week, everyone. this is new york's number 1 news, channel 7 eyewitness news with lori stokes and ken rosato, heather o'rourke with traffic and bill evans with the exclusive accuweather forecast. now eyewitness news this morning. breaking at 4:30, you're looking at a live picture of a huge fire raging in westchester county tearing through a row of stores and an apartment building in mount vernon. eyewitness news is on the scene. >> the mets are two wins away from the world series. we have new reaction from the players this morning. >> let's get a live look outside. bundle up before you head out as temperatures tumbled overnight. we are tracking a big warmup.

, good morning i'm lori stokes. >> thank you for joining us. i'm ken rosato. it is monday october 19th. you are never more than 7 traffic. meteorologist bill evans with forecast. >> good morning ken, have you back. that's over. it's chilly and it's cold outside the city. white plains 28, freezing at teterboro at 32. up to poughkeepsie and kingston, sussex, newburgh all in the 20s. 30 at belmar, 31 bridgeport and you know what that means, frost on the ground. we've got a freeze warning until 10:00 this morning. going to be a cold morning. dress warmly. you've got this wind out of the northwest making it chilly as well. we're going to talk about a big warmup in your accuweather seven-day forecast. heather's looking at your commute. >> my weekend was great.

let's go over our mass transit chart. no problems here metro north, new haven line ongoing track work. you have the 4 and 6 trains running express only getting into the brooklyn bridge until 5 a.m. this is the fdr drive right in the 70s. looks like traffic is doing just fine as you take the fdr drive and street cleaning rules are in effect. lori over to you. thank you. breaking right now in westchester county, firefighters are battling a huge fire ripping through several buildings in mount vernon. new video just in shows the fierce flames and thick smoke forcing families out into the cold. eyewitness news reporter kristin thorne is live with what we know so far. >> reporter: good morning lori, yeah, this fire started around 1:00 in the morning. now three hours later firefighters are still trying to get it under control. take a look here.

the electric is still on to some of these buildings. you can see some of that flashing going on there and the cleaners, that laundromat over there. as we've been here we've seen the flames literally go up and down this group of stores. it seems to be spreading back and forth. if you look behind that smoke there, that is where we believe that that apartment building was. we are hearing that that building may have collapsed. thankfully there have been no reports of any injuries. the fire started around 1:00 in the morning. those stores include a deli, a laundromat, also a pizza place. the fire spread to an attached three-story apartment building leaving about a dozen people now homeless. i heard from someone here on scene that it appears that perhaps a local police officer may have initially seen the flames and ran into that residential building to get everyone out. of course at 1:00 in the morning many of those people would have been sleeping. i want to show you back here live the 3-alarm fire again.

the electric going off in that cleaners right there, so this is a 3-alarm fire. i do see a yonkers department here as well, so we're hoping to get an update soon from the fire officials here on scene. obviously they're very busy with what they're handling. no injury. we're live in mount vernon. i'm kristin thorne channel 7 eyewitness news. >> it is 4:34. the midwest better make way for the magnificent mets. they are two wins away from the world series after another dominating performance against the chicago cubs. next stop chicago. the team tweeted out this picture overnight and the team boarding the plane down for the windy city. rob powers has the while lights. >> another powerful performance from syndergaard,ed mets head to chicago up two games to none. this team is really something. this team is two wins away from the world series.

>> and the mets sure are playing well. david wright gets in on the fun with a run scoring double in the 1st inning. daniel murphy's next. a two-run home run. in his last four games murphy's homered off arrieta, lester, frankie and kershaw twice. they had three -- curtis granderson with stellar defense in the 2nd. instead of giving up a home run, noah syndergaard gets a 1- 2-3 inning. syndergaard 1 run, 9 strikeouts, the mets have an impressive 4-1 victory. this team focused on the task at hand, winning. >> everybody wants to win. everybody's playing to win, and rooting for each other. they don't care who's in the game. just get it done. >> you dream of it, to be able to go to work with 24 men in there that are absolutely awesome guys and i think we're

