4:34 am
winter delay was not denied overnight or late last night into early this morning. we had our first taste of winter weather finally on the nassau county border this morning it's now become a rain event but this was the picture going into the morning. a lot of snow coming down forming a minor amount of accumulation here but again that snow eventually after covering roads and cars transitioning into rain. meanwhile take a look at this. icy and slippery road conditions certainly causing this accident to happen a car turning over, the driver left with minor injuries luckily but again with that snow coming down so quickly, certainly did create very dangerous driving conditions and now this morning we have that rain but the rules still apply. you definitely have to be careful going out the door this morning but meanwhile take a live picture here again. this is the highway at the lie behind me and right now traffic going along pretty well so far but we're expecting things to perhaps slowdown dramatically
4:35 am
people head out on to the road so again definitely expect slippery road conditions here so take your time no matter where you need to go this morning, for now live in jericho, dray clark, channel 7 eye witness news. any of us that got up early know right away the slippery ride on the roads especially in rockland county eye witness news live with a look at the conditions now. what's the latest there? >> reporter: hi dave. so it's the white stuff but it's not what dray has. it's not snow, it's sleet. i'll bend down and show you. this stuff is hard, it's mixed with sleet mixed with rain so now it's slippery and you can see how it balls up, just sort of like the icy fun stuff your kids eat on the roadways it's not so fun. we saw at least three accidents in a period of 45 minutes while driving here from the upper west side from our studios so let me show you the conditions we're talking about in the area. you can see some sleet starting
4:36 am
then in rockland county, the left lane on the throughway north of the tappan zee bridge is covered in that icy slush i just showed you. i shot this video with my protographer there with my phone and my protographer call haven story was behind the wheel. speed was reduced to 35 miles per hour on the tappan zee bridge, the mix and sleet and rain has really made for some slick roadways as i said we saw about three accidents in about a 45 minute period. the middle lane really seems to be the best here, driving and it's the least slush cover. we've seen a few plows in the area trying to clean up before the morning commute but your best bet is to take it slow and stay in that middle lane. channel 7 eye witness news. >> thank you. if you need a very latest on the weather conditions you can check out our free accutrack weather alert app. we have breaking news to tell you about this morning in new jersey. it involves a deadly shooting

4:41 am
great warm weather as we go in to the end of the year so i'm glad the snow plows are ready this morning, so they can plow that one inch of rain out there. >> exactly and good morning everybody. watch out for the icy conditions traveling around north of the city. tappan zee bridge speeds reduced to 45 miles per hour well. take" slowly over the bridges and of course around the ramps. 95 south exit 36 in milford a collision in connecticut and merit parkway south and fairfield a crash. watch for a couple accidents on 80/80 west, and exit 52 in fairfield a collision, 80 eastbound exit 12 and hope and overturned tractor trailer new jersey turnpike southbound looks like the truck lanes subject to closure getting down toward exit 9 with a bad accident as well and let's go outside. i'll show you down through millwood, you can see slick conditions reported here so definitely want to take it slowly traveling around. alternate side in effect. back over to you david, laurie. debbie thank you it's 4:41 still ahead on eye witness news

