vehicle was spotted. at this point, again, lots of detectives on the scene. we also have high ranking brass from the nypd here. we're hoping to get an update in the next 30 minutes. at this point three women were shot and they were taken to bellevue. the shooter is still at large. reporting live, darla miles channel 7 eyewitness news. police are on the scene after a shooting victim crashed his car near brooklyn hospital. 31-year-old man died at the scene. that shooting happened just before 11:00 last night near fulton and ashland place. investigators say the victim crashed his car at ashland apparently driving the wrong direction a block away from the hospital. the family says the victim is a hip-hop producer and a of three. no arrests have been made. 5:04. police are trying to solve a
a woman's body is found in a popular park. the victim was discovered inside kessina park yesterday afternoon. she was near colden street. the news has people in the area very nervous. >> i've been here for many, many years, at least 30 years, and i've seen the place change, and now it's considered safer, but i don't know. >> the victim has not been identified. a connecticut woman is now charged in an attempted abduction caught on camera tawanna randall was arrested saturday night and charged with sexual assault and unlawful restraint. police say she picked up the 17- year-old girl who was walking to school last monday in bridgeport. the teenager jumped out of the moving car once police say the suspect began attacking her. residents who saw the video of the escape are glad the suspect was caught. >> that's very nerve wracking.
you don't know. you walked around and you have kids. then you send them to school or you send them to the store, you expect them to go and come back. >> police say the whole thing started when ms. randall offered a ride to the teenager before turning violent. she will be in court tomorrow. new this morning, a suspected burglar on long island was feeling remorseful after he got caught. 34-year-old shane lopez was arrested saturday after police say he broke into a home in hicksville. the homeowner says she heard the window break and then heard a man say i'm sorry. police tracked a trail of blood from the broken window to a nearby parking lot where they found lopez wearing all black with several cuts to his head, arms, and hands. 5:06. the appeals process is underway after l. a. dodgers 2nd baseman chase utley was suspended for the slide that broke the leg of mets shortstop kala rama is live at citi field
this morning. she is in queens. hi kala. >> reporter: hi shirleen, it wouldn't be a battle between new york and l. a. if there wasn't some drama right? now there certainly is, and the mets and the dodgers are tied one game apiece. now on to that controversy. it's all about l. a.'s chase utley. utley's slide in the inning after game 2 not only knocked out mets shortstop, it knocked out tejada for the season. yesterday major league baseball handed utley a two-game suspension. he's appealing the ban today and is expected to receive a ruling before tonight's game. matt harvey starts tonight for the mets. he and utley have some history. in april harvey hit him in the back with a pitch after one of
the phillys pitchers hit two of the mets players. now we're left to wonder what might happen if utley has the chance to step on the plate tonight. harvey says nothing. >> there's certain situations that go through a game, and, you know, i think that's a completely different situation that occurred, and you know, that was all resolved. >> reporter: game 3 starts tonight at 8:30. you can expect more drama over the next two days. we'll be here for it all. we're live at citi field, kala rama channel 7 eyewitness news. speaking of drama, the giants fans also had a little bit of eli manning completed a career high, 41 passes against san francisco last night. the last one went for the game winning td against the 49ers. with just 21 seconds left in the 4th quarter, the giants pull out a 30-27 win that lifts them into first place in the nfc east.

leveled against bill cosby go against the school's mission and values and it is rescinding his honorary degree. several other schools have already rescinded honorary degrees given to the comedian. baylor's board of regents voted to rescind the ph.d. awarded to cosby in 2003. 50 women have spoken out over the course of several months with accusations of sexual assault and rape. it's 5:14, and actor randy quaid will be in court today after being arrested while trying to cross the border from canada into the u.s. quaid is his wife are being held in vermont on warrants from california. the two filed for refugee status in canada five years ago after being arrested for living in a guest home on a property they used to own. quaid was arrested friday night crossing into vermont. he was supposed to be extradited from canada to california later this week. >> he's almost unrecognizable.

a bit of a scare for dozens of passengers forced to evacuate on to the tarmac in los angeles when their plane's engine burst into flames. this happened yesterday afternoon at mccarron international airport. the allegiant air flight was headed to fresno when the crew reported a mechanical issue. when the plane stopped one of the engines caught fire. passengers and crew were evacuated safely. officials are now looking into the cause of the problem. >> very scary. 5:21. you are never more than 7 minutes away from weather and traffic beginning with bill evans and the accuweather