weekend. community leaders stood beside friends and family yesterday just hours after dejah joyner died. the 12-year-old was shot friday nigh while standing in her living room. >> something needs to be done about this stuff you know. it's happening too much, too often. >> she was just a sweetheart. i couldn't be more proud of her if she was my own granddaughter. >> police are looking at surveillance video that shows someone getting out of a car and firing a shot missing the intended target. police are offering a $75,000 reward in the search for the shooter. police on long island have arrested a man next a burning body found in the otis pike thursday. investigators identified the guzman of amityville. yesterday they announced the

arrest of 21-year-old brian rosales meija. prosecutors charged him with second degree murder. 4:37 the haitian community in rocklin county in an uproar over a help wanted ad that specified no haitians. ed ad set off a firestorm of protest online, and it prompted action by local state senator david car lucic. form of discrimination. >> the senator's calling on the attorney general to take action against penny saver and the advertiser interim health care incorporated. we've reached out to that company and to penny them. it is 4:38. a woman used her teeth to fight off an attempted sexual attacker at a popular manhattan park. a man confronted a 63-year-old woman in the restroom in union square yesterday afternoon. the woman told police he demanded she perform a sex act,

but she managed to bite his hand during a struggle and ran away. investigators say the suspect may be homeless in his 30s with a long beard and green jacket. 4:38 and happening today the government will announce new regulations for remote controlled drones. the new rules will require owners to register those devices with the department of transportation. the claim follows an increasing number of close calls between drones and airplanes. the policy is expected to be in place just in time for the holidays. it is 4:39. you're never more than 7 minutes away from weather and traffic and bill. >> clear skies and a look from our camera here at 4 times square looking south, looking good at 37 degrees in manhattan, a little above freezing in the suburbs. it's freezing and it's frosty. as we look from our camera here in astoria looking south, clear skies, great visibility, but it's a chilly 37 degrees. you see the wind

it we continue to follow breaking news in westchester county where a fire is tearing through homes and businesses. this is in mount vernon. eyewitness news is live with continuing coverage. kristin thorne will have an update in a bit. it's 4:44. an early blast of winter in parts of new york it hurts to say in syracuse police had to close get this a 12-mile section of i-81 yesterday of car accidents. communities north of there got up to 9 inches of snow. in northern michigan they got a half a foot of snow and marathon runners in grand rapids still did their personal best in spite of temperatures

[ laughter ] >> i don't even want to know. meteorologist bill evans with the accuweather forecast. >> i wouldn't know but i'm just saying that hog was looking around like. >> right is this. >> that's how they roll in michigan. >> here's what's happening this morning, we have a chilly morning outside with winds that continue to be out of the northwest. clear skies. a cold start to your day. here's our look from brooklyn over to the east side. quiet on the east river. dry humidity. temperatures 37. look at that pressure, 30.45. that is strong, cold high pressure out of canada right over us, and so yesterday's high 50 degrees. normal is 63. we're 13 degrees cooler yesterday. we'll still be a little cooler

about 10, 11 degrees cooler. sun's officially up at 7:11. here are the cold hard facts, the suburban temperatures have tumbled into the 20s this morning, a hard freeze. low and mid-30s for new york city, the coast, widespread frost north and west and it's still chilly through the day today. a big warmup is on the way. kingston, poughkeepsie 24, 23 carmel, say good-bye to the growing season. look at monticello now down into the teens at 19. 31 coastal connecticut. 32 islip. there is this freeze warning in effect until 10:00, not counting really the five boroughs of new york city or right at the jersey shore or parts of the urban areas of new jersey. got to get it north and west and away from the city. that's still 10:00. you see the wind profiles with clear skies out of the northwest. as i was talking about, here's the wind coming up out of the south.

that will warm us up as we go into tomorrow. we're looking at 52 today, big warmup tomorrow. we're looking at i would 68. it's noticeably warmer. this cool front hangs back here until we get to the end of the week. sunny, still cool, high 52. 47 tonight, 40 in the suburbs. there's your big warmup, and tomorrow we rebound nicely, plenty of sunshine, much warmer, the high is 68. and we're going to be looking at temperatures that warm up nicely this week. we're going to be looking at low 70s by midweek and the end of the week. >> i've got to ask bill something. already i'm back with a question. coming out of the home depot yesterday in new jersey, 40 something degrees sunny. >> why does he have to sound like james cagney coming out of the home depot. >> i was in the garden state so i'm talking like my garden staters. all of a sudden i see these flakes of snow.