the mild temperatures in our area taking a little break. look at the weather that came through last night. this is the landmark windmill on long branch on the jersey shore. it collapsed in the strong winds around 9:00 p.m. and the diner was open at the time and workers say they could hear the windmills blades fall. fortunately nobody was hurt. nothing like a windmill in the middle of a wind storm to cause problems. >> luckily like you said nobody was hurt. check in with meteorologist bill evans kind of messy out there. >> oh, there's no question about that.
4:44 am
camera i guess this is astoria looking south so we are seeing low clouds and rain and fog and these issues and as we go through the morning commute we have rain in the city and up to the north we have sleet so the rain will win out. it's just that the damage has been done already and the suburbs for the commute this morning in the northern and western suburbs we have rain here and there never was a threat of any snow. we're looking at 37 degrees, it's way too warm, we've got rain, high humidity and looking at a pressure that continues to fall. yesterdays high was 46 and on long island, 36 northport and looking at 40 toward the eastern end. we are looking at these temperatures this morning to continue to warm from south to north so the farther north you'll go white plains 31, 33 andover, bridgeport now 34 so here in the northern suburbs, the northwest suburbs those freezing temperatures down to the jersey shore it's already 48 so winter weather advisory until 8:00 in the lower part of the hudson river valley the
4:45 am
11:00 where it's colder and that sleet hangs on a little bit longer so here is our rain/snow line we call that the pink shades of sleet and that's right there above i80, a little spot of snow around andover, and a little snow popping up here along 91 toward hartford but mostly it's sleet and the blue area you'll see those areas are rain. it's rainy across long island, very heavy rain in central southern jersey and have to be on the look out for that because it can create flooding issues so overnight about a quarter of an inch in most spots but on our futurecast our computer model here is that rain/snow line across southern westchester southern rockland county, fairfield county that slides northward and eventually, westchester and rockland and a good portion of fairfield county and northern jersey ending the rain by 7:00 and then 8:00, 9:00 that rain/snow line creeps up to 84 and then also sullivan, orange

4:51 am
it's an accuweather alert day. we have sleet to the north, rain to the south, a big commuting mess this morning and it's 4:55 good morning i'm meteorologist bill evans. this morning what we really want to focus in on is the fact that to our south this rain/snow line keeps creeping north across long island and through new brunswick so as that creeps northward we'll see this rain overtaking everything and creating what will be less in the way of the sleet to the north but the damage is already done here this morning across the area as far as the sleet
4:52 am
goes. so today, we will be looking at what's going to be the sleet up here above i287 right here around kent corner you'll see newberg along 84 and over to the north and west and this will continue for a few hours before it changes over to rain. debbie can tell you all about what that's doing to the traffic and commute up from the north. >> it's definitely causing a mess. good morning bill, everybody. speeds down to 45 at the tappan zee bridge because of the sleet definitely take it slowly over the bear mountain bridge, the beacon bridge, all very tough this morning and let's go to 95 south in connecticut exit 36 in milford a crash and stanford an accident there, merit parkway south in fairfield the spin-out reported and watch for problems as well on 80 west exit 56 and 52 in fairfield and two separate accidents and the southbound new jersey turnpike all lanes closed and the truck lanes by exit 9 at east brunswick with a serious collision definitely want to take it slow traveling around this morning. alternate side in effect back to you david, laurie.

football players, researchers in new hampshire say the players who practiced with helmets felt they were protected. so, they tackled head first and without a helmet and players will tackle with their bodies, as athletes do in other sports such as rugby. well tiny apartments are nothing new in new york city but the next trend in new york real estate may be living spaces the size of a one car garage. so far, the idea is actually catching on. 60,000 new yorkers are trying to get on the list of those tiny apartments for studio apartments cost between $950 and $1450 a month and the space is cozy ranging from 260 to 350 square feet, but everyone who signs up won't make the cut and that's because there are only 14 units available so there's a lot of people trying to get these spots. we are closing in on 5:00 just ahead on eye witness news

5:00 am
this picture the driver of this car losing control and flipping his car over there on the ramp to sunrise highway. luckily though that driver only had minor injuries but again we're having our first real taste of winter weather so late in the season if you will some drivers kind of taken by surprise if you will. now back here live along the lie right now traffic moving pretty good so far but we're expecting later on this morning as we get into the morning rush that traffic will back up some but you still have to be careful because even though it's not snowing it's still raining and still pretty cold so you have to be careful about coming across those dangerous and slippery spots but overall things are going pretty well considering we had our first taste of snow earlier this morning. live this morning in jericho, dray clark channel 7 eye witness news. thank you, let's check out rockland county because they are experiencing some of the same things. sleet, slippery roads now rain, eye witness news is live with