now new york's number 1 news, channel 7 eyewitness news this morning. breaking now at 5:30, three women shot outside a manhattan nightclub. the search is on for the gunman, and we are live with details on the car police are looking for right now. and good morning, i'm shirleen allicot. >> and i'm lori stokes. ken rosato is off today, and today is monday, october 12th. and let's get right now to that breaking news out of manhattan where three women have been shot outside a club. this happened on east 21st street, the flat iron district a little more darla miles is live on the scene with an update on the search for the gunman. >> darla. >> that's right, lori. we're outside of the motivo nightclub on east 21st street. i want to point your attention to all the detectives standing outside the nightclub.
around 4:00 this morning, and i want to point your attention also to video that took -- that we took just right after the shooting. there were three women who were shot in what appears to be a drive-by shooting at this point. this was a big party last night here at the motivo nightclub. it was an all black party, apparently this black bmw drove past this nightclub here on east 21st street and opened fire. now it is unclear if all three of the victims knew each other, if they were targeted or if they were randomly struck. in fact, there was one victim who was taken in an ambulance in flip-flops. this victim may not have been at the nightclub but may have just been walking down east 21st between 5th avenue and broadway at the time of the shooting. now we do know that all three women were taken to bellevue hospital. their conditions at this point

are in effect. lori over to you. thank you. now on to a developing story on staten island. police have identified the person killed in an apartment fire on staten island. 37-year-old caleb wilder of delaware died and four other people were hurt in the fire at mariner's harbor. broke out just before midnight on the second floor of a building. the four people who were hurt, they're expected to be okay. investigators say the fire may have been caused by candles. 5:34, it was the play that made thousands of people just cringe, and this morning l. a. dodgers 2nd baseman chase utley is suspended. >> that's right. but he is appealing that suspension. if he wins, he could be on the field tonight. mets shortstop ruben tejada isn't as fortunate. utley's slide on saturday left tejada with a broken leg. eyewitness news reporter kala rama is live now at citi field in queens. kala. >> reporter: the buzz
surrounding tonight's game here between the mets and dodgers is going to be huge, not only because this is citi field's first post season game in its seven-year history but after what happened in l. a. what everyone saw it's going to be off the charts. all the controversy is surrounding here chase utley. he became public enemy number 1 for mets fans when he slammed into shortstop ruben tejada as he slid into the 2nd base during the 7th inning of game 2 saturday night. the hit broke tejada's right leg and led to a two-game suspension for utley. that means he would miss tonight's and tomorrow night's game. utley is appealing the suspension considering the umpire called it a legal play, but then major league baseball is expected to make a ruling in time for tonight's game. utley says he had no intent to hurt tejada. mets manager terry collins says that doesn't matter. >> we all know how hard chase plays and everything else.

the hop, her family is demanding answers. 22-year-old anna semioli was found in critical condition along route 46 in clifton late thursday night. her family says the last they heard from her was earlier on thursday when she called to say she was visiting friends at her school at montclair state university. none of her friends say they saw her that night. >> that strikes me as something is wrong. my baby sister is in such critical condition. please come forward. >> friends say the police received nearly a dozen calls from driver who is saw the 22- year-old on the side of the road but no one saw her get hurt. if anyone has information about this case, you can call the clifton police dispatch center. 5:37. a rikers island corrections officer is facing charges this morning. investigators say he entered the jail carrying a razor-edge tool. commissioner mark peters of the city's department of investigations says the 47-year-

it is 5:42. south carolina residents are finally starting to see the water recede after several days of historic flooding. several areas were hit with even more rain over the weekend. more than a week after storms left many communities under water, officials are monitoring dozens of rivers after dams failed last week. residents say they're starting to see some real relief. >> it's finally reached its peak point. the river's finally crested, and it's slowly starting to make its way back down, but now all this water that's gotten to us. >> some parts of the carolinas are still under 6 feet of water. officials are working now to repair roads and bridges badly damaged in those storms. about 1 million people are expected to celebrate italian american culture and heritage, and the 71st annual columbus day parade.

iron district at about 4:00 this morning. the other republicans are now in the -- victims are now in the hospital. we'll have details on the car police are searching for. that's ahead in a live report coming up at 6 a.m. new this morning buildings inspectors are on the scene after an out of control taxi driver slammed into scaffolding on 5th avenue. it happened just before 2:00 this morning midtown. the driver was not hurt. the buildings department will take a look at the scaffolding and see if it suffered any serious damage. the cause of the crash is under investigation. also the fighting continues between cleveland law enforcement agencies over the police shooting of a 12-year- old black young man. tamir rice was shot and killed by white officer responding to a report of a man pointing a gun. expert reports found the shooting was justified. local prosecutors said the police union is not cooperating with his investigation. the union is accusing the
fact that officers don't have to provide statements in criminal probes. 5:51. an indiana woman took on a home intruder by going old school, really old school. check this out. the suspect did not know who he was messing with when he broke into karen dolly's home last friday. he told police he was just looking for a place to hide, but the woman whose home he chose is trained in medieval combat and has the hardware to back it up, like the large japanese combat sword she pulled out to keep the intruder at bay. >> i'm just calling 9-1-1 with the other hand. if i feel threatened coming awake i'm going to attack. >> and she did. >> police say the man who broke in was high on some unknown substance and he apologized several times. dolly says if he wasn't so apologetic she may have had to do more work with that sword of hers.