in arizona this morning. a family of 5 drowned when their suv plunged into a lake. it's still unclear just how it happened. police and some good samaritans pulled the parents from the vehicle along with two of their children. they all died. rescuers did realize there was another child in the car until a few hours later when divers pulled him out. all three children were toddlers between 1 and 3 years old. police in detroit say a pastor shot and killed a man church. according to investigators the man threatened the pastor with a brick just after services started yesterday afternoon. and that's when the pastor's and opening fire. the man died at the hospital. police say the two did have a prior dispute. a father in chicago is facing charges after police say his 6-year-old son found his brother. 3-year-old ian santiago died

after being shot while playing with a game of cops of robbers with his older brother. police say the 6-year-old found his father's loaded gun on top of the refrigerator. the two boys were home with their grandfather when the shot rang out. >> i heard a pop and i came through the door and the 6-year- old he told me ian's been shot so i ran down there and i grabbed him. he was laying flat. >> the boy's father 25-year-old michael santiago is facing felony child endangerment charges. prosecutors say santiago had bought the gun on the street and showed it to his sons when he brought it home. gold medalist oscar pistorius found guilty of killing his girlfriend reeva steencamp will be released from prison tomorrow and begin serving house arrest. under terms of the release, pistorius must continue

psychotherapy and he's not allowed to possess a firearm. a muslim civil rights group is honoring the texas high school student who was arrested after he built a digital clock that his teachers and police thought was a bomb. the council on american islamic relations has given hack med muhammad its american husband lick of the year award. his arrest in september sparked claims that he was singled out because he is a muslim. >> i used to want to stop discrimination for everyone, not just for religious but for all races as well. >> president obama invited ahmed to attend this evening's white house astronomy night. >> 4:51. come up on eyewitness news this morning, a car tears through a 4-foot fence and plunges 20 feet into the ocean. nearby rescuers sprang into action but it was too late. >> we're following a breaking story, take a look at this video, businesses and homes

immortalized in the movie goodfellas. authorities arrested vincent asaro last year after investigators accused him of taking part in a $6 million robbery at kennedy airport. prosecutors now say that the 80- year-old helped plan the heist in 1978. he's accused of spending most of the $750,000 in the robbery at the racetrack. any thoughts of putting on shorts and a t-shirt to go for again. >> if you want to dress and get going, dress warmly to get these temperatures. temperatures 21 monticello, 20 around new city, 30 around paramus. it's a morning where we're going to see temperatures today that hang around the 20s. start the day in the 30s in the suburbs, and we're going to be looking at temperatures by the afternoon that get into the low 50s and only about 51 to 52 this afternoon. dress warmly.

is said to be showing signs of improvement after being found unconscious in a nevada brothel. >> friends and family remain by his bedside. sources tell abc news, the queens native is doing "very well." odom was found unconscious last tuesday at the love ranch. they're awaiting blood tests to determine what triggered the medical episode. we're closing in on 5:00. we're also following a breaking story. crews are battling a massive fire right now in mount vernon. several stores and apartments are engulfed in flames. we've just received an update from firefighters who will have a live update from the scene. >> another spectacular night for the mets defeating the cubbies at citi field. now they move on to chicago to the world series. >> it may feel like we're getting a taste of that cold chicago air right now, but we are tracking a big warmup. meteorologist bill evans will have your accuweather update

this is breaking news from channel 7 eyewitness news. and breaking right now, crews are battling a massive fire in westchester county. this is a live look right now from the scene in mount vernon where crews are trying to knock down fierce flames. several stores and apartments have been destroyed. >> it's 5 a.m. i'm ken rosato. >> and i'm lori stokes. we're going to get to weather and traffic in a minute. first we are going to start with that breaking story. huge flames forcing several families into the cold in mount vernon. >> kristin thorne live at the scene with the latest information. what do we know? >> reporter: ken and lori, just a quick update from a fire official here on scene again confirming to eyewitness news that there thankfully have been no injuries and all the

trying to get this thing under control for about the past four hours now. here you're taking a live look. last look we showed you, really the whole front of this row of stores was on fire. now it looks like the fire has moved back a little bit. again, this started around 1:00 in the morning. it's been quite some time for firefighters to try to get this thing under control. where you're seeing the large plume of smoke there, that is where that apartment building was standing. i just confirmed with the fire official here that some of that building has collapsed. thankfully no report of any injuries. this fire started around 1:00 in the morning in this row or stores in mount vernon. those stores include a laundromat, a pizza place as well as a deli. the fire spread to an attached 3-story apartment building leaving about a dozen people now homeless. we're hearing here on the scene that a local police officer may have been walking by and saw

final contract offer by bowman and son buses and voted saturday to strike. the bus company transports 15,000 students to 35 schools in nassau and suffolk counties. 5:07. it has been a bloody weekend in israel with at least five knife tacks on israeli soldiers. take a look at this cell phone from a bus terminal where a young palestinian grabbed a soldier's gun and opened fire. he killed one soldier and wounded at least nine people. it's one of the worst attacks yet in a month-long wave of violence. israel added more check points and is building a new barrier to separate jewish and palestinian neighborhoods in east jerusalem. secretary of state john kerry plans to meet with israeli and palestinian leaders this week to discuss the surge in the violence. mr. kerry will meet with benjamin netanyahu in germany on thursday. he will then travel to jordan for talks with palestinian leader mahmoud abbas. they say that netanyahu may

cancel his trip to berlin if continues to escalate. mayor bill de blasio says the attacks by palestinians must end. the mayor spoke about the killings as he wrapped up a three-day visit to israel. this is a trip that had to be rearranged to avoid endangering the mayor. >> we're here at a painful moment. we're here at a moment where people are afraid, where people are struggling because of the violence in their midst every single day lately, more and absolutely innocent civilians. something unconscionable and unacceptable according to all must end. >> the mayor said he felt a sense of responsibility toward the jewish community as there are more than 1 million jews here in new york. york this morning. 5:08. happening today, the government will announce new regulations for remote controlled drones.

and updating a breaking story, raging fire in mount vernon, westchester county, several businesses have been gutted. an apartment building collapsed. we've also learned in the last few minutes that no firefighters or residents were hurt. kristin thorne just spoke to

fire officials on the scene and we will have a live update at 5:30. that's still ahead. in the meantime, rescue work is underway in the philippines where hundreds are trapped by flooding after a powerful typhoon. volunteers are working along side army and police officers to get families out of the hardest hit areas. a typhoon hit yesterday forcing 16,000 people out of their homes. officials say at least two people have been killed. time is 5:14. a good bit of upstate new york has the snow shovels out early this year, upstate and western new york. roads in syracuse were so iced over they had to close a 12- mile stretch of interstate 81. there were at least 50 at the same time communities to the north and west got a blast of snow, up to 9 inches of it. in northern michigan they got a half a foot of snow. marathoners still ran their

there, behind there there used to be a three-story apartment building. i say used to be because it collapsed. it collapsed about an hour into this fire burning which the fire chief told me that is very quick for a building to collapse in just about an hour. thankfully the four people who live there got out in time. this fire started around 1:00 in the morning. this group of stores in mount vernon. those stores include a deli, a pizza place, and a laundromat. the fire chief tells me this really has been quite a stubborn fire because each of these businesses has its own separate roof. so really the fire is just jumping from roof to of. they had to open up each individual roof. it's been a lot of work. there are three fire departments here including pelham, yonkers and of course mount vernon. >> we had heavy fire in a basement and smoke pushing throughout the structure. both the storefronts and the

>> and that apartment building has collapsed? >> yes, in under one hour the building fully collapsed. the residential area did collapse. at this point we're getting reports from the tenants that reside in the second and third floor that they self-evacuated. >> reporter: thankfully none of those residents was injured and none of these firefighters have been injured. they've been working very, very hard. they've been here since one in the morning. the fire chief tells me they're now in the process of trying to get relief for some of these firefighters and trying to bring in some fresh people. really they've been here for quite some time. the fire keeps flaring up. we saw it going back and forth between these buildings kind of, you know, just back and forth, and now it seems to be going backwards. really just a very stubborn fire here. hopefully they'll be able to get it under control soon. we will have here live throughout the morning. we are live in mount vernon, i'm kristin thorne channel 7 eyewitness news. >> stubborn fire. thank you.
